About the author

I am a Native of New Zealand now resident in Australia, working in a large public hospital in Melbourne. For several years I studied and wrote screenplays, one of which was optioned by an academy award winning Screenwriter in the U.S. In 2003, I was introduced to an elderly gentleman "who might just have a story worth telling". The day I met Lale Sokolov changed my life, as our friendship grew and he embarked on a journey of self scrutiny, entrusting the inner most details of his life during the Holocaust. I originally wrote Lale's story as a screenplay - which ranked high in international competitions - before reshaping it into my debut novel, The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

Heather Morris delivers an emotional and heartfelt story filled with grief, hope, human connection, and the impact one life can have on another. The relationships and emotional moments were the strongest part of the novel for me, and the story carried a sincerity that made it easy to stay invested.

A touching and reflective read for readers who enjoy emotional contemporary fiction.

an emotional read from Heather.I enjoy reading her books.Jess is only 15 and dying how the family copes in different ways. She has a wish that with her help of Alex, will her wish become true? a great read. I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.

I found this book almost unreadable. I saw another review which said it reads like a screenplay, and I agree whole heartedly - each sentence seemed more like a stage direction than a novel. This writing style annoyed me so much that I found myself just skimming to try and get to the end.

I also didn’t understand what made the wish itself so “groundbreaking and impossible”, apart from everyone in the book saying so. The end result didn’t even sound like a video game, more a film.

I am clearly in the minority though, so maybe it’s just not for me.

A sad read and true reflection of childhood cancer with a heart-warming wish element which brings heart

Having read Heather’s Morris in the past and loving her historical fiction, I happily dove into this new novel.

We follow Jessie who has childhood cancer, her family, Kelly her social worker and Alex who is brought in to create her wish.

With sub plots of marriage and familial difficulties, workplace harassment and romance, these all add depth to a tragic story.

Some of my favourite quotes/poems are as follows:

“There is no such thing as false hope, there is only hope”

“My darling girl, my heart, my soul, through every tear you make me whole. Your strength, your smile, your gentle face, you’ve shown me love and light and grace.

Should time be short, and skies grow dim, you’ll be my life, my constant hymn. Nothing can change what’s always true – My love, my heart, will stay with you.

Should you soar beyond this world, I’ll feel you near, my precious girl. In every place, however far, you’ll be with me, bright shining star.”

This is Heather Morris’s first contemporary book, and you can really feel that she has lived this experience. One example was the sentence “Thank you for not asking me how I am. You know people still ask me that when, duh, it’s obvious.” Heather, accurately portrays the difficulties within marriages living through childhood cancer and shows the effects on Jessie’s younger sibling, Sam.

Alex is a good addition to the story. He initially joins in with the wish reluctantly and as his back story comes out and his connection to Jessie and the team builds, he becomes a staple in the story and one the reader routes for.

For me, this lost something in the believability of some of the interactions within the medical team and the responses of the Father. Having a friend who has lived through this journey, some of the reactions did not seem to fit with reality. In addition, I genuinely felt that the workplace story did not quite fit and although it is meant to convey frustration and harassment, I felt this could have been a little more cohesive.

This has been a heartfelt read and Jessie is a truly beautiful character, inside and out. The hot air balloon moment just whisked the reader away into her world. I was there with her throughout. I would recommend, both a heart-warming and heart-breaking story including family, friendship, romance and truth.

enjoyed this bittersweet novel about loss and for the future

After attending a book showing hosted by the author, and reading her previous works I was looking forward to reading ‘the wish’, however after reading it I am left disappointed. Much of it is expected, with the language used by the kids unlikely to be realistic or even the scattering or technical words that leave room for improvement. Alex seems not to like hospitals until about 20 pages in when he can’t get enough of being there for Jesse; while Dean the father takes on a very angry and frustrated emotional storey line. His behaviour isn’t really challenged and it’s as if the author assumes a farther would only act this way and no other emotions could be shown. The odd romance between Kelly and Alex, it made little sense, other than their involvement with Jesse; which to some extreme was against all professional boundaries. Overall, I was looking at giving this book 3 stars, but after reading it to the end 2 stars and that won’t be altered.

I would suggest reading the book yourself as this review may just be based of my life experience not agreeing with the language or situations discussed.

Whew.

The story seems like it would be compelling - three together a lively teenager dying of cancer and an adult who is a grumpy loner and watch them change each other’s lives.

That is not what we get.

My first concern is that the writing felt juvenile, with a lot of tell instead of show, and a lot of repetition. It felt like the first draft as written by an overeager high school student.

Jesse and Alex were lovely humans and I bought their bond. Tears were shed.

However, the love story made no sense. Additionally, Jesse’s father’s anger was weird and misplaced and the suddenly gone?

The teenagers didn’t sound like teenagers and the adult conversations were stilted.

The entirety of the book is predictable and there are no surprises.

I do not recommend this book.

I went into this book thinking I was going to love it, because ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ was an outstanding read. The description sounded intriguing and I was certain it was going to be a tearjerker.

