'Sean Watkin brings Liverpool to life in all its rich dark colours' Val McDermid
Sometimes the end is just the beginning.
A young girl is found dead on Southport Pier. Less than an hour later, a patient who recently vanished from a secure mental health facility is discovered in the sand and February snow.
DCI de Silva and DS Barclay are back, but they find themselves pulled back into an all-too familiar nightmare. Is this a tragic series of coincidences, or is it inextricably linked to a conspiracy they once thought contained?
As the snow falls, the duo must navigate a trail that is rapidly growing cold. But when the case hits devastatingly close to home, de Silva and Barclay realise the truth will demand a price neither of them is prepared to pay.
In a heart-pounding race against an unknown enemy, they are headed for a confrontation that will change everything.
A dark and gritty crime thriller, perfect for fans of Luca Veste, M. W. Craven and Russ Thomas.

‘I absolutely LOVE this series and this one didn’t shy away from some incredibly hard hitting topics. I may have let out a small yelp when it ended…’ Reader review.
I discovered Sean Watkin’s DCI de Silva series in December last year and was hooked. It's now time for the third book in the series and for me, the characters really have begun to matter. No Place Left proved that to me because this one absolutely broke my heart in places. I'd advise that you really do need to read these books in order. Black Water Rising and Better Off Dead lay the foundations for what happens here, and without that history I don’t think this book could possibly have the same emotional impact.
The opening is immediately unsettling. A young girl is found dead on Southport Pier and, less than an hour later, a missing patient from a secure mental health facility is discovered in the sand. DCI de Silva and DS Barclay are given this investigation, and before long there are uncomfortable reminders of things they had hoped were behind them.
That’s all I’m saying about the story. Go into this knowing as little as possible about the plot.
I will say that it is incredibly dark. There are themes here that some readers will find very difficult and I really would suggest checking trigger warnings if there are subjects you prefer to avoid.
There were times when I actually had to stop reading for a moment. Sean Watkin takes these characters to some extremely difficult places and because I’ve become so invested in them, I felt every bit of it. I became genuinely emotional and yes, there were tears.
For all the darkness, there’s still that wonderful relationship between de Silva and Barclay. Their conversations, humour and loyalty provide desperately needed moments of warmth amongst everything else that is happening.
The freezing Southport setting is perfect too. Snow, sand and bitter cold seem to seep from the pages, adding to that overwhelming feeling that something terrible is always just around the corner.
No Place Left is brutal, upsetting and sometimes very difficult to read, but I couldn't put it down.
I finished it emotionally exhausted.
What on earth are you doing to us, Sean Watkin?
An incredibly powerful third book. I need the next one, but I’m not sure my nerves do.
Well fuck me I literally want to bang my head against a wall after that ending! Sean I love ya but I also hate you for putting me through that 🤭 I need book 4 yesterday please as I don’t know what to do with myself now. I think we need to set up an emotional support network for everyone who has read this book 😅
No Place Left opens with a tone and an intensity that never lets up from beginning to end. Still reeling from recent events, DCI de Silva is back, still jaded but hungrier than ever for justice - with the gorgeous DS Barclay by her side.
When a body is found in Southport, it soon becomes clear that the investigation has links to their previous case - bringing the danger frighteningly close to home for some.
💫
If there was ever a book tour to be a part of, it was this one. Sean’s DCI de Silva series has become one of my absolute favourites. With Black Water Rising and Better Off Dead setting the bar incredibly high, I was buzzing to be invited onto the tour for No Place Left. A huge thank you to Sean, and to @nick_picksbooks for organising another brilliant tour.
When Sean hinted that this book would be darker than ever - well don’t threaten me with a good time!!! Safe to say he absolutely delivered. As soon as I received the book I cancelled my plans IMMEDIATELY. I honestly couldn’t tear myself away and finished it in record time. It was traumatic, brutally graphic, and filled with an overwhelming sense of foreboding.
Given its darkness, brutality and emotionally devastating themes, “enjoyed” feels a wee bit inappropriate- but I was completely captivated. Sean has absolutely hit it out the park - once again. The emotional whiplash I got from reading this was something else! The notes I sent him after were legit unhinged!
No Place Left is an exceptional piece of storytelling that truly is a work of art. In the best way possible Sean really knows how to make his readers suffer - while absolutely begging for more. Outstanding!
No Place Left is a dark, tightly wound crime thriller that wastes no time pulling you into its bleak, snow‑covered world. The opening is stark and unsettling: a young girl found dead on Southport Pier, followed less than an hour later by the discovery of a missing mental‑health patient lying in the sand and February snow. The juxtaposition is chilling, and the author uses it to set a tone that never quite lets you breathe easily.
