This book has became my ultimate whimsical light fantasy academia read. Any future book in this genre is going to be compared to this for the level of sheer joy it brought me.
This is fun, cozy and cute. With older MC's, chaos and strong friendship, this book just wraps you in it's arms and says "there there, let's have some fun." And fun you shall have.
Having the story being told from the perspective of the teachers was such a fun twist on normal academia books, and seeing how they all were so devoted to their subject and their students, yet also exhausted by them and very aware of their failings, was a real treat.
Foxglove, Thistledown and Belladonnas friendship was so fun and I loved how unique all their personalities were to each other. They complimented each other perfectly and when you add in the chaos duo boys, it was just a full trump deck of delight.
The students played a great background roll in the book, and seeing how both terrified and in awe of their professors they were was great, especially as so much of this book was subverting the usual genre specific things.
Cannot wait to see more from these guys because it is a chaos crew I am in love with!

This was such a fun cosy fantasy. It definitely gave me reverse Harry Potter vibes, where the teacher is the chosen one and we follow her and her teacher friends.
Professor Foxglove should be careful what she wishes for 😂 I absolutely loved her character. She’s very funny and completely in denial. Her friendship with Belladonna and Thistledown is fun and wholesome and they make a very quirky trio.
I absolutely loved the sentient plants too. So many different varieties with their own personalities.
The author has created a rich magical world, it’s creative, easy to read and kept me entertained throughout. I loved it and recommend it to all cosy fantasy fans.
Overall, I rate this 4.5⭐️

A story that follows professors of the magic school, Grimswell Academy, as they desperately try to navigate prophecies, unruly magic and all the biggest Eldritch horror of them all, a school field trip.

Fatal Consequences of Botanical Interference paints the best picture of what makes these teachers from our memories great: a perfect blend of undeniable love for their subject and craft mixed with wonderfully, chaotic quirkiness.
𓋼 Vesper Foxglove, the Head of the Herbological Arts, makes this whole entire book. I’m obsessed with her and her dry sense of humour. She is a no-nonsense professor who is desperate to avoid any and all excitement, opting to live happily with her wayward plants. She is the reluctant ‘Chosen One’, but she takes it in her stride for the good of her students. I loved the representation in this book so much, a lesbian Herbology professor?? Sign me all the way up!
𓋼 Friendship is a huge theme in this book. Foxglove, Bella and Thistle are ingrained in my brain. I wish I could have been right there, living this adventure alongside them. Thistle is who I want to be when I grow up! She is the type of person to turn a situation around by manipulating someone with an astrological interpretation and a rose quartz bracelet, like it’s nothing. Bella was the cool, calm and collected best friend of our dreams. She is steadfast and supportive, absolutely someone you would want in your corner. Everything she does is effortless, there is no limit to the things she can do. I so desperately want to know more about her and what she’s been through to become the graceful and immensely intelligent Head of Alchemical Arts.
𓋼 Gallows and Morthain were great surprises as well. Dark and brooding friends of Charms and the Dark Arts. They come across as snippy and arrogant but one way or another, they were eager to join the pandemonium of taking several teens into the dangerous Magical Wilds, (otherwise known as a class field trip). I don’t want to spoil it, but whatever was going on with Morthain was so incredibly amusing. I loved whatever was wrong with him the entire adventure.
𓋼 Don’t even get me started on the Sporelings! You couldn’t have a better mascot for this entire journey. They are sweet, they are mischievous and they are my newest obsession. It isn’t a want, it’s a need to have these in my life. I could keep them in my pocket at all times like Foxglove, despite their “ambient mischief and recreational hallucinations.” They made this story so much more silly and whimsical, two things I actively need to survive.
𓋼 This was fun and so damn charming, I had the best time ever. It was a book that didn’t overstay its welcome, even though I am sad it’s over, but it was the perfect length. It was full of hilarious calamity and heartwarming moments. If you ever find yourself feeling down and in need of a magical cheering up, this is a book you don’t want to miss.

What happens when the herbology teacher is the Chosen One? Find out in Fatal Consequences of Botanical Interference!
Vesper Foxglove loves her job. Not only does she get to teach the next generation of Witches and Wizards about magical plants - she is in charge of the school greenhouses and the many potent species within.
When a Prophecy Bloom appears in front of one of her students, Foxglove follows her instincts and pulls her student away from danger…and unwittingly steals the role of Chosen One destined for her student. But what use is a Chosen One if there is no Dark One to fight?
With the help of her fellow teachers, Foxglove must embark on a field trip to fix her mistake and hopefully return destiny - and any students caught in the crossfire - back to normal.
This was SO much fun. I had to stop and keep reading quotes to my family because I was laughing so much. Written with an understated sense of humour that is so very British, it takes the magic academy idea but uses the teachers as the main characters.
This book is NOT a romance. In fact, one of my favourite moments was when one of the Wizards is on the verge of writing sonnets for Foxglove and the other teachers point out he has the wrong parts for her to be attracted to him.
There are not many potential triggers in the book, but there are plenty of outrageous magical moments and teens being teens.
If you want a wonderful, highly entertaining fantasy novel without the romance, I cannot recommend Fatal Consequences enough.

