A very funny story about a young boy and his seven sisters. The sisters have beautiful voices, but the boy can't sing. The sisters are bored with their brother and bring him to a home for difficult family members. Kukel runs a way and manages to make friends with the queen of the country, pretending he is her son and a prince. The queen tells him the story of her own life. It's sad, but at the end of the book the sisters are looking for their brother. They come to the castle where Kukel still stays with the queen who likes his company.

I love Joke van Leeuwen's books, and this one stands out for me, like "De Dag dat mijn Vader een struik werd". Character Kukel is very consistently written. His observations are funny, remarkable and the author plays with language in a way that doesn't distract you from the story. All lose ends are tied up at the end.
Brilliant kids book. (Seen through the eye of an adult)
