Sophia has booked the vacation of a lifetime. A week on a deserted island. Hoping for a retreat and recharge from her life in the middle of a Northwest winter, she sets out to enjoy seclusion and sun in paradise. Flying halfway around the world, Sophia boards the yacht chartered to take her to the secluded island in the Maldives. There she meets Lucas, a fellow vacationer. Tall, dark, and handsome, Lucas is a cowboy, misplaced in the tropics. Shunning Sophia’s attempt at friendship, Lucas keeps to himself until the two travelers are thrust into an unwelcome adventure. Sophia soon learns that Lucas may be her only hope for survival, and that paradise is not so easily reached.

After decades of experimenting in the 'real world', she finally gave in and followed her true passion. Author of 'Lady Sun', Marni lives in the beautiful Northwest with her husband. When she is not chasing one of her six sons around, she is stealing moments to hammer at the keyboard. Marni is currently working on her next novel; 'Nameless'.
Lots of 5 star reviews for this book, to read next is my plan. (Loved review for this by L.J. Shen) FREE today on amazon. 10/26/19 ************* 4.5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ So...so...good. I couldn't stop reading this book (literally). I just got super lucky here, I guess....stumbling across this book on goodreads as I had never heard of the author before now but as you can see fate must have been smiling down upon me with this wonderfully entertaining story. Yeah!!! It was an amazing adventure, filled with challenges, hope, heart and romance of course. I am really glad that I went into this book fairly blind to the full storyline as I think it made for much better reading that way... so I am not going to drop many hints about its content but I will say that I really loved the writing so very much, it was so descriptive and this story felt so very real. The build up was absolutely perfect. Lucas and Sophia❤ touched my heart with everything they endured together and I found myself smiling many times as I watched them interact with each other. They were both simply adorable.
What a wonderful surprise! At first, I thought, here we go again with the familiar story of two very different people meeting on a deserted island. Then the author captured me with the vivid character development of Sophia and Lucas and the imaginative way she brought conflict into their search for solitude and escape. The creative narration is a wonderful connector and it was hard to put this book down. Just a fun very enjoyable read that I heartily recommend!
There are so many things I loved about this story. I loved that it was compelling, touching, funny and yet angsty at the same time. I loved the rollercoaster romance, the anticipation, the different setting and the fact it was so, SO original. A thirty-something heroine, Sophia, who is a divorcee, a woman who knows who she is and what she wants from life. The drama of Sophia and Lucas' adventure (aww, I'm certainly not going to spoil that one for you, you'll have to read it for yourself!) kept me on edge and I literally found myself reading the whole novel in one sitting. I don't remember the last time it's happened to me. Lucas, by the way, was the perfect, mysterious alpha male.
In one word: Amazing! In a few words: You need to one-click it NOW!
I am on a very long string of not so good book picks. I have had way more 2 star reads these last few months then ever. I blame reading a lot of misc stuff from the TBR...veering off from my favorite one clicks!!!! I'm trying to give new authors(to me) some chances, but so far nothing has wowed me.
The reviews on this are pretty solid...although for an older book there really isn't that many. This book did not engage me at all. So many unnecessary details in the beginning and so much inner dialogue/thoughts with the main character I thought - this is borderline chic lit. I feel like I am always picking on the banter or chemistry - but hey that is important to me in a book!?!?! zero between these 2. I don't even remember their names. DNF @26%
Lady Sun, such a fun, witty, adventurous read. I love romance, especially, romance books that make me smile and laugh out loud. I also liked that I could never assume where the story was going right of the bat. Lady Sun kept me on my toes, wondering what was going to happen next.
Sophia and Lucas both take a tropical vacation to a far away island, both to escape the norm of everyday life for different reasons, but what awaits them is anything but what they planned for.
The two meet; Lucas, the handsome cowboy, drawn into himself and less than pleasant at first, and Sophia, the quirky, full of life woman on the vacation of her dreams, who tries to pull Cowboy out of his funk while the two are stuck together on a yacht that's suppose to be taking them to their very own remote island getaway.
Unfortunately, a run in with some pirates (and not of the Jonny Depp kind) turns their vacation into a mission of survival, and takes them on an adventure neither were planning on. Though their adventure is scary and unpredictable at times this story is kept light and fun with Sophia's easy going nature and hilarious inner monolog.
