YA fantasy with some romance, told in 3rd person. Not über-intense, and not endlessly grim-dark. Fairly heartwarming at times, and fairly suspenseful, with some excellent battle strategy. Sometimes mildly funny. Poignant at times, as Kael realizes that his heroes and villains aren't as one-dimensional as depicted in his Atlas. A few beloved characters die, but with honor.
Plot in general terms: Titus and his abomination of beasts rule the Unforgivable Mountains at the summit, while Grognot the Bandit Lord wreaks endless havoc in the foothills. Kael the Wright and Kyleigh the Dragon-girl decide to do something about that, with a little help from the Wild Men, an ancient tribe of magical whisperers. Learning from the wild whisperers, Kael comes into his own as a Wright — the most powerful type of whisperer.
The book also features the giants (Declan especially) and the pirates, the forest girl Elena, and Nadine the exiled desert girl. The hawk-boy Eveningsong comes to terms with his past deeds, and Jonathan the fiddler discovers the terrible power of magic. From book 1, we again meet bully-boy Marc, who joined Titus's hoard, and Amos, who was conscripted to serve as his healer.
Meanwhile, a few chapters set the stage for the sequel, featuring King Crevan, his evil Mage Ulric, his unwilling seer Argon, a youth named Devon, and Countess D'Mere.
Quibbles: This is the third book in the series, and the best so far, in terms of pacing and flow, even though the book is too long, and several scenes could be seriously shortened (the hike to the summit, for example). Also, the character referred to as Fate is nebulous, as is the Fire-crowned king. These characters feel like poster-board plot-pushers, not real entities.
I will be reading the last book.

