The Gargoyle's Bargain

Rate this book
Ailith is a trained hunter who rids the world of otherworldly creatures.

When The Black Sanctum dispatched her to Rome, she expects werewolves, banshees, maybe a rogue ghost.

She doesn’t expect the gargoyle perched on the cathedral rooftop.

Malach isn’t a mortal.
He isn’t tame.
And he definitely isn’t on her side.

He hates everything The Black Sanctum stands for... everything Ailith represents.

But something far worse is taking over the city.

A parasite wearing human skin, multiplying in the dark, feeding on the city one body at a time. Malach has been killing them the only way he can, ripping out their corrupted hearts and taking the rot into himself to keep the curse at bay.

A reluctant alliance forms as hunter and monster search for a way to stop the infection before it consumes the world.

Then Ailith discovers the truth.

Her bloodline is the same one that cursed Malach into stone.

And she may be the only one who can save him.

Character Information and Plot Dynamics

Reese Wilder’s The Gargoyle’s Bargain blends dark fantasy, slow-burn romance, and a touch of gothic mystery into a story that feels both atmospheric and emotionally grounded. Set against the hauntingly beautiful backdrop of Rome, the novel introduces two compelling characters whose lives collide under dangerous and deeply personal circumstances.

Ailith is a fascinating heroine. As a sorceress demon raised within the ruthless ranks of the Black Sanctum, she has been trained to see the world in absolutes. Supernatural beings are threats, and threats are meant to be eliminated. Her upbringing alongside her equally deadly family has hardened her, but there is a quiet undercurrent of curiosity and doubt within her that begins to surface as the story unfolds. Sent to Rome to investigate a string of brutal human deaths, she arrives ready to hunt and kill whatever monster is responsible.

Malach, on the other hand, is a tragic and deeply sympathetic figure. Cursed centuries ago, to exist as a gargoyle bound to the city, he lives a half-life. By day, he is nothing more than stone, frozen in place and unable to act. By night, he regains his freedom, though it is limited to the boundaries of Rome. Wilder does an excellent job of conveying the loneliness and frustration of his existence, as well as the quiet resilience that has kept him going for so long.

Their first meeting is charged with tension. Ailith immediately assumes Malach is the killer she’s been sent to destroy, and given her training, she doesn’t hesitate to act on that belief. What follows is a gradual unraveling of truth. The real threat is not Malach, but a parasitic entity preying on humans, something far more insidious and difficult to track. As Ailith begins to see the situation more clearly, she is forced to confront not only the truth about the case, but the rigid beliefs she has always lived by.

One of the most compelling aspects of the story is the revelation that Ailith’s family is responsible for Malach’s curse. This adds a deeply personal layer to their relationship, transforming it from simple distrust into something much more complex. Malach’s anger and pain are entirely justified, while Ailith is left grappling with guilt over something she had no part in, yet cannot fully separate herself from. Their dynamic evolves slowly, shaped by reluctant cooperation, sharp dialogue, and a growing understanding that neither of them is what the other expected.

The setting of Rome plays a strong supporting role throughout the novel. The ancient architecture, shadowed alleyways, and historic weight of the city mirror Malach’s own long, burdened existence. It also creates a rich, immersive atmosphere that enhances both the mystery and the romance elements of the story.

Highlights:
• A unique and emotionally rich premise centered on a cursed gargoyle and a morally conflicted hunter
• Strong character development, particularly in Ailith’s internal struggle and Malach’s quiet resilience
• A layered relationship that balances tension, guilt, and reluctant trust
• An engaging supernatural mystery that unfolds at a steady, satisfying pace
• A vivid setting that adds depth and mood to the story

Limitations:
• The pacing may feel a bit slow for readers looking for constant action, especially in the middle sections
• Some elements of the Black Sanctum and its operations could have been explored in greater detail
• The parasite threat, while intriguing, occasionally takes a backseat to the character dynamics
• I don’t understand why Ailith and her brothers haven’t questioned the Black sanctum more, since they are hunters and assassins who kill supernatural beings and they, themselves are supernatural.

Final Thoughts

The Gargoyle’s Bargain is a character-driven fantasy that leans heavily into atmosphere and emotional complexity. Reese Wilder crafts a story that is as much about confronting inherited beliefs and past sins as it is about solving a supernatural mystery. The connection between Ailith and Malach feels earned, shaped by conflict, revelation, and a shared fight against something far darker than either of them expected.

If you enjoy stories with morally gray characters, hot and spicy romance, and a gothic edge, this one is well worth picking up.

