Meet Moxie and Hannah: two best friends who discover they break up with men for opposite reasons and decide to swap exes. Moxie's since found her forever, but Hannah's love life is stuck in awkward mode. When Moxie suggests a go-with-the-flow practice date with her ex, Simon, things don't exactly go smoothly... until they realize they're better at chatting behind a screen than face-to-face.
A game designer by trade, Simon creates a digital universe, where their practice dates turn into true connection-and maybe, something more. With a mischievous beaver in tow and forest fires on the horizon, Hannah's busy rescuing wildlife and learning to let go, while Simon is working up the courage to stand up to his family in a winner takes all bet for the family business.
A charming tale about love, friendship, and finding your footing-both in the real world and beyond.
Kelly Ohlert and Linda Floyd’s An Uncharted Ex-perience is a light, fun romance that leans into friendship, second chances, and stepping outside your comfort zone.
The story follows Hannah, whose love life hasn’t exactly worked out, especially compared to her best friend Moxie, who’s already found her person. Their friendship is a big part of the story, and it feels real—supportive, honest, and a little messy in the way close friendships can be. The idea to “swap exes” is what sets everything in motion, and it gives the story a playful starting point.
Hannah is easy to root for. She’s trying, even when things feel awkward or don’t go as planned. When she reconnects with Simon, things don’t click right away in person, which actually makes their relationship feel more believable. What’s interesting is how their connection starts to grow in a different way—through conversation and shared space online. That shift gives the romance a modern feel and shows a different side of how people can get to know each other.
Simon adds a nice balance to the story. He’s thoughtful, a little reserved, and dealing with his own pressures, especially when it comes to family expectations and his career. His work as a game designer plays into the story in a fun way, especially as it becomes part of how he and Hannah connect.
The romance builds slowly, which works well here. It’s not about instant chemistry—it’s about getting comfortable, opening up, and learning to communicate. At the same time, both characters are dealing with things outside the relationship. Hannah is focused on her work and responsibilities, while Simon is trying to figure out how to stand up for himself. Those personal struggles add depth without making the story feel heavy.
The pacing is steady and easy to follow. There’s a nice mix of light, funny moments and more meaningful ones, so the story never feels too serious or too shallow. The setting and side details—like Hannah’s work and the little touches of humor throughout—help keep things interesting.
The writing style is simple and conversational, which makes it an easy, enjoyable read. The dialogue feels natural, and the tone stays warm and relaxed from start to finish.
What really stands out in this story is how it shows growth—both in relationships and individually. It highlights taking chances, being open to something different, and not letting past experiences completely shape your future.
If you enjoy romances that are more laid-back and character-driven, this is a good pick. It has a similar feel to The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary and Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren.
Final Thoughts: An Uncharted Ex-perience is a sweet, easygoing romance that focuses on friendship, growth, and unexpected connections. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best things happen when you stop overthinking and just go with it.
If you've ever mentally rehearsed a conversation six times before sending a two-word text, Hannah is your person. An Uncharted Ex-perience centers on a woman whose dating anxiety is so viscerally, painfully real that I genuinely felt secondhand nerves reading her early scenes. Kelly Ohlert and Linda Floyd — a mother-daughter writing duo, which is just the most delightful fun fact — have created a romance that opens quietly but builds into something genuinely sweet. Hannah's awkwardness isn't played for cheap laughs; it's rendered with enough specificity that it feels true. Her meet-cute setup is charming and a little unconventional, and the way she and Simon gradually find their footing together is the heart of the story. Simon brings his own complications — he's not without flaws — and watching both of them figure out how to actually talk to each other is where the book earns its warmth. The pacing does take a little while to find its stride; I noticed the story moving slowly in the first few chapters before it clicked into gear. But once it did, I was genuinely invested. The relationship development feels earned rather than rushed, and the communication dynamic between Hannah and Simon is handled in a way that's refreshingly grounded. What makes this one stand out is the authenticity of the anxiety rep and the fact that it's written by a mother-daughter team — you can feel the collaboration in the warmth of the storytelling. A sweet, character-driven romance for readers who love a slow build and a satisfying payoff.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for the author and publisher for letting me have the opportunity to be an ARC reader.
