Marry the king’s assassin. Uncover his secrets. Do not fall in love.Princess Lilias has one day to pack her life into trunks before her wedding to a man she's never met. They call him the Snake of assassin, spy, and the foster son of a ruthless king. Everyone tells her to be terrified.
They're right. But not for the reasons they think.
Because Zarek isn't cruel. He's careful. He sleeps with daggers strapped to his body but refuses to touch her when she's drunk. He climbs through windows but asks permission before his fingers brush her thigh. He walks through palaces and slums like he owns them, but avoids their bedchamber. Keeping her safe, he claims, means keeping his distance.
And Lilias learns that the worst torture isn't fear. It's wanting.
But when their honeymoon tour becomes a trap, staying apart is no longer an option. As Vsenrog's armies gather, Lilias and Zarek realize their forced marriage might be the opening move in a war neither of them saw coming. And in a palace where mirrors are windows and lovers are spies, falling in love isn't romantic.
It's a weapon.
And someone's waiting to use it against them.
A slow-burn arranged marriage fantasy romance where trust is earned blade by blade, kiss by desperate kiss, and the real danger isn't the enemies at the gates. It's the longing that will destroy you both.
Raised by wolves in the mountains of Colorado, Meredith Hart traveled the world to seek her fortune, fell in love with a half-elf ranger, and now lives in a cabin deep in the Maine woods where she writes steamy fantasy romance with snarky, reluctant heroes and the warrior women who love them.
She also writes mythology-inspired paranormal romance under the pen name Samantha MacLeod, and she has occasionally been known to pen a poem or two. Sometimes they even make it into her books.
The FMC, Lilias is the only princess of Marion who is more or less sold/traded by her father to the rival kingdom, Vsenrog, to marry the prince/assassin in exchange for unity of kingdoms.
I loved the relationship development between Lilias and the MMC, Zarek. They call him “the snake”, but from the very beginning he is so tender and considerate of Lilias. Of course they are both in the mindset that the other person is just putting on a performance and doesn’t want them, but the attraction is obvious. They both feel like there is no one they can trust. This is a true slow burn romance and let me tell you, the tension was THICCCKKKK. I was practically BEGGING for them to touch each other. If you love tension that builds slowly before anything happens, this is your book! 😩
This is another Romantasy book that I would consider great for an intro into the Genre. The word building wasn’t anything complicated or dense. The writing is easy and enjoyable to follow. If magic is an important element in your romantasy books, this has very little focus on that. However, there was a mention of magic and I’m curious how that will be explored moving into the next book.
The author does an AMAZING job keeping you guessing. I could never tell what direction the story was going next. Definitely unpredictable. The ending is a cliffhanger, but not in a devastating way. More of like I MUST KNOW what happens next kind of way since there isn’t much resolution yet. There is still so much to be explored as far as Lilias and Zarek’s relationship goes and I can’t wait to continue their story!!! I have so many questions. 😭 Definitely looking forward to future books by Meredith Hart.
Princess Lilias has been promised to someone since the day she was born, until all of a sudden she finds herself being shipped off to marry someone else to unite the kingdoms of Marion and Vsenrog. Zarek, aka the snake of Vsenrog, is an assassin with a reputation to match.
Big miscommunication trope which is never my fave, but watching their relationship begin to build and them both navigating a complete lack of trust in the people around them was enjoyable. You can tell early on that some things are gonna go down, but it still keeps you guessing until the end, which is always an impressive feat for me.
Definitely a slow burn and I’m not gonna lie, I wish it was a little faster BUT it leaves me excited to read more about their evolving relationship in book two.
~Pre-read~ I am a sucker for slow burns!!! The Princess is forced to marry her the kings assassin! Say no more! so excited to have an ARC copy, I will read this one soon!
Forced marriage gone south…or does it…? Slow romantic tension (with a fairly inexperienced princess), secrets here and there, budding desire to protect who they care for. But do the secrets end up being too much?
Prince Zarek and Princess Lilias are forced to marry due to politics. While on their unity tour (to show they are so in love and legit), things start to raise alarms. There’s plot twists that make you wonder what’s next for this couple. You know what they say about marriage, “for better or for worse.”
Overall, this was a 4.5/5 for me! It was dual POV, fast paced and did not repeat scenes much (except the one bonus scene.. iykyk). I still wonder about this wizard that made an appearance but they all shrugged it off like “wow that was weird.. anyways.” I thought it was a refreshing taste that the characters accept that they are both pawns in their beloved Kings’ game of chess. Usually that trope is about how much they are supposed to despise each other but not in this book, I think at least! As they are forced to get to know each other, Lilias discovers the snake isn’t all she thought. As for Zarek, he notices he may have underestimated the Princess. Their curious chemistry kept me invested in their relationship and what would it take to push Zarek over the edge into spilling his personal history.
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sadly, this book wasn't for me. I typically can't enjoy stories where I feel that the romance is in the focus, the plot is barely existing, and the characters think or act in an illogical way just to provide the desired dynamics between them or strenghten the reader's feelings.