Review of The Gargoyle’s Bargain by Reese Wilder

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

The Gargoyle’s Bargain by Reese Wilder is one of those books that completely pulls you in and refuses to let go. From the characters to the pacing, everything worked together to create a story that was incredibly hard to put down.

At the center of the story is Ailith, a main female character who truly stands out. She’s strong, capable, and unapologetically herself—a complete badass—but what makes her even more compelling is the way she guards her emotions. There’s a depth to her that goes beyond strength alone, and watching her navigate her world while keeping parts of herself hidden added a lot of weight to her character. Her sass, her resilience, and the way she holds her own in every situation made her a joy to read.

One of my favorite aspects of the book was her relationship with her adopted brothers. The bond between them felt genuine and grounded. Their banter brought moments of lightness to the story, but more importantly, their loyalty and support for one another added an emotional core that made those relationships feel real and meaningful.

Then there’s Malach—and yes, he absolutely earns the title of book boyfriend. His grumpy, guarded nature paired with his clear internal struggle made him incredibly engaging. The way he tries to keep his distance from Ailith, only to continuously fail, was written so well that it never felt forced. His backstory adds another layer to his character, giving depth to his actions and making his presence in the story even more compelling.

The writing itself is smooth and immersive. This is the kind of book where the pages seem to turn themselves—you just want to keep going. If real life didn’t get in the way, this is easily a one-sitting read. The pacing keeps things moving without feeling rushed, and the balance between action, character moments, and tension is well handled.

I also appreciated that while Ailith is undeniably strong, she still feels human. She isn’t just defined by her strength—she has emotions, vulnerabilities, and complexities that make her relatable and grounded. It’s always refreshing to see a female lead written with that kind of balance.

There are also some well-placed spicy moments throughout the book that add to the chemistry without overwhelming the story. Combined with the twists and turns, it creates a narrative that keeps you fully engaged. There were definitely moments where I went from being curious about what would happen next to genuinely needing to know.

I had the opportunity to read this as an ARC, and I’m truly grateful for that experience. It’s always exciting to discover a story like this early, especially one that leaves such a strong impression.

The book does end on something of a cliffhanger, which only adds to the anticipation. It left me wanting more in the best way possible, and I’m really hoping that a second book is in the works because I am absolutely ready to continue this journey.

Overall, The Gargoyle’s Bargain is a captivating read with strong characters, engaging writing, and just the right amount of tension, emotion, and spice. It’s a solid 5-star read for me, and one I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys character-driven fantasy with depth and chemistry

This was a cute darker retelling of beauty and the beast with a little bit of enemies to lovers sassy strong FMC and grumpy protective loving MMC. I thought the story itself was good I felt like it did move really fast but all and all I enjoyed the read. We get some secret society that comes along with secrets and lies as always. We get some found family which I love.

I dove into The Gargoyle’s Bargain with an open mind, and let me tell you, it feels more like a paranormal romance than a monster romance, which is right up my alley! I’m a sucker for a good paranormal story give me ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and magic, and I’m hooked!

Reese Wilder captures attention from the very first page with a unique blend of magic and character depth that redefines what I thought about gargoyles. The story follows Ailith, our fierce female protagonist and a trained hunter for the Black Sanctum a secret society dedicated to investigating the otherworldly creatures that inhabit our world.

Adopted at three, and never truly knew who she was or where she came from, Ailith grapples with her past as she travels to Rome to confront some eerie happenings. Enter Malach, the grumpy gargoyle whose dark demeanor initially makes him seem like a classic monster. As Ailith relentlessly pursues him with her questions, we discover that he has a depth that surprises even him. Their journey is not just about battling a nasty parasite infecting the citizens of Rome; it’s also a quest for understanding their intertwined pasts.

The character development was exceptional, and the narrative held me captive throughout. If you’re looking for a story that challenges the norms of paranormal romances while providing rich lore and emotional depth, this one is a must-read!

This was a really good book!!! Getting to ARC read this was so cool and I can’t wait for it to be released!!

Ailith is a trained hunter who rids the world of otherworldly creatures. She is dispatched to Rome by The Black Sanctum, the secret society she is employed by as a hand, an executioner.

Malach isn’t a mortal. He isn’t tame. And he definitely isn’t on her side. He hates everything The Black Sanctum stands for, everything Ailith stands for. A reluctant partnership is formed as they both hunt for a way to rid the parasite before it’s too late for the world. They discover Ailith’s bloodline is the same one that cursed Malach into his gargoyle form but can she save him?

