This is my favourite May Archer book! I had SO much fun reading Holden and Merritt's story that I didn't want it to end!!
The whole reformed thief / sheriff trope was just so fun from beginning to end, not to mention the fake fiance aspect. I just loved how Merritt and Holden were head over heels and how their bond developed so quickly.
The Callahan family were thoroughly entertaining and I LOVED the training they were doing, and the whole camp in general. I would kill for a short story showing the Axfords taking part too - Ames and Robbie would be hilarious!
Devon was a giant cockwomble and I just wanted to shout at the dude to take a fucking hint already... he was exhausting!
Rome and Nico were also hilarious and I'm so happy they get a bonus short story because I was pretty obsessed with them too.
This was just such a joy to read and it's going to be hard for any other Axford pairing to top this book.

Take a family of thieves + one small-town sheriff + freckled photographer + serious hijinks = buckets of fun (and one teeny tiny heist)
This is my favorite Axford Brothers book to date.
Holden & Merritt are so good together!
I loved Merritt's crazy family; they may have been criminals, but they were good people.
The wrap-up of the heist was rather silly, but this is a romance novel, not a thriller, so I'm not too mad about it.

This one was a lot of fun. A fake engagement where a sheriff spends time at a family thief camp? Gimme gimme!
I’m properly crushing on these two’s relationship. Holden, our gorgeous rule follower, and Merritt, who comes from a family of thieves; they couldn’t be more opposite but there’s this magnetic pull between them that’s very real. I adored how they love what the other brings to their lives, how much enjoyment they get from being in each other’s company.
I can absolutely see why Merritt finds Holden so adorable. He is so FRICKING ADORABLE! And maybe letting himself be a bit oblivious to all the clues about Merritt’s family’s job, but still adorable as heck. Protective and kind, how sweet he is with the kids… Please excuse the swooning over here. And that Britney Spears musical moment? I LOVED IT! So darn funny!
I adored how being around Merritt’s family makes Holden feel lighter, freer. And the effect he has on the family. How they adore and accept him so quickly, despite his occupation complicating things. I loved it all!
These two have both kept themselves from having anything long-term for different reasons but finding each other sees them wanting a real future; Merritt wanting to put down roots for the first time while Holden sees himself as more than just the sheriff. Love makes him see a different side of things and our strict rule follower starts to consider bending rules for the guy he loves…
Despite the obvious complications about their relationship, these two couldn’t be cuter fake fiancés. Even though they hadn’t known each other long, they were meant to be, and I had all the feels for them.
These two are good for the soul. They had fun, I had fun. These two – this group of people even – made me giggle at their shenanigans. The Merritts’ version of camp sounds like a cracking good time to be honest. Where do I sign up? 😂
This is my second book by May, and both have been such comfort reads. Perfect for a chilled weekend away, which is where I read this one. It was a great book to relax with, and I can totally imagine rereading it on a cold crisp day wrapped up in a blanket. It’s lighthearted, low angst and just a thoroughly good time.
Can’t wait for True and Milo! And I’d love to Rome’s story too.

Holden Axford is the Winsome Sheriff. He’s loyal, responsible, a rule follower, witty, and not looking for love in any way, shape, or form. He’s a one-and-done type, and he tries to avoid his matchmaking mama's attempts at all costs.
It turns out that a one-night half-stand with Merritt Callahan isn't as anonymous as hoped, and things get too close for comfort, as Merritt is friends with one of his brother’s partners. And now he’s remembering the good parts of the night that he does remember clearly and trying to talk himself out of wanting to go back for a second helping. And his brain misfire causes him to volunteer to not only drive Merritt to his family camping vacation but also to stay there and pretend that he is his fake fiancé in front of Merritt's family. He is just protective like that.
So now they’re definitely too close for comfort, and the initial attraction that started it all is back in full force. Neither of these guys wanted a relationship; that’s problem number one. Problem number two is that they don’t live in the same area and Merritt is a traveling photographer. And problem number three is that Merritt’s family are (secretly) former thieves, while Holden is a small-town Sheriff. And lying to everyone (sometimes even themselves) is also another problem. Messy, messy, messy.
I loved seeing Sheriff-Stick-Up-His-Butt start to let go and have fun, enjoy life, and have passion outside of work. And Merritt has been running so long and just alone, and I enjoyed seeing him reconnect with his family and also feel safe, protected, and cared for by Holden. Their chemistry is amazing and they balanced each other well. They both see to the heart of each other to what the other needs, unfortunately there is a secret and some obstacles to navigate and they could be a deal breaker.
This is a small-town, one-night stand that kept going, opposites-attract, fake engagement romance with plenty of family shenanigans, secrets, lies, humor, and a pinch of suspense. It brings back the other Axford Brothers and their significant others and their parents, as well as introduces Merritt's quirky family. I have really enjoyed the series, and I’m excited for the last Axe brother, True, to find his true love. I am excited about the match up that was teased.