Hannh and Simon are both awkward people when it comes to dating. Their dates with and without each other had me laughing a lot. I enjoyed the their relationship growth with each other in real life and on in their virtual world that Simon built ( Simon is a game designer). I had a good time reading this book. The characters and their personalities suited well with each other. I still think its cool how Simon being a game designer played out. Could this book done with a bit more spice? Yes! This one spicy scene was so hot. Could have done with one, maybe two more scenes similar to the first one.
Without giving too much more away, I would recommend this book to someone who needed a quick cute read.
One huge issue for me with the actual ebook itself, was there was too may words typed together and too may big gaps in between words too. As a dyslexic, I had trouble reading the over all ebook in some parts. I even changed my font size to see if that was the issue but it made no difference.

We need more romances with sweet, awkward nerds finding love!
My favorite parts of this book all revolve around Hannah and Simon both being so amazingly awkward and overly self aware. Their nerdy awkwardness was different but of the same brand and it made for the most tender, memorable, and silly moments in the book.
Hannah and Simon’s romance evolves both online and in person, both of which were a delight. They and their meddling friends are well developed. I would have liked to see though some therapy rep and smoother story transitions. The wildfire story arc in the background of their romance felt especially left field and was perhaps only included to help tie in characters from the previous book in this series (which I’ve not read). Overall, this was a delightfully quirky romance but not my favorite read.
Read AN UNCHARTED EX-PERIENCE for ✌️ Dual POV 🤓 Nerds being their wonderful, awkward selves 🤣 Laugh-out-loud romantic comedy 🎮 Virtual world and IRL dating 🤺 Feuding brothers 💼 Family conflict 😈 Meddling, outgoing friends 🦫 Wild animals as roommates
🥰 Thanks to the author for an early ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was such a unique romance book. Something about the unconventional, quirky main characters made the story so much more interesting. I really liked how their relationship developed naturally and they really were the effortless friends to lovers.
Hannah is the kind of person who wants all the information and genuinely tries to help you solve any problem whether you want her help or not. On the other hand, Simon is a total gentleman who really just wants to code, make video games, and live far far away from his brother. Together they are the most awkward, adorable couple. Their quirks and how they work together just makes so much sense.
The only reason this book was not 5 stars was the last 100 pages. Simon's reaction to Hannah's mistake felt out of character and just didn't sit right with me. I do understand that everything in his world was unraveling in that moment, but come on it was SO PERFECT before that. Also, I wish there had been more groveling and redemption on his part after that happened. Still the ending was great and really I loved seeing them as a couple!
This was a pretty quick and light read. It's the second in a series- the first was Moxie's story, which I did not read, but feel like if I had, I would have connected more with this book, which focuses on Moxie's best friend, Hannah.
Hannah has a lot of trouble with dating, as she carries a little notebook around to write down things she learns about her dates so she can plan future ones. It's never gone over well so when Moxie says she'll introduce her to Simon as a practice date, she agrees. Simon isn't looking for anything serious, as he doesn't plan to be around for very long, so it's the perfect solution for both of them. They get along great and become friends first, which eventually leads to something more.
This book is a little cringey, not necessarily in a bad way but both Hannah and Simon are so quirky that it often veers too much in that direction. This is a relatively short book and the word awkward is said about 30 times throughout. Which is A LOT. I get they're awkward but I didn't need to keep being told over and over.
The editing needs a lot of work before publication, a lot of words are combined and Simon is even called Noah at once point, but since this is an ARC I'm willing to let that go and assume it will all be cleaned up before release day.
Thank you to the publisher for providing an E-ARC via NetGalley!
