To be honest, I did not go into this book with any expectations. It’s the first ARC I ever read so I was just excited for that. But then I started reading the book. And. Literally. Couldn’t. Stop.
This book was so bingeable and such a page turner. The plot was super nicely put together with such a beautiful writing. I haven’t read a lot of stories with a morally gray FMC, so I was really glad to get to know Medusa. For the first book in a series, this one was genuinely interesting. It introduced the world, the characters, gave us a nice detective story line and also a lot of tension. Medusa’s story just broke my heart and I hope to see more of her healing process in the next books. My girl needs a therapist asap. Overall a very nice read that I would recommend to a friend.

"All jobs have value if you knew how to twist them to your advantage"
I absolutely DEVOURED this book! This is easily one of my favorite retellings I’ve read. Castle took a familiar story and completely made it her own while giving the characters so much emotional depth while giving millennial undertones.
First, I absolutely loved how Castle allows the FMC to fully experience and express all of her emotions while still giving her the opportunity to seek the vengeance she deserves. She isn’t forced to simply move on or forgive, and I loved watching her anger and pain become part of her strength. Her journey felt incredibly powerful because she was allowed to feel everything while still taking control of her own story.
Castle also did an amazing job balancing the plot and romance. Neither one completely takes over the book, which I really appreciated. The first book definitely has a LOT of world-building, but it’s done in a way that keeps you engaged rather than putting you to sleep. There is so much information to learn about this world, but it feels purposeful and helps build the foundation for what’s to come.
Another thing that really stood out to me was the commentary surrounding society and those in positions of power. Castle does a fantastic job showing how people in power can get away with horrific behavior, brush things under the rug, and manipulate situations to protect themselves. She also does a great job showing the consequences of that behavior and emphasizing what should happen when people abuse their power. It added another layer to the story that I really appreciated.
But my absolute FAVORITE part of this book was how Castle portrayed a woman who experienced SA. She was written as a SURVIVOR, not simply a victim. The author allowed her to be angry, disgusted, hurt, and furious. She didn't make her trauma her entire personality, but instead allowed it to become part of her motivation and her strength. I loved seeing her reclaim her power rather than being defined by what happened to her. And that itself deserves an applause.
Overall, this was an incredible retelling with phenomenal character development, a well-balanced romance, fantastic world-building, and an FMC who is allowed to feel EVERYTHING. I am absolutely invested in this world and cannot wait to see where Castle takes the story next!

This was so good!! I typically have a soft spot for Greek mythology, and the way Lena Castle interpreted the myths and characters was so compelling and fun to read. I truly enjoyed all of the interactions between Medusa and Triton and would feel warm with all of the sweet ways they showed they cared (even if it was reluctantly). I adored Scarlett and Bisky, and even though Raia had me feeling a little suspicious, I loved the way she looked out for Medusa. The ending was not what I expected, but it does make me super excited to see what else will happen in the next book.

Received this as an ARC and really enjoyed it. A good mix of fantasy while still feeling current. Interested to see where the next book takes us. The tension....... good lord lol all that tension and not even a kiss? A little spice would have been an interesting addition in light of Medusa story but we will see what happens next book
*Update* author notes there is no spice until book 3. Seems like a long time to wait for ANY spice. Not saying the story isn't good without it just.....idk 2 books of longing is a lot.

