He was the first man who ever made her feel safe.

He pulled her from a life ruled by fear, then disappeared without a name, without a promise, without a single explanation.
Years pass. The world hardens. Elowyn learns to survive.

When fate draws him back into her path, the connection between them is immediate and unsettling, something quiet and perilous rekindling beneath the surface. By firelight and shadow, he becomes her anchor in a world that has never been kind. With him, she begins to believe in things once denied to safety, belonging, perhaps even love.

Then he vanishes again.

Alone and unprotected, Elowyn is forced into the orbit of a powerful and dangerous man whose interest is anything but gentle. What follows will test not only her endurance, but the fragile strength she fought to build.

And now… he has returned.

Changed. Silent. Watching her with an intensity that unsettles old wounds rather than soothing them. The past stands between them, heavy with unanswered questions. Trust, once broken, does not mend easily. Nor does the heart forget.

Darkfire of Caerwynfael is a gothic fantasy romance steeped in longing, tension, and the haunting cost of silence. It is a story of protection and absence, of love deferred, and of whether a bond forged in the dark can survive the damage left by time.

Perfect for readers who

• Gothic fantasy romance
• Slow-burn, high-tension relationships
• A deeply restrained, stoic warrior hero
• Yearning, missed chances, and emotional intensity
• A romantic dynamic reminiscent of classic fairy-tale devotion
• A tender romance with no spice

Some loves ignite like wildfire. Others linger like embers, waiting to consume everything.

Some books entertain you. Some books stay with you.
And Darkfire of Caerwynfel did both.

This story is all substance — no filler. Every scene moves with purpose, and the world feels immersive without being heavy.

The villain? So well written I almost questioned myself for a second. Almost. He is not morally gray. He is dangerous. And that tension was so well done.

And the yearning?? Elite. The slow, aching, soul-deep kind. There’s a line in a dream sequence that has lived in my head ever since.

As a former military girlie, I have to say — the battle scenes delivered. Strategic, intense, high stakes. And the Skyrin absolutely understood the assignment.

Elowyn and Draitheon’s growth felt earned, emotional, and necessary for the fate of the realm.

Emotionally? This book gave me everything I want in a romantasy. Especially at the end. I cried. No shame.

What really sealed it for me was the growth. Elowyn and Draitheon evolve in very different ways, and what they each accomplish feels necessary for the fate of the realm. Their arcs feel earned.

And one more thing — there is zero spice. None. Not because it’s making a statement. But because the story didn’t need it. And that, to me, is powerful. It proves that yearning, depth, and strong storytelling can carry a fantasy all on their own.

If you love slow-burn tension, high-stakes fantasy, meaningful character growth, and battle scenes that actually feel epic… this needs to be on your TBR. Thank you Katie Lyn Easter for the ARC to review for an honest review.

This decadent, exquisite, and lush Celtic and gothic inspired fantasy was such a delectable treat. I savored every single moment and felt every single emotion!

Elowyn is stuck living under the abusive rule of her father, and one night, she is saved by a mysterious young man. A young man who is rumored to hold the ancient magic of dark fire in his veins. Years pass, and Elowyn crosses paths with Draitheon, the man who saved her, while attending a magic school. When a school tournament turns sinister, and a tyrant king, Kaedor, sets his eyes on Elowyn, she is left not knowing who to trust. As each day passes, King Kaedor tightens his control over the land, driving his own people to starvation and desperation. Elowyn does all she can to evade the king’s control, but finds that her circle of freedom grows smaller and smaller. With rebellion brewing on the horizon, Draitheon sets out to protect the people of Caerwynfael and free both Elowyn and his beloved kingdom from Kaedor, once and for all.

The banter, found family, moments of weakness and strength, and depth of emotion portrayed by each character was so superbly done. Elowyn and Draitheon as main characters and love interests, were not only so refreshing but also so relatable. Elowyn’s growth as a character spoke to my heart deeply, and her courage to finally speak for herself, I felt in my soul. That kind of strength is something you build slowly, brick by brick, and is not for the faint of heart. Draitheon, while flawed, truly embodied what a hero signifies to me. A hero recognizes his weaknesses and strives to overcome them, and allows duty, honor, and doing what is right to be the catalyst for change. Not power. Not prestige. Not even love, though love can play a role in a change for the better. My heart was taken on an emotional journey that I will never forget. I cannot wait to see what is to come for the next chapter of this world!