Can Sophia get Lucas to let some of those walls down? Will they survive the unforgivable conditions of Mother Nature and the unpredictability of the vast ocean surrounding them?
The author, Marni MacRae, has created a fun, adventurous read and manages to keep it romantic and humorous even when her characters face the extreme. She provided just enough detail and descriptive words to paint a picture in my head and make me feel as if I was right there with Sophia and Lucas, stuck in the middle of the ocean. This book kept me smiling throughout and rooting for these characters.
I really liked this book and look forward to reading more from Marni MacRae! I don't know what to compare this book to other than a mix between Bridget Jones and Wallbanger by Alice Clayton .
If you like romance mixed with adventure, this is the book for you! Sophia is a country girl (owns her own farm) who decides to get away from the Washington (state, not D.C.) winter with a vacation on an almost deserted tropical island. Pirates have other plans and take over the yacht sent to transport Sophia and another guest—a sexy Montana cowboy named Lucas— to the island. Thanks to Lucas, they make an escape on a small raft. Adrift for days, they find themselves attracted to each other and begin to fall in love. They survive sunburn, thirst, hunger, and a storm at sea, eventually ending up on an island that is truly deserted, not just “pretend” deserted like the tourist one they had been heading to.
The story of how they survive and fall deeper in love during the weeks they spend on the island is enchanting! Mixed in with the romance and adventure are tidbits of information about how to use aloe plants in lieu of antibiotics and how to make fuel from fruit—I googled and found the author knew what she was talking about with this and the other details of how they survived. I loved all the characters, but especially Sophia—I mean, how can you not love a character who has beer and premixed cocktails in her purse and a medicine kit in her suitcase when she finds herself lost at sea with a sexy cowboy! I alternated between laughing, googling information of interest, and tearing up while reading this book. Good going, Ms. MacRae! Looking forward to more from you!
Marni Macrae has graced us with a fresh take on an old story: girl meets boy, boy and girl get stranded on a deserted island, boy and girl fall in love.
Lucas is yummy in all his cowboy ways. I wasn't sure at first I would like him. But by the time they are overboard, he was my favorite character. Strong, capable, protective. He's the perfect man.
The book is written from Sophia's point of view. I'll admit it took me a little longer to fall in love with her than it did Lucas as she was a bit outgoing for me. But stripped away from her creature comforts and thrown into survival mode, she was calm and capable and incredibly strong.
The story itself was well-plotted. Fast paced, but not so much so that you miss out on the fun details of survival. The love story is sweet. The "romance" is chaste... hinted at rather than explained in detail. And the end was wholly satisfying.
Also, I walk away from it with a few tidbits of information. Like I really need to add some super glue to my emergency kit lol.
All in all, great story. I read it in two sittings, excited to get back to it when I put it down. It was a fun little vacation from real life.
Robinson Crusoe meets Sex and the City it was pure Pleasure to read this book. Despite the angst, drama and hardships the MCs facing, the plot is spiced up with so much humor, that the challenge becomes a funny adventure, and the reader is drawn into the special intimacy developing between Lucas and Sofia. The author has done a wonderful job writing this novel, its fluent, stylish, you getting tones of interesting information and lovely references, it keeps you intellectually stimulated throughout the read. I think that 'Lady Sun' fulfilling a fantasy that exists in every one of us, heart-melting romance under life-threatening situation, and deserted island as the setting, steaming hot. Another thing I liked is that even though the plot might sounds unrealistic, when you read it you realize how realistic it may be. It was a wonderful experience to read 'lady sun' and highly recommended it. I certainly will look forward reading more of this authorץ
I loved this book! It was well written and really fun to read. The characters are very likable. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a heartwarming story.
What an intriguing read. I became enmeshed in the story from the first page. The characters are compelling and the plot unique. The pacing is steady and kept me engaged throughout the story.
The Sophies’s character is so optimist, and she never gives up, remaining determined to find a way off the island. She is a true survivor. She’s a cheerleader and a team player.
Lucas is a hero one can love. He is also a survivor. Although he is standoffish when he first meets Sophie, when they are stranted on the island, he quickly goes into survival mode and works with the heroine to find a way off the island.
The romance between the couple is believable and entertaining. It’s easy to see why the couple fall in love. The love scenes are tasteful, focusing on the growing feelings between them more than the technical aspects of the act. That’s always a plus in my book.