However, the execution fell flat for me. I couldn’t get on with the writing and the characters just felt two dimensional for some reason.

Not a bad book, just not for me unfortunately.

This had an interesting concept, but it fell short for me because I never quite felt for the characters. Yes, children and teens dying of cancer (or any other disease) is horrifying and sad, but these characters all seemed one-dimensional, caricatures that were given directions on how to feel and act. It never seemed fleshed out and so made it difficult to connect to them. Another review mentions that it reads more like a movie script and I agree with this assessment. I wasn’t pulled into the story with Morris’ trademark rich writing. With books such as Before I Die and The Fault in Our Stars, this book has some stiff competition and didn't quite live up. This wasn’t for me.

I’ve enjoyed all of this authors previous work so was intrigued to read her first contemporary novel. Something very different from my usual reads. This was the story of two people from very different walks of life, coming together in the saddest of circumstances. It was hard hitting and very emotional, and while I didn’t totally understand a lot of the technical, behind the scenes stuff, it took me on such a journey! Beautifully written, keep tissues close at hand for reading this one!

Dit was het eerste boek dat we lazen in de Harper Collins Boekenclub, en het was meteen een topper!

Jesse is 15 en terminaal ziek. Ze brengt haar dagen door in het ziekenhuis, omringd door haar vrienden en hulpverleners op de afdeling. Wanneer ze een wens mag doen, besluit ze haar leven vast te leggen in een video/game, zodat haar ouders, broertje en vrienden iets moois hebben om naar terug te kijken wanneer zij er niet meer is.
Enter Alex, 29, een video-ontwerper wiens leven leeg en eenzaam aanvoelt. Hij wordt ingeschakeld om Jesse te helpen met haar wens - en voor hij het weet, wordt hij volledig in haar wereld gezogen.

💭 Zoals verwacht was dit een prachtig en emotioneel verhaal. Het was de eerste keer dat ik zo’n soort boek las, maar ik ben zó blij dat ik het gelezen heb. Jesse is een ongelooflijk, bewonderenswaardig sterk meisje: optimistisch, zorgzaam, altijd bezig met het welzijn van haar gezin en vrienden. Het is hartverwarmend om te lezen.

Het verhaal wisselt regelmatig van perspectief midden in een hoofdstuk, wat soms even wennen is, maar het geeft je wel meteen toegang tot de emoties van verschillende personages tijdens belangrijke momenten. De groei die Alex doormaakt is ook bijzonder mooi. Zijn ontmoeting met Jesse verandert en verrijkt zijn leven op een manier die je echt voelt. Hij begint als eenzame man zonder interesses en vrienden, maar hij bloeit echt open dankzij Jesse en hij wordt een warme persoon met mensen rond hem die om hem geven. Heel mooi om te lezen!

Misschien had ik af en toe graag nog wat meer vanuit Jesse’s eigen perspectief gelezen, om haar emoties nog dieper te ervaren. Maar ik vermoed dat de auteur bewust koos om in dit verhaal vooral de gevoelens van haar omgeving te belichten en weer te geven dat zij op verschillende manieren met Jesse en haar gezondheid omgaan. En eerlijk? Dat werkt ook. Dit boek heeft me zoveel laten voelen. Het is realistisch, hartverscheurend en toch hoopvol - een verhaal dat ondanks het droevige onderwerp een prachtige boodschap meegeeft.

Dankjewel HarperCollins voor dit bijzondere verhaal. Ik kijk nu al uit naar het volgende boek van onze boekenclub… maar eerst blijf ik nog even nagenieten van dit verhaal.

I have loved Heather Morris' work whenever I've had a chance to enjoy it. Unlike her other work this is contemporary fiction but still has the true beauty that comes when Heather puts pen to paper.

We follow Jessie and Alex as they work together to make Jessie's dying wish, an interactive video game based on key moments of Jessie's life. We see Alex battle not only his demons from his past but new issues as he navigates becoming close to a terminal child patient. We see the journey of Alex, Jessie, her family and Kelly, Jessie's social worker and the book finishes with the lives of everyone changed by the project.

This was so beautifully written and it touched my heart in the same way Heather's other work has. I am so glad I got to listen to this book and I write this teary eyed but with a heart that is fuller for having experienced it.

Ik wist niet zo goed wat ik moest verwachten van De wens van Heather Morris, maar dit boek heeft me echt geraakt.

Het verhaal volgt Jesse, een 15-jarig meisje dat ziek is en haar dagen vooral doorbrengt met gamen. Ze houdt van haar familie en vrienden, zelfs als het thuis niet altijd makkelijk is. Dan is er Alex, een 29-jarige man die een beetje verloren is en niet goed weet wat hij met zijn leven moet.
Wanneer Jesse hem vraagt om een game te maken over haar leven – iets dat achterblijft als zij er straks niet meer is – begint er iets bijzonders te ontstaan. Hun band groeit op een manier die je niet ziet aankomen, en dat maakt het verhaal alleen maar mooier.

