We started reading "The Hamlet Chronicles," by Gregory Maguire, while one of the children who listen to me read was away from home helping a friend recover from surgery. She didn't want to miss any of the remaining books in the Great Brain series!
Well, the Hamlet Chronicles -- of which "Four Stupid Cupids" is the fourth book of seven -- have proven to be an enjoyable diversion. And the books have gotten better as we've gone along. The writing has improved, the characters have developed, and the stories have gotten more interesting. The characters are somewhat caricatured, to some extent even comical or cartoonish, but in a way that helps to accentuate the various qualities that do tend to distinguish different personalities in life. Although the author probably does lean to the liberal left, and there are hints of "political correctness" in the books, there's nothing over-the-top or in-your-face, but more of a light-hearted laugh-at-yourself sort of fun.
The books are quirky and humorous, but also thoughtful and sweet. All of us have been enjoying them, and have eagerly devoured them over the past month or so. We're actually ready for the final book in the series at this point, and we're all looking forward to seeing the conclusion.