I liked some of the characteristics of the main characters (Lilias was kinda badass for a trophy-princess, and Zarek was really down to earth and honest) and the cake cutting scene at the wedding. However, I didn't really feel that the plot is going anywhere, and I got tired of the characters' behavior.
First of all, I had issues with the marketing. This book is labeled as a romantasy, and up to this point, the only fantasy-element was "elves being mentioned" once. Maybe there is more, and I didn't get far enough to see it, but the worldbuilding was definitely lacking. It could have been easily an alternative historical love story featuring an imaginary continent. The descriptions were also lacking. We will learn everything about the physical reactions of the main characters (eg. Zarek has a boner in every mutual scene with Lilias), but nothing really about the world (what they react to, besides eachother). I often had the feeling as if faceless people would be running up and down in empty rooms with all white walls. These also made athmosphere really generic.
Additionally, I felt multiple times some disconnection between the story and the romance, and everything happens to serve the chosen romance dynamics, even if it's illogical. Zarek and Lilias don't manage to meet early (because the wedding needs to happen so quickly), to keep some misunderstandings between them. Directly after Zarek has to deliver a message to one of the princes (which looks like a horribly chosen job for a spy/assassin), to be avoid having a bonding discussion between them. Zarek gets mad at the lover of Lilias, but not at Lilias when he found them in his bed, because the plot needs him to open up to her.
The flow of the information felt really wobbly. We learned some mysteries from the dialogues, never from the events. Also, the characters kept asking the important questions loudly instead of the story naturally awaking curiosity in the reader. Additionally, these important questions are repeated many times and by many characters. However, we won't receive any answer to anything. I also felt that the character just tries to mirror what the reader is expected to feel. Lilias is terrified of her wedding night as she doesn't want to sleep with a man she has never seen. She even allows her handmaiden to drug her (which doesn't have any follow up! How?) to make it more bearable. The reader is supposed to be terrified (and aroused) too. Later on, after we learn that the act didn't happen, she is dissatisfied. The reader may should be, but why her? She was clearly afraid of her husband and nothing changed it.
I think this can be a pleasant read if you're looking for a romance, but I expected more.
This is another one that I am shocked has so many 4 and 5 star reviews. I picked this up because it’s right up my alley, a tropey romantasy with a princess and an assassin in a forced marriage? I’m here for it. And in the beginning I was enjoying it. But as it progressed, I started to get more and more annoyed. Obviously this isn’t meant to be a genius level literary work. So I’m not going to act like I expected that or that it’s bad because it didn’t live up to that. It’s bad because it didn’t live up to its own promises. For one, what makes these types of stories so good is the tension, the banter, the interest in each other that develops slowly until the characters are in love. They yearn for each other and you yearn for them to kiss (and more!). This delivered on none of that. It’s a pet peeve of mine when characters don’t have their priorities straight and are horny in rather serious situations. And it was literally every few pages that I was seeing that. I also prefer when a the tension is left to the imagination a lot of the time. Unfortunately the most memorable thing about Lilias is that she has great breasts, and the most memorable thing about Zereck is that he’s hard literally all the time. There’s no subtlety at all.
But moving on from that, the pacing is awful. We move on from things so quickly and we learn nothing about these characters. When Lilias first moves to the new kingdom, we switch POVs and then when we reach her again 6 days have passed and we have no clue what she’s been up to and how she’s been spending her time. The characters are extremely poorly developed, you don’t understand any of their motivations other than Lilias and Zereck being horny for each other. You’re not rooting for them because they’re not rooting for them and they never have a real conversation or get to know each other.
The plot is nonexistent and poorly developed, as is the random magic system. I really think the author wrote this with only a few scenes and tropes in mind that she wanted to write and the rest of the book was written around it. At first I thought, okay so it’s just vibes and no plot, and I was here for it! I don’t mind that at all. But if you’re not gonna deliver on the romance and develop the characters in an interesting way, to show us why they are interested in each other, then you have to give me something else to chew on. I mean, I’m here for the romantasy but that’s bad, so plot maybe? No also bad. There’s really very few redeeming qualities about this book and the more I read the angrier I got.
I also don’t understand why people here are saying it’s so well written when there’s no depth or nuance in the writing and it feels super lazy. We don’t even get good descriptions of the dresses Lilias wears even though they sometimes play an important role in the scene (or they’re supposed to I guess). An example of this is the piss poor description of Zarek’s room when Lilias first sees it, or even later when she is just existing in it.
Another thing I dislike is that Blayne’s crimes are not treated with the weight they deserve. This man is a rapist. He manipulated a young girl (I’m assuming she’s a young girl because we never learn how old a single character is in the entirety of the book, but anyway), he coerced and manipulated her into sex and taught her that men could not stop so that he could continue to rape her. This is horrific. Obviously he deserves the worst, but what gets me is that Lilias doesn’t really have complex thoughts about this. She only even realizes the extent of how he has manipulated her later when his whole plot is revealed and he’s taunting her while she’s being pathetic in the cell. No thoughts, smooth brain. Literally. I could talk more about this but it’s late and I want to go to bed so I’m gonna wrap this up.