The cover of Darkfire of Caerwynfael is an absolute showstopper—it captures that lush, ethereal atmosphere so perfectly that I was sold before I even read the first page. Katie Lyn Easter delivers a beautifully atmospheric gothic fantasy that leans heavily into the "yearning" trope, offering a slow-burn tension that feels like a physical ache. The dynamic between Elowyn and her stoic, silent protector is steeped in that classic fairy-tale devotion, and the emotional intensity kept me hooked through every missed chance and lingering shadow. While I found the pacing a bit meditative at times, the "no spice" approach actually heightened the romantic stakes, making every brush of a hand feel monumental. If you’re looking for a story that prioritizes deep emotional resonance and a hauntingly beautiful aesthetic over high-octane action, this is a gorgeous choice.

4.5⭐s ARC - Review!

This fast-paced romantasy had me hooked from the very first chapter and never let up. There wasn’t a single moment where the story dragged—it just kept pulling me deeper.

It delivers everything I love: magic academia, found family friendships, missed opportunities, second chances, and strong character development that actually feels earned. And that moment near the end? It genuinely got to me—I had tears in my eyes for a second.

The HEA felt completely deserved, which made the journey even more satisfying.

My only small critique is that I wish a few scenes had lingered a bit longer. Some moments were so good I wanted to stay in them just a little more. But I understand why the pacing had to stay tight.

Overall, a captivating, emotional read that I’d definitely recommend to romantasy lovers.

Summary:
We follow 2 POVs, our FMC Elowyn and our MMC Draitheon, whose paths meet by chance, him saving her from a life of fear. It’s a world where a few people are born with magic, each having their own ability, and our MCs meet again at the school for Erynborne. There Elowyn meets new friends, and as her and Draitheon slowly grow closer, she is ripped from him and forced to live in a world she does not belong, with people who do not care for her. We follow both MCs as they venture through hardships to find each other again.

Spoiler free review:
The world and the characters in this story are so well fleshed out without being infodumps of a lore rich world, it truly takes you through a journey and an adventure, both exciting and nerve wrecking, heart wrenching and beautiful. The insight with the double POV was really nice, as you get to both feel and understand both of the story and the characters. The slow burn of their relationship felt real, and throughout I so wished I could tell them both it was going to be okay lol. The story went through so many motions, truly satisfying from start to finish, an epic fantasy tale, with well written battles and a lovely non-spice romance that will tug at your heartstrings.

Plot:
At first I thought it would be an academy kind of story, Harry Potter but with LOTR vibes, but I am happy it was not, and it instead served the purpose of introducing characters and establishing relationships as well as world building. The plot kept surprising me and evolving where I had not seen, it was a very refreshing adventure with lots of different emotions, people, and settings.

Characters:
Also we need to talk about the villain, he was a very well written character, not 2-dimensional with a backstory that made his actions make sense and not just “I am evil and I want to rule the world just because”. His presence was truly menacing, but not in a powerful way, in an uncomfortable snakeish kind of way.
I also need to highlight maybe my 2 favorite characters, Brielle, whose sharp mouth was both entertaining and inspiring, and Alder whose steadfastness and whit made him a big loyal teddybear.
Every character truly shined in their own way, both main and side cast.

Darkfire of Caerwynfael is a story of slow burn, yearning, and healing
A gothic spin on The Princess Bride with zero spice, that grips you from the moment you start reading.

I absolutely loved the author’s writing style here, and it caught me in a chokehold in the prologue and didn’t let me go until I finished the story. I love how Easter writes their inner thoughts with such emotional depth and pain and yearning and it is just chef’s kiss!

The romance is a slow burn, and I love it! It makes you earn it throughout reading the book. And I love their relationship! The dual POV makes it better as we see into both their minds and hearts.

“If the gods set a thousand lifetimes before me, I would walk every one that ended with your hand in mine. In any lifetime, no matter the path, I choose you.”

The villain is also positively hateful and not one-dimensional at all. He is also so well-written in how he uses his power to manipulate Elowyn.

