Gary Sinise is an American actor whose career has spanned stage, film, and television, alongside a long record of humanitarian work. He emerged from the Chicago theatre scene as a co-founder of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where he established himself as both actor and director. His early stage work, including his celebrated production of True West, drew national attention and led to notable Tony Award nominations for The Grapes of Wrath and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
Sinise made a strong impression in film with his performance as George Milton in Of Mice and Men, a project he also directed and produced. He earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Lieutenant Dan Taylor in Forrest Gump, a role that became one of the defining points of his screen career. He continued to work steadily in major films throughout the 1990s, including Apollo 13, Ransom, and The Green Mile.
On television, Sinise gained wide recognition for his Golden Globe-winning performance in Truman, his Emmy-winning portrayal in George Wallace, and later for his long-running lead role as Detective Mac Taylor on CSI: NY. He also starred as Jack Garrett in Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.
Beyond acting, Sinise has devoted significant energy to supporting veterans, service members, and first responders. Through the Gary Sinise Foundation, he has championed initiatives ranging from building smart homes for injured veterans to organizing worldwide morale events through the Lt. Dan Band. His dedication has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Presidential Citizens Medal.
Sinise remains active in artistic, philanthropic, and public service projects, maintaining a career defined by creative range, steady leadership, and a commitment to those who serve.
