SOMETIMES THE RECIPE FOR TRUE LOVE CAN BE THE PERFECT POISON.
Jack Marconi is back. In The Guilty, Jack finds himself investigating a local restaurateur who’s not only obsessed with the sexy, dark romance novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, he’s accused of attempting to murder his school teacher girlfriend. As the now brain-damaged young woman begins recalling events of that fateful winter night when she was allegedly pushed down the stairs of a West Albany mansion, she becomes the target of the angry foodie/sex-obsessed boyfriend once again. The Guilty: A Gripping Hard-Boiled Mystery (P.I. Jack Marconi Book 3) - a review by Rosemary Kenny
Rather a dour and somewhat cynical flawed man, P.I Jack 'Keeper' Marconi is on the case with his sidekick Blood, an ex-offender in the 3rd Jack "Keeper" Marconi series novel, by Vincent Zandri, The Guilty. Hired by Howard Sanders, the wealthy father of the young Darah, fiancee of Robert Davids Jnr - a successful business entrepreneur, with no integrity, a drug habit and a sex dungeon in the basement! He's also believed to be The Guilty party of the title, when Sarah mysteriously falls, (or was she pushed?) down the front steps of his mansion in the early hours of a wintry, icy day - but are darker forces than his sexual perversions at work? Why does 'Junior' call his dad instead of 911? Who chooses the 'cottage hospital' to take Sarah to? Where is Sarah's ex-husband? Why aren't local police deemed likely to expose the real villain - are they being paid off?
Shot at during a high-speed car chase it seems that more than one side of the case wants both Jack and Sarah out of the picture - but why would the possible involvement of supernatural beings make anyone hide the truth, before the body count rises even higher? To learn the shocking truth, get your copy of The Guilty as soon as you can...it's a sure winner for Vincent Zandri, in the Jack "Keeper" Marconi series that you shouldn't miss!
THE GUILTY by Vincent Zandri is an interesting Crime Thriller. #3 in the "P.I. Jack Marconi Thriller",but I feel can be read as a stand alone. This is my first by this author. What a great Crime/Thriller story filled with substance, action, compassion, passion, depth, and murder with some wickedness though into the mix. A truly haunting, and chilling story. Apparently Jack Marconi is back from the two previous stories by this author,he has a sidekick named, yes, this freaked me out a little, Blood. What should that tell you? Two not so likely chums! Fast paced and action filled from beginning to end. A true page turner with come truly evil characters and some truly good characters too. Be warned does contain some rather foul language, otherwise a really good story. Oh did I mention a murder or two, some obsession, and some passion! If you enjoy crime/thrillers,mystery, and suspense than "The Guilty" is a story for you to read. Lots of twists and turns involved in getting to the bottom of this story. An enjoyable read! Received for an honest review from the author and Pump Up Your Book.
RATING: 4
HEAT RATING: Wild Ride
REVIEWED BY: AprilR, Review courtesy of My Book Addiction and More
This was my first Zandri novel and I loved it. I couldn't put it down. Descriptive, alluring and edgy. I gasped, chuckled, even welled-up with tears. Really a great, cinematic read.
This is the second book I have enjoyed with this Narrator/Author combo, and it was just as good as when I first joined them in Moonlight Falls. I received an ARC of this audiobook and this review has been left voluntarily. Although this is the third book in the series it can be enjoyed as a standalone. Hired by Howard Sanders, our hero Jack is the Private Dick on the case of what really happened to his daughter Sarah one cold night in February... did she really slip on the ice... or was she pushed down the stairs by her BDSM fanatic boyfriend? Nothing about the case adds up. If she had just fallen and hit her head... why did her fiancé call his father instead of the ambulance? Why did they take her to a hole in the wall emergency room miles away instead of the nearby hospital? Sarah's memory is unreliable, and 6 months between the incident and now have almost depleted any chance of evidence from the 'crime scene'. Jack quickly learns that theres more to this story when several attempts are made on his life, and evidence starts pointing him back to his own client. Then back to the fiancé when he discovers the private torture room in the mans basement. Teaming up with his new partner Blood, Jack "Keeper" Marconi tries to solve the mystery but clashes with the police who begin treating him as the prime suspect when another young woman ends up dead. Are the authorities being paid off by someone higher up the food-chain? Whatever is going on... Jack has to get to the bottom of it soon before he and Sarah end up silenced for good.