Yaaaaassssss! More of KaelxKyleigh!
Since the first book of this series I have enjoyed listening to the audiobook. Derek Perkins did a wonderful job. I always thought that audiobooks will be boring but no it wasn't and I am glad I discovered this series.
So we have some new adventures in this book as Kael and Kyleigh journey to the Unforgivable Mountains. I couldn't contain my scary fangirl grin while I listen to every scene of my number one OTP in this series. Lucky that I was listening to the audiobook in my house. I would have strange looks for my silly grin and my sudden outbursts.
We have some new characters introduced in this book. I am liking Gwen, her wildness is refreshing. Some complain that the male to female ratio in the series is not fair but I beg to disagree. It's not the number of the sex is the matter but the quality of the characters and I say that there is more than enough girl power in this series to contrast the many cinnamon roll men here.
But dang Kael is so savage when it comes to Kyleigh.Tormenting her to ask him to marry her because she hurts his feelings when he asked her. My baby is growing up but at least his character is still the same as in the first book. The wedding scene at the end. My lord! I couldn't help but scream with happiness. Then it's Kyleigh's turn to ne savage and make Kael work to chase her to coperdock. Too bad that this is a YA series, my green minded thought@ went through the roof on the wedding night scene at the end. AGSHDBESJWSJAHAJAHJNWJHEHHEJE!!!
I applaud the author for being consistent in her characters and also her character development is on point. I might ask some pointers in the near future. Kael and friends are back again with another adventure.
This time, the power couple Kael and Kyleigh broke off with their friends and set alone to the Unforgivable Mountains to free it from the warlord Titus.
Different from the last two books, I felt the plot started out pretty well, giving a pretty good transition from the last book. The gold however, can be seen once Kael meets the wildmen, a community of whisperers in the mountains. Here we finally see the Wright in him, learning how to use his powers, and teaching others as well. Similar to the first books, I felt that the overall adventure concentrated more on character development, concentrating on the relationships of each character. The plot moved slowly, the book pretty much just encompassing their journey to Titus and his defeat. It was still fun however, seeing Kael and Kyleigh together again, finally making their romance move and make considerable progress. In my last review, I said that I wouldn't be surprised if another couple gets married, but after reading I was pretty surprised who did. I felt it happened way too fast, but I guess that seems to be a theme on this world.
The book introduced new characters:
- Baird the bard. I wasn't sure what to make of this guy, but he does spout some really useful stuff. His skill of storytelling was really interesting, I wish it was developed more
- Griffith the future Thane. Probably one of the best supporting characters (if not the best) for Kael in the book. I love how he inspires Kael, giving him that creativity Kael so needed. He's the main reason for Kael's growth.
- Gwen the wild girl. Gwen is probably one of the most interesting characters in the series. She's a warrior whisperer, experienced in fighting Kyleigh multiple times. Their dynamic is pretty interesting, and similar to Kael, I'm quite confused sometimes on whether they were angry with each other or not. I kinda suspected that there would be something between her and Kael, but I was so surprised that it got resolved in such a straightforward way. I wish she followed Kael's party in the end, however I suspect she'll show up majorly in the next book.
Some comments on the characters:
- Jonathan/Eveningwing: the mini plot featuring this two, where Jonathan hated the shapeshifters, felt so forced. I already didn't like Jonathan, and so this didn't help whatsoever. Eveningwing is probably one of the most likable characters (up there with Jake), and was basically the hero on the last book. I definitely loved how Jake resolved their conflict, making Jonathan relive Eveningwing's experiences.
- Declan/Nadine: now if someone's gonna get married on the next book, it'll be these two. I'm not entirely sure how tall Nadine really is, but it seems weird that one of the giants would be paired with a mot. We have to consider that Declan isn't really that big, but still.... Their dynamic mostly involves Declan teasing Nadine non-stop, and by the end she seems to be liking him. I don't really feel anything for this couple, and in fact I'm kinda feeling its forced... you don't need every character ending up someone....
- Jake/Elena: I love these two. They only had a few scenes together, and all of them were great. Their interaction towards the inn was pretty funny. We see so many hints of them having feelings for each other. Elena is probably the star of this couple right now, where you see her always hovering towards Jake in a protective manner. She even called him "my mage." Her confession was the best. I wish we had more POVs between the two of them.
- Kael/Kyleigh: the two stars of the show.
Bad:
Is it weird for me that I feel weird about this couple's age gap. Kyleigh is centuries old.. but Kael is like 17 or something. This is totally similar to that Twilight crap 4th book when Jacob saw Bella's kid for the first time. Also, when we saw the flashback through Kyleigh's memories of them meeting for the first time in Kael baby-form, it was weird that Kael didn't have any reaction to that. Anyways, some of the weirdness kinda got mitigated when Kael read the book about dragons, on how dragons love fiercely and they really will only choose one. Still though.. this is probably why I like Jake/Elena a little bit more. When they were talking about marriage, it kinda threw me off on how Kael was repetitively rejecting Kyleigh's proposal. He seemed to be planning something and it wasn't done yet, so he kept rejecting her.. but why did he propose first? Also, when they finally got decided to get married on the balcony scene, I was kinda disappointed on how he just accepted it just like that... I was expecting something more romantic. Oh well.
Good:
Honestly it was pretty obvious these two would end up being together, but the tension between them during their journey was conveyed really well. The switching of POVs played a big part to this, where we see Kael always stepping up his courage, while Kyleigh swooning about him everytime, seeing the way he changed on his stay with the wildmen. In the romance side of things, Kyleigh's POVs feelings were portrayed so well with such colorful imagery it was insane (a good thing). We can see her love, hesitation, recklessness, jealousy, and happiness. All her scenes were great, though it was mainly on the romance side so we didn't get much character development from her.
Notable scenes:
- Kael trying to put down the tree, realizing that his strength comes from people he loves. Really funny when he sent Gwen flying, killing a tree on the way (most of ch. 20). With Griffith's inspiration and Gwen's challenge, this is probably Kael's break, finally making the first steps to becoming the strong Wright he is.
- Forge scene in Kyleigh's POV, seeing how Kael got stronger and wilder (ch. 25). One of the first times we see how Kael is changing on another perspective. Of course Kyleigh loves him, and this is probably one of the times how I notice how much colorful Kyleigh's POV is. We see her jealous and longing. We see her hesitation as she feels the happiness when she saw Kael's gift (in the form of bed and trousers.. nice).
- Kyleigh's monologue when she woke up from being frozen and about to meet Kael (ch. 43: Remarkable Friends). The metaphor of the two rivers were genius. The first river is her dragon half, accepting Kael with love, while the other is her human side, somewhat conflicted about him saving her, because she didn't like feeling weak. It was to my surprise when it was concluded that her human side was worried about how Kael would think of her less because of that. It really showed that in her heart, she deeply loves him no matter how much she rejects it. In the end, we see her brave up and stay with Kael while she's holding him.
- Kael finally discovering her secret about how she can't love him (ch. 45 Fate's Shame). I have mixed feelings about this scene. I was hella excited when Kael saw the book. It was definitely interesting that it immediately switched to Kyleigh's POV. One of my gripes is that Kael seemed too cocky/confident, and probably didn't make the scene that romantic. Seeing it in Kyleigh's POV made it somewhat better though, and Kael's dialogue of her telling her to have some courage was great. I was kinda expecting a more serious, romantic scene, but overall it was still great. Ending it with Elena and Jake stumbling upon them was definitely pretty funny.
- Marriage scene for Kael and Kyleigh (ch. 51 Sun Rises). I really liked the part where Kyleigh pulled out the two rings, Kael realizing that she's been planning to marry him all along. I've expected that the onyx stone pair will be theirs but I kinda didn't expect them as stones for their rings when they get married. It was sweet and simple, and it was great.
- Last but not the least, Elena's confession about Jake (ch. 49: The Giant and The Mot). This was hella cute. Jake again managed to make one of his spells go the wrong way, so him and a couple of people are deaf. As usual, Jake slumped and says all he's good for is blowing stuff up. Elena then comes outta nowhere and tells him she loves how he doesn't like that, how she likes him because of gentle heart. Of course Jake can't here all of this. “One of these days I’m going to be able to tell you that, and I’m going to give you all the love you deserve.”
Fate's Forsaken is back again with the short plot development but immense character development. Kael and Kyleigh finally got together, so I guess it's time for the finale. Looking forward to book 4.

