Outstanding! This review covers both volumes as it is written as a single piece, split into two volumes so the reader doesn’t have to try to handle an 875 page book. Krick has spent his professional career studying the Battle of Gaines’s Mill and, more importantly, the physical battlefield itself. Unless some new primary source comes to light that changes the historical perspective of this battle, this is and will be the definitive description of the battle. Krick meticulously reconstructs the fight from ground level and presents his narrative with solid critical analysis of the sources and of the actions of the principal characters involved. This book provides the reader with a deep dive into the Battle of Gaines’s Mill and is highly recommended. Enjoy!