If you are looking for a book with plenty of adventure and a satisfying romance, then you will enjoy Lady Sun as much as I did. This is the second book I’ve read by Ms. MacRae, and it will not be the last. I listened to the audio, and narrator is good, bringing life to the characters. Happy reading/listening!
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or my review in any way.
Five stars all the way! This is a totally unique romance novel with a twist. It's one of those books that'll be very sneaky and worm its way into your heart, and before you know it, you're in love!
This is a beautiful but tragic story. It's tragic, not because of how it ends, but because of the events that happen. It had me totally hooked! Whenever everything seems to be going right for Sophia and Lucas, their world gets turned upside down again. Seriously, there isn't a boring moment in this book. Better than that, it's all events you really can believe happened!
About the romance... I think it's beautiful that two people so sorely tried can find happiness together. They're literally fighting to survive - yet they manage to find love. Aww!! It's like one of those "love conquers all" stories.
I loved Sophia and Lucas as characters. We learn more about them as they're getting to know each other. I really liked that because it was a more natural way of getting to know the main characters. You can tell they're really strong characters because, even in the face of terrible and traumatic events, they still have a sense of humour! I love it when Sophia is going to look at the debris on an island and she calls it shopping! lol! Needless to say, I found them life-like and believable. I loved their backstories and I can honestly believe they're out there somewhere :)
The ending... *sigh* I can honestly say I never saw it coming (which in itself is rare). There are so many twists in the book that you would never guess how the story will end. Will they die? Will they survive? Will they settle down on the island or go back to civilisation? We just don't know! When I read the final page I was in tears, it really choked me up. I won't say anything about the ending except that it was fantastic :) It was well-rounded and covered any lingering questions I had about the story.
I'd definitely recommend this book to people who like romance, drama, and tragedy. If you like stories about survival you'll also like Lady Sun. I'm happy to say it's a new favourite of mine and it's one of those I'd buy a friend or family member for Christmas! :D
It’s a wonderful novel about two people trying to experience paradise. Both, Sophia and Lucas, have had bad divorces, Sophia calls her ex “the Snake”, I guess that says it all. Lucas’ ex is his ex because she got pregnant from another man.
When the two of them meet on the yacht, which is supposed to bring them to the vacation island in the Maldives, Sophia is instantly attracted. Lucas, who really booked this trip for his (ex)wife and himself, merely tries to consume 50% of the trip he could not cancel; plus he wants to be ‘out of town’ when his ex gives birth. But all plans change in an instant. Pirates capture the expensive vessel. Sophia and Lucas are no luxury tourists any longer but unwanted witnesses. They escape and more difficulties are coming their way.
Marci McRae tells the story from Sophia’s point of view. Sophia’s inner monologue is in part hysterical. I loved all her little thoughts and references to movies and books, Sophia has seen and read.
“… Best of all there was the now classic ‘Castaway’ where only Tom Hanks could make you cry over the loss of a volleyball. And I cried, I wept loudly, trying to hide it as I sat in the theater and Wilson drifted away… I loved that ball. All of America loved Wilson.”
Indeed, Sophia and Lucas make it to an island too but things don’t go that smooth. Even though they fall in love, one them gets sick and the other must save the day. But the adventure does not stop there. Finally rescued one of them disappears. Will they get a chance to experience real paradise?
Awesome chick-lit – inner monologues about shoes and packing, wraps, and how to prepare, in the end it will matter. This is a charming book.
This is a story I could not put down. It gripped me from the beginning. It is really a contemporary romance, although it’s listed under chick lit and fits well in that genre also. It is the story of a woman whose perfect vacation, in a deserted Pacific island, goes unexpectedly wrong.
I love the two main characters, both so strong and resourceful. I really liked the humorous bent to Sophia’s character and her eternal optimism. I love Lucas’s vulnerability and noble soul. I liked the way the author described each thing they did to survive, without it becoming over technical or boring. I also liked the simple, clear narration that makes the book such an easy, smooth read.
The story will keep you glued to the reading, and the ending will more than satisfy. Also, it is a romantic read but a clean one. The sexual content is not graphic and is tastefully done, emphasizing the emotional aspect. I highly recommend this novel.
I haven’t read many contemporary romances. I’m so glad that I gave Lady Sun by author Marni Macrae a chance. It was an enjoyable read right from the beginning. Sophie’s upbeat and sassy personality radiated off the pages.
The dialogue is realistic and full of humor. The right amount of sarcasm added so much fun for the ride. The plot abounds with surprises.
