August 6, 2026The synopsis ALONE had me hookedddd. 🤭 As someone who absolutely loves dark, toxic relationship dynamics... this one hit the nail right on the coffin. 🖤
You're introduced to what seem like two incredibly lonely people who somehow find each other in the most twisted, creepy way possible. Their connection isn't built on love... it's built on the brutality of life, death, and everything we're usually told to push aside or "tone down." I loved that this book didn't shy away from those darker themes.
AND WHEN THE DETECTIVE ON THEIR CASE GOT SWITCHED????? MY GOODNESSSSS. 😭 I literally sat there like "...wait a minute." The adrenaline kicked in so fast and I could not put the book down after that.
The jealousy throughout these pages was also SO fun to read, especially considering the history these two have under their belts. It wasn't the kind of jealousy that had me rolling my eyes either lol. It actually added to the tension and had me grinning at some parts because it fit them so well.

Ugh I hate writing this review. This author writes dark MM under another name and I love them. This is their first MF and it was a big miss for me. I did finish it but I was having to power through a bit and started skimming the spicy scenes which is like what? For me, lol.
I just did not connect with the characters at all. Roxy is a nomad living out of a van, creating drawings she sells for money. Liked that, cool. She’s a loner, does her own thing, doesn’t put on a polite face for society, love it. Dom is also a loner, has seen and lived through the underbelly of civilization, also doesn’t give two fucks and is just himself, no mask. Again love it. I liked these characters separately. Together, their relationship just wasn’t…enough. I saw in another review repetitiveness mentioned and it’s spot on. Once they are together, it’s very, your mine, I’m yours, forever no matter what, which again, I love, but it was said over and over during the spicy scenes and outside of them and it got old.
I liked these kinda Thelma and Louise and Bonnie and Clyde vibes with them being on the run from the cops from committing a crime. But they end up getting new identities and try to live a normal life but it’s not working for them cause of their “darkness”. It’s mundane and “not them”. They don’t conform to normal society. But they made a big deal about starting over and being together and were so adamant about it then, a few months later they are like we can’t live like this? What were you guys expecting?
They figure out a way to live how they want to through Roxy becoming a famous photographer and artist but she does it anonymously to protect them. While I really like the art aspect of the plot, it was just Roxy doing her thing with Dom watching over her for protection. I know Dom is obsessed with her but he ends up also living for her art and again, just didn’t vibe with me I guess. They also had this jealousy thing going on where if anyone talked to the other or touch them it was like immediate reaction and then they get away and are all horny for each other. I also found that just not hitting.
This review is way too long, as you can see I had issues and I think I just needed to get it all out since I normally love this author, lol. I think I would’ve liked them to continue their life of crime and living on the run with going out in a ball of fire. That was kinda hinted at when they thought they might get caught and IMO was the way to go with these two.
This won’t stop me from reading more MF from Scar as I want to see how MF develops for them in future works.

Good but repetitive
Roxy likes to draw. It's her passion her other passion is her fascination with death. So she draws "death". Be aware of the trigger warnings.
The beginning of the book is a bit repetitive. Exactly the same description of what's going on from FMC'S and MMC'S POV. Also the whole fascination with death and dead things. Just repetitive.
Then we meet Dom. The two find out they both like to see death in the eyes. They travel together in her van after the bar incident. Kind of a l9ve at first sight pairing.
There seems to be a lack of research during the first spicy scene. Can you say "severe yeast infection and UTI". This information has been around for quite some time now. I was too busy itching to find the scene arousing.

Ya’ll, listen. I gave this a shot, I really did. I love the premise, I love the idea of toxic obsession and read a ton of books with that trope. BUT, once I heard Roxy and Dom have the same conversarion three times about how Roxy should be afraid, how she isn’t, and then Dom says she’s his, I just couldn’t.
I didn’t connect with Roxy at all. I like the weird girl trope, but the way she was written was way too cliche. Love a girl that finds beauty in death, but there wasn’t anything else complex about her that made her stand out from other goth girls that love death and the macabre. Dom was interesting, but I wanted more oomph from him.
I’ll def try again if Thorne writes another book, but I just couldn’t get into this one. Considering her other books under Syn Blackrose are my favorites (Seriously, Chase and Noah are the best toxic husbands❤️), I was just dissappointed with the lack of dimensionality of the story and characters.