Staying with ~90%.
This was more like the first book, livelier and with more funny moments than the second - but it did not shirk on the backstory. The pace was a bit deceiving in the middle, it felt like it had to get to the final battle soon but there were still some twists to happen.
At this point, there's still one thread left unfinished for the last book.

Book 3 of this series introduces yet another new kingdom of wild warriors and new gifts for Kael to learn. Again we are introduced to new charcters and merge them together in our biggest battle yet. this book will be the set up for the finale book of the series.

Audiobook. Really do like this serious. Very different and keeps you guessing! I love the characters. And the reader is pretty good!!

Dragonsbane continues the adventures of Kael and Kyleigh as they continue to to attempt to retake the Mountains of Kael's homeland! :D We get to see the return of all the characters from the previous books along with new ones who are introduced throughout! :D This has the advantage of putting our characters into into new situations that you would not expect them t find themselves in! :D
Throughout there is a lot of good feeling and humour though as characters go to extremes to help each other and this really helps to distinguish them from the baddies and has you routing for them throughout! :D The Pirates and Giants try to steal the show as well and Lysander and Ayrlin antics and the wedding with Kyleigh with Lysander giving Kael a push is hilarious! :D
While the are grim chin moments throughout the good nature of the characters and humour lowing really let the book and the action is brilliantly handled! :D
Dragonsbane clearly sets up the next in the series with Countess D'Mere and King Craven about to get their comeuppance and at the same time their is the mysterious nature of the Fire-Crown King to be sorted! :D

Throughout there is a lot of good feeling and humour though as characters go to extremes to help each other and this really helps to distinguish them from the baddies and has you routing for them throughout! :D The Pirates and Giants try to steal the show as well and Lysander and Ayrlin antics and the wedding with Kyleigh with Lysander giving Kael a push is hilarious! :D

I liked most of this book, whole series had me enough to look forward to each book. I like how the powers were developed, but i feel like i dont know what a whisperer healer does, since he was obviously using craftsman abilities to heal. Does that not make craftsman also able to heal? This was omitted in my opinion and I think it has something to do with the material being affected, maybe they cant do anything with flesh? No idea, I wish someone would let me know if i missed something since this is the only reason i did not put 5 stars, this book does everything right except how the backup gets to where it does so quickly, time frames in my opinion, do not fully add up. The combat is once again vague like in the other two books, but enough that the epic scenes played out well in my head which i like. (gets boring when everything is fully described and leaves nothing to the imagination). Still confused on the lack of no weapon but a bow, especially given his training with a staff back in book one though.