DCI de Silva and DS Barclay return to the page with the weary determination of two men who know exactly how bad things can get — and how quickly. There’s a familiar ache to their partnership, shaped by past trauma and the conspiracy they once believed they’d contained. The suggestion that these new deaths might be tied to that old nightmare gives the story a creeping inevitability, as though the past has simply been waiting for its moment to resurface.
The investigation unfolds against a backdrop of falling snow and rapidly cooling leads, and the author captures that atmosphere beautifully. The cold becomes part of the tension — numbing, isolating, and symbolic of how quickly hope can freeze when the truth refuses to reveal itself. As the case begins to hit painfully close to home, the emotional stakes rise sharply. Both de Silva and Barclay are forced to confront what they’re willing to sacrifice, and the cost feels brutally real.
The pacing is brisk but never rushed, with tense encounters, dead ends, and moments of quiet devastation woven throughout. The sense of an unknown enemy pulling strings in the background adds a layer of paranoia that suits the story’s tone perfectly. By the time the final confrontation looms, the novel has built a steady, heart‑pounding momentum that carries you straight through to the end.
Gritty, atmospheric, and emotionally charged, No Place Left is a compelling addition to the series — a thriller that explores loyalty, trauma, and the dangerous weight of unfinished business. It’s a cold, gripping read that lingers long after the last page.
With thanks to Sean Watkin, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
Well, well, well… a long and very much awaited return to the dark, gritty world of DCI de Silva and DS Barclay has meant I absolutely devoured @seanwatkinauthor latest offering, No Place Left… Boy was I so appreciative of @nick_picksbooks for inviting me on the tour of this one! 👀
In this third instalment, Sean does what he does best. We’re dealing with the aftermath of book two, but of course we aren’t left to dwell for long (not even one page in fact) as a new body is found and we’re thrust straight into another very large, very complex puzzle of generational and systematic abuse, murder and conspiracies; of course building on the last two books. And this time, it becomes personal.
What I love about this series, especially as someone who isn’t usually a crime reader, is Sean’s characterisation. Every character genuinely feels like returning to an old friend, and I think it’s an absolute skill to have me feeling every feeling right there alongside them; fear, pain and, at times, the sassiest and most sarcastic banter too (obviously peak Scouse humour 😅). Sean’s books are packed with twists, hardcore plot and some seriously graphic detail, but for me, it’s the characters that have me desperate for the next story.
This one had me gripped from beginning to end. There were definitely moments where what I was reading was gruesome and genuinely upsetting, but I think it works because de Silva and Barclay are so believable and so well researched that, as a reader, you feel like you’re in safe hands.
Of course, like all Sean’s books, homage was paid to Liverpool, the best city in the world and for me, the little Scouse-isms that Sean uses are just *chef’s kiss* in really making the story come to life. I still drive down de Silva’s neck of the woods every couple of days and think about her whenever I do! Also, thanks for spoiling my days out to Otterspool with my two boys, Sean, that’s me never relaxing there again with the kids. 🥲
Sean, Nick and @canelo_co thank you so much for including me in the tour and Sean, please never, ever stop writing… I’ll forever read anything you write!!
One of my top, must-read authors and another 5 star read ⭐️🙌🏽
No Place Left is the third book in the DCI de Silva series… 📚
The story begins when a young girl is found dead on Southport Pier, after escaping from a secure mental health facility less than an hour earlier. 😩
DCI Winifred de Silva and DS Barclay are on the case, determined to uncover exactly what happened to her. But the deeper they dig, the more they realise this is far bigger than they ever expected, bringing danger right to their doorstep… 👮🏻👮🏻♂️
Could it be connected to the conspiracy from their previous investigation involving the Woulds app and the incidents linked to Rainford Lane School for Boys? 🧐
I honestly thought I knew where this was going… I did not! 🤯
The twists, the tension and the way everything starts coming together had me completely glued to the pages. Every time I thought I had it figured out, Sean threw another curveball at me. And that ending… jaw dropped! 😱
OMG how dare you, Sean?! You cannot put me through all of that and then leave me needing answers! 🤣🫣 I need to get my hands on book 4 ASAP because I need to know what happens next! 🤔
If you love gritty crime thrillers, police investigations, dark conspiracies and twists that leave you questioning everything, then you absolutely need this on your TBR! 😍🙌🏼
Please get your preorder in because this one is out on 17th September and I promise you, you will not regret it! 🧾
A massive thank you to Nick (@nick_picksbooks) for selecting me to take part in this tour, and to Sean for the gifted ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. ♥️
When the fabulous Nick from @nick_picksbooks asked for volunteers to join the read along tour for this I could not have replied any faster! And I’m not even going to lie, I read it as soon as Sean sent it to my inbox and I devoured it!
