A truly touching and heartbreaking story, so strongly told. It’s an homage to the men who had to hide everything for a moment stolen when nobody was looking.

This novella introduces Thomas before Crimson, and gives us some backstory into his military service and what shaped his strong character and deep desire for connection, all the while guarding his true feelings from the public eye.

In the Navy, in Washington, DC, in the months before the War came to include the US, Thomas works translating intercepted communications in a small office with Nate, a signal guy. Their supervisor is an imposing man who has seen his share of loss and looks after the two men who churn out important work to help assess German movements in the Atlantic.

Nate sees through Thomas’s carefully crafted shell and drops some carefully worded hints that they may have a shared secret. Over months of careful, clandestine meetings, they form a strong bond that opens both men up to the possibility of love and not just acceptance of longing.

The story is well crafted, with a pace that feels both urgent and slow moving. Much of it is set in evenings and dark offices, so the one poignant scene set in the sunlight stands out as extraordinary in all ways.
