NOT ONE LEFT

Rate this book
The long-anticipated sequel to 2023’s vampire thriller, NO ONE IS LEAVING, is here!

It’s been nearly three years since the events at Kilbride House, and the survivors have been trying to rebuild their lives. However, one of them has been on a mission.

Now Rhea Bennett finds herself in Whitby, where a group of vampires are gathering, hiding in plain sight behind the carnival atmosphere of the Goth Festival. Their plan: to unite, collaborate, and ultimately destroy.

Rhea’s to stop them.

Danielle Tilson also finds herself in Whitby, but doesn’t quite know why. When the two meet, Rhea knows that with Danni around, her mission just got a boost; she can use her experience at Kilbride House to help her search for the vampires…

“You, my girl, are going to walk around in your zombie daze for me, homing in on every vampire lair. And each time you find one, I’m going to kill it. Until there’s not one left.”

From the author of ‘Grievers’ Wood’ and ‘Ringrock’.

You would think surviving a getaway with friends that turns into a bloodbath ( the excellent “ No one is leaving”) would mean Danni and Elliot could go on to have happy lives. Alas this is not the case and Elliot wakes up one morning to find Danni gone- mysteriously pulled towards a congregation of vampires ( what is the word for a group of vampires anyway?). Elliott sets off after her with the kids ( surely someone could have looked after them!). The vampires are up to no good ( the rotters) having developed a drug to stop them fighting amongst themselves. This does not bode well for humankind. Meanwhile vampires are turning up dead.

I loved the first book, and sequels notoriously find it hard to live up to reader expectations. That being said as a stand alone - I really enjoyed this. As a sequel- I enjoyed it but not as much - i know I shouldn’t compare as it’s a different book entirely. This book didn’t have the atmosphere and terror of the first ( the setting being isolated rural and isolated) but it had family, flaws and emotion. Danni’s time losses in particular worked really well. But a lot of the book was spent on the dynamics of the vampires and I was more interested in the family and the other survivor.

Anyway- 4stars really good read

Wow, this has to be one of the most complex vampire stories ever! Not only is it a sequel to an already complicated vacation/isolation horror tale (and so for the most part not entirely a standalone), it's also packed with action and vampire intrigue, to the point that it reads more like three books in one than a single volume.

It's dense with plot: the story of characters we'd seen before spilling into the affairs of old vampires who are in turn facing their own dilemma for the first time in their history - allow themselves to ingest a serum and - side effects be damned! - finally overcome their instinctual intolerance to other vampires in order to start hunting down humans as packs and even create a vampire empire, preying on an enslaved humanity; or keep their hunting edge intact and remain alone for all eternity, their day companions (or should we say "servants") exempted? Add to this plotline another familiar character determined to bring down vampires one at a time - till there's not one left, per the book's title - and you have a pleasantly and entertainingly intricate and highly sophisticated narrative brimming with mystery, plans within plans, vampires battling each other, a human family getting drawn in willy-nilly into the story with disastrous consequences, all set in Witby, where Stoker's Count Dracula first set foot (or paw?) in England!!

Although I didn't find it as suspenseful as the first volume, this is perfectly reasonable if one takes into account the large scale of the story and its central premise. It involves vampires directly (so not much mystery there), touching on practically every one revelation provided in the first book, and building on them without offering new ones. In truth, new reveals are not really needed: the sequel is trying to shake the foundations of the first volume, so that at the end further mysteries may be hinted at, perhaps preparing the way for a third book. Which would be a most welcome addition to the established lore!

The book is certainly immersive, dark, and fast-paced. The more you read the more intense it gets. As always with Barnard's works, this is another easy recommendation!

Not One Left, by Stephen Barnard, is the fantastic sequel to No One Is Leaving. This is quite possibly my new favorite from him!

This review will contain spoilers for No One Is Leaving.