This was a fun, sexy, suspenseful read!! Great writing, great story and likable characters! Definitely keep your eyes out for this book when it comes out!

The Gargoyle’s Bargain is a gothic monster romance that completely pulled me in from the first page.

The pacing is tight, the banter is sharp, and the spice? Let’s just say it lingers in the best way. I was hooked.

Ailith is the kind of FMC you instantly root for. She's independent, capable, and unapologetically strong without losing her depth. And Malach… listen. If lusting after a broody, stone-skinned protector is wrong, I don’t want to be right. He’s intense, protective, and somehow manages to be both intimidating and incredibly lovable.

I absolutely devoured this. It’s fun, action-packed, and hits that perfect balance between dark atmosphere and addictive romance.

Can't wait for the next book!

This was my first book by Seniorta Reese Wilder… and my first gargoyle love story… and WOW… what a RIDE.

From the very beginning, the story pulls you in and refuses to let go. The MMC is gruff, a little temperamental, and definitely not the easiest character to love at first—but somehow he sneaks under your skin anyway. Before you know it, you’re completely rooting for him. The FMC is the perfect balance to him: relatable, fiercely intelligent, and strong in a way that feels real rather than overdone.

Then the CHOAS begins.

A wildly dysfunctional family. A moral dilemma that keeps you questioning every choice the characters make. A nasty little virus stirring up even more trouble. And twist after twist that keeps the tension climbing just when you think you know where the story is headed.

What you end up with is a story that’s dramatic, addictive, and ridiculously easy to get lost in for a few hours. I flew through this book and enjoyed every minute of the ride.

If you want a paranormal romance packed with tension, complicated characters, and enough twists to keep you guessing, this one is absolutely worth picking up.

This dark paranormal Beauty and the Beast retelling completely blew me away! As someone obsessed with the original, I was eager to see how Ailith's story would unfold, and it exceeded all expectations. Ailith is a trained hunter who rids the world of otherworldly creatures. When The Black Sanctum dispatches her to Rome, she encounters Malach, a gargoyle with a dark past. Their reluctant alliance is captivating as they search for a way to stop a parasite wearing human skin, multiplying in the dark, feeding on the city one body at a time.
Watching Ailith and Malach's relationship unfold was truly breathtaking. The banter was top tier. And the smut was smutting. There is a spicy scene that will forever live rent free in my head. I adore these characters.
The characters are so well-developed, and the plot had some serious twists and turns! I was on the edge of my seat with all the heartbreak and betrayal that kept me guessing. I especially adored Ash's character, one of Ailith's siblings.
Their relationship was so heartwarming and felt like such a strong bond throughout the story.
The author did an amazing job of balancing the sweet moments with the more intense ones, making for a truly captivating read. Discovering that Ailith's bloodline is the same one that cursed Malach into stone adds an incredible layer of depth. If you're a fan of Beauty and the Beast or just love a good fantasy with depth and emotion, you absolutely need to read this book. It's a 5-star read that will stay with you long after you finish the last page!

Refreshing Gargoyle Romance

Aelith is a reluctanthunter of supernaturals . She's great at her job in the killing sense but she wonders if all her targets are all evil . She is sent to Rome on a mission and she is being followed by a creature she should eliminate according to her secret missions protocol but she is curious. A Gargoyle Malech has been cursed to turn to stone on top of a Cathedral by day and protect his city at night. He finds Aeileth annoying and gorgeous and notices things about her that bring him back to his past 30 years ago . The links between them become more and intertwined as they get to know each other and a comon goal to figure out what is infecting his city . The Black scanctum who sent her on a mission there has made their two worlds collide and secrets and lots of magic unfold . Loved the progression of this story it does have good spice burried family secrets and hidden magic and curses and supernatural beings as well. Definately worth the read ... my First read from Reese Wilder and not my last xoxo

I have no idea where to begin. All I can say was I was hooked right from the start. I have not read a monster romance in a while, and I could honestly say that this lived up to the hype.

Ailith is our FMC and she’s a hunter in a secret society that hunts paranormal creatures. She has always felt that she is different than her other family members but is unable to put her finger on why. She's sent to Rome on an assignment where she meets Malach, the grumpy gargoyle. Instantly the undeniable tension and attraction sparks and unspoken secrets start to reveal themselves as they work together with a common goal.

The ending had me completely in utter shock and I was so sad!! I cannot wait to read the next book because I have SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!

