Fated mates, ancient witches, Olympian Gods and demons. These are some of the interwoven themes of A Twist of Fate.
The book follows Aurora (Rory), your seemingly typical high school senior. We see her learning about her parentage and the threats she will be facing, as well as future threats on the horizon. Training is sprinkled in with normal mortal life activities like homecoming and dates at a local diner. We are shown a budding romance, without it being forced to the forefront of the story. It allows it to bloom more organically. The bonds of friendship get tested, and come out stronger on the other side.
The book ends with the promise of a battle yet to come.
Now for the bad. The books starts off rushed, almost clumsy. There is no easing you into the story or characters introductions. There is a lot of information being thrown at the reader from many different angles. This continues for the first third of the book. Once you get to the second third of the story, there is better pacing and the author seems more sure of their story telling craft. The flow improves and the action takes it's foothold.
Overall it is an enjoyable read, and gives you a new look at some of the Olympian Gods. I look forward to seeing the prescence the Olympians have in the next book(s) and what action awaits in book 2.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If you enjoy new adult fantasy with mythological twists, supernatural danger, and a heroine discovering her true power, this book is definitely worth checking out. I’m already excited to see where the series goes next!
The story opens with Aurora “Rory,” an ordinary high-school senior enjoying the last days of summer with her best friend Lexi. However, the atmosphere quickly shifts as Rory begins experiencing a strange, instinctive sensation that warns her something is wrong. The author does a great job of building tension early in the story, especially through the eerie perspective of the mysterious entity known as Kere, whose interest in Rory hints at darker forces lurking beneath the seemingly normal teenage setting.
Rory’s life takes a dramatic turn when her guardian, Meimei, reveals the truth about her origins. Rory learns that she is not just an ordinary girl, she is the daughter of the goddess Hecate and the god Hades, making her a powerful being caught between the worlds of life, death, and magic. The author skillfully mixes emotional moments, such as Rory reflecting on the parents she never knew, with grand supernatural concepts like ancient prophecies and hidden powers.
The relationships, particularly Rory’s loyal friendship with Lexi and her complicated connection to the mysterious emerald-eyed stranger add emotional depth to the unfolding supernatural plot. With vivid descriptions, intriguing world-building, and a heroine just beginning to discover the extent of her power, the novel promises an exciting journey filled with magic, danger, and destiny.