The last super irritating thing I want to talk about, at least for right now, is the lack of autonomy that our main characters show. Like? What are they doing with their lives? I’m assuming that women have less rights because that’s how it is in a lot of these romantasy books. Is that explored at all? No. Does Lilias have any anger or complex feelings about this? No. She does as she’s told and goes along with her emotionally unavailable father’s plans for her. I will give her some leeway because it can be argued that she feels trapped or whatever else even thought that’s not remotely explored. And perhaps she is rebelling by having a lover, even though it’s incredibly stupid of her to do all that. But Zerak, wow. What is he doing? Other than being an extremely disappointing character that represents really the bare minimum in what we want to see in a male lead. He’s apparently not a rapist and respects women, except when he constantly sexualizes his bride in his own thoughts half the time and ignores her the other half of the time. But other than how egregiously he sucks (I mean, he’s supposed to be an assassin, right? “The snake” literally where?), he has no plans in life and gets nothing done. These characters exist as pawns on a chess board. They wonder constantly about what’s really going on but do nothing to seriously challenge or provoke the decisions made on their behalf. Zerak doesn’t trust the king he serves, and rightfully so. But then he does stupid shit like continuing to drink the wine that is served to him from the same man who drugged and killed his brother. He later does this again and actually gets drugged. This is a minor example though. My point here is that these characters are victims to the whims of the poorly written plot. They wonder about things repeatedly in their own heads, but avoid having conversations about those things or making any real plans. Especially egregious is the honeymoon tour which truly must be the authors way of edging the characters and trying to edge us as readers. In reality, it only pissed me off because what are they thinking? They both know something malicious is going on and that this tour is bullshit that is hiding nefarious intentions or plans. They know that but repeatedly wonder about it while making zero plans or fail safes in case things get ugly. They have daggers. That’s about it. There are multiple times they could use these daggers, but no they just go with the flow. Oh you’re kidnapping me? I guess the author doesn’t want me to fight back right now because I’m not even going to try to use this dagger that was so purposely strapped to my thigh. She does use it later but it comes off like it was an accident even though she did start to train in self defense. Later the author tries to have some semblance of a traumatic response to murdering someone but it’s so poorly done and doesn’t explore Lilias character or tell us anything about her at all. It’s just a bland reaction from a bland character.
Anyway I could definitely keep ranting but I need to go to bed. Don’t read this, I would not recommend. It was such a let down and it bummed me out. Why can’t these authors at least fulfill their promises? I just want a solid well written romantasy.
This book is why romantasy is considered the fast fashion of the book world.
Also I know I spelled some things wrong but I don’t have it in me to care.
Thank you Meredith Hart for the advanced reader copy of your book Bride of Ash & Dust.
The quick witted exchanges and banter kept me entertained from the beginning. The longing and emotional tension between these two created a top tier slow burn. The farther into the book I got, the more I couldn’t put it down (staying up until 11pm on a weeknight! Worth it!) The end of the book had a GREAT reveal and I cannot wait to read the rest of this story!!
Zarek is the Snake, know for being a liar and a ruthless Assassin. Lilias is a princess, who has spent her life sheltered. This betrothal came out of nowhere for both of them, so did everything else…

Y’all this book!!!! This book was so beautifully written. My all time favorite ARC so far this year. There is yearning and slow-burn. Strong FMC and MMC is chef’s kiss. I’m so ready for the next book!!!
Oh my gosh, I loved this book 😩🔥 The slow-burn tension between Lilia and Zarek had me on edge the entire time. Forced together in an arranged union, they have to navigate danger, betrayal, and so much heartbreak, and every choice feels heavy with emotion. Zarek’s restraint—how he protects her without ever crossing the line—made my heart so full, and Lilia being brave and fierce made me root for her even harder. That “almost-but-not-quite” tension? Ugh, it killed me in the best way. I’m still thinking about them. The ending was amazing! I’m so ready for book 2.
Many thanks to the author and R&R Book Tours for the gifted copy of this book!
tw: book contains mentions of violence and death, misogyny, domestic abuse and violence, parental abuse, body shaming, sexual assault
A compelling start to the series, with a slow burn arranged marriage romance, dual POV, and one short spice scene - this book might be a decent one for those slowly dipping their toes into the romantasy genre.
While the majority of the plot action happens in the last third of the book, the initial part spends its time establishing a relationship between the two protagonists. My one major complaint about this book, which might just be a me thing, was the repeated mention of the FMC, Lilias' boobs; wherein just the mere glimpse of their existence drove our male MC, Zarek into an erotic frenzy. This unfortunately kept happening throughout the book, and could've instead been used to further establish the fantastical world. Some parts of the storytelling also felt a bit jarring, where things happened without much explanation, so it took me out of the reading experience a few times.
That being said, Zarek and Lilias were both strong protagonists with a kind heart and I definitely was left surprised by the plot twist at the end.
Definitely think that this series has good potential for world building, especially with the later introduction of elves and magic, and I expect that I will enjoy the sequel a lot more!
