The itinerary for girls' weekend in Las Vegas was simple. Gamble. Get drunk. Wear a little black dress that screamed "newly single and ready to make bad decisions." That bad—yet oh so very good decision—came when Maddox Gallagher walked into the bar. In my defense, it was hard to resist the younger football player. Between the dimple in his cheek and the way he held me when we danced, I was a goner. Add in the fact that he was celebrating a championship trophy and I was toasting to no longer being married, we were a match made in one-night-of-fun heaven. But what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, right? Whoever said that was a liar. Because tell me why my one-night stand is now walking into my bakery, bound and determined to turn our one night into something more. And why did I bring home a souvenir that won't get here for nine months and also not have a return policy? This isn't how the new chapter of my life was supposed to start. I wanted to be my own person. Own the bakery I've always dreamed of. Travel. Date and see what the world had to offer. Not fight off feelings for the football player who's turning my world upside down and painting a nursery in the process, wondering if he's really my forever. Because he, and this baby, might've been unplanned, but I'm now wondering if this is exactly what the itinerary was supposed to be all along.

This had all the ingredients for a fun read and it delivered.
As a first read from this author, it definitely won’t be my last. I don’t usually go for accidental pregnancy stories, but this one worked so well for me, balancing a little chaos with so much heart.
Maddox and Gabi were incredibly easy to root for. He may be younger, but he’s so sure of himself, soft where it counts and completely devoted once he knows what he wants. Gabi felt so real, especially as she navigates life after a long marriage and slowly rebuilds her confidence. Their connection felt natural, the chemistry delivered, and I loved how the age gap never overshadowed what they had.
The side characters brought in so much charm and humor, and the whole story carried this comforting, feel good energy even with its unexpected turns. It was sweet, a little messy, and quietly emotional in all the right places.
Definitely one of those reads that just leaves you happy.

Huge thank you to Chelle Sloane & The Smuthood for the ARC! 😍 All my bookish thoughts are completely my own. ✨
Gabi was having a crazy girls night out in Vegas to celebrate being a freshly divorced woman. At the same time, football player Maddox was celebrating his team's championship win. But Vegas was pretty dangerous when partying too much. Why? Because some unexpected things could happen. And that was exactly what happened to Gabi and Maddox.🤭 They had an instant connection which lead to an unbelievable one night stand. But that will be transforming into so much more, especially because of how fast Maddox fell for Gabi. The recent divorce left a bitter taste in Gabi's heart and she was definitely not thinking about starting something new that soon after her separation, but could she ignore young Maddox and the unexpected situation they found themselves in with an accidental pregnancy?
Ohh, how cute this story was!! I was instantly charmed by swoony Maddox, who was simply incredible with Gabi. He was the most fun, thoughtful and sweetest man and all those have even stolen Gabi's attention. I loved how persistent he was and not forcing anything on Gabi, knowing that she was still in a fragile state after her divorce. There was a reversed age gap between them, being an eleven years gap, but that didn't matter at all because they fitted together so darn well! I simply loved their sweet and sometimes super steamy relationship, one which often made me smile, because of the amazing football player which was such a cinnamon roll and made it so easy to get swooned by him.
Even if you're a fan of age gap stories or not, I think that this one will definitely won you over! I definitely didn't feel that difference between the characters and I really liked that connection which was created between them and also with the secondary ones. Cute, fun and a pretty relaxing, but steamy read.🤭
Thank you so much Chelle and The Smuthood for accepting me for this e-ARC. 🤗

Newly divorced baker Gabi is on her last night in Las Vegas celebrating her hard-fought divorce with her two besties when she literally dances up to a super hot, decade younger NFL player while he’s at the karaoke mic celebrating his team’s championship. They have an instant connection, and a great fling to conclude her lost weekend. Although she slides out the next morning without waking him or exchanging information, fate intervenes and he becomes a permanent fixture in her bakery and eventually her heart.
Disappointed the woman of his dreams slipped away from him after their magical night together, Maddox decides to spend his off season trying to woo her when he finds they live in the same hometown of Nashville, even if it’s only to be her friend. A host of friends in common intercede to help the pair remain in each other’s orbit, and a permanent souvenir from Vegas makes itself known.
Another steamy and heartfelt romance from the always terrific Chelle Sloan, I enjoyed Gabi and Maddox’s reverse age gap love story.
I was generously provided an advance reader copy from the author and #thesmuthood, and I’m pleased to share my honest review.
