Sunshine After the Rain: Aston Villa's Rise from the Championship to the Champions League

Sunshine After the Rain chronicles Aston Villa FC's turbulent journey from 2009 to 2023, a period in which one of English football's grandest clubs fell from the Premier League before rising again to reclaim its place among the elite.

Following Martin O'Neill's sudden departure on the eve of the 2010/11 season, Villa drifted into decline, culminating in relegation in 2016. Central to this story are the three extraordinary seasons in the Championship, marked by ownership changes, managerial upheaval, mid-table struggles, play-off heartbreak and genuine fears for the club's future.

Yet resilience defined the revival. Promotion under Dean Smith restored Villa to the top flight, and the arrival of Unai Emery ushered in a return to European competition at Villa Park. From the disappointment of Moscow in 2009 to the decisive victory over Brighton on the final day of the 2022/23 season, this book relives the matches that shaped a modern era.

With contributions from players, managers and supporters, Sunshine After the Rain offers a detailed and emotional account of Aston Villa's fall and resurgence, capturing a transformative chapter in the club's history.

I really enjoyed Sunshine After the Rain. Rob Carless captures Aston Villa’s rollercoaster journey perfectly, starting from the huge shock of Martin O’Neill leaving on the eve of the 2010/11 season, through the painful decline and relegation in 2016, the chaotic Championship years with all the ownership drama and play-off heartbreak, and then the brilliant revival under Dean Smith and Unai Emery.
The book really brings those dark times to life, but the comeback feels even sweeter. I especially loved reading about the return to the Premier League and the relief of that final-day win against Brighton in 2022/23 that sealed European football again.
The interviews with players, managers and supporters add real heart to the story. If you’ve followed Villa through the tough years, this book will definitely resonate with you. Well worth a read. 5 stars.
