He’s got a badge and a broody stare. She’s the chaos he never saw coming.
An obsessed podcaster starts unraveling my family’s secrets, and I’m forced to take sanctuary in a quiet small town. I envision a peaceful reset. What I find instead is a temporary nanny job with an overprotective single dad who clearly doesn’t trust me.
Our first meeting ends with me in handcuffs. It’s…not my best introduction.
The minor misunderstanding turns Sutton Stone into a human cactus—prickly, guarded, and determined to keep his distance. Or maybe that’s just his default setting.
But I’m pretty immune to the grumpy act. And unfortunately for him, he desperately needs my help.
Between bedtime stories, close quarters, and a forced Ferris wheel ride, Sutton’s defenses start to crumble. Lines blur. Feelings sneak in.
And when the trouble I left behind shows up uninvited, Sutton’s protective instincts surge into something fierce and personal.
A. M. Wilson is a USA Today & Amazon Top 20 bestselling author of contemporary romance. She loves writing small town romances and dark suspenseful reads, depending on her mood that day. When she isn’t furiously typing on her computer, she can be found searching for her next all-consuming read. A. M. lives in the Midwest with her husband, two children, and two adorable dogs.
You know that feeling when you finally get your hands on one of your most anticipated reads of the year and it completely delivers? That’s this book! A.M. Wilson always brings the heat and the heart! Denial features a broody police officer and the nanny he was completely in denial about needing (in more ways than one!) This story kicks off with an insanely hilarious meet cute. It literally ended with her in cuffs in the back of his cruiser – and no not in a fun way!
Sutton Stone is brooding, overprotective, and the single dad to the cutest little girl, Eleanor (aka Nellie). Grumpy doesn’t begin to cover it. This man is the human equivalent of a cactus! Meanwhile, Alice is looking to start over after her brother’s misdeeds landed her in the spotlight. Trying to escape an obsessed podcaster who won’t take no for an answer, she moves to Minnesota to be closer to her best friend, Whitney (yes, I’m talking Whitney Powell, Jack’s wife! This crossover is everything my Powell-loving-heart desires!!). Needing a job, her move lands her in a temporary nanny gig for Sutton's daughter. Cue the forced proximity!
The chemistry between these two is so addictive. That grumpy x sunshine energy is strong, and their witty banter – oh yeah! Verbal sparring turned foreplay! Watching Sutton's prickly exterior completely melt when it comes to his girls is everything. This story really has it all.. steam, emotional depth, and even a touch of suspense. A.M. Wilson does an amazing job balancing the sweet, heartwarming moments with some serious, protective tension when Alice’s past finally catches up to her. It’s the perfect blend of an emotional, slow-burn romance and a high-stakes suspense that will keep you flipping pages!
Good, standard 3 star story w two good people, a cute kid, and some danger. I will likely forget it tomorrow, but an entertaining low angst story.
Alice 🚓 Sutton
Alice and Sutton meet when he pulls her over for some reason and arrests her. I forget why. Anyway, she’s actually moving to town to escape a stalking podcaster. Her best friend helps her find a job as a nanny and, to the surprise of no one, it’s for the grumpy handsome cop’s 7yr old girl. The best friend also turns out to be married to some relative, brother, family friend of the grumpy handsome cop🤷🏻♀️ (Honestly. I haven’t read any of the prior books by this author, so the family was super complicated and I have no idea how anyone was related.)
Of course, she is continuing to be harassed by this podcast guy who apparently wants to interview her about her brother who is in jail. She tells Sutton about it after there’s a break-in at her house and she, of course, then goes to live w him.
Sparks fly, love follows, danger lurks. Big kidnapping at the end and - shocker - Sutton comes to the rescue and they announce their love to each other.