If there is no one shouting about Chelle Sloan's books, it's because I'm dead! I loved this one so much, and I'm just so floored by how her books are always so good and so much fun! Gabi was so much fun, and I loved getting to watch as she pushed and fought for the life she wanted as she found herself again! Her path in healing from her past was so incredible to watch, and I loved how steady and supportive Maddox was in that journey! Plus Maddox was just EVERYTHING!! He may be one of my favorite MMC's from Chelle!! His steady devotion to Gabi and his perfect response to the twists and turns was just absolute perfect!! I loved getting to watch him navigate all the changes in their path, and step up to be the best version of himself! Plus the entire cast of characters we meet (and revisit, Hi Ainsley!!) were just perfection!! Overall this book was just amazing, and I would love if Chelle could just inject her books into my veins! I cannot wait for the next book!! 4.75 stars; 3.75 chili peppers

Ok this by far was my favorite book from Chelle Sloan plus I’m a sucker for a unplanned pregnancy trope
Gabi newly divorced and determined to rebuild her life after losing herself in a marriage that chipped away her identity she’s refocused on her bakery and her independence. But a much younger football player and an unexpected pregnancy was definitely not part of her plan. Maddox Gallagher is the real definition of a golden retriever hero with a confidence edge. When he meets gabi he’s all in and I definitely loved how he didn’t back down. He’s patient and supportive and definitely gives gabi the space she needs but still shows her she’s worthy of being loved and treated right. The chemistry between was sizzling and I loved how the tension naturally builds up their relationship. The unexpected pregnancy trope was definitely my favorite. It didn’t feel forced or rushed it just added another layer to their story. I absolutely enjoyed this book and can’t wait for more in the series!!
What happens in Vegas definitely did NOT stay in Vegas, and we are SO here for it! 🎰✨
One wild girls’ weekend + one impossibly charming football player = the best “unplanned” romance you’ll read all year. 🏈💕 Our girl had plans, people. Big, beautiful, post-divorce plans. And then Maddox Gallagher walked in with that smile and blew every single one of them up. 😍💥
Speaking of Maddox — can we talk about how CUTE he is?! Like, embarrassingly, unfairly, put-the-book-down-and-scream cute. 🫠 He is the whole entire package and Chelle Sloan had absolutely no right making him this swoony.
Funny, heartwarming, and impossible to put down. Unplanned Play is the happy little accident your reading life needed. 📚🥹
10/10, would let Maddox derail my life plans too. 😂❤️
Maddox, a champion winning football player, who spends the night in Vegas with Gabi and falls hard!
Gabi, a newly divorced bakery owner, is out enjoying a girls weekend only to end up in bed with Maddox.
This is my first reverse age gap so I was a little worried whether or not I would like the book, but when I say I could not put this book down that is not an exaggeration! I related so much with what Gabi had gone through that it was almost cathartic. I cried, I smiled, I laughed out loud, I got angry. The rollercoaster was real with this one! I can not wait for book 2 to come out in June and I really hope that it's Beau and Shelby's book.
Thank you Smuthood and Chelle Sloan for choosing me for an ARC of this book!
Very sweet romcom. Maddox is super sweet with such a golden retriever personality. I wasn’t totally sure how I felt about Gabi. She’s 11 years older but came off a little naive at times. The kiss cam moment at the hockey game was adorable.
For me, and this is totally personal taste, it leaned a little cheesy at times and had more internal monologue than I usually like, so I found myself skimming a bit. But it still made for a good read if you’re looking for something easy, no angst, and super sweet. Plus, Tiny Tot has to be one of the cutest baby nicknames ever.
Tropes: reverse age gap accidental pregnancy he falls first golden retriever MMC divorced FMC football romance
This book was so much fun! From Karaoke to a panicked road trip, every second of this book was a good time. I loved how mature and steady Maddox was, and even though he had his own traumas he stepped into his role of partner and father seamlessly. Gabi deserved the world after her divorce, and not only did Maddox give it to her, she took it for herself like the bada$$ she is!
I loved that this linked back to previous books/series by Chelle Sloan, and I'm SO deeply looking forward to the next book!
Thank you Chelle Sloan and Smuthood for the opportunity to read this ARC, these are all my own thoughts and opinions!
Unplanned Play was such a cute and fun read! I really enjoyed the buildup and the background we get from Gabi and Maddox, which added depth to their story and made their connection feel genuine. Watching them slowly fall in love was absolutely adorable and easy to root for.
Maddox is the literal definition of a green flag, he’s sweet, supportive, and completely swoon-worthy. He gives off major golden retriever energy.
While it didn’t completely sweep me off my feet, it was still an enjoyable, feel-good romance that left me smiling. Perfect for readers looking for a light, charming love story.
I’m a sucker for a well written unplanned pregnancy trope and add in a reverse age gap…. I loved this story and Maddox and Gabi so much. Maddox is such a golden retriever character that you can’t not love him. Gabi is starting over after her divorce and she’s such a strong character. I really enjoyed how open they were with each other and there wasn’t any miscommunication! The side characters were also great and I can’t wait for their stories. I’ve loved all of the Chelle Sloan books I’ve read and this was not an exception. Can’t wait for the rest of the series!