I think this might be a case of me and fantasy simply not having our moment right now, which makes me a little sad since I picked up this ARC with high hopes. I’m not entirely sure whether I just wasn’t in the right mood for the genre or if this particular story just wasn’t the right fit for me.
The premise sounded incredibly promising, and I was especially excited to see a dual POV. I always enjoy that narrative style. Unfortunately, the pacing didn’t quite work for me. Some of the moments that felt most important to the story seemed rushed, while other sections dragged and made it difficult for me to stay fully engaged.
I may be doing the book a disservice by not finishing it, but I found myself struggling with the direction the story was taking. I’ve also been feeling a bit fatigued with how much emphasis the fantasy genre has been placing on spice lately, particularly when the plot doesn’t feel strong enough to balance it out.
That said, the concept itself was intriguing, and I’m sure this will find the right readers, especially those who enjoy romantasy with heavier romantic elements.
Many thanks to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Leave everything you know in one day… marry the assassin…don’t fall in love.
“I love snakes”
Highly recommend reading the prequel, Bride of Whispers and Shadows, first! It’s just as fantastic!
The Bride of Ash and Dust is an incredible story that follows the FMC, Lilias, as she navigates the upheaval of her world as she knows it. Lilias is a Princess, through and through, but growing up with her brother and his friends has given her the edge she needs to survive in a world that isn’t always kind. She has been betrothed to a Prince since the day she was born, but her father makes a political move that will change the trajectory of her life.
The MMC, Zarek, also known as "the snake of Vsenrog.", is a witty, take no prisoners, assassin for a rival kingdom. A Prisoner turned Prince that holds secrets of his own. His path is clear…until he finds himself enraptured by a woman that threatens his very existence.
Meredith makes sure that you fall head over heels in love with the characters. Becoming so invested that you have to keep reading way past the time you should have called it a night. The world building and meticulous details throughout are breathtaking.
I devoured this book! And now I have to not so patiently wait for the next in the series!!
Thank you, Meredith Hart for entrusting me with an ARC!
Wow...this book! From the first page it grabs hold of you, throws you into the characters, politics, and world and refuses to let go! I have a serious book hangover from this one. Our FMC, Lilias, although having been raised as a political pawn for marriage since birth, she has a lot of grit! I absolutely loved her depth and development, I've grown tired of whiney princesses and Lilias is definitely not one of them. Lilias has been betrothed to a neighboring kingdom since birth, but those plans take a drastic turn when she is informed she is to be wed to the King of Vsenrog's adopted son, Zarek (The Snake of Vsenrog). Zarek is witty, he's coniving and he's always trying to stay one step ahead of King Malrik and his schemes. So when Zarek is informed of his upcoming nuptials to the princess of Marion, he knows there's more to the picture and is always waiting for the next foot to drop. I love the 'touch her and die' vibes from Zarek, he's definitely a tortured soul and I kept turning the pages trying to learn more about him, because you just want him to win! King Malrik of Vsenrog and his eldest son, Syvan, are truly the villains you love to hate in this story, and they do keep you guessing as to what the next curtain will reveal of their plan and will keep you guessing as to what the endgame is. Bride of Ash & Dust has great worldbuilding and character development and a FMC and MMC that you just will fall in love with! I would give the spice level a 2 for this first book, although I have a sneaking suspicion that will increase over the next book (that I just can't wait for!). This does end on a cliffhanger but so so worth it! I give this book a solid 4 stars, and I did truly love it, I was only a bit perplexed with the sudden introduction of magic and elves when you're 3/4 of the way done with the book. It was a twist to the story as there hadn't been any magic before, just some hinting at elves in old stories luring maidens into the woods, so I'm curious where this development will go, because it was introduced for a brief time before the story continued to progress without it. I'm still very excited for the next book and seeing how everything ties together!

The courtly intrigue, broody morally grey MMC, and feisty FMC kept me captivated. Add in snarky banter, biting tension, and the “my wife”?! I was a goner. Zarek is known as many things: assassin, spy, and the adoptive son of a tyrant king. Yet Lilias slowly uncovers more about her husband and may actually risk falling in love. Will they be buried by their enemies or the secrets that divide them?
With wicked twists, betrayals, and secrets, Bride of Ash & Dust is a thrilling and swoonworthy first installment in a new Romantasy series! I cannot wait for what awaits these characters!
Huge thanks to the author and RR book tours for the review copy opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.
This honeymoon tour took a detour I’m still trying to understand.
The beginning of this story really had me hooked. I was genuinely excited to see how the plot would unfold. However, my excitement faded as quickly as the magical plotline appeared.
I understand this book is intended to be part of a series, and that certain elements are meant to remain open-ended. However, the introduction of magic felt abrupt and underdeveloped. A major magical event occurs and is presented as significant, but it isn’t meaningfully for the rest of the book, which made it difficult to understand its role in the story.
Ultimately, the ending felt rushed, and I found myself losing interest just as the story reached its climax. While I’m still open to seeing how things develop in a second book, this book didn’t fully come together for me.

A special thank you to Meredith Hart, Victory Editing, and NetGalley for this ARC.
