I enjoyed this book as it was a fantasy retelling of David from the Bible and I can tell the author did a good job adding different aspects of David's story from the Bible to this story. I love Davian as I could relate to him and the beginning of the story kept me hooked especially the scene where he fight the giants.
Later on I felt less interested and hooked in the story and it might as been as I don’t care for politics in stories and about more then half way through, the story was about politics and surviving. But as a debut novel, she wrote the story well.
Content Warning: 🤬 there was some language like h*ll and bas**ard 🌶 1/10 no spice
One thing I will mention is that there was one and maybe two scenes of a person being completely undressed but it wasn't descriptive. Just mentioned they took everything off (not related to anything spicy)
I'm trying to find the right words to accurately convey just how much I enjoyed this story, but I can't, so I'll just go with my immediate thoughts and feelings; I LOVED this story!
The MMC, Davian, was such a delight to read and his character growth was well done. Especially because he's still a kid (17,18) and even when he's stepping into the role of being the man he wants to be, he still has moments of fear and doubt; It just seemed so real. Love, love, love his character!
All other side characters were also great! There was a sad scene that I don't know if I'll be able to forgive Mooney for, but I think she's ok with that. I don't know what's awaiting these characters in book two, but I am so excited to read it
This debut novel is a fantasy retelling of the biblical story of David, but I truly believe that this book can appeal to people both familiar and unfamiliar with the details and lesser known parts of the story as him defeating Goliath is just a small part of his story and role in the Bible. In fact, I would liken it to be similar to Lord of the Rings or The Chronicles of Narnia in the sense that there are strong Christian themes that appeal to Christians but also elements of fantasy that appeal to the general public.
This story is told in first person through the eyes of the main male character (MMC) Davian. I enjoy stories told through the eyes, thoughts, and lens of the main character because the reader gets a deeper, more personal account of the inner workings of the character in a way that isn’t conveyed in a third person account. It is also is just fun to read a fantasy told through the eyes of an MMC that’s also written by a woman; something that I haven’t seen much in the books that I have seen or read recently unless told in a dual narrative. The growth and overall character development that Davian experiences throughout the story is something that feels relatable that accurately shows that growth isn’t a straight line.
As someone who was born and raised within the Christian church (and experienced Christianity through different denominations) I recognized some details from the story of David, but I also will admit that I don’t know the full account as written in the Bible. I can see the Christian themes that the author has expertly woven within the story based on my background and that has me curious as to which parts of the story are actually in the Bible and which ones were from the author using creative license to tell a story. The fantasy elements apply more towards the setting/land rather than the addition of mythical species/creatures. The magic represented is also up for personal interpretation whether the reader sees it as being more rooted in fact or fiction.
As far as pacing, this book is split up into three different sections that show the focus of Davian’s journey at different points. The first part felt a little slow to me mainly because there was a lot of character and setting introductions and essentially setting up the story. Knowing what I know about the story of David from the Bible as well as some out of context quotes shared on the author’s social media, I was more interested to get into some more dramatic, gritty parts of the story so some of the slowness could probably be contributed to my excitement of getting further in the story. Things definitely started picking up and by the end of the first part (about 100ish pages) I was fully invested in the story. The ending has me excited to see what will happen in the next book of this duology.
Content wise it is being marketed as a young adult epic fantasy and I feel like this fits well. There is some violence but nothing overly descriptive…in fact there’s no graphic language or content at all so I feel very comfortable recommending this to teens as well as adults.
I definitely recommend this book especially if people prefer more epic or classic style fantasy that isn’t centered around romance. You get a little bit of romance, definitely some political drama (since kings love to start drama and wars), and lots of character development.
This is a wonderful fantasy retelling of David and Goliath that I thoroughly enjoyed! Before I get into more, I would like to preface this with this is not a Christian fantasy retelling. The author is a Christian, and there are definitely biblical themes, but it leans more into the popular fantasy genre. If you're looking for the "man after God's own heart" David, this is not it. I'll admit, I was expecting that sort of David, and that's what I love about the David stories from the Bible, but with that being said, I still greatly enjoyed this book!