After reading the first two in the de Silva series (incidentally Better of Dead remains one of my favourite books ever!!) I knew we’d be in for a rollercoaster ride with this third installment. BUT I did not expect it to be this much darker and heart breaking. This felt so much more than just a story. A couple of times I thought things were going in a different direction for it to twist and turn the other way. What added to my anxiety while reading this was Sean’s cheeky little message to me apologising before I’d even read it - which resulted in me threatening to block him!! I think Nick can also vouch for my theories and comments along the way. But seriously Sean gave us so much more with this one and I’m still reeling afterwards. It literally kept me on edge all the way through.
It seriously can’t be the end of the series so we need @canelo_co to let Sean write book four - right away!!!
It’s darker. It’s twistier. It’s heartbreaking. It’s out 17th September.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
If you read anything, read this series. If it in your tbr, bump it right up the pile. And if it’s not. Get it fucking added!!
I've got chills, they're multiplying! Book 3 in the DCI de Silva series hits all the right notes if you want a dark, gritty crime thriller.
When a young girl is found dead on Southport Pier. Less than an hour later, a patient who recently vanished from a secure mental health facility is discovered in the sand and February snow. DCI de Silva and DS Barclay are back, but they find themselves pulled back into an all-too familiar nightmare. As the snow falls, the duo must navigate a trail that is rapidly growing cold. But when the case hits devastatingly close to home, de Silva and Barclay realise the truth will demand a price neither of them is prepared to pay.
Edgy, dark and a compelling read: Sean hasn't half raised the bar with the 3rd book in this series. The pace of the book is incredibly quick so don't be shocked if after an hour of reading, you've been through a rollercoaster of twists and turns.
I absolutely love this series for the characters especially Barclay. He's complex but at his core a loyal and protective family man. I really enjoyed his moments in the book even though some parts were extremely dark 🫣
Overall, a thrilling ride. If you haven't started this series, you need to get on it asap!!
Thanks to the amazing nick for setting up this book tour and allowing me to be a part of it!!
I am a huge fan of Sean's work and this series is incredible. It's dark and grim and he does not hold back when it comes to talking about difficult subjects.
The book opens with a crime scene that is not for the faint hearted and De Silva and Barclay are soon investigating a crime that has similarities to a nightmare they thought was behind them.
The fallout from books 1 and 2 are still unresolved and we learn more information about the tangled web of lies that unfolded.
Without giving too much away the things that happen in this book will shock you and absolutely floor you, I couldn't read it fast enough and I felt so anxious throughout as the tension Sean had created was next level!!When I got to the end I swore a lot, messaged Sean saying "what the actual f**k" and just sat in silence for a while.
This is crime fiction at its best and I need more from this author asap.
It you love dark, gritty, crime books then look no further....I highly recommend reading books 1 and 2 before this is released next month, just to give you the full experience of this absolute masterpiece of a series Sean has created.
This IS my most incredible read of the year. With the turn of every page, it left me breathless and full of dread, right up until its devastating and heart pounding finale. The author, Sean Watkin certainly knows how to sock it to the reader, relentlessly shocking and terrifying, the gut wrenching intrigue hits you hard and shakes you like a rag doll in the jaws of a Rottweiler and just when you think you’ve shaken yourself free, the maws stretch wider and swallow you whole. I simply could NOT put this brilliantly put together thriller down and when I tried, I lay awake in such a state of high tension and picked it right up again, devouring it’s pulse racing content in one, chilling sitting. If there’s one thriller that is essential for every fan of the crime/mystery genre, THIS is the ONE. Actually, do NOT forget its predecessors, ‘Black Water Rising’ and ‘Better Off Dead’ for the full picture, each as incredible as the next. I cannot recommend this book enough and frankly, I haven’t stopped talking about it since. A bloody great 5 Stars.
The third in the series featuring Liverpool detective DCI Win de Silva, No Place Left starts with a dead girl who has just given birth. The remainder of the novel stays in the same dark space, building on previous novels' core narrative of a massive child sex ring.
Like previous episodes in the series, the police are a long way behind those fronting the massive conspiracy. They have captured some members, including police officers. But the toll of struggling to stop exploitation on a massive scale is immense.
More murders see the parents of exploited children targeted, although the motive isn't clear. Win and her team struggle to make sense of a mass of information that seems to lead nowhere.
No Place Left is a novel with a huge scope, a large cast of characters and a variety of interconnected story lines. It's a great read, if difficult in places because of the subject matter. And there is more to come ...
Dark, gritty, and utterly gripping, this new instalment from Sean Watkin grabbed me on page one and kept me reading into the wee small hours.
De Silva and Barclay feel like old friends by now, and it's their brilliance as a duo that carries this book, watching them work, argue, and quietly hold each other up is one of the real joys of this series.
The previous case has never really gone away, and here it bleeds into everything, shadowing every step they take. It's multi-layered and often difficult to read, handling harrowing subjects with real sensitivity and care.
