Cherringham #15

Saatuslik kukkumine

Rate this book
„Saatuslik kukkumine“ on sarja viieteistkümnes raamat.

A Fatal Fall: Cherringham 15
Chronological order, not necessary but recommended.

In A Nutshell: Written in the vein of a classic mystery our amateur sleuths are investigating what appears to be the accidental death of a labourer. I found little to get my teeth into and guessed the plot. Pleasant but not rivetting.

The Protagonists: Take one hard-boiled former New York City Detective retired to Cherringham England and one Brit businesswoman divorcee who fled home to Cherringham, and you have our protagonists. The professional and amateur in the sleepy Oxford countryside. Jack Brennan is the gentleman, and Sarah Edwards mother of two is the techie.

The Plot:How did the builder die. Well, it turns out to be a case of eye spy.

Written in the old school style this formulaic cliche story works wonders. It transports the reader to a sleepy English village where murder happens without any of the gore. And there is no pressure on Jack or Sarah to have a relationship. Yet. They are just two people who work well together and enjoy what they do.

Well written, light and refreshing a pleasant read.

I had just finished my last book and fancied a short read to cover a motorway bus journey. I had previously enjoyed this series but thought I'd come to the end and moved on to the authors' "Mydworth "series . Surprised /delighted when I found that the series had continued. I was happy to return

This is a series of novellas that I stumbled on ages ago. Originally written and self produced as monthly stories - memories of Dickens and Conan Doyle perhaps , by an English guy and an American both accomplished writers.

The stories are all about an older American detectective who retires to an English village and meets up with a younger divorcee with a couple of kids.
In many ways they need each other and have had successes working together to solve local mysteries in the past.
Here, they are approached to look at a case that the local police have already labelled as 'Accidental'.
A man doing a bit of overtime in the dark on a building site, falls to his death.

Within the limits of a short story, various suggestions are put forward as to motive and perpetrator.
A cozy read and although I almost got the guilty one right, I was a generation wrong in the motive.

For the cozy read that they are with a feel good bit thrown in, this isn't bad at all.

It was set up to be an accident, but one dodgy witness was bothered by it. How to get legal evidence is a major problem for Jack and Sarah to find in their investigation.
Love this idea of a series given in short bursts that are just the right size as well as so much more flexible than a whole novel! The ongoing sleuthing involves a retired and widowed older NYPD homicide cop who is finding life in the English countryside a fair antidote to his mourning, and a local recently divorced woman who has returned to her hometown with her children. They make a good sleuthing pair.
Voice actor Neil Dudgeon has been an excellent asset to my listening pleasure, making sure that
I know who's talking while I do mindless things.

I'm not really sure how to rate this one. I absolutely love the town of Cherryingham. The setting of a small English town and the main characters always make this series a cozy read that I enjoy going back to. I love the relationship between Jake and Sara and the mixture of his NYC style and her British one. I also love the narrator. I just didn't love the actual mystery. Seemed a bit over the top.

For me, there was a big dissonance between the victim's POV at the beginning and how he was perceived by others. Because the guy was a real dick. Yet his friends and his lover portrayed him as almost a saint, standing up for the little man, when in reality he was just a lazy bugger who was in it for himself, who gambled, made debts and did drugs. And the way he talked about his "Love Machine"? Iggit! It felt to me like they were two completely different people.

Another quick outing with Jack and Sarah. This time, the reader knows there is no such thing as a simple construction site accident when this investigating duo is called in. With a couple of twists and turns, and a few deceptions, the reader is quickly back in the mix and all too soon realizes feigned concern is nothing more than a ruse.

Late one rainy, icy night, a building worker is finishing up for the night. As he climbs around the scaffolding piling up tiles for the next day, he slips and falls to his death. Is it an accident? Is it something more sinister? Jack and Sarah look into the mystery.

Accident or Murder

Once again the dynamic duo has stumbled upon another mystery. Would they prove the death of Dylan McCabe is an accident or a murder? The Christmas Holiday is upon them but they would not let their guard down. Once again you can travel right along with them.

A good book to listen too when you clean the house. It gives you ”Midsomer murders” wibes. It is fun to try to figure out how the guilty person is. Jack is a retired cop from US, Sarah is a singel mom and they solves crime together. This one was about a murder/accident.

I have been listening to the Cherringham series in order so this makes the 15th one. There is starting to be a predictable sameness in them.

trīs dažādi stāsti vienā grāmatā. labs variants, ja prasās ļooti vienkāršus, nesamudrītus detektīvstāstus.