Celebrating her divorce Vegas style, Gabi is living her best life and parties with the Nashville Fury, specifically Maddox. Maddox (24) & Gabi (35) rock each other's world in this epic reverse age gap. Both living in Nashville, Maddox longs for more from Gabi. Gabi longs to be independent and successfully run her bakery. And there there is that surprise pregnancy! Chelle Sloan really brought the humor and found family vibes for this fantastic start to the Nashville Players series. I loved this book so much and can't wait for the next one. I am hooked!
So good! New to me author and I'm so glad I read this book. Maddox was so perfect! Loved everything about his character. Loved them chemistry between him and Gabi and obviously loved all the banter. The Poker club guys were top tier and I cannot wait to read Beau and Shelby. That will be a wild ride.
Are you looking for an absolute green flag of an MMC💚?! How about a spicy reverse age gap where she upgrades BIG TIME?! Then look no further than Unplanned Play. Gabi and Maddox aka Maddy Daddy were SO good together.
If you like your pro football players to be obsessed with their woman and a golden retriever, then Maddox Gallagher is your guy. At 24, Maddox is actually an old soul at heart and the perfect match for Gabi. Gabi has just finalized her divorce and is celebrating with her two best girls in Vegas when she meets Maddox. These two instantly hit it off with the help of a little karaoke, and the rest is history.
This book had so many laugh out loud, sweet and swoony, spicy, and fantastic found family moments. Chelle has also set us up perfectly for the rest of the series, and believe me when I tell you that you need to read Unplanned Play just to get a glimpse of all the good stuff to come!👀
Thank you so much to Chelle for trusting me with this beta read!
Unplanned Play Chelle Sloan Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5) Spice: 🌶️🌶️
I love Chelle Sloan, and was super thrilled to get an ARC copy of her new series. I can say without a doubt that this new series will not disappoint! I was completely hooked, and it has my favorite trope, reverse-age gap (wink). From the very first chapter, I knew this was going to be one of those stories I couldn’t put down, and I devoured it in one day.
Book one of the "Nashville Players" kicks off with Maddox Gallagher celebrating another Super Bowl, and Gabi on a girls' trip to Las Vegas, celebrating her newly single status. Bad decisions and zero expectations, that was the plan. Maddox is riding the high of a major career win, and Gabo is ready to finally live her best life without anyone holding her back. What neither expect is to meet on a night of big changes, and the sparks are instant. For Gabo, it’s just about letting go and having a good time, celebrating the moment with no strings attached. But for Maddox, it’s different; what’s supposed to be one unforgettable night feels like forever, and he knows right away he’s met his match. This book has it all: reverse age gap, a golden retriever hero, divorce, surprise pregnancy, and the book will keep you hooked, not just for the love story, but for the powerful individual growth each character goes through.
What I loved about the book:
1. The story doesn’t try to make everything perfect or easy. The relationship between Maddox and Gabi takes work. Maddox has to learn patience and be there for Gabi as a friend first before they become lovers. <3
2. Gabiiiiiiiii! I love her character so much, super relatable (30-year-old trying to navigate dating and life). What I love most about Gabi is that she’s independent, determined to build her own life (and her bakery!), and doesn’t lose herself in a man again. I love how Chelle wrote her character arc. It could have easily lost what she was trying to accomplish with Gabi, and she could have come off as standoffish and bitter after her divorce, but she didn’t. The vulnerability and sweetness she showed toward Maddox, even when she wasn’t sure, made me love her.
3. Maddox, oh sweet Maddox, he is just the perfect book boyfriend. I love that Chelle paints his story arc as a charming Playboy without making it a focal point. It is discussed briefly, but it does not overtake the book and Gabi and his story. I’m tired of authors making the reformed Playboy their whole personality. Chelle did Maddox’s character justice. Our sweet Maddox is just a golden retriever hero who loves sports, theater, science, and his family. Total package <3
4. The side characters. I cannot wait to read more about Beau, Shelby, Josie, Asher, and Theo’s stories. I literally can’t wait to read their books and see more interaction between " The Poker Club" and the girls. I won’t spoil anything for you, but there’s a lot of chemistry between some of the side characters. Special shoutout to Phyllis and Kitty, they are an absolute hoot, and I want to be like them when I’m in my 70s.
I highly recommend you read Unplanned Play. It was an amazing read, don't want to say more in fear of spoiling the book for you, but if you are a fan of romance and god story telling, you must read!
Unplanned Play is a super cute read of a one-night stand to more, with an unplanned pregnancy, reverse age gap, all mixed into a sports romance. When Gabi has a girls’ trip to Vegas, she comes home with a souvenir. One could say it is a ‘positive’ly shocking memorabilia (think along the lines of a ‘+’ or ‘=.’)