I have been waiting for a Medusa fantasy or fantasy romance for a long time! Ever since watching 'Clash of the Titans' as a little girl, I fell in love with her. In my mind, she represents female rage and revenge with the power to turn anyone to stone for crossing her. There are such strong emotions associated with her for me. This book, however, missed the mark completely on conveying any of that emotion. I feel like this is one tick away from being a "Cozy Fantasy" or "Cozy Mystery". If that's what it's going for, it mostly hit the mark.
This is a murder mystery fantasy. A genre I truly adore when done right. But this entire book seems shockingly similar to another popular dark romance series I've read... down to some of the smallest details of how the crimes are planned & committed. Without getting into spoilers here, I just could not help but compare this story to another that is written much better. From the way the FMC and MMC meet, to the preparation for the murders, to the supposed chemistry between them (which I found sorely lacking).
The characters felt very one dimensional. I did not feel, connect or care about them at all. They seem to have some intrigue between them, but the feeling isn't there. There was no depth to their emotions, and they just suddenly appear. Know what I mean? Like, they began existing when the story does, with one storyline exception that delves back to one event in the past. I don't feel they are real people, with pasts and emotions. They were on the page to do a job; finish this particular story. That's what it felt like. The romance between the characters was non existent. I was expecting slow burn with tension and banter. None of that exists.
There are also plot holes everywhere. As a major fantasy reader, I know how to suspend my disbelief for a fantasy world, but I find there are certain places I just cannot do that. For example, there is no background checking, resume or interview whatsoever to get the FMC a job in THE ROYAL PALACE... LIKE, THE ONE WITH THE KING IN IT!! Even though she is referred for the job at the palace by the Prince, who IS A COP!! Like, what? Even with all the MMC's intrigue about the FMC, he never checks into her before she just starts working there and gets a room to live in the palace! I call bull! These type of inconsistencies happen throughout (not time to name them all) and I just could not get my brain to fall for it.
Moving on... another topic is the SA that runs throughout this book. Sure, there are trigger warnings. But, there are multiple storylines that require SA to happen or be mentioned and described. This is where the author lost me entirely. There's a right and wrong way to portray SA in your story. The wrong ways were chosen here. Flippant discussions about SA that just seems to happen all the time and everyone knows about it and it casually comes up in conversation, even with the police, and then those people just go about their day. So, yeah. I'm sorry, but SA is a topic that needs sensitivity, feeling, emotion, outrage, growth, SOMETHING. It's not just a tool to get your story going. Or something to give you a reason for a mystery. It is discussed in this book as casually as the weather.
All in all, this is Atlantis! The author had an opportunity to build such an amazing world from the setting! Yet, there is nothing. No world building whatsoever. The author had a story line that could have led to those strong Medusa emotions, but all of that fell flat. There was no growth from SA. There was no emotion tied to anything. It just... existed on a page.
Overall, very disappointing. Thus, 1.5 stars.

I don't even know how to explain the emotions this book brought out of me.
Medusa has always been remembered as a villain, but this story makes her human. It doesn't erase the darkness of her choices or ask readers to see her as perfect, it allows us to understand the woman behind the myth. I found myself feeling angry, heartbroken, protective, and completely invested in her journey. More than once, I wanted to reach through the pages and give her a hug.
The author takes incredibly dark themes and handles them in a way that creates an emotional connection rather than simply relying on shock value. Some scenes were genuinely heartbreaking, and I was honestly amazed by how boldly the story explored pain, survival, and the consequences of being treated as a monster by the world around you.
The mystery was compelling enough to keep me turning pages, and I finished this book in one day. The investigation, twists, and emotional stakes carried the story beautifully.
While there is tension and yearning between Medusa and Triton, I appreciated that the story didn't depend on romance alone. The slow burn elements and banter were well executed, but the mystery and Medusa's personal journey remained at the heart of the story.
This is a very modern take on Greek mythology. Readers looking for a traditional retelling with familiar mythological storytelling or extensive worldbuilding may find this approach different from what they expect. Personally, I thought it was creative, refreshing, and memorable.
The modern elements brought a unique charm to an otherwise magical world.
The worldbuilding was the one area where I wanted a little more. I love getting immersed in fully developed worlds, and I would have enjoyed more time exploring this version of Atlantis. However, being thrown directly into the action also created a fast paced reading experience that made this book incredibly easy to devour.
What stayed with me most was Medusa herself. I feel strangely protective of a character who has spent centuries being labeled a monster. This book reminded me that myths often leave out the humanity of the people at their center. A clever, emotional, and unforgettable retelling. I'm already looking forward to the next installment.
For readers who enjoy dark mythology retellings, character driven mysteries, morally complex characters, and stories that challenge the way we view familiar legends this one is worth picking up.

After getting assaulted 7 years ago, Medusa is finally ready to get her revenge. Pastry chef during day and killer at night, she hunts the men who hurt her and a chance encounter with Triton, Poseidon’s son, gets her a job at the castle with even better access. But Triton is the detective who is looking for the killer and with him constantly asking her out and her growing complicated feelings despite insisting on only using him, getting her revenge keeps getting harder than she expected, especially since one of her targets is his father.
I knew I was going to enjoy this book when I read the blurb but omg it was incredible, I absolutely loved it! I was hooked from the first page, the plot was so interesting and keeping me on the edge of my seat with that murder mystery and how both cases were connected and trying to figure it out. And of course I adored all the characters. Medusa was such a badass FMC, my heart was breaking for everything she went through and was still dealing with in this book but she didn’t let it break her, she became even stronger and I loved seeing her get her revenge, I can’t wait to see her again in book 2. Triton was exactly the cocky but protective detective I wanted him to be, the way he kept asking her out and was falling for her fast despite her not exactly being nice to him all the time but him not giving up was so great to read about. Their relationship was definitely a slow burn but there was so much tension and he was yearning for her and I loved the knife to throat scene and all the banter, I also liked how unsure he was at times and even awkward when it came to dating, he was such a green flag (despite the slight stalking) and they were incredible together, I can’t wait to see them again in the next books and am dying to see him realize she is the killer he’s been looking for.