“I am still Elowyn,” I said aloud.
My voice was faint, but it did not falter.
“I am still Elowyn, and he cannot take that from me.”

“He spoke of trust and peace as if they were inevitable; as if resistance was merely a phase. Wherever I turned, he was already there, his smile closing around me like a lock.”

The part towards the ending was tugging on my heartstrings and oh my god!! All the feelings I cannot put into words but it's just so good!
I can’t wait to read more from this author!

One thing of note that took me out a bit from the immersion (and I would like to clarify that this is a ME thing, not at any fault of the author, and this did not affect my rating of the book) was the name of one of the characters. Rhenmar - it’s a modern Filipino name, a name that immediately makes me think of one of my neighbours or something. I have absolutely no issue with imagining that character as Filipino, it’s just that it’s a very modern name that felt out of place in the story for me personally.

ARC REVIEW

This was an outstanding read.
There was longing, swoons, adventure, magic, flying, fighting, friendship, character development (my favorite thing in a book), and a villain you'll love to hate.
There's a lot of nods to Princess Bride (there's an "as you wish" and an "everybody move!"), but there is also nods to Robin Hood and his Merry Men.
You're introduced to a quiet girl who has learned to hide to protect herself, who becomes a queen meant to save a Kingdom.
The "don't touch her" moment comes early when you're introduced to our brooding hero, he carries so much within him, and he doesn't believe himself worthy Everything meant to break him, forms a, molds and shapens him.
They have a band of friends that will stop at nothing for their cause, but especially for their friends.
This book needed my attention more than most, but when I gave it there was no putting it down.
This is a closed romance, not even closed door since no one does "it".
There are kisses.
There are a few swear words. Damn, hell, and "arse".
Smoking pipes and drinking alcohol is referenced.
There is fighting and killing.
There is a summary in the front of the book about some things the author thinks people might want to be aware of, so if there's something that you might not be ok with, then you can reference that.
All in all there was nothing that I wouldn't be ok with my Preteen reading, but then I know her and I know what she can handle and what we have talked about. She is not marketing this as YA. It's to everyone's choice what they read or what they feel is appropriate for their child(ren).
I do feel that the villain is a full on Narcissistic sociopath and while his power is not called this, his power is Gaslighting. While the hero has honor. It tells a fantastic message for young female, and male, readers.
This is a Dual POV book.

If you are a fan of dark no spice romantasty books, this is one for you!

With Princess Bride and Robin Hood vibes, we step into a world with magically abilities, flying, character growth, a villain you'll love to hate, fighting, bonds of friendship, loyalty, and moments that will pull at your emotions.

I love books that suck you right in and then make it hard to put down. From the very beginning Draitheon is protective of Elowyn, but because of his Darkfire magical ability, he doesn't believe he is worthy of her and stays away to protect her. Elowyn has had a hard life and struggles to trust because very few have shown she is worth fighting for or choosing, but she is able to find friends she can trust. With tender slow burn moments, months apart, struggles and doubts, the character growth between Draiteon and Elowyn was masterfully written.

I also loved the side characters. Each one had a specific role that not only helped to shape the story, but also helped to guide the main characters growth. I'm hoping that there will be additional books that will focus on some of these characters.

This is a books that will have you thinking about it long after the final page has been turned.

I received an advanced copy and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Quotes:
"Maybe...I need to forget to be afraid."

"Fact is, a man chooses what he becomes."

"In any lifetime, no matter the path, I choose you."

"You're not alone. I'm here. I won't leave you."

"Greif does not ask if you are ready. It simply places weight in your hands and tells you who must be buried next."

this book wrecked me in a way that I haven’t been in a long time. Its not my typical read, but I’m so glad that I gave it a try.

It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. A large book at 500+ pages and 7+ hrs of reading. But for me once it got past the 20% mark it pulled me in and didn’t let go.

Elowyn, I was cheering for her so many times. Coming from an abusive background, she was used to protecting herself, her heart, her hope. For her men equaled pain, not protection. But through the book, she finds her strength. Not in loudness but with a steel that lines her spine and says she won’t bow to tyrants.