Chelle Sloan has been a dependable author of mine to read, so when I heard about Gabi and Maddox’s story, I simply said, ‘yes, please.’ Despite going through a contentious divorce that resulted in low self-esteem and being riddled with second doubts, Gabi is ecstatic to be celebrating her freedom. Little did she know that she would meet her forever in Maddox Gallagher while singing karaoke.
Maddox is so freaking good and was the star in this book. He’s the true golden retriever type, yet this golden could get a little dirty as well. 😈Despite being younger than Gabi, he truly is an old soul who also acts very mature. He loves to help the people he cares about, often thinking of them before himself.
There were so many moments of hilarity that were given through all the characters in the book. Awesome interaction between all primary and secondary characters. Poker night, Maddox and his ‘permed’ hair, Shelby’s seven iron, and a great aunt who loves all things voodoo, Phyllis and Kitty at Gabi’s bakery, along with Beau and Shelby’s intense relationship, made this book a winner.
“…one night with Gabi has put me under some sort of a spell. It’s like I’ve been reverse dickmatized.”
Unplanned Play completely stole my attention from the very beginning. What starts as a girls’ weekend in Vegas quickly turns into a one-night connection that neither Gabi nor Maddox can forget, and when fate brings them back together in Nashville, their story only gets better from there.
Gabi is newly divorced and determined to rebuild her life on her own terms. After losing herself in a marriage that slowly chipped away at her identity, she’s focused on her bakery, her independence, and figuring out who she is again. A much younger football player and an unexpected pregnancy were definitely not part of her plan, but sometimes the best things in life don’t go according to plan.
Maddox Gallagher is an absolute dream. He’s the definition of a golden retriever hero with a confident edge. From the moment he meets Gabi, he’s completely all in, and I loved how he never backed down from that. He’s patient, supportive, and determined to give Gabi the space she needs while still showing her exactly how she deserves to be treated. Watching him quietly show up for her, support her bakery, and slowly break down her walls was one of my favorite parts of the story.
And the chemistry between them? So good. The tension builds naturally as their relationship evolves from friendship to something deeper, and when the spice hits, it delivers. Their connection feels emotional, playful, and full of that can’t-stay-away energy that makes every interaction feel meaningful. Maddox balances sweet and confident perfectly, and the way these two connect makes it impossible not to root for them.
I also loved how the accidental pregnancy trope was handled. It didn’t feel forced or rushed. Instead, it added another layer to their story and highlighted their growth both individually and as a couple. Maddox stepping up and embracing everything that comes with it was honestly just another reason to love him even more.
The side characters added so much to the story as well. The Poker Club, the friend group, and especially Phyllis and Kitty brought humor, warmth, and the perfect setup for future books in the Nashville Players series. I’m already excited to see where this series goes next.
Unplanned Play is heartwarming, emotional, and filled with chemistry, growth, and a love story that feels both unexpected and perfectly meant to be. If you love reverse age gap, accidental pregnancy, golden retriever heroes, and characters finding themselves while falling in love, this is definitely one to pick up.
When her best friends take her to Vegas to celebrate her divorce from her high school sweetheart, Gabi was just looking to have some fun before starting a new chapter of her life. When the newly crowned NFL championship team walks into the karaoke bar they were drinking in, her friends dare her to get up on stage with one of their players, which turns into spending the evening celebrating with the team, and as she finds herself being truly seen for the first time she she can remember, she spends the night with him in his hotel room, only to leave before he wakes up in the morning. But as she returns home to Nashville, she can’t get him out of her mind, even if she knows that she’s not ready to start anything new.
As soon as Gabi walked onto the stage that night, Maddox knew he would marry her one day. Known as one of the biggest players on the team, he’s used to sneaking out of hotel rooms in the morning, but when he woke up to find Gabi gone, he was devastated. As much as he wants to respect her space back in Nashville, when a teammate gives him her phone number, he can’t help but reach out, even agreeing to just be friends if that’s what she needs, but the more time they spend together, the more sure he is that he will wait forever if that’s what it takes. When he finally breaks down her walls and she lets him in, they’re both caught off guard when they realize they brought a souvenir back from Vegas, one that will make its appearance in 7 or so months.
I received an early copy of this book from the author and The Smuthood and I absolutely loved it! Maddox took the reformed player trope to the next level when he fell in love and first sight, and truly proved that age is nothing but a number. While she was over a decade older than him, Gabi’s previous marriage stifled her so much that in many ways, Maddox ended up being the more mature one in their relationship, showing her time and time again how a woman deserves to be treated, and that doing the right thing for someone you love is never a chore. I loved how once she realized this was the real deal, Gabi was just as all in as Maddox was, and we were able to see them be vulnerable together, while also lifting each other up. This book had so many hilarious moments, especially involving the poker club, and I can’t wait to see who will be the MCs in the next one.