Roxy and Dom, the connection is immediate, intense, and all-consuming. Unfortunately there isn't much tension or build up, which to me always make that intenseness better. Roxy travels in her vintage campervan and paints the beauty in death. But then she meets Dom and once he gets his claws in her, he doesn't let go. Always check TWs before reading :)

This book is centered around obsession, and it wastes no time making that clear. For both Roxy and Dom, the connection is immediate, intense, and all-consuming. On one hand, it perfectly serves the story's theme. On the other, because everything is laid out within the first few chapters, there isn't much mystery or tension in the buildup. They simply recognize something in each other and never look away.
What fascinated me most was that neither of them feels like a typical romantic lead. They come across as old, tired souls who have seen too much of the world and still haven't found what they were looking for. At times, they even sound almost robotic—detached, blunt, stripped of filters and optimism. Yet there is something compelling about their honesty. Both know their worlds are destined to collide, and instead of fighting it, they seem to linger in the anticipation.
The relationship gives off strong Bonnie and Clyde energy mixed with a ride-or-die devotion. This is not a story about a good girl falling for a bad boy. Roxy and Dom are both deeply flawed, and if anything, they bring out the worst in each other. Their love feels less like salvation and more like an addiction—something that slowly rewrites their moral compass and pushes them further across lines that shouldn't be crossed.
For most of the book, I had a constant feeling of dread, convinced that something terrible was waiting around the corner and that a happily-ever-after wasn't guaranteed. The obsession is destructive, the toxicity level is sky-high, and yet I couldn't look away.
I did notice some repetition throughout the story, and when I reached the end, I found myself in a strange position. This feels like one of those books that leaves you staring at the wall afterward, wondering whether you loved it or hated it—and that alone makes it memorable.
I'm still not entirely sure where I stand. What I do know is that it felt refreshing. It isn't a typical stalker romance, nor is it a simple story of a bad boy corrupting a good girl. Instead, it's a dark exploration of two people who recognize something broken in each other and choose to embrace it rather than fight it.
I can confidently say that I won't forget it anytime soon. And honestly? The title couldn't be more accurate.

Wow. That's my first thought because oh my god. Okay so first Dom. He's kind of cool to read about because I like the way his thoughts are written in the book. And when the case got a new detective, I love that he was so calm about it yk? Serial killer vibes hehe. No but seriously, I like Dom. Then Roxy. She's a badass. I like her. And I like that she doesn't take any shit from Dom either, and that she actually confronts him. A lot of books give that helpless heroine vibe and the strong male MC, and I like that Roxy and Dom are not that. So yeah. This was a lot of rambling and I definitely recommend reading it if you're into dark ish romance which is also kind of cute (idk my opinion may be slightly off), and two people who are so different they're perfect! OH and I love the possessive vibes! I like how even though they did everything correct in the terms of the murder, but I also like that they had this police investigation over their head. It made suspense and pressure on the relationship before it properly began, if you know what I mean? Well anyway, it an awesome book and I enjoyed reading it!

This is definitely another level of t0xic, I think in a way I wasn’t prepared for this kind of dark romance and this chemistry between Roxy and Dom.
Roxy is an artist obsessed with the moment of death would it be a living thing, a landscape or just a town dying, add to that sad people, tired of living their life. She has always seen the world differently and was never able to fit in so she just decided to take the road wherever it would lead her. But that was until she met Dom, a such out of the blue meeting that totally changed her life.
Dom is obsessed, possessive, his dark side is like a beast that decides to plant its claws into Roxy and never let her go. Both feel seen together and we are ready to go through whichever obstacle comes their way.
Truly dark in a different way than what I am used to, maybe it is because of the obsession with the moment of death. I was also surprised to see which direction the story was going and it was definitely a kind of Bonnie and Clyde adventure.

HOLY TOXIC!! The title of the book fits these two perfectly.
Roxy and Dom meet in the most unexpected ways, on the side of the road next to roadkill. It's at this point there is this instant attraction and chemistry that drew them to each other realizing they share the same outlook on life.
These two were equally obsessive and equally possesive.
This gives off massive Bonnie and Clyde vibes and I was here for it all. I can't wait to see what comes next.

I absolutely love this author books under a different pen name so I had extremely high hopes for this one and as much as I did like it it didn't hit the way I was hoping it would. Which is 100% on me as I should have gone into it with it being a new author in mind not with how much I loved her other stuff.
Anywho, I did get the privilege to read it in advance of release. So we have Roxy and Dom. Roxy the artist has a fascination with death and decay. Dom see her on the side of the road in Utah drawing a dead fox and that is pretty much were the story begins. We do get some unaliving and some unhinged behaviour. They do have a strong connection for 2 random strangers and I love the way that Dom (James) helps Roxy follow her dreams.
I especially like that they did the full circle thing and went back to where it all began.