The main character is Davian, a shepherd boy who kills a giant, winning the hand of the veiled princess and becoming prince. His home life was hard, and in the palace, he can't trust anyone. There are heavy themes of battling shadows, lies, and the monsters within, and coming to know the Creator, or the Divine as called in the book. Fire powers, prophecies, and epic battles! This book had a lot to offer!
My favorite character was Davian, as reading from his point of view added more depth to him. I'll be honest, I didn't feel like I connected with any of the other characters as deeply as him, but the veiled princess was very intriguing and I grew to like her.
Overall, this is an amazing debut book with loads of action, suspense, and mystery. I look forward to seeing what else the author writes!
Age rating: 15+ Spice: none Language: occasional uses of h*ll and b*st*ard
I seriously didn't want this book to end. It took me a second to get into the story and really understand Davian's character, but once I did, I couldn't peel myself away from this book. The cast of characters is fantastic and there is a found family element that is just great. I could read a whole series of spinoffs based on all the side characters alone. The magic system is interesting and clear, but still leaves a lot of room for more exploration in future books. I'm excited to see how all these aspects are further developed as the series continues.
As I stated before, I struggled with understanding Davian's motives in the first quarter of the book, but after he faced some conflict, I absolutely fell in love with his character. I found him to be really relatable in a lot of ways, and ultimately left this story feeling like I had grown along with him. I would highly, highly recommend The Boy Who Would Be King to anyone who feels plagued by fear and self doubt. This story inspired and emboldened me in a way that few have ever done so before.
Mooney has obviously worked hard on her craft, and I am so looking forward to seeing where The Ivory Throne series goes next!
*I was given an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
This was my first fantasy book in a minute and I devoured it! It was really cool reading a book inspired by a Biblical narrative and characters that breathed new life into it in a way. It is very much done in a way that if you know you know but it’s enjoyable for all!
As a Christian in grad school studying all the Bible things it was really cool to see the biblical parallels and symbolism!
In general as a book I enjoyed the consistent first person point of view. While I do enjoy a dual perspective sometimes I yearn for being along for the ride with the main character and discovering things alongside them. I felt immersed into the world and learning it alongside Davian but not so much so that it was overwhelming as some fantasy books can feel.
I enjoyed the plot and world development in this book and am excited to see relationships grow in the books to come.
I’m excited to see how this world and its characters continue to expand and grow in the remaining books. I can’t wait to see what happens next!! How will Imogen and Davian’s relationship grow? What will happen in the kingdom?!
When I came upon a TikTok reel from Alexa on the content of her book, I thought, "Omg, I need to read this as soon as it becomes available!" I love the story of David in the Bible, and I truly feel like Alexa did a great job of capturing some real-life experiences from David's life and adding the epic fantasy sprinkles we all love in Davian's story.
The story is written in First Person POV, which I will admit is not my favorite. However, I did love being brought into Davian's journey. Throughout the story, I just kept thinking- I know exactly how he feels! And Alexa did a great job of showing us his growth in every act/part of the story.
The writing was very immersive; I could feel myself in Vel Orin, sneaking through the servant halls, even peaking at Davian as he played the harp in the middle of the night. I always love when a writer brings the full picture to life, and you can paint it in your mind.
The biblical themes kept me reading till the very end. I can't wait to read the second book and see how the story develops.
Tropes: David and Goliath Retelling Good vs Evil Chosen One Spiritual Battles & Gifts Romance Subplot
Review:
I know the author says this is a biblically inspired fantasy, not a Christian fantasy but this book perfectly illustrates spiritual warfare and the world we cannot see.
Davian heeds the call to fight the giant, Goliath the Unkillable, making him "Champion. Giant Slayer. Killer of the Unkillable. Prince." but what he doesn't know is the lengths and lessons he must learn and go through to become king like he was promised. I will stop here before I spoil anything more.
