Deadly Mistakes #3

A Present Mistake

Rate this book
Liam
This was never supposed to happen.

My desire to rid the world of these vile people who make others suffer was never supposed to bleed into my personal life, but here I am… sorting out the pieces to keep my two lives separate.

Of course, Gabriel is the good that keeps me balanced. He makes me laugh, he makes me happy, and he makes me feel emotions I never thought were possible. But when a body is found at the zoo, unveiling a string of murders that go back years, we’re both pulled in… and we soon realize that we’re not the only ones working in the shadows.

Gabriel
Liam’s pleased that I’ve caved and moved myself and my beloved cat into his spacious house after mere weeks of dating. I just need to watch out, or he’ll be proposing to me the next chance he gets. Life with him is amazing, whether we’re epically failing at packing (where did that silicone toy come from?) or he’s insisting that Matthew isn’t his bestie (he is).

But our newest case leads us to a crossroads where we have to decide whether we should do things the proper way or Liam’s way. And I have to admit that the line of what is right and wrong is beginning to blur as a serial killer draws us into his web. He just doesn’t realize that he’s not the only hunter spinning it.

Yay! The next Liam and Gabriel book. I've been stalking this. Bring it on.

Serial manipulator vs serial killer makes for an interesting overarching storyline.
Much stronger murder/mystery plot than book #2.
Liam's getting some... not-enemies in his coworker cohort - friends is not a word he likes.
I'm more of a dog person but Gabriel and Liam's kitties, Lucy Fur (sticking with Liam's name for Lucille Pawl) and Butter, were little scene stealers.
Cousin Tom. Pfft. Snort. Loved it. Liam, you rule.
Gabriel's mother is awesome, as is his sister. I really like his random and loving family.
There's more about secondary characters, like Matthew and Jesse, who I am pretty sure are working their way toward a book. However, I'm only interested in Liam and Gabriel. I like the secondary characters but, personally, I don't want them as MCs. It's Liam and Gabriel I'm here for. Love. Them.
I'm off to listen to the audiobook, it's out now, because I heard Greg Boudreaux voicing Liam and Gabriel in my head the entire time I read the book.

Always a fun time with an Alice Winters book! The audio of this had me laughing my butt off! Not to mention gasping out loud at so many OMG moments! I did not see where this story was going and then all of a sudden we are hit with a huge shock. I even ended up texting my book friends who read it because I couldn't believe what was happening!

Love that Liam is still obsessed over making Gabriel happy. He truly is a devoted man and I am certain Gabriel won't be protesting marriage for much longer, regardless of the fact they haven't been together super long. I also loved some of the interactions between Liam and the cats. It warmed my heart in a weird way I guess you could say.

We get a lot of Matthews and Jesse in the book. I have to say I love Greg Boudreaux's voice for Matthews. When Matthews is being all sulky I just can't help but laugh at it because I swear he sounds just like my kids do pouting. Alice definitely needs to write a book about these two next because I feel like we have been teased enough.

How is it that I keep crying my eyes out for Liam?! I think he might actually be my favourite Alice character (Lake could always make a comeback if he gets another book....)

I love how this series balances humour, grief, seriousness, and absurdity. Liam and Gabriel are so funny together and I love how they're equally obsessed with each other. Liam's reactions to any and all social events always have me cackling because he's like my soul twin on that matter!

The crime was interesting, and even if I can never keep up with where Alice is taking the plot, or with Liam's genius, I was engaged the whole time and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next.

Jesse and Matthew need to happen.

I also dare anyone not to cry when Liam takes Butter with him, but returns him after the diner scene with Gabriel.... full on ugly cried at that part!!!

Can't wait to see what's in store for these guys next - I need Liam's obviously subtle, low-key proposal and wedding planning!!!

Entertaining but fairly predictable and the whole "I can't be with you because everyone I love gets hurt" thing was way too much. Still had a good time though

Unfortunately this one wasn’t great for me. I did enjoy the mystery but was very underwhelmed with the lack of actual connection between Gabriel and Liam. I really missed the romance aspect of their relationship. I felt so disconnected from the 2 intimate scenes. The first one was too goofy and the last didn’t even feel like their characters. Additionally the first part of the book with the team building went on way too long and added nothing. I will continue this series but I wish we would’ve gotten a bit of actual relationship building and progression. This was basically a reiteration of their devotion to each other - ok, and?