This book was so gorgeously written, I cannot wait for the next book to come out. Honestly I don’t even have the words to express how much I loved this book. Meredith Hart did a phenomenal job with both the character building and world building in this book. I was hooked almost immediately. I absolutely adored both the Lilias and Zarek as characters. There is so much depth to the both of them that you discover page by page. I also really enjoyed that both of them are strong in their own ways. I appreciated that neither was some damsel in distress character for the whole book. They save themselves and they save each other. Their relationship together is another thing I thoroughly enjoyed. The slowburn was delicious. How they built trust from less than nothing and that grew into more was beautiful work. I am eagerly awaiting that second book so I can read more about one of my favorite book couples and how they are going to work through what happened at the end of this book. Truly I could go on forever about this book and still not adequately express how much I loved it. So for now if you love a slow burn fantasy romance please go give this book a read. I’m positive you’ll love it!
4 ⭐️ I really enjoyed this Romantasy! It was fast paced and I was really drawn in and intrigued from the beginning. I really enjoyed the story/plot lines. I'm a sucker for arranged marriages, political intrigue and sizzling tension - this book absolutely delivered! I also really loved the dual pov and short chapters.
There were several "loose ends" that I'm looking forward to seeing how they come together in the next book. I will definitely be running to pick up the next installment in this series and hopefully even ARC reading it, if the opportunity arises.
If you are looking for a fast paced Romantasy that will suck you in right away and keep you invested, give this book a go!
Thank you, Meredith Hart for the opportunity to ARC read Bride of Ash & Dust and job well done on this fantastic book!
I have been wanting to jump back into my romantasy vibes with a 5 star read and I think that this was the book to start things right! The chapters are shorter and the book is pretty fast paced, and while it has some aspects that feel a little cliche to this genre, I still very move loved and enjoyed this read.
My only qualm is that I wished that the book was longer and had a little bit more plot. I would have loved to see more training from the FMC, seen more chemistry and scenes between the two main characters, and tried to understand how Zarek was an asset to the king, until he wasn’t?
Overall I loved this book and I would love to live in this world and see more of this world!
This story started off well for me, I love an arranged marriage, slow burn, and “he falls first” trope in a romance. However, there are a few things that kept this from being a great read for me.
For one - this is being marketed as a romantasy, right? Well, aside from a brief spell and elf appearing in the last quarter of the book for just a few chapters, there is no real indication that there is any fantasy in this world. It has kings, princesses, royal kingdoms, all set in a historic medieval type time period. I just don’t see the fantasy elements?? Unless this is something that will be greatly expanded in future books, there is very little world building that I would consider fantasy. And if it IS something that’s coming - well, it should still be in the groundwork and foundation of the first book of a series. Otherwise I don't see how it just POOF appears in the next book lol.
However, my main issue was with the level of intensity that Zarek was thirsting over Lilias’s chest. I started tracking it, and it was like every chapter that was in his POV, when he was standing in front of her, he was distracted - in a very dude frat bro kind of way mind you, by her chest. (And if you look at character artwork like….they’re pretty normal?) It didn't make him attractive or sexy, it was distracting, very immature, and leering in that gross male gaze way.
The slow burn between the two MCs is mostly due to physical separation in the first half of the book. Zarek purposely stays away from Lilias’ bedroom to help avoid any rumors of pregnancy. However - you can’t really get emotions if you don’t spend any actual time together? They don't know each other!
I guess the more I think about it, the more things frustrate me about this book. The last quarter of the book is especially frustrating as we just had 300 pages of not a whole lot happening, and then so much shoved into the last 75-ish pages.
I’m a sucker for a slow burn and this one will have you on your toes the ENTIRE time. I really enjoyed the characters and their development , on going betrayal that purely just kept me on my toes and wanting more. I absolutely cannot wait for book 2!
Bride of Ash and Dust pulled me in instantly. This story is delicate and lovely then sharp and intense, with subtle humor I really loved.
Lillias is the perfect balance of poised princess and fierce heroine. I’ll always love a girl who keeps a dagger strapped to her thigh.
Zarek is such a fun character to read. Funny and tender, but around her, he’s completely undone.
The second half really takes off, with political intrigue woven in so well and twists that genuinely surprised me! And the villains… there are plenty, and you’ll hate them something fierce.
The ending especially has me looking forward to the next book.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to experience this story in advance.
In the ever-expanding landscape of romantic fantasy, it takes a special blend of atmospheric world-building and palpable chemistry to truly stand out. Meredith Hart achieves exactly that in Bride of Ash & Dust, a high-stakes, fast-paced adventure that grips you from the first page and refuses to let go. Blending court politics, ancient secrets, and a romance that feels both inevitable and impossible, Hart has crafted a story that is as addictive as it is emotionally resonant.
The story centers on Lilias, a protagonist whose journey is the heartbeat of the novel. When we first meet her, she is a woman caught between duty and survival, thrust into a world where the margin for error is razor-thin. Her character arc is one of the most compelling aspects of the book; she evolves from a pawn in a much larger, deadlier game into a woman who learns to wield her own agency. Lilias isn’t just a passive observer of her fate; she is sharp, resilient, and increasingly aware of the power she holds, making her a heroine you can’t help but root for.