I find it a bit hard to read. it wasn't catching me up. Unfortunately, I DNF'D the book. I really love this authors MM books. Read them all (she goes under different name), and they all 5* reads. But this wasn't for me.
It's a really good job to the author for trying something new. Definitely will read other books in the future.

They are literally a match made in heaven! Even if what they do is questionable you still feel slightly happy that they found their person to live life with.

a place to feel at home
Within the first chapter, already found a connection. I enjoyed Dom & Roxy's dark love story. The way their obsession grew darker and more intense, the more time they soent together . Two dark souls finding each other . The story isn't simple or soft, it is full of sharp edges and dark corners
They found light in each other. The plot was good, if not a little stalker I'm parts but the super hot smut more than made up for it. Well worth a read. Not as dark as other books I have read. This is a story of obsessive love and possession with just a hint of toxic devotion 😏🖤

Roxie and Dominic has a great dynamic.
The mystery romance is a great genre that needs more attention.
She is a mystery photographer and she keep her identity keep quiet.
When Dom comes into her life her darkness comes out of hiding and they end up having secret they must hide at all cost.
now they have to run from the cops.
They were able to close the case since everything was destroyed in the end.
If you love psychological Thrillers this is def the book for you.

Roxy is an artist obsessed with death, channeling her fascination into her artwork, so definitely check the trigger warnings before diving in. I enjoyed the dark premise and the chemistry between Roxy and Dom. There is so sections in the story that repeat since we see both POVs covering the same events which emphasizes their shared fixation on death.
I loved seeing Roxy and Dom embrace their dark natures, build a life together, and earn their unconventional happily-ever-after.

Dom and Roxy see each other for what they are. They see the darkness that everyone else chooses not to see. Roxy's art captures it wholly and shows the rest of the world anonymously. They travel and find the abandoned places the locals have forgotten about and photograph and draw the death in the ruins.

Really enjoyed this book. It was dark, emotional, and had such an artistic feel to it that made it different from other dark romances I’ve read. Roxy and Dominic were both completely flawed, but that’s what made their relationship so interesting to follow. Their connection felt intense from the start and definitely had that addictive, toxic energy.
The writing pulled me in straight away, especially the darker themes mixed with the romance and spicy moments. I also liked that the story wasn’t trying to make the characters perfect or easy to love.
A few scenes in the middle dragged a little for me, which is why it’s a 4 star instead of 5, but overall I was hooked and couldn’t stop thinking about it after finishing.
If you like dark psychological romance, morally grey characters, and obsessive love stories, this is definitely worth reading. The campervan/cemetery vibe was so unique.

I liked this! She's a new to me author & this is Dom & Roxy's story. She has unusual taste in art & they just happened to meet; neither could get the other out of their head. The chemistry between them was awesome & they knew they were meant to be. But they both have secrets & relish in their mutual taste. I really liked this; the spice was fantastic! Recommend this book & author.

Roxy and Dom were some hell of a couple. Their devotion sure was a toxic one for sure! I definitely love a male that will do just about anything for his female. And this couple were above and beyond obsessed with each other. Their story sure had so many twists and turns they had so caught up in their story. It was definitely a great read.

This isn’t girl falls for guy or guy falls for girl, it’s they both are toxic and end up falling into each other because of that. This isn’t the type of style of writing a read very often, but it was interesting how I felt at the end. It’s book I think I’ll be thinking about for awhile.

This was a great dark and morbid read. Roxy and Dom were awesome. A modern day Bonnie and Clyde for sure. I loved how she found the beauty in things others would find disgusting. And the adventure her and Dom went on…so great. I loved everything between them. They just fit so well with each other. I would’ve rated this a five, but that repetition was too much.

I really loved Roxy and Dom. This is so different from other stories I have read. It is dark, toxic and in some ways a beautiful love story. It really does have the “Bonnie & Clyde” vibes and I devoured it. I hope to read more from this new author.

I liked the book and the idea, but it was so repetitive. They had the same conversation so many times. Then roxy wanting to keep her name was so stupid and a great way to get them caught. I just knew she would somehow end up getting them caught. Idk how they got out of it.

Dark but so softly descriptive on occasion, that it draws you under it's spell. I very much enjoyed the artistic arc of the storyline, something I dont remember coming across often.
This couple are all or nothing and that really drives the story.
