Zoe: The impossibly handsome man taking up one of the tables in my bakery every day is an aspiring novelist chasing a dream. I admire his dedication and am cheering him on. There’s also an attraction simmering between us that we can’t seem to ignore and I don’t want to.
Miles: When I escape to a charming beach town to outrun my writer’s block, a most unexpected inspiration comes in the form of a flour-dusted baker and her charming bakery. And for the first time in years, a woman likes me for who I am and not for the name on the cover.
I know the longer I let Zoe believe I’m a nobody, the harder the truth will land. And when my identity is finally revealed, will she forgive me for keeping it a secret?

Find a sunny spot, grab your favorite cold beverage, and lose yourself in book 3 in the Midlife Meet Cute Beach Reads series. Plot Twists and Pastries by Leah Busboom, may be on the shorter side, but Leah gives her readers a story worth reading.
When Zoe and Miles meet, it is an instant attraction for the both of them. Zoe is a long time resident of Sea Breeze Harbor and has never seen Miles before in her small town. Miles came to Sea Breeze Harbor in hopes to break through his writer’s block and for some reason (we all know the reason) he starts cranking out the words after meeting Zoe. However, Miles may be a big time author, he doesn’t put his pictures in his jackets and uses a pen name. A past situation made this needed to keep himself and his daughters safe. As he and Zoe get to know each other, he is worried about what will happen when she finds out he is Mason Cox.
Zoe is such a sweet FMC. She wants to find love, yet feels as though time is running out for her, due to her age. Girl, love has no age limits or requirements! Miles lost his wife years ago and is ready to put himself out there again, but his hidden career does make it tricky to get close to people. But things are easy between the two of them and they fall quickly. I loved seeing Miles talk about Zoe with his daughters! It is easy to feel his excitement.
While the hidden identity does cause some hurdles for these two, as always love wins. Leah’s books always promise a happy ending and this one delivered. Leah wrote both characters in a way that is easy to connect with them and wants to see them both happy. While Miles does keep his author self hidden, I do understand why. At the same time, it provided a layer of suspense, especially about what will happen when Zoe finds out.
As always, review any author notes before reading.
What to Expect: ☕Small Town Romance ✨MCs in their 40s ☕Love Later in Life ✨Love After Loss ☕Single Parent Romance ✨Bakery Owner FMC ☕Author MMC ✨Hidden Identity ☕Closed Door Romance
Zoe owns and operates her own bakery in Sea Breeze Harbor, and loves trying out new recipes. One day, someone she’s never seen before comes into her bakery, and he is…well, hot. Zoe has never been married, and she’s starting to feel like she’s running out of time.
Miles is under a lot of pressure to get his newest book rolling. He’s a bestselling author under the name Mason Cox, but after a bad situation that threatened his safety and the safety of his daughters, he doesn’t put his picture in any of his books. When he first comes to Zoe’s bakery, he’s immediately attracted, even though she’s just been through a mixer hiccup that covered her top half in flour.
It’s been years since his wife passed away, and he’s ready to find love again. Somehow, being at the bakery has invigorated him, and he’s writing thousands of words a day.
Naturally, since Miles is not advertising that he’s a well-known author, Zoe decides he’s just starting out. He doesn’t correct her on that, and that’s something that’s going to bite him in the patootie later.
Miles and Zoe fall hard for each other, to the point where Miles is calling his daughters and telling them about Zoe. But there’s that ticking clock that’s counting down to Zoe finding out his secret.
I really enjoyed this book; it’s a fun and easy read, and Miles and Zoe are adorable together. What I didn’t expect was to see the name Brandi for the character of Zoe’s employee. My name is Brandi, spelled the same way, and I can’t tell you the last time I saw a Brandi of any spelling in a book. It’s just not a common name, and has been associated with some less that savory things, so I was absolutely delighted to see a Brandi in this book.
Zoe and Miles have to leap over a few hurdles before they get to that happily ever after, but they get there, and it’s just as sweet as the rest of the book. It’s a perfect beach read, so get the book!
This delightful small-town romance was everything I wanted in a feel-good beach read. Filled with warmth, humor, and plenty of sweet moments, it proves that love can find you exactly when you least expect it.
Zoe and Miles were absolutely adorable together. Zoe's passion for her bakery and her quiet hope of finding love someday made her instantly relatable. I loved how genuine and kind she was, and it was easy to root for her happiness. Miles was equally endearing. A successful author struggling with writer's block, he finds far more than creative inspiration when he arrives in Sea Breeze Harbor. Watching his feelings for Zoe grow while trying to protect the secret of his hidden identity added just the right amount of tension to an otherwise cozy romance.
Their chemistry felt natural from their unforgettable first meeting, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship blossom through shared conversations, laughter, and simple everyday moments. The hidden identity trope was handled well, creating emotional conflict without overshadowing the sweetness of their connection. I especially loved seeing Miles share his excitement about Zoe with his daughters, which added even more heart to the story.
The charming coastal setting, lovable supporting characters, and bakery atmosphere made this the perfect escape. Even as a novella, the story never felt rushed, delivering a satisfying romance with plenty of warmth, hope, and a well-earned happily ever after.
If you're looking for a clean, heartwarming romance featuring mature characters, a cozy beach town, hidden identity, second chances at love, and all the sweet swoons without the spice, this is a wonderful book to add to your reading list.