May Archer's books never fail to make me happy and Axe Backwards is no different! My cheeks hurt from how much this book made me smile. There was just something so pure and joyous about this story and I loved every second of it!
"Is it possible to die of adorable? Asking for a friend."
Holden and Merritt are so perfect for each other. These are two men who couldn't be more different. Holden's the law abiding, rule-following homebody while Merritt is the reformed thief, who's constantly flitting from one place to another. But where these two align is in their love and loyalty to the ones they care about. They love with their whole selves and it's no surprise that once they found each other, they fell so hard and fast.
"I want my camera in my hands right now. I want to preserve this moment for eternity so I don’t forget again. But I could take a thousand shots and still not capture everything I feel for Holden Axford."
I loved following these two as they went from fake fiance's to real love. The Callahan family camp was such an entertaining setting for this story. The adventures, the heisting, and the surprisingly wholesome family vibes just made this book so fun. I loved seeing Holden charm the Callahan clan and fall for them in return.
“You take what you want. You hear me, Merritt? It’s yours.”
For all the smiles this book gave me, it also had me shedding a few tears. Merritt's heart to heart with his family, and the moments when Holden and Merritt truly opened themselves up to each other were so sweet and they got me right in the feels. The way they confessed their feelings for each other was also so heartwarming and it just made me love them more.
"When you need me, wherever you need me, for as long as you need me… I’m with you.”
This might have been a fake relationship romance but there's nothing fake about these two. It's clear they belong together from the very beginning. From Merritt's constant delight for Holden's rule-following to Holden's protectiveness and his obsession with Merritt's freckles and pretty green eyes, I just couldn't help but fall in love alongside these two. If you're looking for a book to make you swoon and smile, I'd highly recommend picking this one up! And once you're done, be sure to pick up the bonus short because those two had me swooning too!

Holden Axford is the straight-shooting sheriff of Winsome, Vermont who is on medical leave after being shot and suffers of late from insomnia. While out drinking one evening meets Merritt Callaghan, reformed member of his thieving family. They end up at his mother’s inn where, after some making out, Holden falls asleep before anything major can happen. They did not exchange names but meet the day after at his family barbecue. The next day, Merritt was supposed to head to his family camp week with his friend Milo, but at the last-minute Milo gets offered a collaboration with another social media influencer. He can’t refuse it, so Holden offers to drive him there. When they arrive at the camp, they meet Merritt’s ex, Devon, and suddenly Holden proclaims that he and Merritt are engaged. During the various activities, they end up falling in love. What nobody counted on was Devon conning the whole family into the heist of a damning book.
The book has many humorous parts that make it a fun read. There is little angst in the story, but the main characters are both in their heads for various reasons. In Merritt’s case, he feels guilty that he hasn’t yet told Holden that he was a thief and that his family are all thieves. This gives rise to a lot of humour because Holden has no idea of the family’s profession and, of course, they’ve just arrived in a marked sheriff’s SUV. As for Holden, he’s wondering what’s really going on and he helps plan a heist that he thinks is fake. There’s plenty of steam as they believe that the end of the week will be the end of their relationship. It’s fun to see the rules-obeying sheriff participate in an actual heist that saves the relationship. Holden’s matchmaking family is left out of this story since they have no idea where he is, but that’s easily made-up for by Merritt’s family who end up warming up to Holden ad encouraging Merritt to pursue the relationship. The “secret” relationship between Merritt’s brother and member of an “enemy” family across the lake is fun with both denying that there’s anything there.
I truly enjoyed this book. There is no real requirement to have read the previous installments, but it helps place the recurring characters.