What completely hooked me and made me emotionally invested was spending time with Lucas and Sophie on a lifeboat after their fleeing from the pirates. The slow-build relationship that led to inevitable romance is plausible. The pair formed a unique bond and made love while struggling to overcome all sorts of obstacles in the tropical seas. The sweet romance became more and more delicious like a good glass of wine in a breezing summer time.
This is a tale full of surprises, pleasure, and you-are-there moments.
Highly recommend Lady Sun to fans of sweet, adventure romance!
What a fun and well written story! Sophia and Lucas, both escaping hard times, decide to take a trip to a deserted island. At the start, Sophia's adorable, outgoing personality clashes with Lucas's serious, somewhat mournful extra. After a series of exciting twists (no spoiler here!) they grow together in ways that I didn't expect. The narrator reminded me a bit of Bridget Jones with her eccentric little habits and charming personality. I loved following them on a tropical adventures. This book is really entertaining and holds your interest from the first to last page. Highly recommend.
This book was Castaway if it had been a romance novel with a combo of The Swiss family Robinson.
This debut novel of Marni MacRae's was exciting, sexy, romantic, and full of feels. And I absolutely loved it. I finished it in mere days...of course, I was on vacation while reading it so there's that ;-)
It follows the POV of spunky Sophia Canon as she sets sail from Washington state to the Maldives on the vacation of a lifetime. While taking the gorgeous yacht, Lady Sun to her island destination, she meets elusive and aloof, Lucas Lael, who at first glance seems to want nothing to do with her-or so she assumes.
Soon, these two are put into grave danger as pirates-and not the "glamorous" kind either-board the ship. From there, it's one adventure after another as these two become literal castaways and a sultry romance begins to develop early on.
I just adored Sophie. She stayed positive, cool and funny during their trials and tribulations. And Lucas, drool, he was the perfect Montana rancher. Did I mention that he's a cowboy? Yup, totally up my alley there! Marni described him so well. He was the perfect gentleman even during the most difficult of times. So swoon-worthy and was the yin to Sophie's yang. They were simply perfect together!
If you need a great suspenseful summer romance read, this is the one for you! It's truly got it all- suspense, action, drama, romance and adventure. Grab your copy now! You won't be disappointed!
I was very surprised with this book. The story was exciting and enjoyable. I found myself thinking about Sophia and Lucas and how were they going to survive. A luxury holiday tale with a massive twist. I loved this book and was really sad when I finished it. So glad it ended well.
First, let me preface this review by saying that romance novels are generally not my preferred genre. That being said, I'm glad I made an exception for Lady Sun by Marni MacRae, because this was a sweet, delicious little read.
Lady Sun launches into the thick of the story in chapter 1, with Sophia trapped in a cabin below deck by pirates who have hijacked her yacht. This is a very short chapter--very much like a prologue--to let the readers see the direction the novel is going. Chapter 2 then goes back in time to tell the readers how Sophie got to this point in the first place and to allow us to get to know her character. I personally loved the narration at this part of the story. Sophie's thought-stream is often long and rambling, but in an authentic and entertaining way. Sophia, overall, is a very lovable protagonist. She's an over-prepared control freak, but somehow manages to be outgoing and silly at the same time. There are times she can be obnoxious and her antics really make you giggle.
The story continues with Sophia preparing for her dream vacation, boarding the "Lady Sun" to her dream island, and then having a nightmare strike when pirates take over her yacht (as prefaced in chapter 1). Sophia and Lucas (a gorgeous and brooding cowboy-type) are forced to jump overboard at night to escape the pirate's evil intentions for Sophia. Relying on a yellow floating raft (aka: "Ducky") and a couple of suitcases for their survival, Sophia and Lucas must conquer--amongst other things--a treacherous sea, life-threatening injuries, starvation, dehydration, a hurricane, and Malaria if they hope to reach a happy ending. Meanwhile, both characters manage to maintain their senses of humor and keep the reader entertained with their constant carefree dialogue. Overall, I couldn't get enough of Sophia's and Lucas's world. Between bone-soaking rain storms and stunning sunsets, I felt swept away.
I knocked off .5 a star because of the novel's editing issues. The occasional capitalization/spelling error, comma misplacement, fragment and run-on sentence, etc., pulls away from the professionalism of the novel, but by no means impacts the readers overall enjoyment. I hope the author is able to obtain a professional editor soon, because her beautiful story deserves it.