Opposite her is Zarek, a character shrouded in mystery and weighted by his own dark history. Zarek’s arc is a masterclass in the "brooding protector" trope, but with added layers of complexity that make him feel fresh. As his hidden agendas begin to clash with his growing feelings for Lilias, we see a man torn between the mission that has defined his life and a future he never dared to imagine. The chemistry between Lilias and Zarek is electric, built on a foundation of mutual wariness that slowly gives way to a yearning romance. Hart does a fantastic job writing the kind of "will-they-won't-they" tension that keeps you turning pages late into the night, hoping against hope that they can find a way to navigate the dangers surrounding them.
The pacing of Bride of Ash & Dust is relentless. Hart weaves a web of court politics and looming danger that ensures there is never a dull moment. Just as you think you’ve grasped the landscape, a new secret is unearthed or a hidden agenda is revealed, shifting the ground beneath the characters' feet. It is the kind of book you "plow through," driven by a need to see how the various threads of betrayal and loyalty will untangle.
While the primary romance is the draw, the story is significantly bolstered by a well-rounded cast of secondary characters. Anura and Prince Elrick bring a regal yet strained dynamic to the narrative, while Petrys provides essential support and depth to the world. These aren't just background players; their motivations and actions directly influence the plot’s momentum, making the world feel lived-in and the stakes feel global.
For those looking to dive deeper into the story, I highly recommend picking up the prequel, Bride of Whispers and Shadows. It provides crucial context for Elrick and Anura’s history and sets the stage for the intricate political machinations that come to a head in Bride of Ash & Dust.
Bride of Ash & Dust is a great entry into the fantasy romance genre. It offers a perfect balance of action-packed sequences and quiet, intimate moments of character growth. With a cliffhanger-worthy ending that leaves you clamoring for the next installment, Meredith Hart has firmly established this series as a must-read. Rating: ⭐️ 4.0/5 | 🌶️2.5/5 | ⚠️ ⚠️⚠️
Plot and Pacing:
Let me introduce you to the book that YANKED me out of my romantic fantasy slump. I could not put this one down. I know what you are thinking, not another romantic fantasy with a dark haired morally grey MMC. With its fast pacing and straightforward world building, this feels like a fresh take on a favorite. The drama hits fast and hard and before you know it, it’s two AM and you are googling how long you have to wait till the next book is released. It does have a bit of a third act lag but the cliffhanger it ends on more than makes up for it. The political intrigue sub plot was well written if predictable and the set up for the second in the series flowed seamlessly with the storyline.
Character Development:
Our FMC, Lilias, while every bit a proper princess, is perfectly capable of whatever she sets her mind to, thank you very much (just don’t hand her a needle and thread)! She is brave, cunning and more than a match for her new assassin husband. She is a bit naive at the beginning but as the story progresses our girl becomes quite the savvy politician. Also, to my horse girlies, this FMC willl be your new favorite. Lilias is an accomplished equistrian and it comes in handy more than once over the course of the book.
Zarek, our MMC, is as morally grey as they come. He’s got a past that haunts him, but it is also the source of his strong sense of morality. He falls hard and fast for our girl and you will be on the edge of your seating waiting for the inevitable moment where they both admit to their feelings.
I need to give the author serious props, but the villains in this book are incredibly well written. I think we’ve all come to expect to fall love the villain. But the villains in this book are truly evil, and it is beyond satisfying when they finally get what they deserve.
The Romance:
This is how you write a slow burn. I don’t have a ton of experience with the arranged marriage trope but in combination with forced proximity, the smoldering romantic tension created was perfection. In true slow burn fashion, there is fairly minimal spice (beyond kissing). But honestly, with how much tension builds between the two main characters, even the spiciest of spice lovers will not feel let down.
Overall, a fantastic new addition to the romantic fantasy genre. Fans of From Blood and Ash, A Deal with an Elf King, or The Cruel Prince will enjoy this book. If you love a slow burn, with forced proximity and court politics, this one needs to be put on the top of your TBR! Again, I have to put it out there, horse girlies, this romantic fantasy has your name written ALL over it 🐎.
A big thank you to Meredith Hart and her team for the ARC of this book. I cannot wait to see what comes next for Lilias and Zarek 😍
This is a review also for the Bride of Whispers & Secrets (Prequel novella)
Prequel:
5 ⭐️ | the perfect intrigue-filled warm up
Starting with Bride of Whispers & Secrets was SUCH a good choice because it gently pulls you into the world before everything gets complicated (and deliciously dangerous 👀).
This novella gives us insight into Lilias’s family dynamics and the tension simmering beneath the royal surface — especially her brother Anura and his circle. I loved getting that behind-the-scenes look at how their father operates, because it adds layers of understanding that make the stakes in the main book feel so much bigger.
It’s the kind of prequel that actually matters — not just bonus content, but foundation-building. The political undertones, the loyalty threads, the sense that secrets are already moving pieces into place… SO good.