❤️ No third act breakup 🗣️Communication - I do like that she fesses up to her whole situation when necessary and that he doesn’t freak out. He just gets reasonably cautious and she allows him. 👧Cute kid w way too many nicknames - Eleanor/Nellie/Nellie-Jo/Buttercup, etc - the relationship w his young daughter plays a real role in the story. 😊Studly 40’s local policeman w big family and single 31 yr old nanny escaping her awful family. 🏥Diabetes rep - This was done v well. I don’t know much about managing diabetes but the author seemed to weave the daily struggles into the story realistically. 🏠Small town Minnesota 🫣No OM/OW - Neither have been w anyone in over a year. The mother of his daughter died of a drug overdose; they were never in love. 🌶️Spice - first kiss after 50% and then open door 🙄Nicknames - Firecracker (her) and Sunny (him). These were used entirely too much. 😊Small moments - lots of small moments at home and w Nellie. 👥Dual POV; Multiple epilogues. Married and pregnant by last epilogue.
Overall, a cute light story w some outside drama. I found all the extra family members distracting and unnecessary, but that’s just me.

I can't count the number of times I caught myself smiling so hard while reading this book. Sutten, the MMC and oldest of the Stone brothers is a single dad to a sweet 8 year old girl named Eleanor, or Nellie. He is a Sheriff's deputy and struggling to meet the demands of working, fatherhood and maintaining a household. Bellies mother died when she was one but there was not really a love story between her and Sutten, however we don't get a detailed picture of their relationship prior to her death. He feels that he and He'll he are fine on their own. Alice, the FMC, needs to escape her current situation due to having a bit of a stalker issue stemming from her family's past. She decides to move to where her ex sister in law, niece and nephew live, and gets a nanny job, which happens to be for Cutter and Nellie. Alice has not had much luck with relationships in the past, either familial or romantic so she uses sarcasm and humor to deal with people and keep them at bay. These two people are attracted to each other but it is a slow burn. We don't even see any spice until about half way through the book. At that point it was kind of an "F" it moment for Authentic and he was all in from then on. I like that there was no complications with "should I allow someone into my child's life" like so many books do with single dads. I hate when the dad gives in to his carnal urges then pulls away the next day when he looks at his kid's face and feels guilty. Possible trigger warnings for this book include death of parent, physical violence, stalking, kidnapping, medical issues, profanity, open door sex scenes.
A.M Wilson has done it again! I absolutely loved Sutton and Alice. Sutton was such a grump that you had to love him! I loved that Wilson didn't write the characters to fall for each other right away. They both tried everything they could to not be with each other but fate had other plans. I absolutely loved Nellie. She was an amazing character! I loved we got to see the whole crew from the other books but they didn't take over the story. And due to a 1 star review I read...I have to say I loved all the F-bombs and loved Suttons mouth 🥵
Sutton and Alice were the epitome of grumpy/sunshine, that fit perfectly together. Alice comes into Sutton’s life like a whirlwind and drives him crazy at first, but he falls hard and fast. Their meet cute is a favorite, he arrests her for an unpaid ticket and she is still as happy as can be, which confuses him to no end.
Sutton Stone is a police officer and single dad to his daughter Eleanor “Nellie” and in denial that he needs help. When a true crime podcaster won’t leave her alone about an interview involving her brother’s case, Alice decides to move to Minnesota where her former sister in law and best friend Whitney lives. When Alice goes to meet the person she is supposed to start nannying for, the last person she expected is the grumpy police officer that just arrested her. The more time they spend together and as Sutton gets to know Alice, they start to fall for each other. Sutton also loves how much Alice cares for his daughter and the bond that they build. Alice becomes someone that Sutton feels protective of, Alice is a Type 1 diabetic and he calls to check on her when he gets an alert on the app that her levels are low and doesn’t hesitate to show up when she calls him in a panic. These two might take awhile to admit their feelings, but they were the missing piece they didn’t know they needed. Sutton’s worst fear comes to life, when Alice is kidnapped and he doesn’t know if he will get to her in time? You will have to read Denial to see how it all works out!
I’ll admit, I felt a little stressed picking this book up yesterday knowing release day was today and worrying I wouldn’t finish it in time to post a review.
Turns out I had absolutely nothing to worry about, because I devoured this book in just a couple of hours. I genuinely could not put it down.
I used to be a huge mystery/thriller reader before romance completely took over my reading life lately, and this book captured the best of both worlds for me. I was hooked from the very beginning.