In some ways this is your classic love story. Boy and girl must survive on a deserted island and end up finding love. And maybe this has been done somewhere before. But classic stories are classic for a reason--because they have a certain appeal that never tires. Mari MacRae's tale of blossoming love in a tropical and deadly paradise is told in a fresh voice and couldn't be more feel-good. The scenery of the islands sweeps you away into a world you never want to leave, and the characters are so full of heart. I was sad to reach the last page and have to forever say goodbye to "Castaway Island."
*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
It's the mark of a great story when you have to fight the urge, every step of the way, to flip to the end and see how it all turns out. And that's why I'm glad I read Lady Sun on a Kindle, because if this had been a softcover book in my hand, I surely would have done it. Yes, I suppose I could have done the same thing with my Kindle as well, but pushing a few buttons requires more mental energy than simply flicking one's wrist and exposing the last page of a softcover!
What a great story. Simply phenomenal.
Sophie Canon, a thirty-something divorced woman has lived the solitary life of a farmer, far away from the rat race of the big city. Following a bitter divorce from her Ex ("The Snake"), she decides to leave Western civilization behind, spending her savings on a journey to the Maldives, where she plans to do nothing but soak up the sun, partake of umbrella drinks and, to quote Billy Joel, "forget about life for a while." She no sooner arrives than she meets Lucas, a handsome cowboy from Montana who is fleeing his own private hell, a divorce from his unfaithful wife.
But both of them get a rude awakening when their trip to paradise is hijacked by modern-day pirates. Escaping at the first opportunity, Sophia and Lucas are soon cast adrift in tropical seas. And from there the pair must battle scorching heat, furious storms, and pretty much every roadblock Mother Nature can throw at them. The two total strangers must quickly learn to depend on each other for their survival, and the bond that they form is both heart-warming and gut-wrenching.
As I said, I wanted to flip to the last page almost right from the get-go to see if they would survive their ordeal and make it back to civilization, but I somehow resisted the temptation. Thank you, Kindle.
Marni MacRae's first-person writing style is fluid, classy, and descriptive. The emotions she draws out of you are both provocative and evocative, and you feel every single emotion that Sophia and Lucas must endure as they struggle to survive. By the end, I was as emotionally spent as if I'd undergone it with them, and that is all due to MacRae's brilliant writing.
I have not read many books as romantic or adventurous as Lady Sun, but I would recommend it to anyone whether they are fans of the genre or not. The book will fill your heart, rend it asunder, and then piece it together again. It is a great tale of the triumph of the human spirit, and of a love that almost defies description.
Lady Sun: A smart and sassy romance that gets taken for a ride ....
Because I saw on the author’s FB page that Lady Sun is currently undergoing an edit, my review here is of the story only, which I think is quite exceptional.
On the one hand, this is a light, enjoyable read. The brief prologue is well placed because I think it keeps the reader engaged over what (in the version I read) was a slightly bumpy beginning that didn’t communicate Sophia’s personality right away (Sophia is one of two main characters and is also the narrator). But only a short way in, when Sophia begins trying to engage Lucas (the second main character) in conversation, she leaps off the page as lovable, socially fearless, and endearingly bumbling. At that point, I laughed out loud at something she said and was completely hooked.
One major accomplishment of the novel is that across the remainder of the book, we slowly come to know these two characters much more deeply — both through their actions and what they reveal to one another. Neither Sophie nor Lucas is a stereotype. They are both painted quite well — and quite gradually — so that by the end of the book I almost expected to meet them somewhere. As a result, I came to truly care about them both.
But Lady Sun is an interesting read for another reason as well. I found that my experience of what happens to the two characters was colored by Sophia’s thinking as the first-person narrator. It’s no secret from the prologue that the trip to “paradise” the two characters embark upon (for very different reasons) goes terribly wrong. And yet, the dynamic of the positive relationship that develops between Sophia and Lucas counters that and kept me from taking these events as seriously as I should have — which is also what happens to Sophia. I don’t want to give spoilers, so I will just say that MacRae very slowly pulls back the curtain on the impact events have on her characters. As she does, Sophia slowly awakens from her love-induced delusions -- and I, too, realized I should have seen the likelihood of these effects from the beginning. Clearly, I didn’t want to! Love is a drug and we all want to relish its highs and vanquish its lows. As the book progresses toward its climax and denouement, I really worried about what was going to happen to these characters.