Phenomenal. Wonderful. Best Axford Brothers book yet, and I have absolutely loved each of them individually so much!! They are hard to compare as the tropes are so different, characters are unique, stories take different paths, but this one….. Oh. My. Goodness. Gah!!!
Ok, this one at first had me messed up. I had really adored sweet, sweet Holden in the previous Axford books. (You don’t have to read the previous books, he is a side character and beloved, this book is where you get to know him more.) When the character of Merritt was introduced as his utter opposite, recovering thief to his absolute law abiding sheriff?? I really wondered. I totally trusted May. That trust is well earned and I laughed and fell in love with this book so fast! <3
I don’t want to include spoilers as this is such a fun book! I will admit the curveballs she threw in for kicks, because she worried I wasn’t riding the edge of my seat enough (?!?!), made me wonder at times how this would end. May Archer has creativity coming out of her in endless amounts! Like, holy smokes!! Like, oh, there’s a twist and I think they’ll do this, but let’s throw another one in to mix it up a LITTLE bit more… I didn’t know if I needed a nap or a drink after a couple scenes! It was like I was there with the characters, cheering them on! Lol!
Anyway, Holden and Merritt are two complete opposites that meet and stumble into a week together around Merritt’s crime family. Holden is not only a wholesome sheriff, he’s an award winning sheriff. Merritt is trying to hide what his family does. Holden believes he is protecting Merritt from an interfering family by pretending they are engaged.

Ok, this one at first had me messed up. I had really adored sweet, sweet Holden in the previous Axford books. (You don’t have to read the previous books, he is a side character and beloved, this book is where you get to know him more.) When the character of Merritt was introduced as his utter opposite, recovering thief to his absolute law abiding sheriff?? I really wondered. I totally trusted May. That trust is well earned and I laughed and fell in love with this book so fast! <3

Straight onto my Favourite Book list for this one, it had me smiling from start to finish and actually laughing out loud on numerous occasions.
I don't want to give too much away but the scenes at camp when Merritt takes Holden with him as his fake fiancé for the annual family get together are inspired madness!

Holden's been around the previous two books, he's Winsome's Sheriff, a by the rules kind of guy - or is he? Well, let's just say that as his feelings for Merritt grow, so does his willingness to go with the flow and perhaps some things might get a little bit bent along the way.
I adored Merritt's family, they were an absolute riot but I also loved that they loved him completely too, even though he'd left the family business of being in acquisitions for his life as a jobbing photographer.
The banter is en pointe throughout, as are the hijinks that everyone gets into while preparing for the annual camp heist, and Merritt and Holden get even more emotionally attached while also burning up the sheets of their too small double bed!
There wasn't a single thing that didn't work for me with this narrative, out there as it is, because May just writes things so well that you're willing to go along for the ride.
It's funny, it's heart-warming, it's about family and finding a place even when you've changed, it's about love and responsibilities and it's about showing up, even if you don't necessarily agree with what's happening.
Plus, there's also a bonus short story featuring one of Merritt's brothers and a rival family member which is also superb and just brings even more fun and frolics to the party!
Next up is Milo and True's romance and, if everything follows like the other Axford brothers' stories, it's going to be a cracker! Can't wait.

Book three of the Axford Brothers Series was as amazing as the first two. I urge you to read the series in order to know all of the characters, and because it's simply fantastic.
Holden's older brothers have found their forever person, but Mr. Devoted-to-His-Job Sheriff is married to his career. He can't see ever dating, let alone settling down. I love how Holden is over the top and super strict with his rule-following, and his growth the author treats us to.
Holden is recovering from a gunshot wound, and even though he saved a man's life, he still finds fault with his actions. Merritt is visiting his good friend who happens to be together with Holden's older brother. Holden and Merritt meet, and their attraction is off the charts.
Merritt is one of the more complex and interesting men in the series. His family, which he tries to avoid as much as possible, is basically a network of thieves. Merritt left at eighteen and has not been part of the family business for a decade. The problem is, while he detests what they do for a living, he truly loves them. I fell in love with the whole family myself. The Callahan crew Ms. Archer created are career criminals who are simply great people.
Merritt falls hard for Mr. Follow the Rules, but how can this work out? He doesn't want to compromise his family or destroy Holden's position as a sheriff. Yes, there was insta-love, but I was shocked at how well this worked out.
If you love zany characters, crooks with good moral values (yeah, I can't figure out how the author did this either), and two wonderful men that have to work out for a future because that would be a criminal offense, you will enjoy this book. Happy reading.