Just finished Stone Cold by Lena J. Castle and I have thoughts. This one's a gritty, myth-inspired retelling of Medusa's story, set in this fully realized underwater Atlantis where gods, mortals, and monsters are all tangled up together and it's part crime thriller, part revenge story, part slow-burn romance. The prose pulls you right in.
What really got me was Petra Nekros, aka Medusa herself. She's fierce, but she's also carrying so much pain, and Castle doesn't flinch from that. Her hunt for the men who destroyed her family feels raw and real this isn't a pain that gets romanticized or smoothed over. It's messy and honest, and it says something true about survival, about justice, about what it actually costs to take your power back in a world that's stacked against you.
Triton is such a good match for her Poseidon's detective son, carrying his own weight, and the one person whose magic can't get a read on her. Their chemistry is electric. Lots of banter, lots of suspicion, that slow-burn tension where you can feel there's more coming in the next books.
The plot itself is tight two investigations running side by side, a serial killer targeting women and Medusa's own campaign against corrupt officials, and somehow Castle keeps both threads sharp. The world-building is gorgeous too, this blend of Greek myth and noir with real political stakes underneath it. Her dialogue crackles, and the detail work especially in the crime scenes is so precise.
I do want to flag: there are content warnings here, and for good reason. The book deals with sexual violence, murder, and trauma pretty directly. But it never felt gratuitous to me — every hard moment was in service of the character and the story, not just there for shock value.
If you're into dark, feminist reimaginings of mythology, morally gray characters, plotting that actually holds together, and a romance simmering underneath it all — Stone Cold delivers. It's a strong opener for a trilogy, and I'm already bracing for how much deeper this is going to go.

Her hunt for the men who destroyed her family feels raw and real this isn't a pain that gets romanticized or smoothed over. It's messy and honest, and it says something true about survival, about justice, about what it actually costs to take your power back in a world that's stacked against you.
Triton is such a good match for her Poseidon's detective son, carrying his own weight, and the one person whose magic can't get a read on her. Their chemistry is electric. Lots of banter, lots of suspicion, that slow-burn tension where you can feel there's more coming in the next books.
The plot itself is tight two investigations running side by side, a serial killer targeting women and Medusa's own campaign against corrupt officials, and somehow Castle keeps both threads sharp. The world-building is gorgeous too, this blend of Greek myth and noir with real political stakes underneath it. Her dialogue crackles, and the detail work especially in the crime scenes is so precise.
I do want to flag: there are content warnings here, and for good reason. The book deals with sexual violence, murder, and trauma pretty directly. But it never felt gratuitous to me — every hard moment was in service of the character and the story, not just there for shock value.
If you're into dark, feminist reimaginings of mythology, morally gray characters, plotting that actually holds together, and a romance simmering underneath it all — Stone Cold delivers. It's a strong opener for a trilogy, and I'm already bracing for how much deeper this is going to go.

I don't usually read detective/crime-solving stories, so this was a little outside my usual comfort zone. But add Greek mythology and an extremely slow burn and apparently I'm in. 😂
And when I say slow burn, I mean SLOOOOOOW burn. The yearning was delicious. I loved how quickly Triton became curious about Medusa, the different masks he wears depending on the situation, and the darker side underneath all of that. Meanwhile, Medusa brings exactly the kind of female rage this story needs. I just wanted to shake her occasionally because girl... 🙄😂
I also liked that the book didn't drown me in worldbuilding. The mythology and Atlantis are there, but the focus stays mainly on the characters and the mysteries surrounding them. The crime-solving actually kept me interested too, and while some questions were answered, I definitely have theories about a much bigger picture. There are also several people I'm currently looking at VERY suspiciously. 👀
It wasn't particularly dark by my standards and it didn't destroy me emotionally, but honestly? It was a really enjoyable, surprisingly light read for me. The ending felt less like a brutal cliffhanger and more like the end of Season 1 - enough resolution to feel satisfying while making it very clear there's much more coming.
And yes. I want Season 2.

Lena just KNOWS how to write rich characters, easy banter, chemistry that oozes off the page, and a plot that keeps you up saying “just one more chapter” until the wee hours of the morning; this book was no different!!
Medusa is dead- sort of. She was supposed to die but she survived when her family didn’t. Now, she’s out to get revenge on the men who wronged her and her family. The only problem is that the detective who is tracking her crimes might be the dreamiest son-of-an-enemy to exist. Not only is he tracking her, unknowingly, he’s also tracking the now-serial killer who started with her family!
This book kept me on my toes and left me craving more! The chemistry and tension between Medusa (Petra) and Triton was absolutely delicious. I was craving every interaction between them.