I know many people are not in love with the pregnancy trope, as a person who loves a pregnancy trope book, this is a book I highly recommend to you, because you could be missing out on one of the best romance books you have read. If you are looking for a romance book that will have you craving baked goods with accidental pregnancy and a golden retriever MMC, this is the book for you. Unplanned Play is book 1 in the Nashville Players series by Chelle Sloan. Firstly, I would like to thank the Author Chelle Sloan and the Smuthood for an ARC.
Unplanned play was written so well that I could not help but fall in love with the characters and the story . It did not unfold the way I had expected it to, especially with the characters and the romance elements. Each of the characters added to not just their own stories but to the main storyline. There were so many parts that had me laughing, and so many swoon-worthy moments by Maxton. It also has the perfect setup for the next book in the series, as these two characters had so much tension and banter throughout the whole book. I really did love how each person came together in the book; it added so much fun, and I loved the "poker club". This 100% is a book that is really addicting and will have you excited for the next book in the series.
Maxon and Gabie are the perfect couple for each other, both of them stubborn in their own ways, but fit each other completely. Their story was written so well, I loved how they went from having a one-night stand to a friendship, then later a relationship with a child on the way. It showed both the tough times in a relationship, especially after a divorce from a shitty ex-husband who would only put her down. I loved how they got to really know each other before they got into a relationship, and how Maxon would support Gabie with not just the bakery but her life. Maxon is a true golden retriever boyfriend who is there for Gabie, not just when she needed, but also when she was stubborn or needed help with her bakery . Gabi's character is written so well , I really loved how it showed her struggles, not just from her past relationship (I really hated that guy), but as a small business owner. I loved how these two characters came together and their story. I highly recommend you read this book on release day, 26/03/2026. Happy reading.
Unplanned Play by Chelle Sloan is book one in the Nashville Players series.
What can you expect? 🤰 Accidental pregnancy 🎂 Reverse age gap 💘 He falls first 🏈 Pro football player 💔 Starting over after divorce 🌃 One night turns into more 🏡 Found family
⭐ 4.5 | 🌶️ 2
Gabi just finalized her divorce and heads to Las Vegas with her friends to celebrate. The same night, the Nashville Fury win the Super Bowl, and during a night out, a bet lands her on stage with Maddox. From the moment he sees her, he’s completely mesmerized. Their chemistry is instant, and their connection? So good. One night together turns into more when he shows up at her bakery, determined to win her over.
Maddox may be younger (24/25), but he’s incredibly mature. I loved how patient he was. Gabi puts him in the friend zone for a while, but he never stops showing up for her. The accidental pregnancy reveal was both funny and sweet (him panicking at the pharmacy? 😂), but what stood out most was how supportive he was through everything, even when she needed space.
Gabi (35) is focused on rebuilding her life and growing her bakery, but her past relationship makes her hesitant to open her heart again. Still, she can’t ignore her connection with Maddox. Watching them fall for each other was so sweet, and their age gap never felt like an issue, they just fit. Maddox was all in from the start, and the little things he did for her (taking notes, remembering everything, caring for her) melted my heart.
The character development and emotional depth were so well done. Gabi’s insecurities felt real, and Maddox handled them with so much care and reassurance. I loved how she stood up for herself with her ex—and Maddox’s words to him? Mic Drop.
The side characters were amazing. Shelby, Hannah, Beau, Simon (and his chauffeur outfit 😂), plus getting more of Ainsley and Lincoln made me so excited for what’s next in the series.I also loved the boys’ “poker nights”—those moments added so much fun and made the found family feel even stronger. 🃏
The spice? 🔥 Maddox’s mouth? Enough said. And I loved seeing Gabi grow more confident and comfortable with him.
Overall, this was such a fun, emotional, and swoony read. I loved how Maddox chose her every time, never letting his fears hold him back. Gabi didn’t expect to start over, fall in love, and build a new life all in one year, but sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them.
Thank you so much for the advance copy. This review reflects my honest thoughts.
Where to start! This book had me hooked from the first chapter. Maddox is perfection in every aspect. Gabi is who I wish I was when I was starting over in my 30s.
The book story starts with big celebrations for each of our MCs in Vegas (where else?) and a night that changes everything. Maddox was never sure if he believed in fate until Gabi walked onto the karaoke stage and he fell in love. YES, IT’S AN INSTA LOVE, but Chelle does it the right way. Turns out they are both from Nashville and while he’s had a number of chances to meet her there (going to her bakery per friend recommendation for starters) fate waited until they were both in Vegas at the same karaoke bar celebrating to bring them together. Maddox knows she is his future wife, only problem, she’s celebrating her divorce and starting over. Learning how to find herself again, AKA not interested in dating. They have a wild and unforgettable night and then she leaves.