What I love most is how human de Silva and Barclay are, flawed, tired, vulnerable, never striving to be perfect, and all the more relatable for it.
As the snow falls on Merseyside the tension builds relentlessly, right up until that final shock that left me reeling. I need the next one right now!
My thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for the ARC. All views are my own.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for giving me this free advance copy, and I’m writing this review honestly and without bias. Win Di Silva is my new Matilda Darke! Sean Watkin serves up another fantastic read in what is shaping up to be an excellent series. A dark and gripping read that picks up where Better off Dead left off and its compelling from the off. The plot is multilayered and complex, the writing sublime, the characters coming to life from the pages which results in keeping the reader on the edge of the seat for the majority of the book. The pace in the latter stages is relentless and I found myself tripping over the words to get to the conclusion. And that ending - what are you doing to us Sean Watkin, I need book four immediately If you haven't yet started this series then why the hell not! Five fabulous stars
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I have read all the books in the DCI Silva series and this one was an absolute cracker!
A young girl is found dead on Southport Pier, followed shortly afterwards by a missing patient from a secure mental health facility. As DCI de Silva and DS Barclay investigate, they soon realise the two cases are connected to a conspiracy they thought they had left behind.
I loved being back with de Silva and Barclay, and the fact that I have followed them throughout the series made this case feel particularly personal. There are plenty of twists, tension and suspense, and I was completely hooked trying to work out how everything would connect.
A gripping investigation, brilliant characters and another fantastic addition to the series. Definitely one of my favourites.
Book three in the DCI de Silva series is beyond intense. I can't say it was an easy read as the theme of child abuse which started in the earlier books is a difficult subject matter. Having discovered in earlier books what happened to de Silvia's late husband at Rainford Lane school; in this book you learn more about the involvement of others in de Silvia's orbit. This is very personal for de Silva and she is determined to get to the bottom of the depravity that started at Rainford Lane. Need book four now.
I am totally worn out after reading the latest book in the DCI De Silva series, which I highly recommend to lovers of crime thrillers. It's a dark, gritty and emotional rollercoaster of a read with a sensitive plotline which is filled with tension and suspense. The ending left me wanting so much more but I guess I will just have to wait for the author to write the next episode! Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
4.5 Thanks so much Sean, Nick and Canelo for this advanced copy. This book is dark, like gasp and cringe and want to look away dark but such a page turner. It has some themes that may not be for everyone but it’s so well written. The pain and turmoil plus the love and dedication. I adore these characters and really hope they’ll be another book shortly!
“No Place Left” by Sean Watkin is a solid crime thriller with some seriously dark topics. It’s intense, suspenseful, and kept me interested from beginning to end. It’s a gritty, compelling read that I enjoyed!
The book wasn't for me. It's akward and cringe at points and I just couldn't root for anyone. The characters felt superficial and I didn't care too much about the ending. Itdid keep me interested enoigh to finish it.
When a young girl is found dead on Southport Pier, and a missing patient from a secure mental health facility is discovered buried in the snow, DCI de Silva and DS Barclay are thrust into an investigation that feels chillingly familiar. As the body count rises and the truth edges ever closer to home, they uncover a conspiracy far darker than they could have imagined, one that threatens everything they hold dear.
I was incredibly lucky to receive an early copy of this ahead of publication and what a privilege it was. Thank you so much my darling @nick_picksbooks for having me on this blog tour!
Book three in the DCI de Silva series is an absolute knockout. Sean Watkin doesn’t just push the boundaries, he obliterates them. This is one of the darkest crime thrillers I’ve read in a long time. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝… 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐧 🔥
The investigation is relentless, but it’s the personal impact on de Silva, Barclay and the wider team that elevates this story to another level. Just when you think you’ve caught your breath, Sean lands another devastating blow, dragging you down yet another frighteningly dark alley. The shocks come thick and fast, the tension is suffocating and I found myself holding my breath more than once.
This is a story filled with tragedy, heartbreak, uncomfortable truths, blood boiling rage and moments that genuinely left me speechless. Brutal, uncompromising and impossible to put down.
If you love gritty police procedurals, emotionally charged investigations, morally complex cases and crime thrillers that leave a lasting mark, make sure this is on your September TBR. My trophy copy is on pre order!
This was my most anticipated read of the year and it definitely didn’t disappoint! I am so glad that this series is continuing and I will have more amazing stories to read with the characters.
The story opens with the grizzly discovery of a child and just gets darker from there. DCI de Silva and DS Barclay investigate and there are ties to a previous case that then put them and those close to them in the firing line.
Dark, gritty and atmospheric. The setting of Liverpool and its people is realistically represented and adds to the plot.
The characters are so well developed that you completely empathise with them.
I love this series and can’t wait for the next one (especially after that ending!).
Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo Crime for the advanced copy.