📘5 stars | 17th Apr 2026. i was just listening like a love sick puppy, really. Liam & Gabe are one of my fav couples and they go through hell and back in this. It showed so much character growth for both of them here. The beginning is hilarious as always. It was utter chaos, but the good kind! And it foreshadowed the story as per. But then again i’m heavily biased so what do i know? And this had pretty high stakes as there’s a frozen pond involved. Tropes & tags at the end.

🔹Story- 4.8⭐, Characters- 5⭐, Sex- 0.5⭐, Epilogue- n/a HFN⭐

✦Narrated by Greg Boudreaux. My man, do i love you so much for making Liam’s voice like that.

Liam’s competency continues here too and he just notices & deduces things precisely. He reminds me so much of Feluda by Satyajit Ray if… Felu Mittir was also a serial killer… 💀

✦This book focused more on Liam’s devotion for his man. From the very start, he does his usual “Gabe can do no wrong”. But then at every instance, the amount of compliments and rigorous assurances he does mentally saying how much he loves Gabe. Truly, this guy is gone for him and is beyond recovery.
I just love him and want to cherish him and make sure nothing ever happens to him.
Because he’s mine.
He’ll always be mine.

✦Apart from this, it’s those minor, silent care taking that he does, that really does me in. Like when Gabe was feeling cold, he just knew that and the instant they were in his car, he blasted the heat on and Gabe’s hand was cold, so he heated it up (between his thighs). He even tries to help him brush his teeth, and dress him up! He even did some fun stuff with the cats to make Gabe’s Christmas! 😭

✦We… we actually have Gabe participating in the stuff now..? Granted it’s to save someone else and not actually doing the stabby mcstab part but still.. WOW. And he pulls some revenge stuff on his childhood bully too. He has been corrupted & i love it!! 😃

✦And while i think Gabe still has problems with Liam “killing” people and his justification still seems a bit off. He has accepted things. He’s even called Liam as his “one true love” on more than 1 occasion. See, he got into my head. Like Liam, i got too invested in this guy. And then there’s this gem:
“Why does it insist on touching me?” he asks.
“Because he loves you.”
“That’s questionable,” he declares as he sets his food container on top of Butter, like the cat is now his table.
I grin at him. “It’s really not.” I lean over and kiss his cheek. “You’re quite easy to love.”
“I… Gabriel, my love, the light of my life… I often agree with everything you have to say… but not that.”
“Well, you were for me.”
“Sounds suspicious and concerning.”
I laugh. “It was neither!”
Liam raises a brow. “I have deduced that it was both.”

✦We see something blooming b/w Matthew and Jessie and Liam playing cupid for them. But i loved their dynamics. They love to pull e/o’s leg or as Liam calls it “bullying.” Esp Matthew & Liam are fire as buddies. Liam loves causing chaos but i have a feeling Matthew got to him.

✦And the book ends on Gabe’s devotion for his man. Liam is an idiot. But holy shit does Gabe pull through. The way he pulls Liam out of his sacrificial stupidity and the things he says are just awesome. That’s all i can say. Just awesome. Go read it yourself, you'll love it, i promise. :)

❗i rate sex different from sex acts and all my reviews reflect that. The views are my personal and may not align with yours. Only read if you’re ok with that. Else, please skip this next part.
♦️There’s only 1 sex scene. At 42%. It’s certainly creative, i’d give it that! But, it was a letdown, it’s just descriptions with no reactions. Just Liam narrating stuff and saying “i love him” on repeat. This makes it impossible to gauge the actual intimacy during the act, i’ve said this many times. It’s always a hit or miss, i tell you. Oh and 1 sex act at the very end. Absolutely devastated there was no makeup sex. :(

♦️We have a Jessie pov as a flashback to when he was very young, at 16 where he was already being used by married men and women. But this guy “saves” him. But apart from that it’s uh… it’s bad. Dunno if he’ll get a book or not, but yeah, i feel so sorry for him.