Back in Nashville, Maddox wants to see her, but he’s respecting her wishes. She says she can’t date him but he wants to be a part of her life and offers her friendship. The story builds from there, I’m not spoiling it, you have to read it for yourself 😉 I promise it’s worth the read!
The characters are amazing! Chelle did an amazing job giving us depth and growth. Maddox was supportive and not pushy, he didn’t force Gabi into more, he was just what she asked, a friend. Did he flirt, shamelessly? Of course! He never took it too far. He isn’t just a football superstar, he’s smart, supports STEM, funny, hot, and pays attention.
Gabi is fantastic! She is so damn strong. Stubborn and strong willed. She is resilient and damn do I wish I was more like her. She lost herself in her marriage because her asshole husband but she was slowly finding herself and she didn’t let Maddox (not that he would have) or anyone else stop her from being who she truly was.
I loved the support characters and I am so excited for their books. I know they are going to be just as
Thanks to The Smuthood for my ARC and allowing me to read and review this amazing book early!
I have devoured so many of the books Chelle Sloan has written, and the first book in this new series is no exception. I was all in from the first page to the last. I absolutely loved it. Gabi is in Vegas celebrating her long overdue divorce from a cheating P.O.S. with her two besties. Throwing caution to the wind in the spirit of a mid life do over, she jumps on stage to sing with a very hot pro football player ten years her junior. She sang and danced her heart out feeling every ounce of chemistry the two shared on stage. Maddox was instantly head over heels for Gabi. Realizing they were both from Nashville and she owned the bakery all his friends kept telling him to check out had him convinced their chance meeting in Vegas had to be fate. They share a passionate night in Vegas only she slips out early in the morning before he wakes and he decides to give her space and not pursue her instantly on returning to Nashville. With a little friend intervention they see each other again, but Gabi is unsure about having a relationship with a younger man so soon after her divorce. Maddox is steadfast and patient being there for her as a friend while she can process him being more. A little divine intervention in the form of two pink lines gives him the chance to prove exactly what she means to him and that they are meant to be. Maddox is the absolute sweetest. A young guy with an "old soul", responsible and trustworthy. He supports STEM programs and her bakery, he is just an all around great person. Resisting him is an act in futility. The chemistry they shared in Vegas is still present in spades and they are pure fire together. I loved these two. Beyond Gabi and Maddox, the cast of side characters are equally as entertaining. Phyllis and Kitty are hysterical and a breath of fresh air. Their friends and family are supportive and genuine and funny. This book is the whole package. There is not one negative thing I can say about this book and I 100% recommend picking this up and getting started. You will not regret it. Thank you so much to Chelle Sloan for the advanced copy to read and review.
ARC REVIEW Unplanned Play by @chelle_sloan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (4.5/5)
This may be the best accidental pregnancy storyline I’ve ever read. Normally, I’m not a big fan of the trope because it tends to follow a familiar formula — a one-night stand that forces the MCs together after the pregnancy reveal. What makes Gabi and Maddox’s story stand out is that they’re already becoming a couple before they even learn about the pregnancy from their wild night in Vegas. She is saved as “Future Wife” in his phone because he knows he wants to lock her down from the moment they meet. They have already chosen each other.
Maddox is total book boyfriend material. He is a complete golden retriever — infectiously happy and genuinely kind — with surprisingly deep inner depths. The way he cares for Gabi is swoonworthy, determined to take their relationship at the pace that makes her comfortable.
Gabi is super relatable as a woman in her mid-30s starting over after a long, drawn-out divorce. She is finding who she is again and discovering what she wants in life… including a night with a younger football player. I love that she is strong and independent without losing any of her soft edges. She's the type of woman I would want as a friend.
And speaking of friends, Gabi might have some of the best. I am obsessed with her BFF, Shelby, a woman with such a powerful presence that she scared Gabi's ex with a simple look. That is the kind of woman I strive to be! I also can't get enough of Phyllis and Kitty, regulars at the bakery who always say the borderline inappropriate thoughts we're thinking.
This book is the perfect blend of humor, heart, and heart. Chelle Sloan continues to show why she's an auto-read author.