Watching the relationship between Nellie and Alice develop, despite the challenges of her overprotective dad, completely stole my heart. And seeing Sutton slowly soften toward Alice throughout the story was so well done ❤️
What I loved most, though, was watching Alice slowly let her walls down and learn to trust people again. It all felt very real and emotional without ever feeling overdone.
A solid 5 stars for me ⭐️ I highly recommend picking this one up — you will not be disappointed! And now I’m already impatiently waiting for the next book in the Stone Brothers trilogy 😍
Oh my God. The way I full ugly cackled throughout this book! It was unsightly! I fell in love with A M Wilson books way back with the first installment of her Powell Sanctuary Series. So freaking glad to be back in this world, Powell family included!
Ahhhhh! This was so perfect and sooooo very needed for my bookish soul.
Alice and Sutton were a dream come true to read. It's a later in life romance with our mc's 32 and 42, so it can still be considered an age gap - a favourite of mine. Add another top fave trope, single dad / nanny, ah, I'm in bookish heaven!
Sutton was the salt and peppered, grumpy, protective, single dad, cop mmc that had his guarded heart cracked open by the Cactus parent, Diabetic, Ray of sunshine Alice. They were just top tier couple goals.
Swallowed this book whole in less than a day. It deserves a instant promotion to top of the never ending tbr if you ask me!
Oh Sutton does not disappoint. These Stone brothers are just as bad as the Powells and I’m here for it.
Alice did the right thing when she turned her brother in but in doing so she alienated him and their mother. When a true crime podcaster starts harassing her for an interview she packs it all up and moves to Minnesota where Whitney)check out Surrender if you haven’t read that one yet) lives.
Her first meeting with Sutton is in handcuffs. But she’s a rockstar when it comes to handling Nellie, Sutton’s daughter, and he reluctantly hires her as his nanny. Slowly but surely she gets under his skin but danger followed her and Sutton will have to risk it all to keep her safe.
My favorite quote is “Loving someone is living with the fear of losing them, but never letting that fear stop you from loving them despite it.”
I received and ARC and I read in a day because it was that good.
Alice has left her home town because she's being harassed and stalked by a podcaster who wants to know the inside story of her family. Her best friend and ex sister in law, Whitney, has helped her get a job as a nanny. On the way into town she's stopped by Sutton, turns out her licence has been revoked, she's taken to the police station and then allowed to leave. Sutton is unsure why he has protective feelings for her. When he arrives home, she's there! The nanny his family thinks he needs, he can't keep looking after his eight year old daughter, Nellie, run a home and carry out his duties as a deputy sheriff, something has to give. Nellie has taken to Alice so they agree to a trial period. All seems to be going well until Alice's home is broken into, Sutton, whom she gives lots of different funny names to, insists she stay at his house. She then has to explain about the stalker. Things take a turn for the worse.
The intrigue! The push and pull of the main characters! The suspense! The alpha male with an adorable little girl and the Nanny with spunk he didn’t know he needed. Awesome story that had me read it in two sittings only because I had to adult and work. This author pulled me in from the beginning with the story arc, the found family, and the small town where everyone comes to help someone in need. The author’s words had you feel like you were in the story as well as a front row seat to their emotions. I don’t want to spoil the story, but, the part with Alice fighting people who were trying to help her because she wanted to make sure Nellie was ok just brought tears to my eyes and made me feel as though I was experiencing it myself. Add this to your list for must read!
Protecting his woman This is book 2 in the Stone Trio series and features Sutton Stone and Alice. Alice has fled her hometown due to being harassed by a true crime podcaster. He wants information on her family life that resulted in her brother being sent to jail. Alice enters Sutton’s world in a most unusual way but in no time bonds with his daughter and very slowly breaks down grumpy Sutton’s defences. She brings danger to their door and Sutton steps in to help. A fantastic slow burn romance between two loveable characters and a gorgeous little girl. A story that kept me engaged and happily reading along, it was full of suspense, danger and emotional, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you A M Wilson for the opportunity to read this story.