( Format : Audiobook ) "Till death do us part" Author Vincent Zandri can be counted on to come up with a good story and larger than life protagonists and The Guilty does not disappoint. A civil court case between the very rich architect father of a girl left brain damaged after a fall on the icy steps of her fiancée's home and that same fiancee, involves PI, former prison supervisor, Jack 'Keeper' Marconi in an investigation to find out if she fell - or was she pushed? The story is wild, twisted and very enjoyable and made all the more so by the narration of the excellent Andrew Wehrein. His voicings of each of the protagonists is distinctly individual and he becomes the fast talking, rather jaded investigator, Keeper. The story is told in the first person from the PI's point of view, with occasional 'news bulletins' from a food blogger's column. A cleverly written outrageous story with witty asides and well performed: a must for all who enjoy the charismatic bad boy investigative genre. My thanks to the rights holder who gifted me a copy of this fun book, via Audiobook Boom at my request.
Would you try another book from Vincent Zandri and/or Andrew B. Wehrlen? I've listened to a lot from both. My expectations from my previous experiences weren't met by either in this book, but I would still listen to others by them.
Has The Guilty turned you off from other books in this genre? I'm less interested in this series by the author.
What do you think the narrator could have done better? Mr Werhlen usually does an incredible job with voice distinctions. This was not one of his best narrations. But perhaps he shouldn't give his all to a book that was flailing. You know, sometimes you can only work with what you've got. Can't turn everything into gold.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities? The book description had a promising mystery. It just didn't quite meet the hype.
Any additional comments? "I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."
Jack "Keeper' Marconi must have more than nine lives because it seems like he went through at least that many in this story alone! It seems the daughter of a well-to-do and well-known architect has hooked up with an even larger-than-life financiers and benefactor who both have some nasty skeletons in their closets. While being sworn enemies they have some shady dealings together that ultimately end in the deaths of more than a couple of characters and involve more than a few of the highest elected officials and law enforcement officers in the a Albany area. How does this mishmash of Keeper plus a friend (or two) and criminals plus government officials all blend together? The answer is, they don't but you will have to read it yourself to figure it out. I've seen fewer twists and turns on a roller-coaster!
This is an entertaining murder mystery with some supernatural elements. There is a P.I. There are murders. Twists happen. The case is resolved. It follows the standard murder mystery setup, but there is a little more to it than that. This book reminds me a bit of the Dresden files, but better (because I really did not like those). This won't win any awards, but it is a fun and entertaining read. The narration is solid. The pacing is great. Although this is book 3 in a series, it stands alone quite well. I may even go back and read the other two because it was great for listening to in the background while I work.
I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this honest review.
WOW - Mr. Zandri seems to have set his finger firmly on thee pulse of Mickey Spillane, except for modernized and without the commie lingo.
After double checking the definition of noir" (- a genre of crime film or fiction characterized by cynicism, fatalism, and moral ambiguity.) Zandri has a very solid writing style, with some small amount of self-deprecation thrown in, and is able to deliver exciting twists and turns.
I've read several books in the Marconi series (as well as several others by this author) and have enjoyed every one of them - highly recommended,.
Jack Marconi is hired to prove that Robert David, Jr. was responsible for the injuries Harold Sander's daughter, Sarah, sustained when she fell down the icy steps in front of his home. Jack is well on his way to proving just that when Sarah disappears from the rehab center she was sent to. The more he starts to dig up, the worse things look. It seems that some really influential people in Albany are getting their pockets lined by the Davids. Can he save Sarah without getting thrown in jail or killed? A really dark mystery with a red hot ending.