Oh this book. Be still my sappy romantic heart. I loved every bit of it. The opening scene. The lies. The ridiculousness. The chemistry. The swoons. This love story had all the best elements woven beautifully together into a heartwarming romance full of life, love, laughter and all the feels. Merritt is a professional photographer who comes from a family of thieves. He has not been involved in years and never participated as an adult. He is silly, joyful, and nomadic. Holden is the sheriff in small town Winsome, VT. He has a regimented structured settled life and is having difficulty with his purpose while he’s on medical leave after being shot. Merritt is in Winsome to support his good friend, Griffin who planned the pickle festival. Merritt and Holden meet in a bar and agree to a spicy night that did not go as planned. Then when Holden volunteers to drive Merritt to his family’s week long camp, he follows it up with announcing they’re engaged. Thus begins the lying to Merritt’s family and Merritt lying to Holden about his family all in the midst of fun family bonding time. This is almost a cliche of an opposites attract story - the lawman and the thief - but oh boy was it so much more than that. It was written perfectly about two complicated messy humans doing the best they can in their imperfect humanness. But it was not just swoons and laughter, there is spice and big emotions too. Holden and Merritt’s chemistry sizzled off the page, pulling them together into each other’s arms and each other’s forever, no matter how hard they tried to resist or how different their lives look. I love Winsome, the Axfords, and the matchmaking side characters. I am excited to read True’s love story next.

I have to say that I loved everything about this book. It's my favorite (so far) of the series. The dynamics between Holden and Merritt just clicked with me as it did between them. They couldn't be any more different. Holden, a sheriff, lived for his rules. His job became his identity. He was stable and grounded for his family and his town. Merritt was a reformed thief from a family of professional thieves, who never put down roots. He traveled the world, once as part of his "professional" family and now as professional photographer. He saw and lived for the fun in life.
When the two of them saw each other across the bar room, it was immediate attraction from that moment on, only getting stronger with each minute they spent with each other. They both brought out what was missing in the other's life: Holden found fun again with Merritt and his family, Merritt found stability and a feeling of safe with Holden.
The fun parts were watching Holden navigate camp with Merritt's family, with each family member working hard to hide their former criminal talents from Holden. I loved how close Holden and Merritt became during this week.
I will be preordering True and Milo's book Smart Axe soon. I need to know how those two unlikely characters got together.

Both because his ex will be there, and because he hates his family talking 'shop' at camp, and he figures that having an outsider there will limit the amount they can discuss crime.

But when Merritt’s ex is there and some confusion leads Holden to think Merritt needs protecting, Holden oversteps and the fiance ruse begins. But Merritt and Holden find that what starts as a ruse could possibly be more if secrets and danger don’t ruin everything first.
I love May Archer and she did not disappoint with this one! Holden enjoys the Callahans immediately without knowing the truth behind the family since he is able to just let his hair down and have fun. Merritt is trying his best to put his family’s business behind him but also struggles to keep his grabby hands to himself when it comes to Holden. He and Merritt were immediately a couple I wanted to see work out because they were well matched and had great chemistry. The Callahans as a family are such a great compliment to the crazy people of Winsome, VT. Just a fun mix of spice, sweetness and chaos.

Here she goes a slightly different route compared to the first two books in the series; we have rule follower sheriff Holden meeting his perfect match in Merritt who comes from a family of thieves. He is not a thief anymore, instead dedicating his life to go around the world taking beautiful photos that often win awards, but bringing a sheriff into a week-long family camp? Maybe not the brightest idea. And someone mishearing they're fiancés? That definitely brought some added spice to the situation.