Thank you Reese for letting me read your amazing book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

GIRLLLL… GIRRLLL! (And gents!)
Gargoyles already pulled me in! And then a spunky fighting silver head girl even more reeled me in. This book was truly amazing. Ailith is a trained hunter (extremely awesome) who is supposed to eliminate supernatural creatures but it all changes when she’s meets a particularly special gargoyle. Everything she’s believed her whole life, starts to unravel and become more complicated.
I was kept wondering the WHOLE time and I never lost interest! The detail in story telling, the characters emotional development, the dark and twisted romance, all of it is such an addictive energy for this read!

I really enjoyed the gargoyles take in this story. The cursed hunter and not just big scary statue. You follow ailith who is a hunter of creatures, even though unlike her adoptive family she does not believe they all should die. She is given a job in Rome when she comes across malach who she bonds with. During all this they come to realize they are connected in more ways then one. I read this in one sitting. The story pulls you in and makes you question the sanctum just like the charecters do. After that ending I really hope their is a sequel

Gargoyles are it!!

So this has been in my feed for a little while. And something about Gargoyles just draws me in. This is Malach our MMC who has been cursed to a cathedral in Rome and Ailith our otherworldly hunter who has secrets she doesn't even know she has. This is a quick read but will drag you into the story immediately. This is a new to me author and I was highly impressed. This is magic, vampires, werewolves, banshees and other mythical creatures. This is an age gap, grumpy stone, magical read. This spice is 3.0. Highly recommend!

This book was SO cute. You’ve got a strong, sassy FMC and a fiercely protective MMC (who just so happens to be a gargoyle 👀). There’s a touch of enemies-to-lovers, but don’t expect it to last long. Add in secret societies, betrayal, and emotions I was not prepared for… and yeah, I was hooked. Such a great read.

Gargoyles and Sorcerers!

This book was an interesting read. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and the different magical elements. I was left with more questions than answers for some of the characters but based on the ending I am hoping that more books are to come. I need to know will the curse be broken? What will happen with Ash? Is this true love?

That said overall good book!

What an amazing ride. This dark retelling of Beauty and the Beast was perfect. Our FMC is sassy and stronger than she believes she is. Our MMC is gruff, scary, and grumpy AF lol. The chemistry between them is sizzling. The spice is there and then some. Oh and the banter. I look a book with great banter and this story did not disappoint. The story follows Ailith who is a hunter of other worldly creatures. She always feels off from the others in her family and doesn’t like to hunt. She is sent to Rome to hunt and meets our MMC and they reluctantly team up to fight an army of creatures. This story had me hooked from page one until the end. It is such a great read. I highly recommend this book.

This book was such a fun, fast-paced ride and honestly the perfect slump buster.

The writing style is quick and engaging with strong worldbuilding that never feels heavy or overwhelming. It somehow manages to feel both familiar and fresh at the same time, like a blend of Gargoyles, Beauty and the Beast, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but with its own dark, gothic edge.

The Rome setting added so much to the atmosphere. It gave everything this rich, gothic vibe that really enhanced the magic and tension of the story.

Malach is the definition of a walking contradiction in the best way. He hates everything Ailith stands for, but the second she’s in danger it’s absolutely “touch her and die.” And when it comes to her? Completely soft. Obsessed. Gone.

Ailith is just as compelling. She’s a strong, capable hunter, but what makes her stand out is her empathy. She feels the weight of what she does, and that emotional depth adds so much to her character.

Their chemistry hits fast, definitely leaning into that insta-love/forbidden romance territory but it works. The tension, the banter (chef’s kiss), and the emotional pull make it easy to buy into. And once the romance gets going… it’s hot.

The plot felt balanced with the romance, and the pacing stayed solid throughout. There were a few twists I genuinely didn’t see coming, which kept things interesting, and the story wraps up in a satisfying way while still leaving room to explore more in this world (and I absolutely would come back for side characters 👀).

This is the kind of book you fly through, have a great time with, and immediately recommend to your friends.

Huge shoutout to the author for trusting me with an early read! I've been a fan since I discovered her during a reading slump, and once again, she delivers exactly what I want: emotionally intense, fast-paced, slightly addictive romance with morally complex characters.

If you love:

monster romance
enemies to reluctant allies
forbidden/“we shouldn’t want each other” vibes
broody, devoted MMCs
strong but empathetic FMCs
banter + tension + spice

…this is absolutely worth picking up.

The Gargoyle’s Bargain – Reese Wilder

First, thank you so much to Reese for trusting me with an ARC of The Gargoyle’s Bargain. I truly appreciate the opportunity to read and review this story.