Plus, it sets the emotional stage beautifully. You walk into Book 2 already invested, already suspicious, already curious.
If you love slow burn tension so thick you could cut it with Zarek’s daggers… welcome home.
This book DELIVERS on the arranged marriage angst in the most delicious way. Lilias is thrown into a political marriage with the infamous Snake of Vsenrog — assassin, spy, walking red flag… except he turns out to be the most careful, controlled, quietly intense man imaginable.
Zarek is the definition of “touch her and ☠️” energy, but also “I will ask permission before I even breathe near you.” The restraint? The tension? The way trust builds piece by piece?? It’s chef’s kiss slow burn.
Their relationship develops in stolen moments, cautious curiosity, and the kind of longing that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Every interaction feels loaded — with secrets, with possibility, with danger.
And the world itself is layered with intrigue: spies, shifting loyalties, hidden agendas, and the constant sense that something bigger is unfolding just beneath the surface.
This isn’t just romance — it’s strategy. It’s vulnerability as power. It’s desire as risk.
AND THAT ENDING?!?!?!
No spoilers… but just know secrets unravel, truths collide, and the final moments drop a revelation that had me staring at the page like ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW.
The kind of cliffhanger that makes you immediately need book two because HOW are we just going to end things THERE?!
Perfect for readers who love: ✨ slow burn arranged marriage 🗡 assassin MMC 👑 political intrigue 🔥 tension-filled romance 🕯 yearning you can FEEL 🖤 trust built moment by moment
If morally complex men who respect boundaries while still being extremely lethal is your thing… Zarek just moved in rent free.
Bride of Ash & Dust by Meredith Hart is an intense, addictive, and amazing slow-burn romance that grips you from the very first page. With a perfect blend of political intrigue, suspense, and forbidden desire, this book knows exactly how to make your heart race. The story revolves around an arranged marriage that is anything but simple.
Lilias, a princess who must leave her life behind overnight, is married off to a man known as the kingdom's most dangerous murderer. But she is anything but weak or naive. She is smart, observant, and surprisingly brave. Instead of letting herself be intimidated, she tries to unravel the truth behind her new husband and the political game in which she becomes entangled. Her strength lies primarily in her perseverance and her ability to continue making her own choices, even in a hostile environment.
Opposite them stands Zarek, also known as the “Snake of Vsenrog,” an assassin, spy, and adopted son of the King of Vsenrog. On paper, he is everything you should fear: deadly, mysterious, and completely unpredictable. But what makes him so intriguing is his contradiction. He is not cruel, but rather controlled and respectful; he maintains a distance, even when the tension between them becomes almost unbearable. His quiet protection and hidden loyalty make him a complex and irresistible love interest.
The dynamic between Lilias and Zarek is absolutely the highlight of the book. Their relationship develops slowly and full of tension, a true slow-burn where every look, touch, and choice holds meaning. The arranged marriage trope is executed perfectly here: full of mistrust, desire, and a growing emotional bond that feels both dangerous and inevitable.
What makes this book extra powerful is the constant threat in the background. What begins as a political marriage quickly turns into something much bigger when their journey turns into a trap and an approaching war looms. In a world where everyone has secrets and love can be just as much a weapon as a sword, Lilias and Zarek must learn who they can trust and whether they can trust each other.
The atmosphere is intense and sometimes almost suffocating in the best way: from palaces full of spies to dangerous journeys and simmering conflicts. Everything feels charged, as if something could explode at any moment.
Bride of Ash & Dust is a must-read for fans of romance who love suspense, political intrigue, and a slow-building yet all-consuming romance. With a strong female protagonist and a mysterious, deadly, yet surprisingly gentle love interest, this is exactly the kind of story that won't let you go.
Thank you to Meredith Hart and Netgalley for the ARC.
When does a fake, forced marriage, start feel real? When you start saying "my wife" and realize the person you are trying to stay away from is the only person you want touching you. When Princess Lilias, is informed by her abusive, cold - hearted father that she has two weeks to get ready for marriage to Zarek prince of neighboring Vsenrog, she only has two choices, keep her head up and show know fear, or be dragged there as a sobbing mess. Zarek, the adopted son of brutal king Malrik is a know assassin and spy, the cold-blooded killer called as the Snake, knows that Malrik does nothing that doesn't benefit himself, can't explain this sudden wedding, and knows he can't love his arranged bride. But when he sees her riding at the head of her escort, standing tall in the chapel without tears, and seductively eating wedding cake off the point of a sword, he realizes she is far more than he has bargained for. He knows that every person in the palace is a spy and showing love will only be used as a weapon, he doubts she wants his touch and the only protection he can offer is to stay away. Lilias learns that the Snake is not all his reputation makes him out to be, he is neither cruel nor violent, he refuses to consummate their wedding because she is drugged, doesn't force himself on her as he could, trains her to fight, and stays away, even when she wishes she could see more of his hard body she glimpsed at their wedding. The more Zarek trys to understand Malrik the less sense it makes, why force a marriage with an unimportant princess of a kingdom with only a gold mine for assets, why has Prince Syvan returned to his father's side, who is the strange man in white robes and why does he have such an interest in Zarek? When Malrik forces the newlyweds out on a honeymoon tour of both their countries, it all starts to feel less of a performance, every time they kiss and dance at the feasts, every night they spend together sharing a room, even if they don't touch, every time he calls Lilias his wife. But treachery is in the air and when Zarek is kidnapped and Lilias is drugged and taken away as a war prize of Zarek's greatest enemy, only trust and the first bloom of love might reunite them. As old secrets come to light, and twisted magical rituals threaten their survival, , only the trickiness of the Snake might be enough to save both of them. Their path together is only just beginning when the stunning cliffhanger will leave you eager for more. The fate of Zarek and Lilias and the growing bond between them will stay in your mind long after you finish this book. I for one can't wait for book 2 to be finished
3 1/2 stars.