♦️At 80% there’s some very heavy angst followed by breakup/separation. Like i said, this is a high stakes one. i genuinely wondered if this would end up in cliffhanger cuz i didn’t know how they’d make it up. They do, ofc. But just, be aware, there’s bad stuff.

📘Tropes & tags: •Established couple, •serial killer MC, •detectives, •helps him brush teeth, •dress him up, •wear his clothes, •Christmas themed, •found family, •devoted MCs, •separation/breakup, •high stakes, •high angst, •strict roles Liam /t, •majority 1st person dual pov (except some pov from Jesse), •HFN.

A Present Mistake is another murder/mystery for Gabriel and Liam. Liam has Gabriel all but moved in with him, along with their cats Lucille Paw (Lucy-fur) and Butters (Margarine). They are called to a crime that involves a zoo, a head, and some hyenas and things spiral from there. Something is going on with the medical examiner, Jamie, and there might be a serial killer out there! Liam gets excited, another fingerprint for his collection. Gabriel just wants everyone safe.

Loved this! Love these characters! Liam is hilarious and the scene with the photo shoot (IYKYK) is fantastic and had me in tears! Gabriel is so sweet but is clearly the boss in this relationship. I love that he has Liam, so clearly, wrapped around his finger.

Why did I wait this long to read this one? I knew I was going go love it! And I absolutely did. I've read this one in ONE day. Couldn't put it down. It's now way too late but I needed to finish.
The first chapter I was laughing my ass of already and I just love Liam and Gabriel and all the people Liam is blackmailing. The story was fastpaced and I didn't forsee the twists and turns. Another great one is this series. Please, another?

Whenever I'm in need of a laugh, I can always count on Alice Winters. Her sense of humor, the snark, the sarcasm in her books....it just works for me. I enjoy the bit of mystery, crime-solving in this, trying to figure out what's going on. It was a fun read, as always. Liam is a complicated man, so funny and playful but so....incredibly broken in some ways. Gabriel is good for him and he better remember that!

4.5 stars

A Present Mistake is the third book in Alice Winters’ Deadly Mistakes series and I loved this latest installment. I am a big fan of Winters’ writing and enjoy so many of her books, but this series is among my favorites. I find it fits that sweet spot between mystery and humor for me, and I particularly love Liam’s cleverness and intelligence. I always enjoy reading about smart characters and I find it so interesting to follow along with how Liam’s mind works.

I really like the dynamic between these men and here we see them nicely settled into their relationship. They are both growing and changing as they build the connection between them. I enjoy the playfulness between them and I just find them such an interesting couple.

I really was not expecting to feel this much pain. It was excruciating, I wanted to cry, I felt powerless. Liam, how dared you do this to me? I have not forgiven him yet, but I will because honestly, no matter his darkness or how many bad people he's killed, he is just such an amazing character, very nuanced, flawed, hilarious and so so generous. He does not do things in halves. He goes all in, he loves so much, he shapes his life around that love and if that gets threatened in any way, his life loses shape and he flounders. But maybe having love with a risk is much better than not having it at all, right? Loved ones might be a weakness in their line of work, but they're also strength, a support group, someone to get you out of your deepest darkness and brighten your life with their smile.
The murder mystery of this book was so intriguing and sort of scary; Liam's well constructed hidden life was at risk of being exposed by helping the people he allowed to become part of his inner circle. Too many people were involved and it scared me, I pictured the fragile balance of their lives crumble. But Liam is smart and he can outsmart the best of them, and there's no one better than him at playing the manipulation game and get you to reveal your cards when he expects you to.
I just truly love how Liam's mind works, and I love how Gabriel is the support and equilibrium he needs. They complement each other perfectly. I'm very curious to know what else is in the cards for them, but I also want to keep them safe!

Wow, wow, wow.
And I mean WOW.
I'd love to see Alice's notes/outline/drafts of this book, because wow.
Have I said wow enough?
This might just be the most twisty-turny book she's written yet. I almost had to have my own notes to keep track of who/what/where/when! Because holy moly, this book was intense. And it may have been just a little too intense for me at times, honestly. And sad, too, quite frankly.

I love Liam and Gabriel. I've really enjoyed "watching" them solve crimes, getting caught up in the mystery of the whodunit, and especially seeing their relationship progress.
A Present Mistake was a fantastic addition to their story. I liked seeing how the team worked together on this one, even if there were times I wasn't sure what to expect. This book was the definition of being kept on your toes.