I love small-town romances; I also love fake dating and small-town bakeries. This book has all of these elements, so it was bound to be fun for me.
Zoe owns a bakery in Sea Breeze Harbour. She's happy enough with her life, making new flavoured muffins for her customers and fighting with Big Bertha, her mixing machine. Her life is suddenly changed when a handsome newcomer enters the bakery and flips her world upside down. Suddenly, she has someone new to bake for.
Miles is looking for inspiration for his new book when he enters Zoe's bakery and finds her covered in flour. Suddenly, his muse returns, and he spends his days writing away in the bakery whilst sampling the new-flavoured muffins daily. When a flirtatious customer approaches him, he panics and says Zoe is his girlfriend. She ups the ante and claims they are engaged.
I love fake dating; it's so much fun. I love how awkward Zoe was around Miles, fumbling over her words and tripping over things. She thought she wasn't in the market for love, but Miles changes all of that. I loved Miles and the fact he was hiding just how successful an author he really is. I can totally understand why he kept it from Zoe; he wanted to show her his real identity rather than his pseudonym, but it didn't really go to plan.
This was a sweet story and I ate it all up, just like those muffins.

Talk about a funny first impression, oh my this one was a doozy. Zoey is working in her bakery and has just been assaulted with a face full of flour by her giant mixer right before a customer enters. Lets just say Miles will not soon forget his first meeting with the lovely Zoey.
Miles is a successful author who writes under a pseudonym. He is enjoying his anonymity in the small town bakery in this beautiful beach town. He has become Zoe's official taste tester for her new muffin creations. He even helps her name them. I really enjoyed the playful banter between Miles and Zoey. Miles has defeated his writer's block while sitting in the bakery consuming massive amounts of coffee while also fighting off the local ladies who are interested in the good looking stranger hanging out at the bakery.
I love these novella romances because there is so much fun packed into a few pages. There was something especially sweet about this story. I think the characters were just so likable. I enjoyed it immensely. If you need a reprieve from real life and need to escape into a sweet romantic comedy, this one is a perfect fit.
Thank you to BookSprout and the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was such a fun read on my lunch break. Zoe is a baker who sometimes gets into disagreements with her mixer that lead to her being a flour covered mess. We open with one of those days, but to Zoe’s embarrassment an attractive new customer happens to walk in and see the aftermath. Mortified, she retreats back to the kitchen as soon as she can.
Miles is working on his next novel and is having a bit of writer’s block. The charming seaside town baker has lured him in with her ability to laugh at herself in embarrassing situations, and the muffins that she makes have won his heart.
Flirting over muffin naming leads to a fake engagement that becomes a real relationship quickly. The problem? She thinks he is writing his first novel, while he tries to figure out the best way to tell her that’s kind of a big deal. When the truth comes out, Miles’ daughters rush to his rescue to ensure they get that baby sibling they’ve been asking for.
An adorable read that will keep you smiling and laughing, especially at the muffin names.

This small-town coastal romance is a delightful read with engaging characters and a relationship that develops at a natural pace. The story follows a successful author who retreats to a quiet seaside town to overcome a bout of writer's block, where he meets the owner of the local bakery. From there, their connection grows in a believable and heartfelt way.
One of the things I enjoyed most was that the romance wasn't overly straightforward. The characters don't fall instantly into a perfect relationship. Instead, they face obstacles and personal struggles that make their journey together feel more realistic and rewarding.
The character development is another strength. Both protagonists have interesting backstories, although the hero's past has a greater influence on the plot than the heroine's. Even so, they both felt like well-rounded individuals, and I found myself invested in their story.
Overall, this is a warm and enjoyable romance with likable characters, emotional depth, and a cozy seaside setting. I had a great time reading it and would happily recommend it to fans of small-town romances.