For Draitheon, he is a man of character. He started the book with control, but one that had roots in fear, of his past and his power. But he is tested and refined in a place that would break many a man. He has a strength that draws men to follow, walking with integrity and a strength that allows those under him to rest in that protection, not possession.

The side characters are amazing, steadfast and loyal through the trials the MCs experience. I hope we get some side stories for them.

The romance is slooow burn. Like 90%+ mark. But I’m not really disappointed about it. They both needed refinement and growth for it to be really impactful. And resolution for another issue for our FMC. I don’t want to say too much without giving spoilers away.

There was a spattering of language.

“He did not look away. “If the gods set a thousand lifetimes before me, I would walk every one that ended with your hand in mine. In any lifetime, no matter the path, I choose you.”

There is something wonderfully addictive about a fantasy world that feels both ancient and dangerous, and Darkfire of Caerwynfael by Katie Lyn Easter absolutely delivers that atmosphere. From the very beginning I was pulled into a world filled with old magic, political tension, and the kind of simmering danger that keeps you flipping pages long past when you meant to stop.

The setting of Caerwynfael feels rich and layered, like a place with centuries of stories buried beneath its stones. I loved the darker tone of the book—there’s a constant sense that power comes with a cost, and that no character is ever truly safe. The magic system, especially the mysterious and volatile darkfire, added a really intriguing element to the story and kept me curious about what might happen next.

The characters were one of my favourite parts. They felt complex and flawed in ways that made them believable. I particularly enjoyed watching the relationships develop as alliances shifted and secrets slowly came to light. The tension between duty, power, and personal desire created some very compelling moments throughout the story.

The pacing did slow slightly in a few places while the world building unfolded, but honestly it also helped deepen the atmosphere and made the stakes feel much more real once the action kicked in again.

Overall, this was a dark, magical, and immersive fantasy that kept me hooked. If you enjoy stories filled with dangerous magic, layered characters, and a world that feels ancient and mysterious, this one is definitely worth picking up.

4.5⭐️• kisses only • Yes, if you’re looking for a new heart wrenching read. 😩

My Thoughts:
This story wraps you up and drags you in deeeeep. If you’re looking for a fantasy romance with no spice this is definitely the book for you.
Personally, I couldn’t stop reading. When I tell you I finished this book in less than 24 hours I mean it! I found myself wanting more of certain things in this book. Just wanting more of each moment. More POVs. More pages. Just more more more.
Honestly, this book could be made into a 10 book series and I’d keep reading.
Overall, the pace was well done. There were huge amounts of character development happening. I loved the found family aspect of it. The romance aspect is minimal to the overarching defeat the enemy vibe. Like it’s there but it’s not obsessively romantic. It’s more restrained desire than outright romance.
This is not a lighthearted read. It’s a chew you up and spit you out heart wrenching read. If you’re looking for a book to obsess over this is the one. Just go read it.

Tropes:
- gothic fantasy romance
- slow burn
- found family
- no spice
- magical powers/abilities
- training & battle scenes

CW:
- language: no adult language
- spice: very minimal kissing, no actual spice
- Read the Trigger Warnings!!!!

*complaint*
I found Elowyns use of her powers underwhelming. It seems like in the beginning she’s going to end up super powerful and this is why the king chooses her but I feel like she doesn’t end up being as powerful as she could be. Most of the power resides in Draitheon.

**This is an ARC read.**

Before I begin, I truly want to thank Katie for allowing me to enter Tir Erylith early. For reaching out and sharing this story with me.

From the jump, this story had me hooked, it kept me wondering what was happening next, and what was to come. Everything was well written, well described, well thought out.

I could see everything happening in my head, I could see the time period, I could see the attire, the mannerisms, the characters.. And she wasn’t lying about Aragorn or Jon Snow energy either, I could see this playing out like I was watching LoTR.

We have Elowyn—a meek, shy, traumatized woman who learns how to play both sides of the field, how to find her ground and stand on it on her own. It’s not easy, or fun, but it’s through events that make her eyes open wider than they were.

Draitheon? Buddy goes through TRIALS and TRIBULATIONS throughout this book. Mans goes THROUGH it. But it hardens him, it makes him accept what is and cast out what isn’t.

Not to mention, each side character feels like a fully fleshed out idea, with very real feelings and lives.