The last third of this book made up for the first 2/3rds which were a little boring and frustrating. It also has me looking forward to the last (?) book in the series!
Likes:
- The return of all my favorite characters.
- Once Kael stops being a whiner, he actually becomes a good leader. He lives up to being a Wright.
- Baird was my favorite new character from this book.
- The romance between Kyleigh and Kael was actually decently written.
Dislikes:
- Wasn't too fond of Gwen. She needs to chillax.
- I thought it was kind of random how Jonathan was so angry at Eveningwing. It felt like such a forced plot point.
- While I'm on the topic of forced plot points, I was a bit irritated at how indecisive Kael was at the beginning of the book. Also his constant whining. Ugh. I get that it makes his eventual character growth more meaningful but it felt so forced considering what he's already been through in the last 2 books.
- Why does everyone have to get hooked up?

This 3rd installment in the Fate's Forsaken series is a good but not quite great addition to the series. Obviously readers of this book will be well acquainted with the characters and plot. While it is interesting to see the character growth of Kael, the "love" plot was almost too distracting to the storyline. While not as distracting as that of the Green Rider series, it still seems over-done. While I am pretty sure that the target audience of this series are those that are considered "teens" the writing style regarding the romantic interactions between the multiple couples in the series feels like it was written by a 16 year old with no real grasp on what love really is having no experience in that dance.
While I am looking forward to the conclusion of this series, for me, it almost seems too drawn out and could have been concluded in this book. Time will tell.

I have enjoyed reading books one and two very much. It was a long wait for this one- I like both the writing and the story-telling in these books. I appreciate any author who can produce stories and characters that are as interesting and well-crafted as these. I have been reading fantasy and sci-fi for many years, and I know Good books are a bit hard to find - these books have a lot of depth in the characters and story. Kael is a bit hard-earned and stubborn, which gives him his own distinct view on his situation. All of the characters are very well-drawn- the giants are great! All in all, very well done- now to wait for book 3----

I haven't read such a complete series in my 27 years of life. Fates Forsaken has it all from Love to Magic to the most evil people in the kingdom. I absolutely lost myself in these books. I believe my only gripe is that Kael is so damn stubborn, He had me pulling my hair out. Every person in these books are bought to life through the writing and leave a mark on your soul that you'll remember them forever. I am so glad their is a forth book and Kael and Kyleigh's story isn't done. Summer 2015 is too far away but i'll survive and Shae Ford was so nice to let me know the forth book is called Daybreak which is awesome. This series is my number one favorite series I plan to recommend it to everyone and reread the whole series before this summer.

OK this book was hundred times better than the previous two. In this book the protagonist truly transforms into a powerful character as was indicated from the beginning but not shown until now. Here he takes command and shows strength of character. The story also moves forward and many plots were unraveled. The most important part for me was that he learned what it means to be wright and was 'awakened'. In the previous books he was shown a weakling which i hated the most.Also the romance between the hero and dragoness was beautiful and not frustrating like in the other books. all in all this book saved the series in my opinion from being a loser.

Another good book in the series. I didn't know there was going to be a fourth though! I feel that the author has set up the next book pretty well. I don't think this is one of the greatest series I have read, but it does keep my attention and the author does a pretty good job of developing the main character and making you like him. I eagerly look forward to reading the next book in the series once it is released!

Loved Kael's growth in this one both as a warrior and leader and as a whole person. Really glad he and Kyleigh finally got together took long enough for that stubborn dragoness. Some things seemed rushed though and some were just a setup for the conclusion of the series. Amos going off and dying immediately after being rescued was a bit weird but well what can you do.
Anyway it was a good read.

Great series
Don't think I reviewed books one and two. They were good, four star books. This one took it up a notch for me. Really liked most characters, and the groups they hailed from. While I wasn't exactly surprised much, I felt the story moved well enough that it wasn't even an issue; the storytelling is first rate. Definitely recommend

If not for the king still being at large and the black dragon I would have been happy to have ended this series at Dragonbane, fantastic ending. Still I'm looking forward to the conclusion of this series in the next book, wild ride so far.

What an amazing series!
These books just keep getting better! The author brings the world and each character to life in a way I haven't experienced in any books since Brandon Sanderson's. If you like fantasy even a little, you won't be disappointed!!!