Officier Sunny? or Officier Grumpy? Right from the very beginning you could tell that Alice and the hometown officer were going to be some kind of an item, just what kind was it going to be. Alice runs into trouble the minute she crosses into town even though she is trying to keep a low, very low profile. She does a fantastic job taking care of the bright young daughter Eleanor of Sunny. They have such a wonderful support system throughout the entire story and it seems like everyone is against Sutton, he finds it very hard to trust anyone out of the usual suspects. Love the struggle of these two, which makes the HEA all the more exciting.
Unpaid tickets and handcuffs are what bring our couple together and boy does she make the most out of their first meeting. Now Sutton is stunned to see that his whole family has decided that Alice the woman he just arrested is his new nanny. Funny, steam and dangerous this story has it all. From the grumpy office “Sunny” to the independent diabetic that sees the best in people and has fallen for the little girl she takes care of. When Sutton decides he is done playing games with his nanny he lets her know in no uncertain terms that she belongs to him and he protects his girls till the end. I loved reading this binging it until I had 1 hours of sleep before I went to work. A binge worthy story!
she run to her best friend town. someone is after her. her friend helps her get a home and a new nanny job. greta right? nope her new boss just toke her to jail for having a expired license. he’s grumpy and is set on his ways. his daughter is a beautiful little girl that loves her dad . she’s chaos rainbow. he does not need that kind of crazy in his life. the more he spends time with her he falls hard .he no longer see her as his baby but his whole world. epic book!!
If you are a sucker for witty, sharp banter that makes you laugh out loud while your heart aches, you need Denial on your radar immediately.
The back-and-forth between these characters is absolutely brilliant. A.M. Wilson serves up the perfect mix of emotional depth and playful, steamy chemistry that kept me hooked from the very first page. I loved every single second of their dynamic!
Thank you, A.M. Wilson, for this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review!
I absolutely loved every second of this book! I actually have not read the book before this one but I’m definitely going to read that just from the little snippets we received in this book. I adored seeing Alice grow closer to both Sutton and Nellie, along with watching her gain “her people” with both the Powell and Stone family.
Well another book that I can’t put it down. This has so many good things. Alice is a great h, Sutton is a hot grumpy man and Nellie just stole your heart. This book is a slow burn but this two are great at building the fire. I laughed out loud, I cried a little for both of the characters. It was a great read. Another great book in this series.
Alice moves to Minnesota to start over and avoid a tense situation. She is arrested by Sutton when she gets in town but Sutton doesn’t know that Alice is his new nanny hired by his family. Sutton is reluctant to hire Alice because she doesn’t seem to take things seriously but his 8 year old daughter loves her. Sutton soon learns that Alice is a total godsend and their bantering just seems like foreplay. Sutton finally breaks and claims Alice as his own after much yearning. Their happiness is challenged when forces from Alice’s past tracks her down. Now Sutton is in a race against time to save the woman he loves.
**I received an advanced reader copy of this book for free and I am voluntarily leaving this review.**
I was so excited to receive an ARC for this! It was soo good! I just loved the push and pull and the spice was delicious! I loved how their relationship developed and how cute Nellie was. Definitely recommend!
Watching Alice fall for Sutton was the perfect summer slow burn. I may have related a little too much to the granola bar scene and laughed out loud while my own retired K9 gave me the disapproval look while staying up reading too late.
I absolutely devoured Alice and Sutton's book. From their hysterical meet cute, to her becoming his nanny without so much as his permission. And Sutton's daughter Eleanor was the best child character I've read in a long time! As a recently new fan to A.M.'s writing, I was so excited that I just finished Revival not too long ago, so I could revisit the Stone brother's!
I loved this one. It starts with Alice getting arrested on her way into town. Then the grumpy cop learns that his family have hired her to be his daughter’s Nanny. He is not happy. Great HEA.
I love this series, it's characters and have been so lucky to read them right away and not have to wait. But, I'm thinking Silas will have a story worth the wait just like his brothers he'll be falling for his perfect ever after soon. I can't wait to see Nellie be a big sister and where the rest of the family is next. Off to look up more of A.M.'s books!