This was definitely a slow burn romance. I really liked the characters. Zarek had more to him than his reputation which Lilias came to slowly realize. And Lilias was pragmatic about her forced marriage to a stranger and was going to try to make the best of it by pursuing her passion of horses. The miscommunication trope was alive and well in this book but I didn't find it annoying like I often do. They don't know each other and they don't have anyone they can really trust. This wasn't just sitting down and talking to clear the air. It was about their lives, the lives of those they loved and the fate of kingdoms.
I thought the world-building could have been a bit stronger. I also really wish that there was more fantasy. There is a brief mention elves and a magical encounter but it really had not impact on the story. Hopefully that will be further developed in the next book.
The core of this was deadly international politics, an arranged marriage and a slow burn between the main characters. There was plot and an interesting relationship that slowly built. You can't always find that in romantasies.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
'I have no friends inside those walls, and neither do you'
It is a story of a young princess whose life suddenly changes as she is practically sold to another kingdom and has to marry a man whom people call "the snake of Vsenrog". But not all is as it seems.
The story is told from two POVs. Lilias, a princess of Marion and Zarek, a hostage prince of Dungal. Both characters were well fleshed out and easy to root for.
Lilias is very clever but also naive in some aspects of life. All her life she was controlled and every decision was made for her without her input. The only thing she ever did for herself was taking care of the horses in the stables. She has a unique skill with horses which helps her during many dangerous times. When she arrives in Vsenrog, she is thrown into a world where everyone wants to use her and she has to be very careful if she wants to survive.
Zarek or as people call him 'the snake of Vsenrog' is treated like an adopted son by king Malrik whenever it suits his purposes, other times he is scorned and treated worse than servants. He is very protective and skilled in undercover missions. Brave during a fight but a coward when facing the king. He is portrayed as cunning and says that he won't let them control him but he couldn't figure out any of the king's plots and there is only one instance when he did anything against king's wishes.
The story is fast paced and action packed with many plot twists. I love court intrigue in books and this one had plenty of it. I couldn't predict where the story was going. I liked the relationship between Lilas and Zarek. It was a real slow burn romance. You can really feel the chemistry between them. Their feelings develop slowly and even at the end of the book we still don't know what will happen to their relationship. The world building was not unique but there were hints that it will be more complex in the next book.
Throughout the book there is no magic, we only get a mention of a dragon and then there is the sudden appearance of a magic user near the end of the book. I wish it was explained a bit more.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading the story. The story was very engaging and kept me at the edge of my seat. If you like a story full of intrigue with many plot twists, this is a book for you. I am looking forward to the next book.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGally for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I am a sucker for slow burns and this book gave me just that!
This book was an excellent start to a brand new series! Bride of Ash & Dust was a whirl wind of excitement and anticipation. It started off capturing my attention and keeping it, I do believe I read this book in 24 hours!
The book starts out with Lilias learning that she wasn't going to marry the man that she had been betrothed to her entire life but a prince(hostage) from another kingdom, who is called the 'snake'. I think one of my favorite quotes from the book is "I love snakes." They are forced to marry, and figure out what is going on in the kingdom. Why they were married and why it happened so fast.... So many questions!
I really enjoyed how they were forced to marry but they both kind of tried to make the best out of it. Zarek, the snake, prince, assassin proves that he cares for her even through he doesn't want to. He tries to keep her protected by learning how to protect herself. I love that Lilas, knows so much about horses and that comes in handy for her. I love to see how she grows in this first book and will enjoy seeing how that extends to the next books. All the characters you really learn how to enjoy and care for them and you can help but want to root for them and see how everything plays out.
I really did enjoy being able to see or experience some of the kingdoms, more than just the ones that they are from. I am sure this world will only grow the more you get to know it! and I am looking forward on see how this book expands and develops.
This book was a slow burn and I really like that those. They take their time to get to know each other and it's not an instant fall in love situation. They have the chemistry and they both are holding back but for all good reasons. This story was a good start to what I really hope will be a wonderful series! A true romantasy slow burn! I am very intrigued to see how this book plays out and a looking for the next one!
Tropes: Arranged marriage Forced proximity Political intrigue He falls first… and harder Morally gray MMC They meet on their wedding day Sleeping in the same bed… but not touching Emotional support weapons Tension so thick you could cut it with a dagger