I loved the illustrations of those who could see. It gave so much perspective as a believer. We know we are not alone and there are things happening that cannot be seen, but to truly witness it is another thing entirely and it was wonderfully done.
Definitely recommend this book but understand that it deals with heavier topics.
***I have received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own***
“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”” John 8:12 NLT
Embers breaking through the shadows of darkness, the fire of a king emerging.
If you’re looking for an adventure, I recommend this one.
I loved this read, taking a journey through the eyes of Davian as he goes from humble shepherd to the Kings Champion and Prince. The world is vibrant, diverse, and filled with beauty. A sweet romance blooming in the midst of a war of both the seen, and unseen forces of darkness. A young man learning what it truly means to be king.
I loved the “magic” system in this book, though I’m hesitant to call it just that. The fire of the believers, of the anointed, is a refreshing new take on power and I loved the imagery of it, especially in the final battle.
What a debut for a newly emerged indie author! I am so thrilled to have been given the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this YA Christian Fantasy, a retelling of David.
This David and Goliath inspired story took me on an epic journey and I was utterly captivated by each and every moment!
Davian’s character growth from a shepherd on a farm, to a prince in training, to a king and leader of the people of Aryeh, was absolutely breathtaking to witness. Imogen, the princess of Aryeh, was clever, kind, curious, and intelligent. Her and Davian together was absolutely perfection, as they grounded each other and gave each other glimpses of hope. The found family that emerges around Davian as the story unfolded was so heart warming. The magic was unique, the realms of the unseen and seen captivating, and the lore of the world was drenched in divine prophecy, shadows of darkness, connection to nature, and a calming peace brought through the righteous fire within.
And two particular characters who meet towards the end, had me smiling and kicking my feet, cause it felt like they had finally met their match-in a intriguing, curious, and wonderful kind of way.
I absolutely cannot wait to read book 2 of The Ivory Throne Duology, and honestly, I don’t know what I will do with myself till then.

I absolutely needed this book! It combines elements of LOTR, Narnia, and David & Goliath all in one exciting tale.
This story kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Told from Davian’s point of view, it immerses you in the narrative right away. I adored watching Davian evolve from a boy into a young man throughout the story. The magic system is distinctive and carries a subtle Christian influence (Flame vs. Shadows). Davian himself is incredibly relatable, and the side characters really leave a lasting impression as well.
This book radiates epic fantasy vibes. It brought me immense joy, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the tale. I can hardly wait for Book 2 because I desperately need answers! Haha, and I’m eager to see more of Imogen.

*Remember, this is NOT a Christian book, although it is written by a Christian and includes some faith-inspired elements. However, it can be appreciated by everyone.
This book is a riveting retelling of the story of King David. I truly enjoyed how The Boy Who Would Be King transformed the Scriptures into something visually and emotionally stimulating. I would say this book is definitely geared toward younger adult readers but is still enjoyable for a wide range of age groups and reading levels.
The beginning of the book did feel a tad slow to me, but once it picked up, I could not put it down! The mystical and spiritual elements were familiar but also presented in such a way that I had not seen before. The presence of the Divine felt powerful yet gentle, tangible yet beyond understanding. Mooney truly captures these real-life spiritual elements in a way that perfectly adapts them for a fantastical retelling but also keeps the Scripture's message in tact.
This book is perfect for those wanting to see Bible stories in a new light or those that are new to Biblical themes and stories. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!
As a Christian studying theology at university, and a fantasy author, Alex Mooney’s The Boy Who Would Be King was right up my alley. As a debut novel, I was thoroughly impressed by Mooney’s writing, and the ups and downs of the story were a joy to read. One thing I was struck by was Mooney’s ability to draw upon the source material of the biblical story of David, yet not be bound by it. The balance she struck could not have been easy, yet fully worked as an unmistakable retelling of King David, and a wholly unique fantasy epic. The magic system was also very striking visually, as the descriptions of the shadows and the fire as a visual representation of spiritual dynamics worked so well. The theological threads and messages sown throughout the story made this theology student’s heart very happy. Mooney’s faith was evident in the writing, and I cannot wait to see what she comes out with next, whether it be more biblically inspired stories or original creations!