By taking the reader along on Sophia’s emotional ride, MacRae reveals a lot about our propensity for love and how it effects us. Her last line is my favorite in the book.
I want to start off by saying that I don't usually read this type of romance, so when I say that I loved this book, I say it because it truly was something captivatingly unique and beautiful.
Sophia has decided to take the holiday of a lifetime. She desperately craves the solitude of a deserted island, where she can partake in the age old act of reading whilst working on her tan in a state of mild tipsiness. Sophia has been divorced from her snake of an ex-husband for 2 years, he was a dick, a douche and all-round pain in the backside. Interestingly, Sophia is a bit of a hoarder, she carried everything in her Mary Poppins style handbag (thank god) on top of random handbag junk Sophia has a real penchant for cold-hard facts. The woman really is a walking Wikipedia!Being the great big nerd that I am, I googled some of Sophia's facts
Lucus is also a divorcee, only for the past 6 months though, so he is still very closed off and makes it pretty clear that he doesn't want or need Sophia's friendship. However, when he realises that pirates have taken charge of the yacht, he swoops in and manages to get them both off the boat and into a small dinghy. They're adrift at sea for days before being washed up onto land. They face lots of trials and hardships in their struggle to survive but somehow, our couple falls in love - yes there's a happy ever after in this book. My only gripe
This story felt familiar because of the many references to TV shows and movies. BUT it felt very ORIGINAL and incredibly refreshing. I love how the author has taken a tale that's been told before and put an entirely new spin on it. I was sucked in from the first chapter and was still greedily looking for more long after I closed my kindle.
Oh my God! I totally enjoyed reading this book. It was like a breath of fresh air. Funny, witty and amazing with likeable characters.
I'm on a boat with pirates and a cowboy. I felt like I was in a movie, waiting for my cue, for the director to yell “Cut.” It seemed all just too surreal.
Sophia was carefree, charming, quirky and strong. I loved how her inner-self would dream, think and hope, and how she was never ashamed to show what she was thinking.
It was distracting and beautiful, like watching a work of art or an opening scene to porn, I couldn’t decide.
If you think there's a damsel in distress in this story, think again. Sophia was able to pull her weight in helping Lucas, despite all the despair and desperation.
He stared at me like I was a curious animal he wanted to pet but wasn’t sure if I would bite.
What a thrill it was to find out that Lucas had a humorous side to him too. They way both of them would talk and imagine things only made the reading so lighthearted. I didn't even care that they were stranded because of the little make-believe world they had built on the island.
I loved the narration! It was funny and I have to admit that I laughed out loud in the office (sneaky me!). Marni MacRae manages to keep the book romantic and humorous, even when the characters were facing uncertainties. I was totally there on the island with Sophia and Lucas (invisible to them of course!). I smiled and smiled and smiled... oh, you get it! We all know that sometimes it's so easy to fall in love and that's what happens in the book. Looking forward to more witty-humorous-adventurous-romance stories from Ms MacRae. A highly recommended charming read!
I absolutely loved this book and it has become one of my personal favorites. It has everything. Great humor, an incredible heroine, a sexy hero (who is amazing!), suspense, and an unexcited sweetness that makes you all warm and fuzzy. This is the type of read that keeps you gripped until the very last page, and then run off to tell everyone you know to read it. I started reading, discovered it was midnight, decided I could squeeze in another hour and then was forced to put it down long enough to sleep (highly irritating) and the next day was inconvenienced with daily activates before I finally gave up on them and finished my book. First, what makes this story so amazing is the heroine, Sophia. She is a truly great character. Realistic, sarcastic, funny, and her optimism is refreshing. What was also refreshing? When she first meets Lucas. I laughed so many times during their first talk and loved Sophie’s inner thoughts, since us ladies after all, have very similar ones. Lucas is an amazing hero. Absolutely delicious and I don’t blame Sophie one bit for her thoughts around the man. The whole boat scene with them was one of the best female/male meetings I’ve ever read. The story had great plot twists, great underlined suspense and even moments where Sophie was so daft and clouded by enthusiasm that you want to tap her on the shoulder and remind her to pay attention, but it just adds to the realism. Definitely recommend and I’ll devour the next book this author releases just as quickly as I did this one.
This debut novel by Marni MacRae has it all – a quirky main character, a wild and crazy adventure, danger, fear, and of course love and romance.
