Vivian's grandparents started Sullivan's Fine Jewelry and now Vivian manages most things in the shop. Her speciality is designing engagement rings, although she's given up on her own happy ending. Until she meets NHL defense player Ty McCade, who sees her in a way no one else have.
I love Vivian's creativity and her easy going attitude. Ty has recently found out that he's autistic, and I love how he works with his therapist to find strategies to cope with everyday life without being overwhelmed. I love how Vivian and Ty communicate with each other and being honest with what they think and feel. I love that the romance is a slow-burn and that their chemistry is off the charts; there's no need for open door scenes to convey THAT feeling!
Without being all that knowledgeable myself I think that Anne Kemp has managed really well to show what it can be like to be on the autistic spectra. Of course it's very individual how such a diagnosis affects a person and there’s also several variants, often combined with other diagnosises. I believe it's the first time I've read about a main character being autistic and it was very interesting to experience it through Ty's behavior and thoughts. Vivian's reaction when he tells her about his diagnosis also shows a lot about her personality: "So that's why you're magic."
This is the second book in the series and we get a glimpse of the couple from the first book, but you can easily read this as a standalone.

Ty recently learns he's autistic, and one of my favorite things about this book was how thoughtfully that journey was handled. As a neurodivergent reader myself, there were so many moments that made me pause and think, "Yep. I understand that." Not because every neurodivergent experience is the same but because there's something incredibly powerful about reading a character who spends years feeling different and finally starts understanding why.
Ty wasn't reduced to a diagnosis. He was a hockey player. A brother. A friend. A man learning about himself. And most importantly babes? A man who loved Vivian exactly as she was.
What I loved most about these two was how safe they became for each other. There was trust. Patience. Support. And two people learning they didn't have to carry everything alone.
And can we talk about Grandma? Because I would absolutely like to adopt her immediately. She stole every scene she was in. Every. Single. One.😂
This book reminded me that love isn't always about grand gestures.
Sometimes it's simply finding someone who notices when you're struggling before you've even said a word.
Someone who makes the world feel a little less overwhelming.
Someone who feels like home.

This is was such a sweet hockey romcom! The self-discovery theme and how the main characters learn and growthrough challenges together was sooo good!
This romcom was everything you could want - I laughed and cheered and even got a little teary-eyed at times. I really appreciated the way that the relationship between the characters was written. I don’t want to give away too much, but you get to see beyond where I feel like most romcoms leave the characters in their relationship. Having read this book before the first one, I definitely want to go back and read the first and all the others that are yet to come.

Really enjoyed this book! I'm always a fan of neurodivergent representation in books, and this story was just so sweet. I loved getting to watch our characters not only fall in love with each other but also find a home in each other.

This wonderfully written book starts with a lovely letter from Anne Kemp about Autism. She points out there are so many varying degrees and how people should be open minded. Vivian and Ty each have the need for patterns, schedules, and way they each deal with things differently. This story is so realistic and sincere that I can say I totally get their progression. A circle of friends and team mates, I can reflect on my own journey. I cannot praise this book enough. Autism has always been, but needed science to catch up. There are many out there not diagnosed however with such a large varying scale most have no issue adjusting naturally with out diagnosis. I discovered my own when one of my children were being diagnosed. Talking with my husband we agree that we don't know any one who does not have it. We have two extremely intelligent family members who on the flip side are shy in unfamiliar settings. This is a MUST read and I will say you will stop and say "that is totally me!"

The Midnight Defensive was such a sweet, heartfelt romance that completely won me over. From the moment Vivian and Ty meet through an unexpected kiss, I was invested in their story. What starts as a chance encounter slowly grows into something deeper, and I loved watching their relationship develop through friendship, trust, support, and plenty of memorable moments along the way.
Vivian was easy to root for. She spends her days designing engagement rings and family heirlooms for other people's special moments, even though her own happily ever after never made it to the altar. She is the kind of person who takes care of everyone around her, tries to fix every problem herself, and rarely asks for help. I loved watching her begin to explore new opportunities through her family business and slowly learn that she doesn't have to carry everything alone.
Ty completely stole my heart. Recently diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, he is navigating a world that suddenly makes more sense while still learning how to process what that means for his future. Anne Kemp handled Ty's journey with so much care and sensitivity. What I loved most was that Ty wasn't defined by his diagnosis. Instead, we got to see a thoughtful, caring, observant man surrounded by people who genuinely loved and supported him. Vivian, his sister, his teammates, and his therapist all met him where he was and appreciated him for exactly who he was. Watching Ty realize that the things that made him feel different were also part of what made him special was one of my favorite parts of the book.
The relationship between Ty and Vivian felt incredibly genuine. While Ty initially sees Vivian as someone who has everything figured out, he slowly discovers that she carries her own fears, hurts, and insecurities. In turn, Vivian learns that she doesn't always have to be the strong one. I loved how they became a safe place for each other. Some of my favorite moments were the quieter ones, where they simply showed up for each other and reminded one another that it's okay to be a work in progress.
And I cannot write this review without mentioning Grandma. 😂 She was easily one of my favorite side characters and brought so much humor, wisdom, and warmth to the story. Every scene with her was a delight, and honestly, I wanted to adopt her by the end of the book.
Filled with hockey, laughter, heartfelt moments, wonderful representation, and a romance built on acceptance and understanding, The Midnight Defensive was a beautiful reminder that home isn't always a place—sometimes it's a person. If you love closed-door hockey romances with emotional depth, lovable characters, and a hero who sees the real you, this is definitely one to pick up.