I had such a wonderful time with this book. Huge thank you to the author for the PR box and the chance to read this early — and wow, it absolutely did not disappoint. This is now the third book I’ve read by H. R. Leigh, and every single time I’m reminded how incredible her worldbuilding and storytelling are. Her writing is creative, comforting, chaotic in the best way, and genuinely funny.
One of my favourite things about Fatal Consequences of Botanical Interference was the older protagonist. Don’t get me wrong, I will always love a deadly teenage assassin saving the world, but there was something so refreshing about following characters who feel a little more lived in. Foxglove is cautious, tired, sarcastic, and desperately trying to survive the absolute chaos unfolding around her. Watching her slowly learn to roll with the punches alongside her two best friends made this adventure feel both hilarious and heartfelt.
And honestly? This really is a school trip from hell.
After a prophecy flower 🌼 starts calling Foxglove out, she suddenly finds herself tangled in something much bigger than she ever wanted. The dynamic between the characters absolutely carried this story for me. The friendships felt warm and believable, full of the kind of banter and support that makes you wish you could join their disaster of an adventure.
Now I NEED to talk about the spores. 🍄These tiny little chaos creatures completely stole my heart. They’re mischievous, adorable, and somehow manage to add both humour and charm to the story without taking away from the plot. I refuse to say too much because discovering them yourself is part of the fun, but I loved every moment they appeared on the page. 🍄
This book has the cosy warmth that makes you want to curl up for hours, while still delivering mystery, magic, danger, and genuinely funny moments throughout. It feels whimsical and chaotic while still carrying emotional depth underneath it all.

I cannot tell you how long I have waited to get my grubby mitts on this book...and it did not disappoint. It was whimsical, it was nostalgic, it was hilarious, I often found myself laughing out loud.
While my only sadness with it, was that it was over too soon, that does not warrant-for me-a star deducted, but is more of a testament to how delightful it was.
I loved all of the characters, but-evil nature spirit to my head-I would have to say, I LOVED Thistle, with Morthain a very close second.
The illustrations add a delicious indulgence to the story, that I don’t feel we have enough of in adult literature, and I adore Hannah’s art, so more please!
It had an excellent balance of adventure, satire and fun. It was fast paced, but engaging, and i loved all of the shenanigans the professors and students ended up in.
(mostly the professors).
Hannah is a truly talented story teller, with this being her third publication and very different to her other works. Her range is exceptional and her way of story telling weaves straight to your heart. I have added this cast of characters into my mind, along with Serene, Caius, Theo and Eli!
I absolutely cannot wait to see what comes next from Hannah!!

This is the kind of writing that HR. Leigh excels at. Cosy, warm hugs from a book with connection. (if you haven't read her Labyrinth City debut, honestly you should!)
There's a whole host of fantasy out there where you get to be young, idealistic, fighting for the good, and I LOVE IT! But there is a lot to be said about connecting with a character on the day to day level where you're a bit damn tired, you're constantly lumbered with dolts and dimwits, and your work mates are the only thing keeping you sane.
The mystery of Bella, the eccentric delight of Thistle, and the utter familiarity of Foxy just wanting a normal 5 minutes of peace... That could be my work crew.
Now we get to go on an adventure and untangle some nonsense in a magical way? What do you mean there's a slight chance of being turned into poultry? Heck yes I'm in!
I confess, Morthain might be my favourite character. I think you'll enjoy him too. Poor guy.
Finally, sporelings! Cute, squishy, fungi friends. I love them. No matter what.
Bonus shout out to the author's illustrations. What an extra delight!

This was a very fun, cozy and humorous read. I really enjoyed its lightheartedness and ease, and it really very much feels like a cozy fantasy as you’re reading it. The characters were amusing and diverse, they all had distinct personalities and quirks that set them apart, including the more minor characters of the students - I kind of wish we’d gotten a little more backstory for some of them or maybe like some more context around their work as I found the snippets really interesting. The plot was short but sweet, and didn’t feel like it was missing anything really, the premise of a magical school is always a winner, add in prophecies and mischievous little mushrooms and you’ve got a great combination!
The epilogue feels like it’s hinting at another story, and I’d be excited to read one! Especially with the little hints it’s left towards the end, I’d love to see a continuation with these characters and the school setting.