This was such a cute storyline. The characters are all well thought-out and developed. Their development throughout the story made a lot of sense and the problem-solving was genius. The storyline itself was very different to romance books I’ve read before - with the concept of practice dating and so on. It puts a fun spin on what I would classify as friends to lovers (and you know it’s a fun spin when you don’t really know which trope it counts as haha). Even the parents and the motley crew they had going on around them were hilarious side characters that were developed enough to give color and depth to the story without being overwhelming and feeling like people are introduced for no reason.
The sweet story of Hannah and Simon - two awkward daters who practice dating each other and turn out to be the perfect match. The concept of the virtual dating world was so sweet and I liked the development of their relationship. I really like to see the awkward shy characters find happily ever after.
A couple items that weren’t for me:
The sibling rivalry between Simon and his brother was tough to read but I hate having good characters have to deal with crap family dynamics.
The wildfire story line felt a little rushed and seemed to come out of nowhere where. It did end up creating some cute and funny scenes later on though.
Thank you Kelly Ohlert & Linda Floyd for providing this ARC. Comments and opinions above are my own.
This book was the perfect palate cleanser after the heavy dark fantasy series I just spent a week living through. 😅
An Uncharted Experience is lighthearted, but also subtly insightful, and the non-traditional characters offer up a refreshing story. I loved that the primary romance centered around a tech nerd and a girl struggling with chronic anxiety—it was relatable and real, especially since I’ve dealt with anxiety most of my life.
The story unfolds in a way that kept me hooked (even in its simplicity), and I ended up reading it in less than 24 hours. Exactly the kind of escape I needed. Highly recommend if you need some encouragement in your day.
Oh my gosh!! This was such a cute, fun read. It was lovely seeing the way Hannah and Simon fall for eachother, even with all their quirks. It really goes into each of their flaws, yet what I love the most, is when those flaws can be loved irregardless! And with that, of course, we get to see a charming, early 2000's rom-com vibe that this book gives. Cosy rom-coms that give you all the feels.
It was written well, giving you the feels of a romance that is raw and real. It's everything you want in a good romance book, including a touch of spice and angst for balance.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers and author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This book was actually such a cute little awkward nerdy romance and I loved every second of it. This book had me giggling. I loved the main characters and honestly I somewhat related to their awkwardness and anxiousness with social interactions. I thought that Simon was such a sweet mmc. I related to Hannah so much in the way that I love to remember the little things about people. I loved Moxie and Wyatt as side characters. Honestly this book was a light read and put me in a great mood. This book was chaotic in the best way and anything but predictable. Reading this book had me laughing out loud often. i definitely recommend this book!!
What happens when two people who are socially awkward on dates start dating each other?
An Uncharted Ex-perience is a fresh take on modern day romance. Hannah a control freak and Simon a pushover when it comes to family meet through their friend Moxie. While they fumble in the beginning, they take their respective skill sets and come up with solutions that work for them. The story was lighthearted, relatable, and a quick read.
To say I absolutely LOVED An Uncharted Ex-perience by Kelly Ohlert & Linda Floyd is a massive understatement! It was quirky and cute and the love story was weird and awkward in the best ways. I was so invested in both Simon and Hannah that when big conflict finally hit my stomach SANK- rooted for them from the very beginning and loved seeing them work through things together. Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing for the ARC!
At the beginning of this book, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to finish it. I felt that it was very cheesy, and the gaming element was a little much for me.
I am glad that I pushed through and kept going. I did feel that it was a little slow in the middle, and I started to lose focus.
There is some spice, but not a lot. I did like that there was another story line other than just the romance.
I was really excited to read this quirky romance, and it didn't disappoint. I loved how awkward Hannah and Simon were, but they made it work. I was cheering for them each to find something special in the other.
This was a very enjoyable story. I loved the online world he created for her and i loved their chemistry, the way they were meant to be. I think the corporate family crisis part of this is not as original but i still enjoyed the read.
Thank you to netgalley and the author for sending me the book in exchange for an honest review