Not One Left picks up almost three years after the tragic events at Kilbride House and the death of so many at the hands of vampire Benjamin. Danielle Tilson successfully fought the vampiric infection of her blood and is living as normal a life as possible with her husband, Elliot, who also survived the horrors of that trip, and their three children. But somehow, she finds herself drawn to the small, seaside community of Whitby. What she doesn’t know is that the town is teeming with vampires bent on forming a union that will destroy humanity. But another Kilbride survivor has plans of her own. When Rhea Bennett runs into Danni, she quickly realizes what plagues the other woman, and knows she can use this to her advantage to kill every vampire in Whitby, ensuring that not even one is left alive.

Barnard is one of my favorite authors, and I thought I knew his work well. I was wrong. This story has a darkness and depravity that I haven’t seen from him, and I loved every word of it. The interwoven stories of the vampires and what they wanted to do and Rhea’s drive to stop them blended seamlessly with Danni, a woman desperate to get back to her family. The story was tense and the sense of dread was palpable. This is far from your ordinary vampire story, but a fresh take on a much loved subgenre. For all those who enjoyed No One Is Leaving, this is an absolute must read!

This is what a vampire novel should be

Follow up to No One Is Leaving. Definitely read that one first to get author's version of vampires (also, the 1st one rules). Some of the very few survivors of the first book are pulled back into action to deal with a whole new much more massive...

If you haven't read that one yet, so so, now
This story follows a couple of the only survivors from that book. Hard to not spoil anything so I will say Vampires, Modern, and awesome.

Two years after the events in Kilbride House, a serum is being offered to a privileged few to join the eternal. A serum that allows the vampyre to unite, to build a force unlike any other.

The survivors of that fateful Scottish trip have tried to move on. But one is commanded against her will. Another watches;; willing to take any measures to ensure not one of the vampyre are left.

Rhea is the kick ass we need to protect humankind.

The immersive settings that you find in all Barnard’s work is present and correct: you can smell the sea , it’s that crisp. But he has went deeper, deliciously darker and downright visceral in this eagerly awaited sequel. And it’s well worth the wait!

I was initially a bit worried about going into this sequel without having refreshed myself on what happened in “No One Is Leaving”. It did take a couple of chapters, but the events and characters of the first book slowly came back to me. “Not One Left” is a new story in the same world, expanding the cast, supernatural aspects, and death toll.

Loved the setting of Whitby- it’s so picturesque sounding that I had to do a google image search. Stephen obviously put in a lot of detail into the plot, the scenes, and the vampiric and human figures the reader encounters. You really become immersed in the story and I enjoyed the wild adventure it took me on.

Danni and Elliot are trying to move forward after everything they’ve been through, but danger isn’t done with them yet. Danni losing time and waking up in strange places adds a really unsettling layer to the story, and it kept me hooked the entire time. There’s a constant tension as they fight not only to survive, but to protect the people they love and finally put an end to it all.
If you enjoy vampire stories with a unique twist, this is definitely worth picking up. I loved returning to these characters, and this sequel did not disappoint!

This sequel is a total pivot in tone from “No One is Leaving, and it totally works. A couple of survivors from the Kilbride House—one spellbound, the other seeking vengeance with ninja weaponry—are summoned to the seaside town of Whitby (the famous setting of Stoker’s Dracula). There, a gathering of goths and a conglomeration of vampires seeking global dominance converge for a weekend bash. Excellent spin with Bernard’s take on these bloodsuckers, and I love where this series is headed!

The sequel to No One Is Leaving, this story picks up two years after the first one, and throws you right back into the action. There are beloved characters from the first story, as well as new ones to enjoy, and a brand new type of vampire story to sink your teeth into. If the first story was an isolation horror, this sequel is about creating community, as well as a fight for survival. It's been amazing to catch up with one of my favourite characters in a brand new story, and what a story!

Read No One is Leaving first.

Stephen knocked it out of the park. Vampyre come in all makes and models it is what we envision and I envisioned a creepy, strong and eternal being. Who were the survivors of that weekend in Scotland? Will they get retribution on the Vampyre or will they join forces.