Loved Alice and Sutton! I've been waiting for their story ever since their brief encounter in the Powell Sanctuary series. That scene was so entertaining—Alice is such a fun character! I enjoyed this slow burn romance and can't wait for Silas's story next.
Oh how i loved Sutton and Alice. After leaving her old life behind Alice gets comfortable in a new town with a new job until her past catches up with her. Sutton is grumpy and makes it obvious he doesn't want her around his daughter but Alice is full of light and love and therefore hard not to like. Loved there story!
~ Plucked my heartstrings, made me care, fell in love with the characters, couldn’t put it down ~ This is a new to me author I will look for again ~
What I liked: * Alice Thompson: outgoing, fun, strong sense of humor, resilient, protective, friendly, good friend, responsible, Type 1 Diabetic, arrives in town to be Nanny to Eleanor “Nellie-Jo” Sutton, has a stalker * Sutton Stone: police officer, single parent, grumpy, reserved, protective, strong, good friend, great support network, community-minded, fighting his attraction to Alice * Eleanor Sutton: eight-years-old, Sutton’s daughter, active, curious, caring, loves Alice * Meeting the support network that must have been in books I have not read and thinking that I probably missed some great books * Watching Sutton try to ignore perky Alice and be the rigid employer as he fell under the spell of warm charming, rather wonderful Alice * The open honest communication throughout the story – between the adults and between adults and children * That I liked the characters and could see them living and loving together for the rest of their lives * The information about type 1 diabetes and being inspired to refresh my nursing information on the subject…including what Alice and Sutton might face with her diagnosis in the future * The plot, pacing, setting, and writing * Being able to dislike the baddies and being glad that they were eventually found and dealt with * Having read a new-to-me-author that I will gladly read again. * Everything except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like: evil doers after Alice and bullying of Eleanor
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review. 5 Stars
Alice is a whirlwind of banter, sunshine, humour and has just down right hilarious comebacks. Alice has Type 1 diabetes. Shes not shy and is happy to give just as good as she gets, if not better. Shes relocates after a true crime podcaster starts stalking her. He leaves a box of photos of her and she’s ready for a fresh start. Who knew her fresh start would include working for the grumpy officer who arrested her just as she gets into town.
Sutton is a single dad to 8 year old Nellie and a police officer. Nellies mum died from an overdose so his doing it mostly alone, alongside his family. They’ve all collectively decided it’s time for Sutton to get a nanny (Sutton is not aware of this). Imagine his surprise when he arrives home after a long shift to a ‘welcome’ party insisting he hires Alice. He thinks she’s too irresponsible and relaxed to be responsible for his daughter but eventually gives her a shot. She passes with flying colours. Then her stalkers back and he’s brought a friend. Can Sutton and his law enforcement friends find her before it’s too late?
I was lucky enough to recieve this book as an ARC and am leaving an honest review. This was my first read from A.M Wilson and I loved the mix of romance/chemistry, found family and the dark and twisty scenes. This book was very well written with open door spicy scenes. I’m excited to see what comes next in the Stone Series.
This book was absolutely impossible to put down for me. I devoured it in one sitting. I was sucked in to the story from the very first line and it kept me interested until the last word was read. I adore a thrill with my romance and this book did not disappoint me on either front. Alice and Sutton were very compelling characters and you couldn’t help but get invested in their story. Watching their relationship grow and change throughout the book was endearing and entertaining. Their connection and chemistry felt genuine and raw. It never once felt overdone or dramatic in a negative way. And the way Sutton was able to help Alice learn to trust again and to let people in warmed my heart. But honestly what really clinched this story was Nellie and her relationships with both Sutton and Alice. It was interesting to see how her connection to Alice impacted the way Sutton and Alice interacted. I loved the vulnerability and genuine care we got to see with regard to Nellie. It really pulls at the heartstrings of the reader. It was truly refreshing to see open and honest communication between characters, and to see Nellie being considered and included in things. This book is full of intrigue and tension and mystery and heat. And no one part overtook the others. We got a balanced narrative that gave us banter coupled with seriousness. It left me feeling emotionally wrung out and satisfied all at the same time. I couldn’t have imagined a better ending.