This is part of the Midlife Meet Cute Beach Reads series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but it has been fun to read each one.
This is a quick read that had me laughing out loud. Miles and Zoe's first meet is of course a meet-cute and there is instant attraction. Zoe owns a bakery and Miles is in town to try and find inspiration to get over his writers block. And, of course, he finds it at the corner table at the bakery.
I loved Zoe and Miles together. I loved how their relationship progressed - and since it is a quick read it was a fast progressing relationship. Sometimes I love the novellas because they pack a lot into the story and you love it from the first to last page.
I also love that this series has the characters in their 40s. It's fun to have characters that are my same age-ish finding love and their HEA.
I received an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

An engaging, short read to enjoy Miles, an author, is under a deadline and can’t write anything worth printing. So, at the suggestion of his agent, he heads to a small beach town for inspiration. Walking into a coffee shop early one morning, he’s greeted by Zoe, the owner, who happens to be covered in flour. Intrigued by Zoe, Miles determines to get to know her better. Plus, her shop seems to provide the inspiration he needs. Sitting and writing every day in her coffee shop has his fingers flying over the keys, while the attraction between Miles and Zoe only grows. The problem? Miles, a very successful author, writes under a pen name and Zoe thinks he a struggling beginner. Plus, he enjoys just being Miles to her. What will happen when Zoe discovers the truth, especially when she’s been lied to by other men? I received an early copy and this is my honest review.
Plot Twists and Pastries by Leah Busboom is a delightful escape into a charming beach town where fresh starts, deliciously baked goods, and unexpected romance came together in all the best ways. Set in the backdrop of the Midlife Meet Cute Beach Reads, we are introduced to the FMC Zoe, a bakery owner, and the MMC Miles, an aspiring novelist chasing a dream. One of the things that stood out to me about this novel was its lovable cast of characters. Busboom creates relatable, mature protagonists who prove that love and new beginnings aren't reserved for the young. Overall, Plot Twists and Pastries was a sweet, heartwarming romance that celebrates hope, resilience, and the idea that life's best chapters can begin at any age.

Zoe owns a bakery being visited frequently by a writer, Miles Harper, who has a bit of writer's block and keeps his real name and picture off his book covers to remain anonymous. Wanting to be admired for the person he is and not for his "fame", he doesn't admit to Zoe that he is hiding his Mason Cox persona, and is actually a best-selling author. Instead he lets her believe that he is a starving artist. As their relationship progresses, how will Zoe react when she overhears an excited fan run up and identify Miles from a book signing she attended, letting Zoe realize that he has been hiding the truth and misled her about his identity, probably even faking his feelings for her? Will it break up their relationship? Or will they get it all straightened out and find themselves heading for a HEA?
Book 3 of Midlife Meet Cute Beach Reads. Can be read as a standalone.
'A baker. A writer suffering from writer's block. She becomes his unexpected muse. This story delivers beach small-town charm and heartwarming fun, featuring the hidden identity trope and all the swoons (kisses only). This sweet novella proves it’s never too late for laughter, love, and a second-chance happily-ever-after.'
The characters were very appealing and likeable and quirky and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and well paced. World building was excellent and solidly drawn. Another great addition to the series. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

Zoe owns a bakery one day Big Bertha, the mixer, decides to stage a rebellion! Of course, it's the day a very handsome man comes in the shop, Miles, is an author with writers block, he's also hiding a secret, but when he sees Zoe he's immediately attracted to her, flour and all! They strike up a friendship and he keeps coming to her cafe, his block has gone, perhaps she's his muse, but he still doesn't tell her everything, and she's falling for him too, will his secret break them apart? I enjoyed the story, the bakery, the growing connection of the protagonists, and some side characters. For me, the secret identity of the hero isn't a problem. If I were in his place, I wouldn't reveal what I write or with what pen name. My choice to do it or not should offend no one; it's enough for everyone to know about being a writer. In the heroine's place, I wouldn't feel offended or lied to because I understand the writer's side. I wouldn't mind knowing that information when the relationship is really serious, if he wants to reveal it.

