As a child, I used to hate all things book. This continued for years as I utterly refused to read or write anything. Then while I was 15 tragedy befell my family and my mother passed away. She used to read me and my little brother a book but didn't finish it before she passed. Wishing to be closed to her I finished it myself. Thus started my love of reading, and from that grew my love of writing. For 13 years I struggled with my first book until it was ready, with the encouragement and help from friends, family and authors alike. I did the impossible. I finished and published my debut novel, Bloodborn: A Kate Carter Story
Now I spend my free time putting these squiggly lines known as writing, onto paper to prepare for my next release!
I was hooked right from the start! The story had me intrigued, and Kate Carter immediately drew me in with her dry wit and “I don’t give a damn” attitude. But underneath all that indifference, there seems to be a lot of unresolved trauma and loss. She strikes me as someone who wants connection but has learned to bury her feelings rather than risk getting close to people, especially when immortality means watching the people you love disappear. I found that aspect of her character really interesting.
The second half felt a little too action-packed for me, and I struggled at times to keep up with everything happening. I was also confused about the Liz character. After getting an entire chapter from her POV and seeing her brought into Kate’s world, I expected her to play a bigger role in the story. I was left wondering what her significance was and where that storyline was headed.
That said, I liked the setup for the next book and am excited to see what comes next for Kate and the little team she’s inadvertently assembled. Kate clearly has a hard time trusting people or letting them in, so I’d love to see her people give her more reason to trust them. I want to see them fight for her more and go after her when she pushes them away, and to see Kate let them into her plans. There also seemed to be the beginnings of something interesting between Kate and Mortis, and I can’t wait to see where that goes.
The narration by Kathryn McKinney was spot on! She absolutely nailed Kate’s deadpan delivery and dry wit. The little chuckles, vocal nuances, layered voices, and subtle effects added so much personality and made the performance feel natural and immersive. It really pulled me into the story and brought the characters to life.
Overall, the story had me invested, and I’m definitely curious to see where Kate’s journey goes next. I’d happily listen to Kathryn narrate the next installment!

Bloodborne throws you straight into a huge modern-day urban fantasy world filled with vampires, fae, supers and all manner of unique creatures. The world-building is detailed and there's clearly a much larger world waiting to be explored. Kate is a very likeable protagonist, you completely get behind! She's incredibly powerful but still flawed, mentally strong but struggling with her own demons, and underneath all the badassery she has a huge heart. She's also wonderfully witty, and the humour throughout the book was a lot of fun. Mortis was an absolute badass, and I'm already very interested to see where things go with Kira! The story is intense and there's always something happening, with plenty of action and some great character development along the way. I particularly enjoyed the modern-day England setting and the darker urban fantasy atmosphere. The only thing for me was the pacing. There were so many ideas, locations and plot threads that occasionally I felt like I was being thrown from one thing to the next before I'd had a chance to fully settle into the previous one. I would have loved a little more time to develop the relationships, build the stakes and let some of the bigger moments breathe. That said, this is a very promising debut. Brandon has created a huge world with a lot of potential, and I'm genuinely curious to see how both the world and his writing develop in future books. Definitely an author to watch out for! 👏
What a world to be pulled into dark fantasy, with elements of horror and plenty of action to keep you routing for Kate from start to finish.
She maybe immortal and a killer with hidden depths but her biggest flaw is her lack of trust in those she surrounds herself with, and rightly so because there's a long list of people and supers alike that would like nothing more than for Kate to just disappear.
What I enjoyed most about her journey throughout this book was her ability to finally recognise that a change was needed, she may be fierce and feared by others but trust is required if she's going to defeat the unknown powers that are making themselves known and disappearing other supers in the city.
Would I have liked book two to be ready of course I would purely for how invested I am with the outcome, seeing Kate come out on top. That being said knowing how long it has taken the author to produce this book I'm more than happy to wait because the writing style, detail, characters and world building was worth the wait.
This is a dark and immersive urban fantasy that blends horror, mystery, and action into a gripping narrative. The idea of Kate as the world’s first vampire adds a powerful edge to the story, especially with the weight of centuries behind her character.
What stands out is the atmosphere, the sense of danger, shifting alliances, and the unknown lurking beneath the surface of the city. The plot pulls you in with its mix of cryptic messages, disappearing supers, and supernatural conflicts, all while exploring Kate’s internal struggle and isolation.
Her reluctance to trust others adds an interesting layer to the story, making her journey feel both intense and personal. It is a compelling read for anyone who enjoys darker urban fantasy with strong, complex characters.