Finally a 'retelling' of Medusa's story that casts her as something other than a monster. Sure, she still turns men to stone but who can honestly blame her.
Medusa is out for revenge on the men who took her family from her. All the way to the top of the government of Atlantis; including Poseidon. What she didn't count on in her quest was Triton, a sharp detective who is investigating a string of murders in the city, while also pursuing the new enigmatic palace chef. If her secrets get out, it could get messy.
I really enjoyed the book, right up until it hit my biggest pet peeve-books that end without really wrapping up the story they started. But I'm willing to overlook a little since it was very cleverly written.

I can honestly say I loved this boom and can't wait for the next one. I am a sucker for all things Greek Mythology and this did not dissapoint. I like how both main characters are portrayed and even at the beginning of the story it did not feel slow or boring like some books do. Even great books feel a bit boring at first but this one was not. The story is engaging and can be a bit heavy just because of the backstory of the FMC but it is wonderfully written. The book had it's funny moments as well and so far I gotta say I'm loving the MMC. I would only like a bit more world building that I believe will make this story even better! All in all I loved it and will read the rest of the series!

Medusa x Triton is not a couple that I see too often and add in a good murder mystery I am so there. Medusa and Triton were made for each other in this story. Triton becomes so caring when he is around Medusa, which is so different from other versions of this character. The characters are so easy to love in this universe. The world building was very good and easy to follow as we work towards solving this murder mystery. I can’t wait to see how much their relationship progresses and what also will go down in the next book.

I feel like this is going to be a true slow burn romance. Not even a kiss in Book 1 and it has been confirmed there will be no spice until book 3.
I found this to be an easy and pleasant read. The world building was excellent and the syntax made it super wary to follow.
FMC is morally gray, but her backstory invokes a lot of empathy for the reader. MMC feels like he’s going to pan out to be a true “I’ll do anything for love” hero but that remains to be seen.
The Serial Killer x Detective trope doesn’t feel forced, but I do feel the plot moved a little slow for my liking.
Regardless, I am looking forward to reading book 2!

I’ll start this by saying my knowledge of Greek mythology is virtually nonexistent so I have absolutely no knowledge of the Medusa story.
I loved the morally grey FMC, made a very nice change to it usually being the MMC. The elements of a murder mystery actually worked really well for me. The MMC history could use some more explanation but I’m hoping that comes out in the next book which I will definitely be keeping an eye out for.
Enjoyed that most characters had some sort of back story, rounded out the whole of the supporting cast who can sometimes be written very one-dimensionally.

Cat and mouse games with a morally gray FMC that gives Dexter vibes? Count me in!
This dark fantasy retelling of Medusa made for a fun read. I immensely enjoyed the cat and mouse games Medusa and Triton play. Give me all the tension! I love me a good slow-burn! This was such a fun read I read in a day! The Medusa retelling was so unique! I love how us as the reader knows she is the killer and the MMC is the one detective trying to solve these murder mysteries, so we can just watch to see how it all unfolds and connects. It was such a good slow burn and it was so endearing the MMC was a littleeee awkward with how to handle the spitfire Medusa was lol. I'm looking forward to seeing where book 2 goes and the hopeful reaction to her being the killer!

I love this story's version of Medusa with a modern feel but still have Greek aspects. But the characters were a little flat and the author could have done more with the setting. It's Atlantis, there are a lot of possibilities that could be done. Also, with SA being a major part throughout the book, I like the revenge plot but there were a lot of plot holes that needed explaining. Maybe book two would clear those plot holes.

Stone cold is a modern telling of Medusa. It is a dark romantasy and the first in a trilogy.
The banter, tension and emotions between Medusa the fmc and Triton the mmc is top tier and leaves you wanting more. I can't wait to see what develops between them in the next book. Their relationship is a slow burn and there is awkwardness but I think that's what gives it more satisfaction lol. I became so invested in seeing the story develop and couldn't put this book down once starting it. The author did such a great job with incorporating dark themes to show us back stories of the characters. I got emotional a few times.

First I loved the author’s style of writing! She was very descriptive in the story, characters were well developed and the plot was there. I personally love fairytale retellings and different POVs, especial from a villains perspective full of female rage and revenge so I really I enjoyed this one. This retelling will make you empathize with Medusa and root for her in the book, I would definitely recommend and would plan on reading the sequel.

I love retellings of the Greek gods but this was definitely a new one. I was absolutely sucked in and it was so interesting to read a detective take on this story. A strong woman who seeks revenge on the men who destroyed her. A detective investigating serial murders including her murders.