Dit boek brak echt mijn hart, maar op een mooie manier. Het is verdrietig, maar ook warm en hoopvol. Vooral Jesse bleef me bij: zo sterk en positief, ondanks alles. En ook Alex maakt een mooie ontwikkeling door.
De wens laat zien hoe kwetsbaar het leven is, maar ook hoe belangrijk verbinding, liefde en herinneringen zijn. Het boek zet je aan het denken en zorgt ervoor dat je de mensen om je heen misschien net iets meer waardeert.

Een prachtig, aangrijpend verhaal dat nog lang in je hoofd en hart blijft hangen, een emotioneel boek dat ik niet snel zal vergeten. 💔✨

Ken je dat, een boek waarvan je na het eerste hoofdstuk al denkt dat dit weleens een favoriet kan worden. Wel dit is zo’n boek!

Jesse is ongeneeslijk ziek en heeft nog een wens. Via een stichting lijkt ze haar wens in vervulling te kunnen laten gaan. Al loopt dat niet van een leien dakje. Jesse is echter enorm volwassen en wijs voor haar leeftijd. Zelfs als ze het zwaar heeft ziet ze de mensen om haar heen echt en denkt ze steeds aan iedereen om haar heen.

Alex, die haar met de wens gaat helpen heeft zelf een rugzakje mee. Hij heeft zijn jeugd doorgebracht in instellingen en vindt het moeilijk om te zien dat anderen wel liefdevolle gezinnen hebben. Zelfs al is dit getekend door de ziekte van een kind. Door Jesse te helpen met haar wens ontdekt Alex ook dat hij ook van betekenis kan zijn voor de mensen om hem heen. De ziekenhuisomgeving en de ziekte van Jesse raken hem meer dan hij had kunnen denken. Alex maakt echt een groei door doorheen het verhaal.

Ook de ouders en het broertje van Jesse krijgen een rol in het verhaal. Terwijl haar moeder al wat verder in het acceptatieproces staat, is haar vader nog steeds aan het nadenken over manieren waarop ze zou kunnen genezen. Dit maakt ook dat de relatie tussen beide onder spanning staat. En ook al zou je de vader soms eens door elkaar willen schudden, toch kan je niet anders dan meevoelen met hem. Sam, het kleine broertje van Jesse is super schattig en gaat op een redelijk natuurlijke manier met alles om. Hij weet nu eenmaal niet beter dan dat Jesse in en uit het ziekenhuis moet.

Wat een mooi en emotioneel verhaal is dit. Ik had af en toe tranen in mijn ogen tijdens het lezen. De schrijfstijl is zo mooi. Enerzijds krijgt de ziekte en alle frustratie en onmacht die er mee te maken heeft een plaats in dit boek maar anderzijds zijn er ook de mooie momenten, de hoopvolle momenten die mooi in beeld worden gebracht. Soms wordt het misschien wel wat technisch als er veel gepraat wordt over het maken van de wens.

De wens is een mooi en hartverwarmend verhaal. Het kan ook wel enorm hard binnenkomen. Er wordt niet om de moeilijke zaken heen gelopen. Je zal alle emoties voelen voorbijkomen.

Het begin spreekt je aan, je bent benieuwd hoe het verder gaat. Daarna kabbelt het verhaal een beetje voort. Het deel waarin de vader het niet eens is met de wens wordt irritant. Dit komt te vaak terug. Op een gegeven moment weet je het wel. Ik had meer van dit boek verwacht.

I received this book as an ARC from Bonnie’s Books. Having loved all of Heather Morris’ previous books I was absolutely thrilled to have a proof copy of her first contemporary fiction novel.
The story follows 15 year old Jessie who is battling cancer and has chosen a Wish to be fulfilled. This brings in Alex who works for a VR Games company as a designer and is assigned to help fulfil Jessie’s unusual request

The story is one of heartfelt emotion and the wisdom from Jessie is a beautiful testament to the character. She brings such love, joy and inspiration to everyone and truely fills the pages with her breathtaking spirit.

Alex’s character, along with his interactions with the social worker Kelly are less fulfilling. I found their chemistry and personalities hard to latch onto and their struggles seemed to not work as well on the pages as Jessie’s did. This is the only reason I marked the book from a 4 star to a 3.

A tear jerker of a read and beautifully crafted characters in regards to Jessie and also all her family and friends who emote such wonderful life lessons we could all benefit from.

It saddens me to give this a low rating because I've loved Heather Morris' previous novels, which were so rich and moving, especially The Tattooist of Auschwitz. But this one left me flat. The characters are one-dimensional and never develop, the dialogue is stilted and not believable. It's over explained, repetitive and overly sentimental in some parts, and rushed with no detail in others. It's such a shame because the idea was great, and there were glimmers of her usual talent in there, but overall it's like they've accidentally published the rough first draft.

If it had been written by a YA author (Colleen Hoover maybe, if that’s the right name) I would be a 5. But come on Heather. Sappy, lightweight. Not even a tear jerker, since the minimal plot twists are obvious.

Stick to your amazing historical fiction. All of which I’ve read and rated 5.