I loved Ty and Vivian in this book. From the moment they meet - with an unexpected kiss - I was invested. I loved how their relationship grew and progressed.
Ty has recently found out that he is on the spectrum - which rocked his world but also opened a window. He now has a name for what he has felt for his whole life and also, with the help of his therapist, is able to start to get some "instructions." Anne Kemp does an amazing job of telling this story with care and sensitivity. I loved how Vivian, Ty's teammates, and sister where super supportive, met him where he was at, and saw him for who he truly was and the "magic" that he had.
I also loved how Ty was able to show up for Vivian. While he thought she had it all together and all figured out, we are reminded that we all have our journeys and things that we carry and it is important to find our person or people that can help us along the way.
And honestly, the Grandma had to be my most favorite side character! It makes me wish she was a real person so that I could adopt her as my grandma. Like it was said in the book - I want to be like her when I grow up.
I'm excited for the next book in the series as it has been announced that it will be Liam and Eva's story!

This is a great story with so many different layers to it. The characters were wonderful and their situations were very realistic. I did not read the first book in the series so I don't know if they need to be read in order. I was able to follow this story without reading that first book.
The first interaction between the MMC and the MFC comes in the first chapter of the story. Vivian Sullivan is trying to desperately dodge the interest of a guy she had met before. Ty s is such an awesome character. He's finally discovered why all of his life he seemed to be out of sync with everyone else. He just starting seeing a counselor to help him deal with his new diagnosis of being on the Autism Spectrum Disorder. He has no problem playing professional hockey because of the order of the game. He can get overwhelmed when life throws him a curve he didn't plan for and Vivian is someone he didn't plan for. But he cannot seem to get her out of his mind.
Ty and Vivian will be working together with a teen girl's hockey team as his sister, their coach is away planning her wedding. Ty will be coaching them and Vivian will be holding jewelry classes to help build group unity. The girls will be designing a trophy for their team.
I loved the intensity of Ty and how he picked up on the small things that concerned Vivian. The story of the engagement ring that she designed caught his attention and when she only shared part of the story he knew there was more to it.
There were some humorous parts of the story like when Vivian was showing Ty's sister Emma, the rings she designed for her wedding and Ty put on the groom's ring and they could not get it off his finger.
Vivian is pretty special too because despite her wounds from the past, she always seemed to be there for everyone. When Ty finally shared with her his recent diagnosis, she didn't pull back from him but was accepting and encouraging.
All I can say is that these two were meant for one another but will they fight their attraction or embrace a future together?.

So she makes a decision to keep things light and uncomplicated. So when she kisses a stranger on the street to get away from another stranger, she never expects it to turn out to be a well known sports star. While she isn’t looking for anything serious, she can’t keep from being drawn to this man. He looks at her like she hung the moon. Talk about butterflies! She is sweet, caring, and the perfect person for Ty.
Ty is processing a lot after a diagnosis he wasn’t expecting. He is pulled out of his own head when a beautiful stranger kisses him out of the blue. As a friendship develops, the harder he falls. Vivian is someone he didn’t realize he needs, but she is helping him sort through so much. Ty is such a wonderful character throughout this book. While he is coming to terms with his autism and mental health, he remains vulnerable with Vivian, helping her realize she deserves unconditional love.
Anne has written two amazing characters who truly do make each other better. They are sweet with each other and truly adore one another. I loved the mental health focus being on the MMC, as this needs to be more of the norm for men to feel safe to share feelings. Within the pages of the books a sweet romance is solidified and captivates readers to keep reading. I truly do hope to see more of this series soon and fall in love with more of Anne’s characters.