I absolutely loved A Boy Who Would Be King by Alexa Mooney. I’m typically partial to third person POV, but Alexa’s prose and ability to connect with the reader made my reading experience a wonderful one. Beautiful, clear writing aside, the actual story was great. There’s a heavy emphasis on retelling the David and Goliath story, but It was neat seeing how the author pulled inspiration from multiple places in the Bible. As a Christian, it made me giddy to see those biblical stories and elements fictionalized and fantasized. But, if you are not of Christian faith, I still believe you’ll enjoy the book for the wonderful story it is.
There’s highs, lows, love, action and drama. Exactly everything I look for in a fantasy. Though this book can be enjoyed by readers of all ages, I definitely think this book is perfect for teens! I shared this with the ladies in my book club since many of them have teen daughters.
Bravo on your first book Ms. Alexa, this is work you should be very proud of! I look forward to reading more of your work.
Now you don’t have to be familiar with the details to enjoy this book.
I went in without even reading what the books was about and immediately was hooked.
The pacing felt so smooth and I loved that we had the book split into 3 sections. It made it so easy to follow along.
I love Davian (our MMC). I completely appreciated how his character growth wasn’t instantaneous. It took time; naturally. It wasn’t one moment and he was like “ah hah!”. B/c it’s his POV we are along with him and can experience how certain moments help shape who he becomes.
For a debut book I think Alexa did an amazing job and I’m looking forward to book 2!
Favorite Quote: “Those who are faithful with little will be faithful with much.”
This book was so good. Every single page was so entertaining and the writing is phenomenal. I love the way fire and shadow powers were used to represent spiritual darkness and the Holy Spirit. Davian was such a cool character to be able to follow. Obviously, this is a David and Goliath retelling, but Alexa Mooney adds so much emotion, betrayal, and angst to the entire story. The character development in Davian is really well written, and his growth is a really big reason I liked this story. Imogen is also an incredible character. Her subtle strength and confidence makes her such a nice addition to the story. Her and Davian’s romance story is so sweet and I love how they yearn for each other. If you haven’t already, GO GET THIS BOOK! It is so amazing and I am so excited for what Alexa has coming next!
This was a pleasure to read and was a wonderful debut book by Alexa Mooney! There were a few times that I wished the tension had been drawn out more or that the characters had to work a little bit harder to accomplish their tasks, but it was still a fantastic and enjoyable book. I slightly disagree with some of the theological perspectives in the book as it concerns the working of the Holy Spirit, but I can also appreciate that this is a fictional take on the Holy Spirit and I found this view unique and interesting! The nods to the biblical telling of the story of David were cleverly interwoven and I really enjoyed seeing moments that I know from Scripture being played out in this fictional world. Most importantly, I found this book edifying! It inspired me to continue in my walk with Christ even when I’m in the period of waiting. I can’t wait to read the next one!!
This book was AMAZING! It is exactly the kind of classic fantasy I absolutely love! Davian was such a great character with amazing growth throughout the whole book. Honestly, the lessons he learns and the hardships he goes through make him such a strong person and one you want to root for.
The world was well developed, the side characters were easy to remember, the writing style was just right to get sucked into, and the romance was sweet. I would have loved for the romance to be developed a bit more, but considering what happens during the majority of the story, it probably is just right the way it is. Just don't go into this book expecting the romance to be the main driver. This book is about Davian's journey through painful life lessons and becoming the person he's meant to become.
I highly recommend this book and I can't wait to read the sequel!
As a big fan of The House of David I was really excited for another retelling of the story of King David. Not only did this book deliver on my excitement, but it exceeded expectations!! I find in fantasy books pacing can be difficult to master as there is so much to learn about the magic system and realm but also about the character. The tale in The Boy Who Would Be King unfolds so beautifully and perfectly timed that you really get layered sense of each character, but also get to dive deep into the mysteries of the magic. Davian is a character that you want to succeed and it’s so fun to get his POV! Whether you are a fan of King David, fantasy, or genuinely just love a good book I would 1000% recommend giving this one a read!