This is a wonderfully written story. I really couldn’t figure out the if he did or didn’t do out her in a coma....until we got closer to the end. Very well done and enjoyable to listen to. I Liked the thought of him working now as a PI and using his resources from previous jobs. The characters were lively and the story thrilling.
This is my first book by this author and won’t be my last. I did listen to this on audio Andrew B. Wehrlen is the narrator. He did a great job and I could easily listen to him again.
The Guilty (Jack "Keeper" Marconi #3) was a good read by Vincent Zandri. Jack finds himself investigating a local restaurant owner who is obsessed with the novel Fifty Shades of Grey and accused of attempting to murder his school teacher girlfriend. The young woman is now brain damaged and starts recalling events of that fateful night she was pushed down the stairs of a West Albany Mansion. She's now the target of her boyfriend again while he's trying to silence her. I enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more by the author.
Jack (Keeper) Marconi is hired to get the goods on a wealthy bachelor playboy who may or may not have been the cause of his girlfriend's life threatening brain injuries. Keeper is good at getting to the truth. The problem is, his employer doesn't really want the whole truth. With both sides working against him and several attempts on his life, it is a good thing he has his sidekick, Blood, to watch his 6. Lots of action!
I see the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Vincent Zandri adds humor to suspense in his writing. Kept me interested to the last page, not one wasted word. Now I have to put my plans on hold and purchase the first book of this series and grab another cup of coffee.
Another fast paced Keeper Marconi mystery. From the beginning, Marconi is set-up to take a fall. The mystery is who is behind it and why. Two wealthy fathers are pitted against each other - or- are they? The severe injury to one father's daughter by the other's son could be attempted murder, or an accident, or a way to make money. I was gifted this from the author.
I am thrilled to have read this book! Sarah is lucky Keeper was on the case. I like the relationship of Blood and Marconi. I like the pace of the book. I like the twists. The ending was great. All round super story.
The least guilty remain out of jail in this book. Without giving any hints, think sex, drugs, influence, murder, prison, detectives, restaurants, beer, wine, tats, police, rehab, etc, etc, etc. Even the good guys in this book are breaking the law all over the place. Read it.
This book kept you on your toes until the end. Great main character. Loved how they finally got the bad guy. Would love to read more from this author with this main character.
Action packed. Easy read. Marconi is relatable character. Much like a Spencer novel. Sandri writes well. No thinking needed. Just enjoy a life deversion
Former prison warden turned private investigator Jack "Keeper" Marconi is back in The Guilty, the third book in the Jack Marconi P.I. Thriller series. Author Vincent Zandri weaves a hardcore noir thriller that takes the reader on a wild ride as they follow Keeper's latest investigative adventures.
Set in Albany, NY, a single mother is seriously injured with a suspicious head wound when she leaves the home of her fiance, a wealthy Albany restaurateur. Private Investigator Jack "Keeper" Marconi is hired by renowned architect Harold Sanders to investigate the suspicious injury to his daughter Sarah Sanders, who had been in a coma, suffered brain damage, and has no recollection of the incident. Suspicion points to Sarah's wealthy playboy restaurateur fiance, Robert David Jr, who is accused of attempted murder. When Keeper investigates the fiance's life, he uncovers the playboy's kinky erotic sexual obsessions, and a wealthy influential father who will do anything to protect his son and family name. With the help of his side-kick Blood, a former inmate and ex-drug dealer, Jack gets too close to uncovering the truth, setting himself up to become the next target.