So will I be gnawing at the gates of my enclosure until the foreseeable future? Yes, and annoyingly so. I HIGHLY implore you to go and read this, ESPECIALLY if you’re a LoTR or Game of Thrones kind of person.

"Darkfire of Caerwynfael" is not just a dark romantasy, it’s a story that deeply moved me. I truly loved both the plot and its characters.

Elowyn’s ability to perceive what others hide is fascinating, but what stands out the most is her personal growth. Watching her learn to face her own emotions and ultimately act with determination is one of the book’s strongest aspects.

Draitheon is a character defined by burden and restraint. His power, a dark flame that consumes beyond the physical, perfectly reflects his inner conflict and sense of unworthiness.

The romance focuses on emotional tension rather than physical attraction, building through what remains unspoken and shaping the characters’ journeys.

The magic system adds significant depth, with powers that affect not only the body but also the mind and will, especially through an antagonist capable of influencing others from within.

The worldbuilding is another major strength. The attention to detail, from maps to currency to individual abilities, creates a world that feels immersive and alive.

If you enjoy stories with emotional depth, character development, and rich worldbuilding, this book is absolutely worth reading.

Darkfire of Caerwynfael is pure nostalgia for anyone who grew up in the ’80s or loves movies from that era.
The main female character, Elowyn, starts off with a difficult past and little understanding of her own potential. As the story goes on, she awakens to who she truly is, growing stronger and more self-aware with every challenge she faces.
Draitheon, the male lead, struggles with a power he believes to be darkness. Because of this, he holds himself back from what his heart truly wants. But as the book progresses, he comes to realize that he is not defined by that darkness.
The romance between them is a slow burn, but that only deepens the connection, giving their relationship time to develop into something more meaningful and genuine.
This book has it all—intense battles, found family, emotional depth, and never a dull moment. I wasn’t prepared for how emotional I would get and at times, it felt like my heart was being ripped out, and yes, I definitely found myself yelling out loud to no one.
Overall, this was a fantastic read with a little bit of everything. I can’t wait to read it again and again.

The characters were actually my favorite part about the book. Despite Elowyn’s tragic upbringing she remains soft yet strong. She’s written in a way that if she feels pain you feel pain. I enjoyed her character development throughout the story and her chemistry with Draitheon was so good. They had the best tension. 🙌🏻

Overall this was an atmospheric tale told beautifully. I really loved the detailed world Katie built however I want to make note that this did feel more cozy to me than gothic as the lush storytelling reminded me more of the princess bride mixed with middle earth. Nonetheless I adore both those things so this was just my cup of tea! So if you’re looking for a book that feels like being wrapped up in a warm blanket, drinking ale in a hobbit hole with gandalf walking in with an epic quest then you’re in the right place.

When the father who raises you—who is supposed to protect you—instead teaches you that love comes with pain, that hope is a weakness, and that unworthiness is your destiny…

When darkness lives inside you, threatening to take everything you love, you learn to stay away from the light. Your love brings pain, your desires bring destruction, and fate does not favor those who cannot be restrained…

Elowyn and Draitheon have explosive chemistry in this Princess Bride-Robin Hood, gothic mash up, Darkfire of Caerwynfael by Katie Lyn Easter.

This is exactly what I sent the Author, she is amazing and this book deserves a place on shelves!
Includes a possible spoiler..

…. I just finished your book… woman you had me bawling and laughing and nervous and squealing as I read!! This book is joining my physical copy ARC shelf! I loved so many different things about your book! I was drawn in and snared! The emotions this book conjured, I would have been done with it sooner if the kids didn’t need me 😆. When he told her he couldn’t help her my stomach dropped, then the king and his mindfoolery during the trials, I was so glad he yelled out even though he still got taken and put in the prison. Also loved the princess bride feel and the imprisonment almost gave me count of monte cristo type vibes as well(watched it like a week ago)

Now seriously the characters in this book sneak into your heart and don’t let go!

This was an ARC from the author (thank you so much for the opportunity to read this early!)

This was a stunning read - a real medieval Robin Hood story but with magic, rebellion, a proper slow burn romance and incredibly well written battle scenes.

No spice to be had here but honestly that didn't detract from the romance. Any need for it was easily outweighed by the yearning, longing and devotion between Elowyn and Draithwon.