The Midnight Defensive is a part of the Alexandria Dominion Hockey Series written by Anne Kemp. This sweet romance book introduces readers to a main character who has recently been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, who is trying to figure how to deal with life, hockey and move forward without making himself stand out even more as different.
In this story, the reader is introduced to Vivian Sullivan, the co-owner of Sullivan's Fine Jewelry, who specializes in helping to make moments memorable for other people. Also, Ty McCade, defenseman for the NHL Dominion Hockey team and recently diagnosed Autism spectrum candidate. This story begins with a bang as Vivian walks up to Ty on the street and kisses him to get away from a man she accidentally made eye contact with in the coffee shop. She made every attempt to politely get away, when that didn't work, well here comes the lip lock. Little does she know that Ty is struggling to master all life is throwing at him currently.
This story is told from both Vivian and Ty's point of view so the next chapters are a variety of experiences from being locked out of the house in only a towel, romantic skates on the ice rink, team building events with the 14U girls, grandma adventures, and learning to process through the eyes of the Spectrum all while having ups and downs. Since the reader gets both views, you can truly get a view at how different the same events can seem to each person, how hard it can be to process when you are overwhelmed with too much, and how confusing it gets when someone overthinks life. The reader is able to watch both leads process the many changes from beginning to end and see what changes need to happen and that change can be good.
I highly recommend this book. I appreciated the sensitivity that Anne used when addressing the many issues those on the spectrum deal with daily as well as being newly diagnosed. But it was important to also see how the important it is for the individuals around the person to respond appropriately too. Thank you Anne for a well written book with great insight into a touchy topic and a great story line. I can't wait to read Eva and Liam's story.

I’ve been excited about Vivian’s story after having met her in The Sunshine Offensive as Juliette’s friend! I loved getting to really know her here from both characters’ perspectives and see the person behind the girl we had met in that book. I had an absolutely great time with seeing how she dealt with and talked about her grandmother as well as their friendship! Her grandmother was a riot! 😂 I also loved seeing Liam again and the friendships he had with both Vivian & Ty. He was so different when he helped the two of them through a couple of crises (understandably when knowing the details of each, but still very interesting). I loved meeting Ty and getting to know more about him as well (I don’t remember if we had officially met him in the first book or if it was in passing). It was interesting to see his perspective on learning about his sensory issues and what he can do to feel better in the midst of them. I loved that he allowed himself to have a support system (by telling people about his discovery) and that they helped him through a lot during the book! It was awesome to see them lift him up and not be afraid to tell him when he backtracked too far that they decided to push him out of his funk.
I’m really hoping that Liam’s story comes soon! (Assuming he was in the series plan…)

I knew this was going to be a winner when the main characters met in a rather unusual way in the first few pages.
Vivian Sullivan designs rings at her family's jewelry store. She has no desire to have any kind of romantic relationship as she can still feel the burns from a previous crash and burn relationship. She is kind and compassionate and loves her grandmother, who actually owns the store. Actually Grandma steals the show at times. I loved her. She was such a daredevil.
Ty McCade is a professional hockey player who has recently found out that he is on the spectrum. It was partial relief to him that explained so many of the things he had gone through in life, but it was also jarring to him. I immediately wanted to reach into the book and hug him. He sees the world a little differently than others, but I agree with Vivian that just makes him "magic".
Somehow Vivian and Ty keep landing in each other's orbit. It seems fate is playing a part in making sure they are placed together. Each chapter was told from the point of view of either Vivian or Ty, which I always enjoy in a book. It allowed me, as the reader, to get inside the heart and mind of the character. It was insightful, emotional and so sweet. It was definitely a slow burn romance, but the chemistry was hot and so swoony.
It would not be an Anne Kemp book if it did not have several great laugh out loud scenes, one of which involved a towel only, a locked door and a pizza delivery. I laughed until I almost cried. The hockey players and their banter amongst their teammates always provides plenty of laughter as well.
This book left a lasting impression on me as I learned a little more about a neurodivergent individual and the mountaintop experiences, as well the valleys. The author wrote about a hot topic subject with great finesse and sensitivity. I would highly recommend this book and this series.