OMG, this book was hilarious. The way that I giggled my way through it, that hasn't happened in a while and it made my weekend.
When we met Holden in previous books, we saw a man that takes his job as an Sheriff very seriously and that he doesn’t have time for romance. But when he meets Merritt, something shifts and it's not just the tent that falls (IYKYK).
Merritt also feels the pull, but thinks their almost one night stand is the last of it. Until he needs a ride to his family's summer camp get-together and one thing leads to another and all of a sudden he has a fake fiancé. A fake fiancé that after awhile doesn't feel so fake.
But with Merritt and his family's past as not so law-abiding citizens, can he and Holden have a future?!? Especially when he needs to do one last job…
I adored Holden and Merritt, from their almost hook up to their fake engagement to getting their HEA, you just knew that they were IT.
If you love meddling families and things going haywire, this is the book for you.

This is such a fun read. I adored Sherriff Holden, and ex-thief Merritt from the start; they are kind, generous men, and together they are everything good. There is an instant attraction between them, but just to complicate things, they come from opposite sides of the law, and when Holden suddenly pretends to be Merritt’s fiancé, the fun begins. Merritt is part of the nicest criminal family I’ve ever heard of, and I don’t know if his dad was named Butch, after Butch & Sundance, but I hope so because that seemed so fitting with the family.
There is nothing not to love about this book; it has a captivating plot with a dash of angst, fabulous characters, funny bantering, hilarious moments, a sweet romance, and steam. It’s an addictive read, so set some time aside because once you start, you won’t be able to put it down.
I highly recommend this book and also the bonus story giving Roman his own HEA.

May Archer totally knocked it out of the park with this one. Sharp humour, witty, brilliant characters, and laugh out loud moments on every page. An absolute blinder! 🤣🔥
She writes the fake engagement setup perfectly. Holden, Winsome's extremely noble but hot sheriff, steps up to save his one night stand, Merritt (Merry) Callahan, by randomly claiming to be his fiancé. The catch? Holden accidentally fake dates his way right into a week long camp with Merry's family of professional, art stealing thieves. They really have never come across a heist they didn't like! I loved how clueless Holden was initially, watching him casually plan a 'mock' camp heist alongside actual career criminals is so funny.
The family dynamics on both sides are pure comedy. On one side, you've got the Callahans, Merry's gang, whose motto is 'Callahans don't get caught' and who treat thievery like a normal family hobby. They are utter chaos and have no shame about their lives of crime. Then, on the other hand, Holden comes from the Axfords. They have no personal boundaries and are terrible meddlers who love sticking their noses into one another's love lives.
The chemistry between Holden and Merry is sizzling, the banter is brilliant, and watching the whole fake dating thing develop into real feelings is just so cute. She writes the fake engagement setup perfectly. Holden, Winsome's extremely noble but hot sheriff, steps up to save his one night stand, Merritt (Merry) Callahan, by randomly claiming to be his fiancé. The catch? Holden accidentally fake dates his way right into a week long camp with Merry's family of professional, art stealing thieves. They really have never come across a heist they didn't like! I loved how clueless Holden was initially, watching him casually plan a 'mock' camp heist alongside actual career criminals is so funny.
The family dynamics on both sides are pure comedy. On one side, you've got the Callahans, Merry's gang, whose motto is 'Callahans don't get caught' and who treat thievery like a normal family hobby. They are utter chaos and have no shame about their lives of crime. Then, on the other hand, Holden comes from the Axfords. They have no personal boundaries and are terrible meddlers who love sticking their noses into one another's love lives.
The chemistry between Holden and Merry is sizzling, the banter is brilliant, and watching the whole fake dating thing develop into real feelings is just so cute. Wow, this is a rollicking good time from beginning to end. Think the unlikeliest unlikelihood then triple it and add in some more “that couldn’t happen”s and you’ll start to get to the heart of this tale.
The characters are all delightful but the nieces are inadvertently hysterical little ninjas whom I couldn’t help but adore.
But Holden Axford (whom we’ve met before) has layers far more significant than any I could have imagined. And Merritt Callahan is appealingly perfect for him. Their insta-love, fake-engagement, forced-proximity romance is everything, plus Holden throws in a side of protectiveness (bordering on jealousy) that just works for readers and for Merry.
The games, the outfits, the hijinks, the teasing….it all makes this book so exquisitely easy to read and enjoy. 5 fabulous stars.