Chelle Sloan delivers another engaging and emotionally satisfying romance with Unplanned Play, the first in her Nashville Players series. From the opening chapter, the writing pulls you in with ease—balancing humor, heart, and chemistry in a way that makes this story incredibly readable and hard to put down. The premise is classic romance with a fresh execution: a Vegas meet-cute between Gabi, newly divorced and rediscovering herself, and Maddox, a younger pro football player who knows exactly what he wants. What follows is a one-night connection that evolves into something deeper, layered with a reverse age gap, an unplanned pregnancy, and a strong emotional core centered on healing and second chances. Where this book truly shines is in Sloan’s writing style. The dialogue is sharp and natural, filled with banter that keeps the pacing lively. The emotional beats land well without feeling overly heavy, and the balance between romance, humor, and spice is handled smoothly. The sports element adds a fun, dynamic backdrop without overpowering the story, making it appealing even for readers who don’t typically gravitate toward sports romance. Maddox stands out as a compelling male lead—his “golden retriever” energy is written with sincerity rather than cliché. His patience, consistency, and emotional awareness make his character feel grounded and believable. Gabi’s arc is equally strong, with her journey of rebuilding confidence and learning to trust again written in a relatable and thoughtful way. The supporting cast adds depth and entertainment, particularly with moments of humor that keep the story feeling light even when tackling heavier themes like divorce, self-worth, and vulnerability. Overall, Unplanned Play is a well-written, feel-good romance with strong character work, engaging dialogue, and a satisfying emotional payoff. It sets up the series nicely and leaves plenty to look forward to—especially for Shelby and Beau’s story. Thank you to Smuthood and Chelle Sloan for the opportunity to read and review this book
There’s a very specific kind of joy that comes from a book that makes you laugh one minute and then quietly tug at your heart the next, and Unplanned Play delivered that so effortlessly.
This was my first time reading Chelle Sloan, and it definitely won’t be my last. From the moment Gabi and Maddox meet in Vegas (with a little karaoke-fuelled chaos), I was hooked. But what kept me invested wasn’t just the fun premise, it was how real everything felt underneath it.
Gabi’s journey really stood out to me. Coming out of a marriage that dimmed her light, she isn’t immediately ready to jump into something new, and that hesitation felt genuine. Watching her slowly rediscover herself and allowing someone to truly see her again, was such a rewarding arc.
And Maddox… I adored him. He’s the definition of “falls first and hardest,” but what made him special was his emotional maturity. Despite the age gap, he felt like the steady one. The one showing up consistently, proving through actions that love doesn’t have to feel heavy or uncertain. He meets Gabi where she’s at, and that patience made their relationship feel strong and believable.
Their dynamic was one of my favourite parts of the book. The banter was sharp, the chemistry undeniable, but what really sold it was the friendship underneath it all. You could feel them becoming each other’s safe place.
The humour in this book deserves its own mention because I genuinely laughed out loud more than once, especially anything involving the poker club. The found family element added so much warmth and gave the story this sense of belonging that made it even harder to leave behind.
And yes… the tropes, Absolute gold. Reverse age gap, he falls first, accidental pregnancy, second chance at yourself. It’s a combination that just works.
Who this is for: If you love character-driven romances with humour, heart, and a hero who is completely, unapologetically obsessed, this one is going to hit.
Thank you so much to the author and Smuthood PR for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

“Sometimes I hate being a man, because I have to be in the same category as this mediocre one” Mic drop.
Tropes: Football player MMC X Baker FMC Reverse age gap (11 years) Accidental pregnancy One night stand → something more Fresh start after divorce
After a Vegas girls’ trip meant for letting loose and moving on, Gabi finds herself unexpectedly tied to Maddox, a younger football player with charm, depth, and surprising emotional maturity. What begins as a one-night escape quickly evolves into something neither of them planned—but maybe exactly what they needed.
This story really resonated with me. Gabi’s journey as a woman in her 30s starting over felt incredibly relatable. That feeling of being “behind” in life? It was handled with care and honesty. Watching her slowly reclaim her voice (literally and figuratively), her dreams, and her confidence after her marriage was one of the most rewarding parts of the book.
Maddox felt like such a breath of fresh air—an “old soul” with genuine emotional awareness. There’s something so grounding about a character who knows how to show up not just with his words but the action behind them. It’s rare (and so appreciated) to see that kind of MMC.
I also loved the small details—his sweet tooth moments made me laugh, especially his obsession with bear claws Having worked at a bakery counter for most of my 20s, that was definitely a go-to treat for customers who were retiring. And Phyllis and Kitty? Absolutely iconic. I want to be like them someday.
I'm especially curious about Beau and Shelby and the secrets between them. Why did Shelby visit Nashville three times during her and Gabi’s long friendship? I have a feeling there’s more to uncover, and I’m hoping we get their story next—especially if it leans into enemies to lovers (my favorite trope of all time).
Huge thanks to Smuthood PR and the author for this fabulous ARC!! I’m definitely continuing this series!
4.75⭐️ Book one in the Nashville Players series I am a sucker for a reverse age gap but add accidental pregnancy then I will be reading it. Every single time. This one did NOT disappoint!!!!