Sophia is an independent divorced lady who owns a farm in the state of Washington. Sick of the long winters, she decides to take the trip of a lifetime and finds a deserted island in the Maldives where you can stay in a secluded hut. “This is for me!” she thinks. So she drains her savings account and packs her sundresses and bikinis against the sage advice of her family. After an excruciatingly long plane flight, she finally boards the Lady Sun, a fancy yacht that will take her to her final destination. There is only one other passenger aboard – a tall, good-looking man dressed like a cowboy. Sophia tries to make conversation with Lucas, but he is standoffish and clearly not interested. And then the pirates board the yacht. No spoilers here, but I will say that Sophia and Lucas begin a journey that will take them through hell and back over the next few weeks.
This book was a great read. Sophia has a silly side, but she is strong and intelligent, and well prepared for whatever comes her way (she has everything but the kitchen sink in her purse). She is able to see humor in even the most dire circumstances and keep her cool. Her budding relationship with Lucas is believable and sweet. This was a book I truly did not want to put down, and I can’t wait to read more from Marni MacRae.
Lady Sun is one of those books that you buy because you like the premise; and then it becomes a book that keeps you turning the pages because you like the plot, the characters, the suspense, and most of all, the fine writing. Sophia is looking to get toasted--in more ways than one--on a remote tropical island. On the way there, she meets Lucas, who at first seems aloof, and even rude. But when circumstances put them in life-threatening danger, they team up and unwittingly find themselves living a life that neither could have imagined. Cast upon a deserted island, they find that the joining of their equal strengths enables them to do much more than survive--they learn to love each other in the most life-affirming ways possible. I kept thinking they would be rescued early on, and the book would turn back to their "normal" lives, and we would be given the story of how their relationship survived on dry land. But Ms. MacRae, almost unbelievably, kept this story of survival and love among the ruins fresh, exhilarating, curious, and entertaining throughout.
At the 69% mark in my Kindle, I actually had the thought: I love these characters! I hope there is another book! I had not even finished, and I was thoroughly invested in their future. It takes a special kind of writer to do that for me, and Marnie MacRae is one of those writers.
I read this book as part of a review trade. Normally I don't read romance unless it's the secondary genre, but the adventure aspects of this book still sounded appealing. I thought, "Hey, why not?"
I did feel that the book could have used more editing when it came to typos, sentence structure, etc., but the plot still drew me in and kept me engaged. I've always enjoyed survival stories, so I was constantly wondering what would happen next and how the characters would get themselves out of the newest mess they'd fallen into! I thought the plot moved a little slow at first (after all, there's not really much you can do while stranded on a life raft) but it really started to pick up and get interesting around halfway through. All the Cast Away references made me laugh, and I now have this weird craving for seafood. The characters also seemed a little one-dimensional at first, but as the story progressed and we learned more about their back-stories, I really started to feel for them. Without giving anything away, I thought the last 15% or so was really well-done in terms of feeling what Sophia was feeling.
I still don't think romance is for me, but if you're a fan of the genre and also enjoy a good adventure/survival story, this book is for you.
Romance isn't exactly my genre of choice, but Lady Sun is not your typical romance.
I absolutely loved the characters. Sophia's narration was spunky and hilarious, and kept things light throughout most of the story. Lucas was splendid, a refreshing departure from the perfect, dashing love interests.
I particularly enjoyed the survival aspect to the story. It was very interesting to see how Lucas and Sophia made do with what they had (props to Sophia for being prepared!).
This was, for the most part, a light, fun read (except for a chapter or two in and near the end-that was stressful). The only gripe I had was that I didn't hear about the baby at all in the closing.
Please take this review lightly as this is not my typical genre nor is it an expertise of mine.
Lady Sun, for me, was hard to get into. It developed slow in the beginning, and I had to push myself to continue reading. However, after the initial struggle to keep myself reading, I'm glad I did. As the story progressed, I found myself turning the pages quickly to see what came next.
In the end, I really found myself having enjoyed the book and Sophia's "journey" to find her paradise. Both the author and the book have potential, and I cannot wait to see what Marni will come up with next.
I really liked this book. It was full of adventure and romance. It had good characterization and attention to detail. This author took the time to do her research and I really appreciate that. The narration and dialogue were smart and witty and I was fully engrossed while reading. This was a great book by a gifted author, and I can't wait to read more from her in the future.
