Eamon Stone, Hayden McCormick, and Dominic Wolfe have survived everything together—from a brutal schoolboy existence to deadly missions against Napoleon. Stranded behind enemy lines at Waterloo, they make a if they live through the day, each will try to settle down and marry, leaving the last bachelor standing the loser of their wager.
No one expects Eamon Stone, son of a disgraced swindler, to fall in love first, least of all Eamon himself.
London, 1816
When Eamon calls on the widowed Duchess of Aylesmore to assess her late husband’s art collection, he hardly imagines she’ll be young, lovely, and in desperate straits. Caro Aylesmore, raising her nine-year-old son alone and drowning in her husband’s debts, hopes the paintings will save them.
Dragged across Europe by his trickster father, Eamon learned all about art, including frauds and forgeries. He hates disappointing the late duke’s beautiful second wife—so much so that he impulsively offers to search the entire house for anything of value.
He's not certain why he's being so gallant. But Caro’s quiet resilience reaches him in ways he can’t explain, and young Leo, the new duke, is already finding a place in Eamon’s heart.
Caro faces more than stern debt-collectors. Her husband’s ambitious nephew aims to claim Leo for himself, and is all too eager to expose Eamon as the fraud he once was. If scandal touches Caro, she could lose her beloved son to a man who covets the title more than the boy.
As Caro falls for the disarming Eamon, she faces an impossible her heart, or her son’s future.
Eamon may have to sacrifice his own happiness to keep her safe—even if it means losing the wager and his heart.
NY Times Bestselling author Jennifer Ashley writes historical, contemporary, and paranormal romance, historical mysteries, and urban fantasy as Jennifer Ashley, Allyson James, and Ashley Gardner.
Big fan of this authors, love the McKenzie and Shifter series, so looked forward to a new historical series. Carl or on one occasion Cara, is daughter of landed gentry, who inexperience married a duke, a love match, although now she's a penniless widow living with her mother in law and young son the new duke. The men in the family more interested in collecting things than spending money wisely. Eamon Stone is the son of a con artist, ex military and loved art, now working for a gallery as a valuer, he's sent to the ducal residence to value art with a view to selling some of the huge collection. Whilst I enjoyed this first book, I wanted more back story for Eamon, Wolfe and Hayden, particularly around their experiences at Waterloo. I think this sums up my feelings on this book, I didn't quite get into it, although I read it in one sitting. I did like the relationships between the three man, and the one with their commanding officer, and how, Eamon had many friends from his childhood. The three women also have a great relationship although it would be good to know it's history and how three women from different backgrounds found each other and became friends. Some nice red herrings too. 3.5*
This book was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a similar intensity of emotion and plot that I found with the MacKenzie series (I know my expectations are not the author’s problem). This was a very lighthearted book with a low conflict resolution and HEA - it almost felt like a novella. Once I adjusted my expectations to read this as regency fluff and for “vibes only”, it was easier to read. The pacing was inconsistent but I still enjoyed the plot and the characters that were introduced. I wish the characters and plot had been given more depth, but I’m still looking forward to the next books in series even if they are lighter in tone as this was.
A welcome return to historical romance for Jennifer Ashley
I have read many books written by Jennifer Ashley, and have enjoyed them all. The author writes in many different genres and is diligent in her research when writing stories set in the past.
‘Duchess in Diamonds’ is an enjoyable story, with interesting characters and intrigue. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Love me a regency romance, and this authour does them so well! We have two sets of three best friends, and we start off with Caro and Eamon. They did a wonderful dance around each other, seeing as they were at different statues, and that allowed them to get the mettle of the other. And they liked what they found. A few minor twists, but luckily, a pretty easy HEA for these two <3
This book is a total joy - a lively plot, lovely original characters, and a wholly satisfactory ending. An absolutely perfect way to make the dark and troubling present recede for a while.
I was soooo disappointed. This book was so far below Ms Ashley’s other regency novels that it it is hard to believe she actually wrote it. If the others in this series are on this level, I will have to consider taking them out of auto-buy.