I highly, highly enjoyed this one. I love a good paranormal romance ghosts, monsters, vampires, gargoyles—give me all of it, and this one definitely hit the spot. The story was very easy to follow and the world-building felt approachable and clear, which made it a fun and quick read.

The book follows Ailith, who works for the secret society known as the Black Sanctum, a group responsible for hunting down mythical creatures. When mysterious deaths begin occurring in Rome, Ailith is sent on a mission to uncover what is happening. Along the way she collides with Malach, our gargoyle MMC, who is also trying to solve the mystery behind the deaths.

From there we get a very intriguing dynamic between the two of them as they navigate this mission together. They begin somewhat at odds but gradually become partners in trying to uncover the truth. I really enjoyed the tension between them and watching their relationship slowly develop while they worked through the mystery.

This story blends paranormal romance, mystery, secret societies, politics, and supernatural intrigue, which kept things engaging throughout the book. The plot was easy to follow while still maintaining enough suspense to keep me curious about what was going on.

Overall, this was a really fun paranormal romance and an enjoyable read. If you love gargoyle MMCs, secret societies, supernatural mysteries, and romance with tension, this is definitely one to check out.

I don't know where to start other than to say, I loved this book! I was instantly drawn in by the cover art, I'm not going to lie. It also gave me a little bit of nostalgia growing up watching the cartoon "Gargoyle's" when I was a kid.
The FMC, Ailith is a hunter in a secret society that hunts paranormal creatures. She is strong, sassy and good at what she does. However, she has always felt that she is different than her other family members but is unable to put her finger on why. She's sent to Rome on an assignment where she meets Malach, the grumpy gargoyle. Instantly the undeniable tension and attraction sparks and we are taken on a roller coater ride of an adventure. Ailith and Malach find they have a common goal to eliminate the threat that has taken root in Rome. They must learn to work together and form a trust to complete the task, all while trying to fight or accept the attraction they have for each other.
The tension builds right along with the action. Then ending had me tearing up and then picking my jaw up off the floor. I am definitely looking forward to the next book(s)!

I had the amazing privilege to read this as an ARC. Thank you to the author Reese Wilder for the opportunity!

I had an opportunity to read The Gargoyles Bargain by Reese Wilder and let me tell you it's AMAZING! The story sucked me into a magical world. I have not had Gargoyle book boyfriend until Malach!! Ailith is a badass FMC. Shes smart, sassy, and can take care of herself. She is adopted into paranormal hunting family.

She gets a mission in Rome where she meets Malach. Her first meeting with a gargoyle doesn't go how she expects it. They have to work together and figure out what's happening to people and find out what's infecting them and while he is also battling his own curse. They find out Ailith's bloodline is connected to the curse.

I LOVE how her brother Ash dropped everything to come help his sister. You know he is an AMAZING brother when he TRUSTED Alilith completely when he didn't judge her for working with Malach. So many twists I didn't see coming. The chemistry between the characters fit perfectly! The spice is there! I could not put it down I loved this book! So if you're looking for a good book this one is it!! I will be reading everything by this author now!

Gargoyle? say no more. Picked up this book so fast after I saw several friends review it on TT.

This was such an addictive read, I flew through it in no time and enjoyed the entire experience. If you’re into paranormal romance with high tension, complex characters, and plenty of unexpected turns, it’s absolutely worth picking up.

The story throws you straight into chaos, a dysfunctional family, a moral dilemma that keeps you second guessing every choice, and a dangerous virus that only makes things worse. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on where it’s going, another twist shifts everything.

At the center of it all are two characters who really balance each other. The FMC is sharp, relatable, and quietly strong, while the MMC starts off gruff, moody, and hard to warm up to, but slowly pulls you in until you’re fully invested in him.

It’s dramatic, fast paced, and so easy to get lost in from beginning to end.

I received this book as a beta read from a good friend of mine. This was my first monster romance in a long time, if not ever, so I was curious to say the least. It completely shocked me and took me by storm. I devoured it in just two sittings.
The strong direction and emotional depth, paired with plenty of spice and a compelling plot, created the perfect balance of tension and heat. The stubborn banter between a cold, brooding male and a fiery, bratty female was absolutely chef’s kiss.
As a beta reader, I suggested a few small tweaks, which were thoughtfully addressed, but overall I loved every second of the experience. Watching the plot unfold was such a thrill, and I already cannot wait to dive into book two.
