Templetons don't break down. Even when their worlds are falling apart.
Eric Templeton's well-ordered life as a top CIA agent is shattered when a traitor within the agency plots to have him eliminated. Sent on a bogus mission to Africa, Eric is ambushed and critically wounded. A helicopter pilot flies him to a remote mission hospital where Dr. Brock Whitfield and his daughter, Ellie, work to save his life.
If Eric survives, his life may never be the same, and he still has to deal with the traitor who wants him dead. Eric wants justice, but Brock and Ellie know that Eric's survival is the least of his worries. What he needs most is mercy and truth.
I never grow tired of hearing people's story of how they've become saved. Especially when the story is full of adventure and danger. Saving Eric is a love story that shows God's love. A story of broken people, mended by God's power.
From the description of the book, I expected a spy-tale with action and thrills with a good mix of romance and God. THAT'S NOT WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT. I want to make that abundantly clear before you purchase it.
That's not to say that this isn't a good book. This IS a GOOD book, but it's a character driven novel that focuses on relationships, not on plot or action. It's 50% romance, 40% forgiveness, at 10% action. Eric has to reconcile with God and his past. The book deals primarily with his relationships to others - God, his doctor/mentor, his girlfriend, his dad. He has to deal with weakness and convalescence. He has to work to find identity through God and not through how others see him. The book is poignant and well-written but not action filled.
Recommended for readers who enjoy romance and redemption stories. Not recommended for readers who are seeking plot twists and action.
OK ... had an absolutely horrible time putting this one down!
CIA Officer Eric believes his mission is to catch the insider who set up the operation that killed his friend/mentor/partner and informant. But instead, he winds up in a trap that gets him shot 3 times and nearly loses his life. Through all of the medical ups and downs, the mission hospital staff refuse to give up on him. Can Eric find the faith and inner strength to overcome whatever is thrown at him?
Doc never dreamed that a part within his own past would come back to him once more....
Plucky Ellie only knows the quiet, tender, determined man she has been taking care of, but can she put away her own fears and learn to trust - and love - another guy after the last romantic disaster?
Toby, Eric's buddy, who has gotten him out of a lot of jams
Nicci, the favorite cook (and party planner)
The mission docs, particularly Rocco and Will. An orthopedic specialist doc.
A bitter old man. A nurse who turned Hospice Care to help others.
Oh, can't forget the kitties and pooch either.....
And finding that when fears, frustration, and anger appear to turn to God for help... even when He doesn't answer the prayer the way we want Him to.
Oh .. and it's a contemporary book. Some CIA stuff, some medical suspense, complicated relationships, purring & nosy kitties, and love through several challenges.
I eagerly look forward to reading the other books in this series! Saving Eric (The Redeemed Side of Broken Book 1) by Joan Deneve
I’m just going to say right out that I loved this series! I found them nearly impossible to put down. So many of the characters have become what feel like real-life friends, and Brock Whitfield has joined Jan Karon’s Father Tim on a pedestal I never thought Father Tim would share with anyone!
I devoured all the details about life as a medical missionary in Angola. I laughed and cried with the characters as they struggled and loved and came to know God in ways they never imagined. But most of all, I found myself begging God to grow my faith and to grant me the grace to know Him as several of the characters did. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the entire series!
A must read for anyone feeling lost and unloved. So many flawed characters seeking redemption while the story moves like a modern mystery to the very end. Easy to read and enjoyable for all.
Joan Deneve tells an exciting story filled with heart pounding, heart throbbing action and love. The story combines the danger and catastrophe of intrigue and espionage into of forgiveness and mercy.
The characters are living and breathing believable, even the secondary ones. Eric who has drilled into himself that failure is not an option is betrayed in the twisted world of spying and finds his mission has gone south and he's seriously wounded. He flown to a remote Christian missionary hospital by a friend who is an ace helicopter pilot. The strained relationship between Eric and his dad give a view into Eric's past and formation. Eric's spiritual transformation is believable and touching and so is his growing love for a special nurse.
Excellent story from one of the best storytellers I know. Not a CIA spy novel, not a romance, not a mystery, but the author uses the suspense of catching a mole, the blossoming of a new love, and the healing of a broken body to portray how God has woven the flawed lives of the characters together in a sovereign way to champion for the soul of a worthy hero. Read this book for the great depth of the characters, the winding and well-paced plot, and the redemption that comes from lives totally surrounded to the love of God. Would that more men were like Brock and Eric, heroes that will leave a lasting impression long after you've read the last page.
Saving Eric is so much more than a romance or suspense novel. It's so much more. When Eric Templeton is critically injured in a mission gone wrong, he's sent to an African clinic to recover from his wounds. Nothing is an accident. Eric's arrival provides Brock, the clinic's director a chance at righting a long ago wrong and a remedy for his daughter, Ellie's broken heart. But Eric's purpose isn't done. He's been set up and faces the reality he may lose his badly injured leg. But his trials aren't limited to Africa, back in the United States, circumstances force Eric to return to his father as a failure. Saving Eric is the story of second chances and the redemptive power of Christ.