The character evolution and growth was absolutely on point - I spent so much time raving about how brilliant this aspect of the book was. And that goes for all of the characters. The supporting characters were just as well fleshed out as the FMC and MMC.

Overall an outstanding read - immersive and dark. It did threaten to rip my heart out several.times.woth how very attached I got to each of the characters and kept my hooked from beginning to end. I couldn't recommend it enough.

I feel like Christmas came early! A spice-free romantasy with yearning that made my stomach whirl.

If you love green-flag men who protect without force and love without demand, then I think you will love this book. Don’t get me wrong—people often think spice-free means bland. This is not bland. This is a darker book, in the sense that it contains heavier adult themes and emotional moments, so please check the content warnings.

This book is not just a romance. In fact, I would say the FMC’s story is the true heart of it. Her journey was a rollercoaster of heartbreak and healing. I loved her character—her kindness and her determination to keep living.

I look forward to reading more from this author.

The story begins with Elowyn and her journey to Erynborne Hall of Healing and Arms to learn her magic.
Draitheon has the Darkfire magic. While he sees it as a curse, there's so much more to it than that.

This is such a beautiful, sweeping epic adventure. It's a blend of Robin Hood, Pride and prejudice, and the princess Bride with a good dash of Gothic vibes to give the dracula feels. Not only are the main characters written beautifully, but also the side characters that you will fall in love with. This reminds me of an old tale when the fight isn't always easy, the knight in shining armor isn't perfect, the princess in distress is soft yet strong and where a connection grows into something more through time. It's beautiful and breathtaking.

I'm not sure if I'm ok after this book. The trials and loss that the main characters go through left me hallow in a very good way. You felt every inch of their pain and resolve. The subtle choices that were made to keep everyone safe was heart wrenching. The way the MMC was strong with stoic devotion living in flesh. The FMC was built through fear and pain, then learned her own strength. If you want emotional damage that stays with you this is the book. The support characters were just as good and had you routing for them just as much. I laughed and cried for this story. Look forward to what is next.

✨ARC review✨ I have so many thought and feelings tumbling around in my head right now!! Darkfire of Caerwynfael is such a beautiful story. Draitheon is a quiet warrior steady and sure. Elowyn is a wounded soul with strength born from necessity. I loved watching their stories unfold. The pacing of this story is great, we are given time to really know the characters and the world they live in. I was torn between reading through it as quickly as possible to know how everything would turn out, and taking breaks setting the book aside not anxious at all for it to come to an end. The heroes are honorable, the friends are loyal, the stakes are high, and the story is amazing.

From the beginning there was a really powerful bound between Draitheon & Elowyn even without it being said, it was clear to see.

I really appreciate how much Draitheon & Elowyn wanted to help the other & was able to see to their pain. They were apart a little long in pages & time for my taste.

I did really love seeing Draitheon & Elowyn both heal & get stronger, especially Elowyn, though I would have really loved seeing them work at it & heal each other.

The banter was great! I really liked the side character, the group they assembled became a really enjoyable found family, that I would love to see more of in the future.

Thank you so much to Katie Lyn Easter for an ARC copy of her story in exchange for an honest review.

You know those stories that pull you in from the first line, for me that was Darkfire of Caerwynfael. I absolutely loved this story. Following Elowyn's journey from her harsh upbringing to finding herself and her confidence was so incredible. This story will sit with me for a long time.

If you love gothic romance with fairytale magic and emotionally complex characters… this one is for you.

This slow-burn, slow paced adventure is a work of art. The world building was fantastic, building up the series of events that shaped characters on every page. Real stakes were faced, and every piece of the puzzle was carefully placed in order to set up the shock of the plot-twists. I absolutely loved this story, unable to put it down until I knew what happened on the final page. A fantastic book!
Thank you for the arc!

A atmospheric fantasy that pulls you into its world from the very first page, Darkfire of Caerwynfael by Katie Lyn Easter delivers a compelling mix of magic, danger, and emotional depth. The setting feels richly imagined, and the tension builds steadily as secrets unravel and loyalties are tested.
A great pick for readers who love immersive fantasy with a touch of mystery and shadow.
