I can understand why people love Maruko-chan, but that's as far as it gets.
I can't say I enjoyed reading it that much, I just found it boring and kept reading only because I had to.
There were for sure a couple of funny things about it but that's that.

Funny and lighthearted, I found myself transported back to my school days back home with these stories. Maruko-chan reminds me a bit of myself when I was younger, leaving summer homework until the very last day before school started, hating math and sports and just about every science class, being strategic about buying and eating snacks, etc etc. I could picture my own innocent, carefree childhood, reading other mangas like this. I know if I'd read this series as a kid, I would've loved it and collected every single volume.
Solid entertaining book, a good palate cleanser or something uplifting when you're needing a pick-me-up.

Chibi Maruko-chan ini aku cuma baca beberapa volume, itu pun kayaknya gak urut~
Tapi yang paling aku suka yang volume 1 ini (^,^)/
Cerita anak-2 jaman dulu, jadi pas diceritain model-2 permainan dan kondisi rumah & sekolah di masa itu menurutku menarik banget (^,,^)
Berantem sama kakak, siap-2 ikut piknik sekolah, semuanya cerita yang terasa hangat walau si Maruko tipe anak yang jutek (^,,^)
Gambarnya yang terkesan sederhana juga menyenangkan dilihatnya~

Very entertaining. The manga has so many tidbits inside, it makes you feel like opening small gifts one by one in apprehension.

It's slightly funny to be writing an English language review for a book I read in Japanese and that isn't actually formally available in English, but here we are. In fact, this was actually the first book I've read in Japanese purely for fun, rather than for a translation, and I greatly enjoyed it.
For a start, it's consistently adorable. The art is very cute, the characters are all endearing and Maruko herself provides a great window to get to know her world from. The world of Shizuoka prefecture in the Showa era is a very different one than the England of the late/early millennium I grew up in, but all the stories are told so fondly and engagingly that it made me feel nostalgic for a childhood I never had or could have had, so it's a huge success for that.
It's not just cute and nostalgic either of course, it's also very consistently funny. From stories like a somewhat embarrassingly low key children's Christmas party, a visit from younger cousins for a holiday, Maruko's distress at an upcoming marathon and so much more, I was regularly laughing throughout the book. Maruko's precociousness just brings a lot of laughs and sweetness together and it works wonderfully.
The bonus chapters without Maruko, taken from other autobiographical manga by the author, are a genuine bonus, too. Mostly a collection of one-off stories, with one two parter, they're just as funny, endearing and nostalgic as the actual Chibi Maruko-chan stories themselves and provide interesting, different perspectives as we get stories from other parts of Sakura's life, such as one about her visiting a disco as a teenager. The one about her being desperate to get a nosebleed as a child in this section is a real highlight as comedy goes!
This is a great, funny, heartwarming manga and it's a real shame it's never had an official English release. As it stands, though, it's a very good book to pick up for Japanese language learners, although it should be noted that it's quite wordy for a manga, so I'd recommend it for people who are a bit more confident in their Japanese, rather than total beginners.

Chị gái mình từng đặt nhạc chuông điện thoại là bài hát nhạc nền phim Maruko "pi chà rà pi chà ra ố la la la lá", chị gái mình có một chiếc áo phông trắng in hình Maruko, và chị ấy cũng từng đặt ảnh đại diện zalo là Maruko nữa. Mình đã được chị gái dẫn đường vào thế giới tuổi thơ của Maruko như thế ấy. Mình đã từng xem hoạt hình Maruko vào năm lớp 7, nhưng cho đến năm lớp 10 mình mới bắt đầu đọc truyện (tại vì đến lúc ấy Kim Đồng mới tái bản bộ truyện này, nghe tin truyện được tái bản thì mình hào hứng chờ đến ngày ra Fahasa tậu ngay em nó về nhà đọc). Có lẽ 16 là một độ tuổi hơi muộn để đọc Maruko vì nội dung truyện nghe có vẻ quá trong sáng cho lứa tuổi thanh thiếu niên =)), và truyện cũng không nổi với những bạn đồng trang lứa của mình lắm. Nhưng mình cực kỳ thích Maruko (ngoại trừ việc giá tiền một tập em nó hơi chát thì mình tình nguyện sưu tầm hết cả bộ truyện). Maruko, một cô bé lớp 3 có cái đầu tròn, và bộ tóc bấm chỉ được vẽ đến nửa đầu, nghĩ thì dị nhưng lại đáng yêu đến kì lạ. Mỗi chương truyện lại là một câu chuyện riêng lẻ tách biệt, thường là về cuộc sống của cô bé Maruko hoặc về chính cuộc đời của tác giả Momoko. Nội dung truyện đơn giản, nhưng đọc từng con chữ, ngắm từng nét vẽ lại nhận ra cái vẻ ấm áp, chan chứa tình cảm của tác giả ủ ấp vào trong ấy. Tình huống truyện có lẽ chẳng có gì đặc biệt, nhưng càng đọc mình lại càng cảm giác thân thuộc, tựa như mình vừa được đưa trở lại những ngày còn thơ ấu vậy. Những trang viết tâm tình của tác giả, một người viết truyện trẻ em nhưng lại vô cùng trải đời, luôn khiến mình hồi tưởng về quá khứ, đồng thời lại tò mò về tương lai của bản thân sẽ như thế nào. Có lẽ, Maruko không chỉ đơn thuần là bộ truyện tranh dành cho lứa tuổi thiếu nhi. Ai ai, dù ở bất kì độ tuổi nào, cũng có thể yêu thích, ngấu nghiến đọc từng trang truyện, và cảm thấy ấm lòng.