Plot Twists and Pastries is a cute little addition to the MidLife Meet Cute Beach Reads collection, and I completely enjoyed the lightheartedness. Miles's attempt to escape his public figure life by becoming a nobody writer in the charming small town of Sea Breeze Harbor is such a fun hidden-identity setup, and Zoe and her bakery treats had me craving something sweet the whole way through. There's a lot packed into this quick story, and it delivers on charm, humor, and heart in equal measure. A perfect cozy, feel-good escape.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a wonderful fun romcom. It’s a great feel good story, maybe a few tears for me but is made me smile throughout the story. Zoe owns a bakery and Miles is a best selling author with writers block. He finds his muse again at Zoy’s bakery. He doesn’t mention he’s a best selling author, he lets Zoe think he’s a starving artist. As these two start to fall in love will Zoe forgive him for his omission when she finds out. Excellent romcom, well written, fast paced and a quick read and I loved it.

A sweet novella with an author who finds inspiration in a small town bakery and overcomes writer's block and a small town baker who has given up on love but hopes to find it anyway.
A fun meet cute leads to an instant connection. Miles finds inspiration and comes to the bakery daily to write, building in that connection with Zoe. But he has a secret identity, adding a bit of tension to the plot.
An enjoyable lunch time read.

I really enjoyed Plot Twists and Pastries! It was such a fun, feel-good read that left me smiling. Since it's a novella, the story does move pretty quickly, and at times it felt a little rushed. That said, one of the perks of a shorter story is that you get to the happily ever after much sooner, which can be exactly what you need when you're looking for a quick pick-me-up. If you're in the mood for a sweet, lighthearted romance that you can finish in one sitting and leaves you feeling happy, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try!
I always love a good novella and this one was so cute. The small town feel, instant connection, and the HEA are just an added bonus. I really enjoyed the meet cute between Zoe and Miles, it was so cute and funny. Miles, the famous author struck with writers block and Zoe the baker who sworn off men. I loved the flirty communication that Miles and Zoe had when he would visit the bakery daily.
This is book three in the Midlife Meet Cute Beach Reads series. A clean, closed door multi author series about characters getting their chance at later in life romances.
This was a fun read. It was short enough I read it within a couple hours. I started on my lunchbreak then continued throughout the day when I had a chance to read. This would also be fun to read at the beach with a cool drink.
Zoe owns a bakery and Miles is an author with writers block The first meet was laugh outloud funny. The relationship between these two was great to see how far they were willing to go. During the read though you might want to grab a muffin because there are many Zoe makes and it made me hungry at times 🙂 I definitely recommend reading.
A short fun beach read that packs more of a punch than you would expect. Leah Busboom was able to develop a great story and characters in less than 100 pages and do it well.
Miles needs a break.. in his writer's block. Seeking solitude and focus, he runs away to a small town where he feels certain he won't be recognized. Zoe owns the local bakery. The perfect place for Miles to write while enjoying fresh baked goodies and coffee. He also enjoys his growing friendship with and attraction to Zoe. But what will happen when she discovers who he is?
Short novella in the Midlife Meet Cute Beach series. Miles and Zoe's story set in Zoe's bakery- Miles , bestselling author with writer's block, ends up finding inspiration among Zoe's coffee and baked goods. One thing leads to another and romance is in the air! Unfortunately slight blip, Zoe is under the impression that Miles is a struggling writer working on his debut novel. How will that work out? Heartwarming short story, easy to read with lots of banter and romance.
This was such a cute, quick read. Miles and Zoe’s meet-cute was so good and had me laughing out loud. I loved their chemistry and banter. I also enjoyed the small town beach setting with the bakery.
This book is part of the Midlife Meet Cute Beach Reads Collection. Thank you to the author for my advanced audiobook copy. This is my honest and voluntary opinion.
This was the best fun, pick me up, short story I have read in a while. I got so much joy from reading Miles and Zoe's whirlwind romance. From the instant attraction, to the impromptu engagement, to the misunderstandings this book was filled with fun and charm. Perfect for a one hour break, this book is sure to bring smile to your face and flutters to your heart.

Some secrets are too big. A small town bakery becomes the spot for a writer to try and break his writer’s block. The baker is beside herself when the handsome man appears in her little establishment. The story follows the clumsy meet-cute thru to a normal conversation. A very sweet tale that is easy to read and provides some tongue in cheek entertainment as well as a few cringe worthy passages.
This book swept me off my feet because of the fun characters and the humor. I enjoyed how Zoe first met Miles and everything that followed in their whirlwind fake romance. He had writer's block until he stepped into Zoe's bakery and she became his muse. It was so much fun to read and it is a great addition to the Midlife Meet Cute series. I received an advance copy of this book, and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
This was such a sweet, cozy romance! A charming baker and bakery owner meets an author struggling with writer’s block, and their slow-burn romance was a delight to watch unfold. The hidden identity added just enough conflict to keep things interesting, and the lovable side characters made the story even more enjoyable.