Maddox summed up: I've known this woman for a total of twenty minutes, and unless her grand plan tonight is to take me to a hotel and harvest an organ, I don't think I'd ever divorce her if I was lucky enough to have my ring on her finger. & M: "Pass code is 031301." G: "You're giving me your passcode?" M: "I'll give you my social security number and my back account information if you ask. Just scroll through the tests until you see something that catches your eye."
Unplanned Play has all of the following: 🏈 Poker club (Like fight club we don't talk about it) 🧁 What happens in Vegas did not stay 🏈 Pro football player x bakery owner 🧁 Accidental pregnancy 🏈 Reverse age gap (35/24) 🧁 Starting over after divorce 🏈 One night turns more 🧁 No third act breakup 🏈 Relatable characters 🧁 Old lady banter
This book is about a woman that is coming out of a long term relationship/marriage with her high school sweetheart and the only guy she has ever been with. She is just wanting to feel "freedom" for the weekend with her girls.
I have to say I LOVE 🩵 Maddox with my whole 🩵heart. He is the man every woman should have.
Gabi never expected anything but fun while in Vegas with her girls. So what will hurt having an one night stand?? Well two pink lines and her having no desire to be in another relationship.
Maddox would do anything for Gabi. Even put aside his true feelings and just be her friend. He was not going to walk away even if she tried to push him away. Which she did multiple times.
I cannot wait for the next books in the series. Beau, Asher, and Theo. Of course, we also have Josie and Shelby.
Thank you Chelle Sloan and The Smuthood for the early copy. Above are my honest thoughts.
Unplanned Play by Chelle Sloan is one of those romances that hooks you with a fun, impulsive beginning…and then hits you with way more heart than you expect.
What starts as a girls’ trip + one-night stand in Vegas quickly spirals into something much bigger because that “one night” doesn’t stay in Vegas. Instead, it turns into real-life consequences, unexpected emotions, and a connection that refuses to be ignored.
This book leans hard into some of my favorite tropes:
Accidental pregnancy Reverse age gap Athlete romance One night → something more
And honestly? It works.
The chemistry between the main characters is instant, but what I appreciated most is how it grows. It’s not just physical attraction there’s emotional depth as they try to figure out what this unexpected situation means for their futures. The hero (hello, pro football player) brings that confident, swoony energy, but also shows up in ways that actually matter.
The heroine’s journey really stood out to me. She’s coming out of a divorce and trying to rebuild her life on her own terms career, independence, identity and this curveball forces her to rethink everything. That internal push-and-pull between “I had a plan” vs. “maybe this is what I’m meant to have” felt very real.
One thing I loved? The no third-act breakup. Instead of unnecessary drama, the story focuses more on growth, communication, and choosing each other—even when things aren’t perfect.
What I loved:
A fun, addictive premise that turns emotional Strong character growth (especially for the FMC) A supportive, all-in hero (we love to see it)
Overall, this is a feel-good, slightly messy, but ultimately heartwarming romance about unexpected turns and finding love when life doesn’t go according to plan.
If you love sports romance with emotional depth and a “this wasn’t supposed to happen but I want it anyway” vibe… this one is definitely worth the read.
This is probably the best book Chelle Sloane has ever written. I absolutely loved it! So much so I want to read it again. ______________________________________
After years of being held back, Gabi is free and she is celebrating it! With her two bestie on each arm, they are ready to make sure this is a night they would never forget. What’s a better place than Vegas baby?
“I’m thirty-five. It’s Sunday night in Vegas, and I’ve already been drunk for three days. I’m dehydrated, my back hurts, and I really want a bath with Epsom salt for my feet. I’m tired as hell.”
Maddox is living the dream! He just won another championship, and in Vegas no less. As the “self-appointed president of the Nashville Fury After Party Committee”, what’s a better plan than karaoke?!
But Maddox and Gabi do a little more than sing some songs - they have a souvenir coming in 9 months. ______________________________________
I loved Maddox. I want a Maddox, can I have a Maddox?
He knew what he wanted, and he wasn’t afraid to show it. He showed up - he might even be willing to fight.
“Am I prey? I’ve never been prey. I’ve never even been in a fight. I’m a lover, not a fighter.”
His actions truly showed his love for her, and I think Chelle did a fantastic job so us readers felt that love. He was her steady rock - wash some dishes at the bakery? Buy 40 pregnancy tests (and panic while doing it)? Or jumping on flights - he was willing to do everything for her.
Gabi had been through the wringer with her ex, so love was not even on the table for her. But Maddox had other plans, and Gabi couldn’t help but be charmed by him.
I truly saw myself in her. The world kept spinning, and there you are. Suddenly you are in your thirties, and all the plans and dreams you had, didn’t quite work out. Everyone deserves a Maddox in life, and a Shelby.
Sincerely a Shelby