The Guilty is an intriguing crime thriller that captivates the reader's attention as they follow Jack on his latest investigative adventure. This fast-paced action-packed story will keep you turning the pages with its many suspenseful twists and turns. The Fifty Shades of Grey references of kinky erotic sexual obsessions/games that playboy Robert Davis, Jr. engages in are cleverly interwoven throughout this thriller. This riveting detective story delves into eroticism, obsessions, corruption and murder, with a multi-layered cast of characters, witty dialogue and a chilling storyline that is sure to keep hardcore fans riveted and guessing what will happen next.
The Guilty is the third book in the Jack Marconi P.I. Thriller series, but it can be read as a stand alone book. Once you get a taste of Jack's investigative adventures, you'll want to read them all!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher in exchange for my honest review and participation in a virtual book tour event hosted by Pump Up Your Book! Virtual Book Publicity Tours.
Jack Marconi is a private detective who is hired by Sarah's father to find out if Junior shoved her down the stairs and tried to kill her. Sarah is just waking up from a 6 month coma and doesn't remember anything about her life. She's in the hospital just fighting to gain her speech and thoughts.
Meanwhile, Keeper is tracking both Mr. David, Sr. and Mr. David, Jr. When he first speaks with both of them he basically gets tossed out of their places. Not one to be deterred he goes on to the next person who can tell him about the night of February 18th. As he's going from one stop to the next a man begins following him and then starts shooting at him. He realizes he's hot on the trail of something and that he needs some help.
Instead of going to the police, Keeper goes to Blood. Blood is a former inmate at the prison where Keeper used to work. While he isn't a trained officer, living on the streets as a younger man and being in the street trade business, Blood is a crack shot and loyal to Keeper. The two begin looking deeper into what happened to Sarah and begin to find a crazy secret world where torture and love are part of the same game.
I enjoyed the characters the most in this book. I found Keeper to be a sarcastic, funny, and persistent man. Mr. David, Jr. was a spoiled 41 year old man child who always got his way thanks to his daddy's money. My favorite character was Blood. He was loyal to the end and always ready to go whenever Keeper needed him. He was also sarcastic and straight to the point. The cast of characters are what really made this book for me.
The story itself had ups and downs. While it all tied up neatly in the end, there were several incidents that didn't really add to the story and I wasn't sure why they were in the book. The surprise ending was really good though I wish there were more clues throughout the book to lead up to what happens in the end.
I've read other works by Vincent Zandri and enjoyed them, but this was my first Marconi novel. Wow. Marconi (Keeper) must solve the case of a young woman who's been conked on the head and left without memory on the premises of her perverse (and perverted) fiance. Enter Marconi and his trusty sidekick, Blood. These guys are cool in the face both of Albany corruption and flying bullets. And I love their back stories -- Marconi the former prison warden, Blood the former (or maybe not-so-former) drug dealer.
Zandri is a hard-boiled pro, and this book goes down as easy as a planter's punch on a hot afternoon.
Disclosure: I was provided this book at no cost and Zandri has blurbed a book of mine, but there was no quid pro quo or promise of a positive review.
Jack Marconi is a former prison warden turned private eye. In The Guilty – the third book in a hugely successful series – Marconi is hired by a successful architect and asked to investigate the rich playboy who is accused of attempting to murder his daughter. Vincent Zandri’s The Guilty is a gripping combination of old-school hardboiled detective yarn and a ‘80s high-octane action movie. Immensely enjoyable.
Secrets abound of what happened to Sarah at 2 am, did she really slip on the ice outside the mansion home, and yet fiancé didn’t call 911. She’s been in a coma, the father thinks she was pushed, and wants answers. The Keeper as he goes by, soon finds, that he has two sides working against him, and neither really want the truth, and he wonders why. With the help of. Blood, he gets them. Can be read alone, good edge, to this mystery.
Having read most, if not all of Mr Zandri's books, I can honestly say that this one will not disappoint. It reads well as a stand alone, but you would be missing two great books if you don't read books one and two. Not only are they equally good books, but it will be easier to follow the characters in this one. Thanks again Mr Zandri for another great read.