As with most of Ms. Winters books, I never know if this is the last we'll see of the couple, or if she has plans for more. Honestly, if this is where it was to end for Gabriel and Liam, I'd be quite content. I would love to see more of them, of course, and of certain other characters- here's hoping they might be getting their own story in the not-so-distant future!

Buckle up friends, you're in for one heck of a ride!

oh. my. god.
i am so obsessed with this series i have re-read the first two books and listened to their audiobooks probably more than 50 times. this series has genuinely put me in a reading slump i cannot get over them. i really hope we get more than just 1 short story because i genuinely am unhealthily obsessed with this series. it is so good a little unserious but with enough mystery to hook me till the very end. i find myself craving their intimate and romantic moments so much, it's just so meaningful. and oof i was not expecting to cry in this book but i admit i did shed a few tears. i genuinely love these 2 so much i wrote an ao3 fanfic (NOT AN HEA AND MAJOR SPOILERS LOOK AT THE NOTES) https://archiveofourown.org/works/827...
i hope this series continues on with as many books as the hitman series and im looking forward to maybe a scene in which they get married? 🫣
this is the first review i've written of this series but i think i might write for the 2 other books as well because more people need to know about this.
and god bless the random reddit comment recommending this series, what i wouldn't give to read this series for the first time again.
i should specify this is my opinion and my personal preference, other people might not enjoy it as much and that's okay.

Alice Winters has done it again with another wildly entertaining and emotionally book in Gabriel and Liam’s story. From start to finish, I was completely hooked. The humor is spot on—there were multiple moments where I genuinely laughed out loud (Liam vs. team-building exercises will never not be funny). At the same time, the emotional depth hit just as hard. There’s a a lot of twists and turns that had me in disbelief. Liam’s emotional journey and watching him struggle to understand and process his feelings adds so much depth to his character. He may see himself as someone with darkness inside him, but it’s impossible not to admire his intelligence, loyalty, and the lengths he’ll go to protect the people he cares about. The case in this installment is especially compelling, with a killer who feels like a dark reflection of Liam—what he could become without someone like Gabriel in his life. And that’s where Gabriel truly shines. His moral compass and unconditional love for Liam, flaws and all, make their relationship one of the strongest aspects of the series. The pacing is perfect—there’s always something happening, whether it’s action, humor, or emotional development. It never drags, and it’s definitely a book that rewards a second read to catch all the little details.

This is one of those rare books where I disliked every large creative decision the author made.

I disliked the mystery and didn’t find the villain (and their never ending cavalcade of minions) compelling.

I hated the character assassination that Alice Winters carried out on one of Liam and Gabriel’s friends.

I disliked how comfortable so many of these characters were with doing the wrong things for justifiable reasons (the actions didn’t seem aligned with the characters, nor did they feel like a natural evolution for them either).

I disliked how many assumptions Liam made while he was trying to solve the case. It didn’t feel like he was as smart as he’d been in previous books. This felt more like he made a bunch of lucky guesses, or that he did some messed up arithmetic but still ended up with the correct answer.

I also hated Liam’s actions towards Gabriel in the third act.

This book really should have been 1-star for me, but I can’t bring myself to rate anything with these characters less than 3-stars. I will definitely read future entries into this series, but I will do so with some serious side-eye.

This is a mystery/suspense dark romance, featuring Liam and Gabriel, and is book three in the Deadly Mistakes series.

Liam tries to balance his secret life with his relationship with Gabriel, but a serial killer case drags them both into danger. As the lines between right and wrong blur, they must choose how far they’re willing to go to stop the killer.

I absolutely loved this one and this series! Liam and Gabriel’s relationship mixes danger, humour, and domestic moments, making it both intense and fun to read. The witty banter, the suspense, the coworker interactions, the cats - perfection!!