Tellement drôle. Ce manga retrace plusieurs passages dans le vie d’une fille, à plusieurs étapes différentes de son enfance et avec beaucoup d’humour. Cette autrice née dans les années 60, nous offre son intimité familiale, avec ses parents, ses grands-parents et sa sœur. Une autre génération, un quotidien unique au cœur du Japon des années 70. Je recommande.

"Chibi Maruko-Chan" is a popular beloved Japanese manga about a 9 year old girl and her daily life. Now, at first I couldn't understand any of it. But thankfully, I used ChatGPT to translate it. Really great manga. I also gave this one to my 9 year old daughter. The main character Maruko reminded me a lot of my daughter!

Quand on parle de titre emblématique dans la construction du shojo manga, je suis toujours au rendez-vous. Ainsi, j’ai été ravie de la licence de Maruko-chan chez nous, ce titre tranche de vie qui est au shojo ce que Shin-chan est au shonen. J’étais donc très curieuse.
Écrit à la fin des années 80, Maruko-chan est un shojo tranche de vie où l’autrice s’inspire de sa propre enfance pour raconter le quotidien d’une petite écolière japonaise dans une ambiance gentiment rétro pour nous mais parfaitement actuelle à l’époque. A l’aide d’une narration simple et claire, elle s’adresse ainsi au jeune public pour qu’il se reconnaisse dans ce que va vivre son héroïne et c’est charmant.
Le dessin est cependant des plus simples, tout comme la narration. On est vraiment sur un mode comic strip assez naïf, qui a son charme, mais qui ne me donne pas forcément envie d’y revenir, en tout cas pas pour les dessins. La narration est basique aussi, sans grande inventivité dans la construction des planches, alors que je suis assez friande de cela, mais en même temps, peut-être que le titre s’y prête peu.
Celui-ci est résolument tranche de vie. Il nous plonge de plein pied dans le quotidien de cette fillette, cadette de la fratrie, qui est un peu fainéante et roublarde sur les bords. Elle décrit à merveille ses relations avec sa mère, sa soeur ou encore son grand-père. Elle nous emmène avec elle sur les bancs de l’école ou dans les rues de sa petite ville. C’est un quotidien qu’on apprend à savourer avec malice grâce au regard qu’elle pose dessus et aux aventures qu’il lui arrive, un peu comme dans Simple comme l’amour mais sans le côté sentimental. Ça parle ainsi des rôles des enfants à l’école, de leurs tâches lorsqu’il faut s’occuper des animaux, d’une plante ou de leurs devoirs de vacances. On découvre comment ils doivent participer à des courses hors de l’école ou accueillir leurs parents une fois par an, etc. Classique mais mignon.
L’intérêt de la série vient vraiment de ce qu’il y a entre les lignes, c’est-à-dire le portrait d’une époque par une autrice qui l’a vécue avec ses propres anecdotes. D’ailleurs les blablas de celle-ci en fin de chapitre où elle raconte sa vie et notamment ses relations avec d’autres mangakas sont savoureux, vraiment ! Mais est-ce suffisant pour me donner envie de continuer sur 18 tomes ? Clairement, non. J’ai été contente d’en avoir un aperçu, mais ça ne suffit.
Titre cultissime au Japon qu’on est ravi de pouvoir découvrir en France, je me demande quand même qu’elle sera sa vie chez nous, tant le contenu est marqué. C’est un tranche de vie rétro (pour nous) et humoristique qui amuse grâce au caractère léger et à contre-courant de l’héroïne, mais c’est également un quotidien lambda sans grand relief qui peut lasser sur 18 tomes, je pense. A voir.
Je me demande donc : en dehors du côté patrimonial, y a-t-il un intérêt à le publier, et ce alors que pleins de titres bien plus riches ne demandent qu’à (re)venir chez nous comme 7Seeds ou Princesse Kaguya dont le contenu est bien plus intéressant ? T.T