Such an amazing story, full of intense adventure and riveting plot twists. I read this book as an ARC reader, and I can honestly say as soon as it is published I will be getting a copy. Alexa Mooney has surpassed expectations with this accomplished retelling of the David story. I never wanted it to end. But alas, all good stories come to an end, it’s a good thing this will be a series! I absolutely loved following Davian through his story as he became who he was destined to be, slaying giants and fighting shadows. Meeting new friends and enemies. This book has it all: romance, betrayal, friendship, loss, mystery, and suspense. Such an majestic story. I highly recommend for your next read!
What a fun retelling of David’s story!! I definitely enjoyed this book, and the writer’s style is nice and clear. The romance was probably back stage more than I would have liked, however, that makes it a great recommendation for young adult readers!
A few content things to note—I believe there are only two occurrences of language, and there is a scene with dark ritual practices, along with what felt like a new age type meditation in combat training. None of these would stop me from letting my girls read it someday!
Overall, it’s a wonderful debut full of great characters, intense moments, and a sweet, innocent romance!
This book, ugh!! This is an absolutely incredible retelling of David's story, and I could not recommend it more highly. It's SO engaging, and it's very true to the original story even as it's fictionalized. I fell in love with so many of these characters, and grew deeply invested in this battle between light and dark. And OF COURSE, I absolutely ATE UP our precious, precious love story. I seriously will never stop thinking about this story. Alexa did a beautiful job with this book--especially for a debut!--and you can tell it is just so God-inspired. I'm so grateful I got to read this book and I cannot wait for more from another new must-read author!
It’s so rare to read a book with a romance subplot that’s ACTUALLY a subplot. This story was truly an epic fantasy and I loved so many aspects of it.
The character development was immaculate, the world building was so unique—especially the antagonist. I loved the concept, the characters, and the take on such a well known story! I highlighted sooo many parts! So many strong lines.
I enjoyed so thoroughly this from start to finish! If this isn’t on your TBR…what are you doing?
I absolutely fell in love with the characters in The Boy Who Would Be King by Alexa Mooney. From start to finish, I was completely invested in their journeys and growth. What I loved most was how she reimagined the story of David and Goliath—staying true to the heart and meaning behind it while adding her own unique and compelling twist. It felt both familiar and fresh at the same time. Such a powerful and engaging read!
So proud of our Shepard boy. Love his background and growth into someone powerful who believes in themselves and being a just king. Enjoyed the found family and the development of his relationship with his father & the twins. I have a crush on Kedar hehe 🤭 can’t wait for book 2!
Favorite quote: “And the moment taking a human life doesn’t grieve you is the moment you have lost your soul.”
This book is truly a must-read! Alexa skillfully establishes strong, compelling characters from the very beginning, making them feel authentic and relatable to every reader. The story is engaging and fast-paced—a true page-turner—and serves as a powerful introduction to Alexa Mooney’s remarkable, God-given talent as a writer.
Alexa is so cool! Fantasy isn't my typical read, but I wasn't able to put this book down. The plot was fast paced but with so much to dive into and without a lot of the extra fluff I feel like can be found in most fantasy novels. The hint of biblical references/ fiction in the mix made it a feel good read at the same time. Can't wait for book 2 :)
It was so interesting to read this book! I saw many beautiful simmilarities to the story of David and Goliath, but still so many surprising twists and turns! I love the character of Davian a lot and am so excited to see where his story is going!
I'm so proud of Alexa for writing this book! It was amazing!
A wonderful debut by Alexa! She paints a beautiful picture of this world, of the characters. The protagonist has a real hero’s journey, you cannot help but root for him ! The side characters are fleshed out very well and yet you still want to know more, which makes me so excited for the sequel ! Absolutely brilliant !
Great character development and story telling. I was pleasantly surprised with her creative license with the biblical story. Very entertaining and a hard book to put down! I can’t wait for the second book!
