Do you have young people in your life who are obsessed with maps? This is the book for them! Starting with a big map with all current countries is always good, and different types of projections and the reason for these differing representations are discussed. I did particularly like the way that countries were compared: there are several maps where Chile is laid on top of other maps so we can see that it stretches across the US coast to coast! There are 142 pages of maps on all manner of different topics, not just countries, geography, or even historical events. There are so many maps, in fact, that they are set into six different categories: People and Passions, Nature and Animals, Transport, History and Exploration, and Information and Technology.
The variety of information is interesting, and there's something for everyone. I enjoyed the map of popular names across the globe-- who knew that Olivias ruled the world?! There are maps of where school uniforms are requires, what sports are popular, and where the most toxic animals live! (The south, usually. Where they grow very large!)
Maps are always helpful in historical contexts, so there are ones of the Roman and British Empires, castles, and Tokyo's growth. There's even a map of all of the British colonies and when they gained independence.
The technology maps were particularly interesting, covering things like how things are measured, how many televisions there are, what internet coverage is like, and how many people have smart phones. Ending with a glossary, index, and source notes, this book is a wealth of information about topics you didn't even know interested you!
It would have been nice to have clearer chapter divisions, but this is a perfect book for a long car ride or a rainy afternoon. The colors are bright and engaging, the illustrations amusing, and the information varied and complete. This is a great opportunity for everyone to learn something Maptacular!

Maps galore! Colorful and covering many subjects, this is a unique collection of maps. Some are quite simple while others are overly busy. Maps are always a fun time. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for an advance reader copy.