3.75 ⭐️ This book was such a fun read. I loved the entire plot, and the dark‑academia vibes mixed with all the plant‑related magic gave me major Harry Potter energy in the best way. The humour was honestly some of the best I’ve ever come across I actually laughed out loud more than once. The whole idea of taking students on a field trip that was both dangerous and completely ridiculous made the story feel delightfully absurd and genuinely entertaining.
My only real critique is that it felt too short. I wanted more time in the school, more moments with the students, and more space for their friendships to grow as the story unfolded. The world and characters were so fun that I just wished the book lingered with them a little longer.
Overall, though, it was a really enjoyable read with great vibes, great humour, and a world I would happily spend more time in.

I absolutely loved every single second of this book! The cosy, magical, academia setting is written so well and it is so easy to engage with and follow along. I loved that we experienced the story from the mindset of the teachers as that made for a very refreshing read compared to the usual academia settings. The side characters were just as great as the main character and I have fallen in love with the Sporeling’s entirely ❤️ There were plenty of moments that had me laughing throughout this story, the banter and wit is incredible. This world is definitely one that you can fully immerse yourself in to and enjoy every moment.
Overall this is a very gripping, engaging, cosy fantasy story.. one where you can just sit down in the sun with a cuppa and just let yourself disappear in to a cosy world for a while 💚🍄

H. R. Leigh is a literary wizard themselves. No matter the genre or subject, she always delivers a performance from within her pages. Everything is so methodical and well thought out; the plot flows flawlessly. Her previous works have been some of my favourite reads, and Fatal Consequences of Botanical Interference joins the hall of fame alongside them.

FCOBI is fascinating. Leigh tells you everything, and yet you're still left guessing what will happen, lost to the magic of the story.
What can only be described as quintessentially British attitude, the cast of characters are tired of bureaucracy, fate, and others attitudes. This leads to extraordinary witt and dry humour, which add to the wonderful cosy cottage core vibes. The lecturers are absolutely fabulous, I can't decide what I want more; my teachers to have been like this at school or to have gone into teaching to be this kind of teacher.
The descriptions, scene setting, and style of world building is cosy and warm. It almost feels like Leigh has captured the feel of rose tinted glasses and turned it into something tangible on the page.

FCOBI is fascinating. Leigh tells you everything, and yet you're still left guessing what will happen, lost to the magic of the story.
What can only be described as quintessentially British attitude, the cast of characters are tired of bureaucracy, fate, and others attitudes. This leads to extraordinary witt and dry humour, which add to the wonderful cosy cottage core vibes. The lecturers are absolutely fabulous, I can't decide what I want more; my teachers to have been like this at school or to have gone into teaching to be this kind of teacher.
The descriptions, scene setting, and style of world building is cosy and warm. It almost feels like Leigh has captured the feel of rose tinted glasses and turned it into something tangible on the page.

Fatal Consequences of Botanical Interference by H.R Leigh ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Magical mayhem, a chaotic school trip, and told from the professors perspective! And who could forget the magic mushrooms! What more could you possibly want! An easy read that was more than relatable with typically British humour, magical academia but from a perspective we never get in stories like this making it much more relatable! Also completely illustrated by @hanns_pov herself, because there is no end to her talents! I am beyond proud of you @hanns_pov!

Let me just say, I love the trope of the reluctant adult as the chosen one. And I love reading about a group of adults or older getting up to shenanigans. So let me tell you this book delivered on both fronts. It's so much fun to read!
The characters are what really made this book so good for me. Yes, they can be a little on the nose with their names (Belladonna for a potioner), but hey, that's part of the charm!
This book is whimsical, lighthearted, and just feels like a hug. The perfect read on a beautiful day outside.

I thoroughly enjoyed this whimsical story!
H.R. Leigh had me chuckling from the very first page and I was instantly hooked by both the premise and the narrative tone and voice. The entire book was hilarious and so imaginative. Not to mention the adorable Sporelings! It gave me Harry Potter vibes but with grownups and more humor and I am here for it! I can't wait to read more by H.R. Leigh!

The ultimate lighthearted magical fantasy I've ever read! 💫
The storyline was whimsical with illustrations included on its pages, such colourful and vivid descriptions of some scenes. It's so cosy and charming yet also chaotic and twisted at the same time - a nice balance throughout. It was fast-paced and very engaging too.
With the main characters coming from the older generation, it made the book sooo relatable, funny, and delightfully quirky. The genuine female friendship was also the main highlight and I am loving every bit of it. I was laughing out loud and sometimes, I kept catching myself grinning from ear to ear from all the hilarious interactions and sassy exchanges.
I had the very best time reading this incredibly heartwarming novel few weeks ago! It's the type of magical academy and adventure I never thought I needed in my life. *chef's kiss* So... if you also want an entertaining fantasy that will give you a marvellous time, please do not miss this one out! I absolutely loved this! Such a lovely read, amazing world building and I really connected with some of the characters! I just hope it becomes a series and isn’t a stand alone book! For fans of the Harry Potter universe, this is perfect!
