Hayley Makk, a wisecracking 17-year-old high school dropout, works as a cub reporter for her dad’s independent tabloid newspaper in Halifax. She’s alone in the newsroom when a call comes through on the scanner. The cops have discovered a blood-spattered shack in the woods, where they believe a teenage victim has been murdered in a botched drug deal.
Just as she’s pursuing the first big scoop of her career, Hayley is pulled off the story by her dad, who forces her onto a research trip with her former biology teacher, to study a rare sea turtle and earn the final credit for her high school diploma. But the murder and the rare sea turtle turn out to be inextricably linked, and a tangled web of clues lead Hayley and 19-year-old RCMP officer Alex Turpin into a dangerous sting operation that leads to an unexpected villain.
"Endangered is a gripping tale, an adrenaline-driven adventure, chocked full of suspense. It will hold you hostage until the very end." -- Rick Mofina, International Bestselling author of FULL TILT.

I received this book free for review from the author or publisher in exchange for an honest review. Despite the privilege of receiving a free book, I’m absolutely candid about it below because I believe authors and readers will benefit most from honest reviews rather than vacuous 5-star reviews.

The nutshell on this book is that teen girl in Nova Scotia has to chase a mysterious turtle to pass her senior year biology class and graduate. Along the way she finds that things aren't as simple as she first thought.

For YA fiction I look at three things. Firstly, does the book have anything in it that I wouldn't want my own teenagers to read about? In this case, I don't see anything terribly inappropriate. There is mention of alcohol and sex but neither is shown in a light that makes them out as terribly glorified and it doesn't promote them.

The second is whether the book has any positive themes that I'd want my kids to latch on to. In this case, I'm not seeing a lot of strong moral underpinnings here. There is a string of environmentalism and kids are shown a positive example of finishing up high school and making the most of educational opportunities but there's no grand moral arc here.

The third is whether I think my kids will enjoy it. In this case, the audience seems rather narrow. Those who share something in common with the protagonist might latch on to it but the actual plot is rather more Hardy Boys than I think modern readers will appreciate.

In summary, there's nothing negative about the book but it is rather light and fluffy. More Hardy Boys and hard-edged. The whole thing unrolls in a rather predictable manner that makes you think that the good guys got their reward while the bad guys paid the price. Pretty standard stuff really.

PS: I hope my review was helpful. If it was not, then please let me know what I left out that you’d want to know. I always aim to improve.

Didn't realise that this was a YA novel when I pulled it, but never-the-less found it well written, interesting and the plot was well done.
Read it yourself or give it to a young person you know. I'd say 12 and up.

I was pleasantly surprised by this little book set in Nova Scotia. It was much better than I was expecting it to be. Moved swiftly through a series of conflicts for the characters. It's on the shorter side so didn't get bored with long winded backstories. Well done!

All Hayley wants to do over the summer is to write articles in her father's newspaper. Finally getting a big case with a possible murder, she is extremely excited, but quickly disappointed when she is forced to go on a boat trip so that she can pass the class preventing her from graduating. What seems like a boring trip to find a turtle soon turns into a full-out police case with drug-dealing and shootings. Is the endangered turtle somehow connected to the murder?

I requested this book the same time as I requested The Shadow of Seth and to be completely honest I was way more interested in this book. The other one sounded good, but this one attracted me with all the talk of the rare, endangered turtle. Endangered sort of disappointed me while The Shadow of Seth really surprised me. For some reason this one just really fell flat for me.

The main character, Hayley, sort of annoyed me. I didn't really like how it didn't really faze her that she was so very close to graduating and she would rather be a reporter than graduate from high school. I'm sorry to say it, but if in 20 years her father doesn't have his newspaper business she will never be able to get a job at another one without at least a high school diploma. She would be broke with no job. I know this isn't a real story, but sometimes characters annoy me when stuff like this happens.

I might have enjoyed this more if I had some background knowledge in reporting or the newspaper business, but since I do not I found myself getting a little bored. Overall it was an okay book for me but I can honestly say that I liked The Shadow of Seth more. I might recommend this to you because of what your interests might be, but I think I would be more likely to recommend The Shadow of Seth if you are looking for a fast-paced YA mystery.

***Thanks go out to the publisher, Poisoned Pen Press, for sending me an ARC of this book and The Shadow of Seth to read and review. This did not influence either review or rating in any way.***

Endangered: Mystery on the Daily News Beat (A Death on a Deadline Mystery Book 1)
5.0 out of 5 stars
Gripping Thriller With a Teenage Heroine,
I really enjoyed this book right from the first page. It is certainly one to get your attention and I really empathized with Hayley, the main character, and I didn't want the book to end. It's a good story too. With another thread involved, it might seem that it's going to be confusing but it isn't.

Seventeen-year-old Hayley Makk lives for finding a good scoop so when she finds a dead body and a shack covered with human blood she thinks she has it until her father takes her off this to go with her biology teacher to find a rare sea turtle which will count towards her high school diploma -- which doesn't please her too much. But she sets off with another student.

They spot it but can't tag it.

Then a fishing boat comes along whose sole task is to capture this turtle; they see the teacher and the two students and shoot at them, which makes them abort the expedition.

So for Hayley it's back to the body.

She finds out that a local teen was killed in a botched drug deal, but then it gets strange.

Hayley finds a connection between this and the turtle which is to be "trafficked."

She needs to stop this at any cost.

A fantastic read, fast paced and so interesting. I loved it, most definitely a five star read

If I could give it more stars I would. – Angela.

Rating: Five Stars.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. This does not influence my opinion of this books. That being said, this book was just okay. The main character was irritating to me. She was pretty judgmental and selfish. I just did not find myself rooting for her. The plot was just mediocre. It was not very surprising or suspenseful, especially for a mystery book. The way that it was written did not excite me or create suspense. I did not hate this book but I also did not love it. This maybe because I am not into journalism so some of the nuances in this book might have eluded me. I think the biggest disappointment was the main character. I expected more from her and she did not deliver. Also I was disappointed by her "love interest" Alex. She was obviously crushing on him but I just don't trust him. He seemed really shady to me and she was oblivious to it because he was hot. I guess the end of this book just does not sit well with me.

You might enjoy this book if you are into journalism but I would not pick it up if you are just looking for a good mystery. I did not enjoy it enough for that. I hope you do enjoy this book if you do read it because it seems like with the right person, it could be great.
Happy reading.