My ears have a massive crush on Greg Bordeaux, he does a phenomenal job of these characters.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 3 in series
MM dark romance
Murder / Suspense
Established relationship
Grumpy x Sunshine
Detectives
Morally grey MC
Witty banter
Forced proximity
Living together
Pet dads: cats
Melts for him
Team building exercises
Blackmail
Serial killer
Cat and mouse
Spicy times
Minor 3rd act break up
Found family

Ok, so it’s official. I have fallen in love with Liam. Yup. I did not expect it, but it happened. Now, he sits right up there with Gabriel in my high regard. I don’t know what that says about me, but, hey, the author is very persuasive.
A Present Mistake is an excellent continuation of this series. I enjoyed seeing all the characters I’ve come to expect. They keep these scenes moving forward with humor and no small sense of exasperation.
Gabriel and Liam are still a good couple, even when they are questioning their place in each other’s lives. I love their dynamic and I hope they keep coming back for more.
It tickled me to see that Jesse played a bigger role in this book. It shocked and distressed me when I found out what brought him into a main character role, though.
I enjoyed this storyline. It allowed several of the characters to shine. It took the reveal to show me who the bad guy was, and boy, was I surprised. I was on the edge of my seat throughout.
This series keeps getting better and better.
I look forward to more from this author.

The ever dependable Alice Winters has once again delivered another very entertaining and engaging instalment in the lives of Gabriel and Liam. One moment I was laughing out loud, the next moment it was the feelings that got me and I even once closed my Kindle and exclaimed “what the…didn’t see that coming!” From hilarious team building exercises that Liam couldn’t manage to get out of and Gabriel attempting to sort out his things before moving in with Liam the hilarity was perfectly balanced with emotional moments. Especially Liam having to acknowledge his emotions and not knowing what to do with them. Of course these two wonderful men are on the case with all the usual sidekicks from the department. There’s a bit of action and drama adding to the mayhem before the intriguing case is solved and all is once again right in Gabriel and Liam’s world.

“I’m selfish,” I admit.
“Then so am I.”
“I’m possessive.”
“Then so am I.”
“I could destroy you,” I say.
“And so could I. We’re in this together.”
I loved everything about the book. I am obsessed with Liam and Gabriel. And I want more of these nail-biting, edge-of-my-seat suspense plots. I was hooked from the first chapter, and it got better with each one. The humor was spot on, as always and liam's "I- will-burn-the-world-for Gabriel" energy was more intense and beautiful. I enjoyed every second of this book.
“No one, and I mean fucking no one is going to hurt you and get away with it. I don’t fucking care if they didn’t leave a physical scar on you; I will destroy their fucking lives.”
“Anything you ever need, I will give it to you, Gabriel. It doesn’t matter how wrong it is. I will give it to you.”

I am here for more!

I was not prepared for the rollercoaster of a ride this latest installment has done to me! The latest case has Liam wanting to do things his way to stop the person from continuing their path of destruction. But when someone finally gets the uper hand on not only Liam but his friend groups they are pull to the test what is wrong and what is right. Alice does brilliant in weaving this web of mystery snd suspense and showing a whole new side of Liam. It was a beautiful thing to see their friendship bonds strengthen and how fiercely they all stick up for each other even when things are set against them. Gabriel is his beautiful supportive Gabriel self and fights for all he believes in even when things don't go as planned.

I freaking love Liam. He makes all the other characters seem dull and boring. His constant bullying and blackmailing tickles and I don't know why.
Liam is trying to enjoy domestic bliss with Gabriel when an odd murder falls into their laps. The murder intrigues him due to nature of how someone tried to dispose of the body. While trying to solve this problem another crops up. Liam of course figures out the first problem which has an unfortunate consequence. With the issue from the first problem, bleeding into the other one that cropped up Liam and Gabriel must figure out how far they will go to help a friend.
This was a great read. There were enough twists to keep me engaged and plenty of lighthearted scenes to break up the drama.

Another adversary for Liam

Liam makes me think of an evil Sherlock Holmes with the way he is always thinking one step ahead of everyone else. Alice Winters is not as funny in this series as she is in other ones, but she still has a very clever way with words. I always end up reading her books three or four times because there is always so much in there to enjoy. The plot of this book is marvelous and the story just keeps building up and up. There is again a lot that Liam and Gabriel and their friends go through and there are parts of this book that made me cry for real. I especially love the bits where she includes cats because I love cats, but also because she uses them for some very funny and heartwarming moments. Well worth reading.
