This is the second instance in my indie reading journey where I genuinely said to myself, "This book, Book 2?? I just *know* like know deep in my bones know, this is the book the author wanted to write"
That's not to say Book 1 wasn't good, because it was but A Bright Blight said to me, "I would like for you to see the real me" and I fell so in love with this series once I did.
First and foremost, Dio surprised the hell out of me in the best way with his taking on the role of possessive MMC and I ate it up! The chemistry and yearning between him and Chaosta is TOP-TIER, I could not get enough of their scenes together. These two would go to the ends of the earth for each other and we all deserve love like that.
The twists??? The twists!!! Oh my GOD THE TWISTS!!?!%@%!%+_#%@: -- that is all.
We maintained some of that high stakes tension from Book 1 but the pacing broke it up with so many hilarious moments- I cackled so many times. Snorting like a damn horse.
The ending- utter devastation, best possible way to end Book 2 so that I know Book 3 is going to be EPIC.
So, yeah this trilogy? added to my auto recommend books. 100%
A Bright Blight by Charli Nile picks up right where Runes to Rain left off, which I really liked because the story continues without a big time jump and keeps the same characters and storyline moving forward. It made it easy to get pulled right back into the world.
This book took the story in directions I wasn’t expecting and made me feel a wide range of emotions while reading. There were moments that were frustrating, sad, exciting, and even a little confusing in the best way, and it left me with plenty of questions that make me want to keep going with the series.
There is also a pretty major plot twist that I did not see coming at all, and it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the book. It completely changed how I was looking at the story and made me even more invested in what happens next.
I really enjoyed seeing the characters continue to grow while the stakes kept getting higher. If you liked the first book, this one builds on the story in a way that kept me fully invested the whole time.
This was a 5-star read for me, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next book.
A Bright Blight is an amazing follow-up to Runes to Rain, which was easily one of the most amazing and unique discoveries of my recent foray into the Romantasy genre. Author Charli Nile takes the foundational 'cold war' between Angels and Demons and expands the lore, giving us a much deeper look into the history and backstory of the fight between light and dark. While the first book introduced a small slice of this dark and polluted world, the sequel significantly scales up the world-building, making the setting feel broader and more fascinating.
The heart of this installment, like the first book, has to be the found family dynamic between Chaosta, Dio, the Boys, and of course my new personal favorites: the demons. Another major highlight for me is the magic system. As I mentioned in my review of Runes to Rain, Nile has created one of the most original systems I’ve ever encountered.
A word of warning for those who enjoyed the slow burn of book one: the spice level has been cranked way up! It certainly isn't for the faint of heart (though that might just be the perspective of a relative newcomer to the genre like myself).
The finale is something else entirely. It doesn't just surprise you, it leaves you white-knuckled at the edge of a cliff. I am left desperate for the next installment to see what fate has in store for these characters.
What I loved most in this book was Chaosta’s growth. She no longer feels like someone just searching for answers. There’s a shift in her. A quiet awareness that begins to shape the way she questions, reacts, and understands what she is becoming. It’s subtle, but it changes how she moves through the story. Her dynamic with Dio carries so much more weight here. There’s tension in everything between them. Not just distance, but restraint. It feels intentional, like there are truths sitting between them that neither of them can fully ignore. As those truths begin to surface, that restraint starts to shift. Their connection becomes more consuming, less controlled, and more deeply tied to everything unfolding around them. The author’s writing has noticeably improved through the series, and it’s genuinely satisfying to witness that growth. Everything feels more refined, more confident. And the spice? Really well done. Just the right amount of dirty without feeling excessive. Dio still made my blood boil at times, and honestly, I’m glad he did. I appreciate that he wasn’t suddenly softened into someone unrecognizable just because of love. It feels far more real. People don’t magically change overnight. What stood out even more was how his struggle with addiction was portrayed, especially within the relationship. It felt raw without being overwhelming. The emotional turmoil sits in that uncomfortable space where it should. Chaosta’s dilemma adds another layer to everything. Even as the chosen one, her actions rarely feel like they are truly her own. That lack of control, that quiet resistance, makes her journey feel heavier and more complex. The found family continues to be one of the strongest parts of the story. That sense of belonging, even in a world that feels increasingly unstable, adds warmth to something otherwise heavy. The demons especially feel more present this time. More involved. More understood. And the magic system remains one of the most compelling aspects. It doesn’t sit quietly in the background. It feels woven into everything, almost intrusive in the way it influences thought, choice, and consequence. There’s a clear shift in tone as well. The story feels more intense, more emotionally charged, and the romance reflects that. Everything feels like it’s building toward something bigger, something just out of reach. And I think that’s what stayed with me most. The feeling that nothing here is entirely in their control.