I fell in love with Holden and Merritt. Holden is the resident Winsome sheriff, probably voted most likely to follow his strong moral compass and rule book. Merritt is a reformed thief, who currently makes his living as a photographer. In a twist of fate, after a hook-up that never really gets off the ground, the two run into each other again, and suddenly Holden finds himself committed to taking Merritt to his annual family camp week. In true MA style, hijinks ensue in all the best ways, and love finds the pair. This one is filled with moments where I laughed, moments where I wanted to shake them, and moments where I wanted to hug them both. It’s impossible not to love Merritt’s family and root for the pair to find their HEA.

Oh my goodness. Such a fun read. Holden is going to crack y'all up. This was such a great story. The author did an amazing job of giving us a story that was worthy of these two. I really loved the characters in this book they were amazing together. The storyline it's not something you read every day it was definitely different which made it that much more exciting not that it wasn't already but I just love when something is different for me and I feel like I'm getting something new and not something that's been done over and over again. I read probably all the books that this author puts out I really enjoy their writing but I have got to say this one is probably closest to the top of my list of being one of my favorites that they write.

This book was so good. It was so fun and sweet, I it enjoyed a lot. I loved both Holden and Merrit, I loved Holden protectiveness and to read how he allows himself, little by little to have fun and admit he's not only a sheriff. I loved Holden, he's so sweet and actually carries some fear and hurt, that he realises he needs to let go to be really happy. They are good together, they complete each other. The small town and families shenanigans are just a delight to read.
This is the third book of the Axford Brothers series, can be read as a standalone but would recommend to read the series in ordre (all books are good). I can't wait to have True's story.

We get to see the third Axeford brother fall. This book was so much fun to read. This is a true opposites attract romance. Holden is a rule following sheriff while Merritt and his family have made some questionable criminal decisions in their lives. The whole fake fiancé part just added another layer to this story. Merritt's family is a hoot! His nieces are too cute with sass. Holden fit right in with them, but Merritt is keeping a huge secret from him about his family. Such a great cast of characters expect Merritt's ex. This book had me hooked right from the beginning with the morning after and then the fiasco with the tent. I knew I was going to love this book with it's great sense of humor. The little tease we got for the next book has me eagerly awaiting it!

An adorably hilarious and also touching story between the Sheriff and the son of master criminals. What could go wrong? Especially when you throw in a friendly game of ‘heist’ with a neighbouring crime family, and a slightly unhinged ex.
I love Holden. The kind but stern Sheriff and Axford brother. He spends his whole life being helpful and respectable.
Now he’s pretending to be engaged, training for a ‘heist’, and finding himself enamoured with a family who are holding a big secret.
Merritt is likable and a bit messy. Struggling to create a life outside the family business, but also loves the chaotic bunch. Still wanting someone to have his back, to support him in what he wants from his life.
What may seem like an unlikely pairing makes perfect sense in the end.

While hurt on the job Holden is required to take the time needed to recover snd ends up meeting and getting tangled with Merritt Callahan and his kooky family. Merritt left the family business to follow his dream and become a renowned photographer, but once a Callahan always a Callahan and with the help of Holden they find ways out of being fully back into the world he so successfully ran from. Holden leans what is right in the way of the law doesnt mean its always best for all involved. The evolution of this couple draws you in and keeps you ensnared for the truth to fully come out and see if they can successfully make it together with all cards on the table.

Like all of May Archer's books, this one was an utter delight! What impressed me most about this story was the author's witty, hilarious writing. I love a lighthearted romance, and this sheriff / retired thief story delivered beautifully. The character development was terrific; I loved how both Holden and Merritt were equally fascinated with each other right from the jump. The pacing of their emotional journey was spot-on and there was lots of fun along the way, including a fake engagement and lots of Callahan camp week action. All of the side characters were interesting, relatable people and I look forward to True and Milo's story next. Highly recommended!
