There are canyons all over the planet, and the Grand Canyon in Arizona is not the biggest. Yet because of the spectacular colors in the rock layers and fascinating formations of boulders, buttes, and mesas, it is known as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Starting with a brief overview of how national parks came into being, this book covers all aspects of the canyon--how it formed, which early native people lived there, and what varied wildlife can be found there now. A history of the canyon's end-to-end exploration in the late 1860s and how the Grand Canyon became such a popular vacation spot (5 million tourists visit every year) round out this informative, easy-to-read account.
My four year old wants to go to the Grand Canyon so I figured this was a good place to start. She loves the maps that come with some of these texts and every time we read, she gets out the map and shows me the trail we are going to take to get to the Grand Canyon. It is so darn cute, I don't have the heart yet to tell her how long of a trek her way would be.
This book is a great short introduction for children to the Grand Canyon, and in its few pages it gives a lot of information about the geology, biology, ancient dwellers, modern explorers and its development as National Park and tourist attraction.
Combining just enough history, science, and culture to create a full picture of the Grand Canyon, this book is just right for anyone with even just a little curiosity about the topic. Explanations of the Grand Canyon's discovery and exploration are told with exciting detail; descriptions of its environment are presented with interesting facts. The book even includes tips for visiting; I finished the book thinking about how to plan a trip to this majestic place!
The book is about the Grand Canyon and it talks about the animals and how it was formed, and lots of people who explored it. My favorite part was John Wesley Powell's journey through the whole canyon. I didn't have a least favorite part.
“Where Is the Grand Canyon?” by Jim O’Connor is an informational book about the Grand Canyon. Even though it is titled “Where Is…” It doesn’t only talk about where it’s at. It also talks about how it was created, what happens there, what the Grand Canyon "holds," and the history behind it. I never really like books that had to do with geography but now that I read this book, I changed my mind. It’s actually not that bad (or at least this one is)! The reason I say this is because as I read on, I thought about how the canyon might look in real life and I saw it as a masterpiece! It could be beautiful! It could be breathtaking! It could be HUGE! The illustrations are what really got me to see them! So, I recommend this book to ANYONE because this book isn’t disturbing in ANY possible! It sure did change my point of view and teach me A LOT of things. This book, just like any other informational book or biography, is helpful in teaching you about a subject! In this case, it is the Grand Canyon. So therefore, I recommend this book to anyone, youth or old!

Where Is The Grand Canyon? By: Jim O'Conner Did you know that the Grand Canyon is located in Arizona, it is the 50th national park. In the summer of 1913 Roosevelt returned to the Grand Canyon with his son Archie, during their vacation they hunted the Grand Canyon. In 1919 The Grand Canyon became the National park. Every year millions of people from all over the world travel to the Northern Arizona to see the Grand canyon. The Grand Canyon is a steep deep sided gorge. The Grand Canyon twists and turns for 270 miles. The Canyon is listed as one of the seven natural Wonders of the world. It's summit is29.029 feet high. The Canyon today can see at least eleven layers of rocks on it. The oldest rock on the canyon is called the Vishnu Schist. It is 1.7 billion years old, and it is mostly black in color. The canyon is between 800 million between 1.2 billion years old. I really liked this book, because I loved learning about the Grand Canyon and where it is located. This book was amazing to learn about how old it is. I think other people that like to learn about history and big things will like this book.
Recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, not for its grand size (it's not the biggest) but rather for all the grand colors seen in the rock layers, particularly when lit up by the sunset. Where Is the Grand Canyon? by Jim O'Connor takes us on a trip back in time and describes how the Grand Canyon formed over millions of years to become what it is today. The author describes the meanings in the various layers of rock that have been exposed due to erosion and other natural effects. Having been there myself several times, it is one beautiful and unforgettable stop, especially when seeing in person for the first time. It is breathtaking and beyond that it is indescribable! Seeing it in pictures or on videos cannot replicate that first time of walking up to the edge and taking in the colors and vastness of the scene. People sometimes sit staring for some time in peaceful contemplation. But, back to the book, the author reveals the early inhabitants to the area as well as the first Europeans to discover it. Read the book, then plan your visit to see it yourself; you deserve it!