Reading A Bright Blight felt like stepping deeper into a world both familiar and unpredictable. The story expands the scope of the trilogy in ways I didn’t fully anticipate—more complex magic, higher stakes, and morally gray choices that make the characters feel very real. I was particularly drawn to the found-family relationships between Chaosta, Dio, and the others; they give the fantastical elements a genuine emotional core.
The pacing kept me engaged throughout, though some transitions between action and introspective moments felt a little uneven. I appreciated the originality of the magic system—it feels fresh and adds depth to the world-building. The romance and mature content were more pronounced than in Book One, which surprised me but fit the story’s intensity.
The ending left me on a cliffhanger, eager for the next installment, which is exactly how a sequel should make a reader feel. Overall, it’s dark, emotional, and thrilling—a satisfying continuation that deepens my connection to the characters and the world Charlie Nile has built.
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5) Strengths: Emotional depth, character relationships, imaginative world-building, compelling cliffhanger. Weaknesses: Slightly uneven pacing in parts, some minor underdeveloped supporting character arcs. Content Notes: Dark fantasy violence, morally complex situations, mature romance/spice.
Picking up right after Runes to Rain this book didn’t skip a beat. I am normally not one to say the sequel is better but I really enjoyed book two a lot more. You get to dive into more of the side of the angels and how they are as well as getting to learn more about another character mentioned in book one, Bonum. Bonum was actually my favorite character in this one but I don’t want to give anything away about that.
Again, I was confused in quite a few points of this book. There were a lot of added characters toward the end and I just felt like I struggled keeping up at points.
Something I really loved about A Bright Blight was seeing more of both sides with the demons and angels. It made me question who to fully root now. Are both sides in the wrong? I also really liked the way Chaosta kinda finds herself more in this one and how she really starts making more decisions for herself. She’s one tough cookie that’s for sure.
I truly appreciate the arc opportunity. Charli is a sweetie and I look forward to seeing where the story goes next.
A huge thank you to Charli for the opportunity to review this ARC! You really have written something special with these books 🩷
A Bright Blight picks up right where the first book, Runes to Rain, left off. I was so glad to be immersed in this world again. The world building in this book expanded upon the first book beautifully, giving us more details about the runes and elemental magic. I also loved being transported into Chaosta’s dreams/ visions. The characters have all been through a lot, but it was great to see them growing and getting stronger in many ways.
Chaosta and Dio were so cute together in this book 🥲 I love them both. The spicy scenes were great, and added to the story without overshadowing the plot.
The ending!! Ahhhh!!!! I need book three immediately 😂 So excited to see what Charli has in store for us in the final book of this trilogy!
I highly recommend everyone check out this book! It officially releases tomorrow, April 2nd. Make sure you follow Charli and show her some love as well 🩷

AHHHH A Bright Blight was SO good! It picks up right where Runes to Rain left off which hooked me immediately. There was a lot more to learn about the world, and Charli wrote it so well! The more I learned, the more I felt almost unsettled in the best way. A Bright Blight is a lot spicier than Runes to Rain, and I loved seeing how Chaosta and Dio's relationship built throughout the novel. Chaosta's character development was AMAZING to read about. I also loved how much more the Demons were involved in this book. I will never stop talking about Malam 😭 I definitely know A Bright Blight is going to stick with me for a while. Thank you so much Charli Nile for providing me with an ARC to review! I can't wait for book three.
