Dan Gerstein's new - as in two weeks old - novel of future conflict, 𝘞𝘢𝘳 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺. Set at the crossroads of AI, biotech, and the Internet of Things, the book follows a "transhuman platoon" from the 82nd Airborne Division, U.S. Army holding a defensive perimeter near the Latvian city of Riga along the border with Russia in 2040. AI has achieved decision-making ability beyond human capability (or capacity), biotech is producing digitally-enhanced super soldiers, and man-machine teaming has evolved beyond our imagination.
But.
There's always a but. The forward most squad leader act on their own and cross the border without orders or permission. When those machines start to act on their own initiative, who bears responsibility? When those super soldiers begin to see themselves as a separate and distinct breed of man - think a cross between the Borg and Khan Noonien Singh's augments of 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘬 lore - what happens to human identity, loyalty to their fellow man, and basic control?
It's a great read, perfect for one of those days when your Amazon Echo is approaching sentience and plotting your demise. You know, the kind of thing that's probably already happening but we pretend it's not.
But.