"This massive canyon was formed by the constant erosion of the Colorado River..."
"This massive canyon was formed by the constant erosion of the Colorado River for the last six million years."
This is more than just Where is the Grand Canyon, this gives an introduction to our national park system, gives an idea of the size of the Canyon compared to other parks as well as its popularity, and I loved how it explored the plants, animals, and people that have called the region home over the centuries, complete with looking back to before it was part of the United States, and how it came to be part of the US.
Highly recommend for anyone taking a curious kid to the Grand Canyon, they'll learn about the layers of stone, and colors, how small things appear from the rim -- but how large they truly are down at the river, and so much more.
A great book that provides information about the Grand Canyon, including the history and information about the people, flora & fauna that lives in the area.
Some interesting things that you may or may not know:
The Grand Canyon is considered one of the 7 NATURAL Wonders of the World.
Although the difference in climate (traveling from the canyon floor up to the North Rim) "is like traveling from Mexico to Canada, amazingly these biotic communities are only a mile apart!"
At the end of the book is a Timeline of the Grand Canyon, as well as a Timeline of the World. Also, there is a Bibliography and a colorful map.
Side Note: On February 26, 2019 the National Park Service is having a Centennial celebration in honor of the Grand Canyon, which was designated a National Park 100 years ago!
I learnt a lot about Grand Canyon after this book and also the beginning of national parks in United States. Before, I thought there’s nothing more than rocks in the canyon , I was wrong, there’re wild life and river down there there are even native Americans that had lived there for at least the last ten thousand years , they made tools to hunt and do farming. Then, other people also started exploring this place some wanted to find treasure or natural resources, an adventurer named John Wesley Powell had risked his life there on the cliffs to study the rocks in the canyon. The number of species of animals and plants are also amazing. This book helped me found interest in nature , I realised the earth is a place that human can never have enough time to know all of it.
This is a book that I read with my ten year old girl as part of her Accelerated Reading school project. Though I have visited the Grand Canyon I found a lot of information I did not know. One was about the explorations that were done and another about the woman architect Colter responsible for many historic buildings there. Remarkable that a woman was afforded that opportunity a century ago. My girl was impressed by this fact. As a whole I find these series well done, concise but full of information.
It was OK. I really don't like non fiction but I managed reading it. I really learned a lot about the Grand Canyon. Like that apparently 7000 people have died from falling off the side. Ummm a little scary but it was interesting I guess. Many people have tried and failed to explore the whole thing. No one has actually. I recommend this book to anyone who likes non fiction.
An informative read about the history of the Grand Canyon--how it was formed, how it was discovered, and the different Native Americans and now tourists who live and visit there. I was intrigued with how wide the Colorado River is and reading it made me want to go visit the Grand Canyon and its grandeur. The Grand Canyon itself is fascinating, but this book had me nodding off.
Broadly informative from history, geology, Native American life, flora and fauna, architecture, and the damage humans have caused. I just wish this series would put the money into photographs instead of cheap looking black and white drawings, especially when you are showing off the beauty of a place like the Grand Canyon.
Better-than-average informational text for upper elementary students. Covers both history and science topics. Dry in places, this book also holds some wonderful stories of the Canyon, and the author is at his best with some story of adventure or humor to impart. The highlight is the dramatic rescue of John Wesley Powell using a pair of long johns.
Excellent illustrations and diagrams. Recommend for kids who want more information after reading the more literary choices, or one needs to fit all of a Grand Canyon study into a single book.
I learned some pretty cool things about the Grand Canyon. First, about five million tourists visit the Grand Canyon every year. Second, Native Americans have lived in the area for over ten thousand years. Third, it is known as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. This book was pretty cool and I am exited to go there this spring!
I'm preparing to hike from the North to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in a little over a year. This book was an excellent overview and discussed some pretty neat things about this beautiful canyon. I'll read it again shortly before my hike!
Wow, so much information in a little book. A must read if you enjoy the outdoors and adventure! I learned so much from reading this and it inspired me to look up some more books about the Grand Canyon.