Vivian and Ty . . .
Vivian Sullivan wants to make people happy as she designs engagement rings they can be proud of, despite her own wedding not happening. So when she makes momentary eye contact with a man drinking an oat milk latte, he tries to strike up a conversation about his fungal infection and the antifungal cream that didn't work on his feet. Before she could politely get away from him, he was telling her his gruesome and gross life story, more than she wanted to know. This wasn't even a date... he was a stranger! But he has decided she is interested in him and he wants to hear her dermatology disasters as well if she has any stories to share. Definitely time to escape!
As she dashes out the door, he follows her! As she walks even faster, he keeps pace while continuously talking. In desperation, she looks down the sidewalk and recognizes a hockey player for The Dominion, Ty McCade -- NHL defenseman. She calls out "Hey, sweetie", hurries to him and pulls him close by his shirt as she kisses him. She adds an apology for being late as Ty stands frozen in place, speechless. Then she turns to the stranger with the fungus trouble and explains that she and her boyfriend have to go now. She apologizes to the hockey player as soon as the "foot guy" leaves. At that moment, she hears her name and an old friend, Liam, Lucy's twin brother, walks up to greet her, apparently chuckling that her lips ended up on Ty's! Liam reminds Ty that Vivian's family owns the jewelry store, then they both head off to his car. And when they drive away, Vivian sees Ty's eyes are still on her.

This was SUCH a good hockey romance, and somehow I loved it even more than the first book in the series.
Vivian Sullivan designs engagement rings for other people’s happily ever afters… even though she no longer believes in them herself after her own engagement fell apart. Then one impulsive kiss with a stranger to escape an uncomfortable situation changes everything because that stranger turns out to be Ty McCade, an NHL defenseman who sees Vivian more clearly than anyone else ever has.
Ty was honestly an amazing character. I loved the neurodivergent representation and thought Anne Kemp handled it so thoughtfully and realistically. Ty felt authentic, layered, and incredibly lovable. He notices and understands Vivian in ways that made their relationship feel emotionally deep and meaningful rather than just surface-level attraction.
I also really loved Vivian’s growth throughout the story, both personally and professionally, and her relationship with her grandmother was one of my favorite parts of the entire book.
One thing I appreciated so much was that the emotional conflicts in this story didn’t resolve instantly or unrealistically. Sometimes romances tie everything up in a perfect little bow way too easily, but this one allowed the characters to struggle, grow, and work through things in a believable way. That emotional depth made the romance hit even harder for me.
And the side characters?? I LOVE this friend group. They’re supportive, funny, chaotic in the best way, and genuinely feel like people you’d want in your real life. I already want more books about all of them.

I knew the minute I read the dedication - “This book is for everyone still finding their way…” - that I was HOOKED! Ty and Vivian’s story is hilarious and beautiful and deep and meaningful all in one.
Ty has just learned he is autistic and it has rocked his world. This storyline had me feeling some kind of way as I have many loved ones who have gone through a similar experience. I love the relationship he has with his sister, Emma. She has been such a strong support for him his entire life and she champions him every step of the way. “You know, all that you’re going through doesn’t mean that you’re suddenly a different person…You’re you.” Liam is also such a great friend to Ty, letting him be who he is and helping him through some of the more difficult aspects of living with his new diagnosis.
Vivian’s story was beautiful. I felt like I could relate to her in so many ways as she found her way in life and in love. I was heartbroken for her at the beginning - “People like me…we don’t get the happily ever after” - and cheered her on throughout as she grew into herself and took ownership of her life. I loved her relationship with her spunky, hilarious grandma.
Ty and Vivian together are perfection. From the meet-kiss to the alley, and the jewelry store to the rink, these two are #relationshipgoals! They have such a great connection from the very beginning and it was fun to watch that connection deepen. They are also hilarious! I highlighted so much banter and so many delightful one liners.
This grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, hockey romance is a deep and delightful read full of wonderful characters (shout out to the rest of the Dominion players!), difficult but meaningful experiences, hilarious banter, and swoony kisses. It is the 2nd book in the Alexandria Dominion Hockey series.
Ty has just learned he is autistic and it has rocked his world. This storyline had me feeling some kind of way as I have many loved ones who have gone through a similar experience. I love the relationship he has with his sister, Emma. She has been such a strong support for him his entire life and she champions him every step of the way. “You know, all that you’re going through doesn’t mean that you’re suddenly a different person…You’re you.” Liam is also such a great friend to Ty, letting him be who he is and helping him through some of the more difficult aspects of living with his new diagnosis.
Vivian’s story was beautiful. I felt like I could relate to her in so many ways as she found her way in life and in love. I was heartbroken for her at the beginning - “People like me…we don’t get the happily ever after” - and cheered her on throughout as she grew into herself and took ownership of her life. I loved her relationship with her spunky, hilarious grandma.
Ty and Vivian together are perfection. From the meet-kiss to the alley, and the jewelry store to the rink, these two are #relationshipgoals! They have such a great connection from the very beginning and it was fun to watch that connection deepen. They are also hilarious! I highlighted so much banter and so many delightful one liners.

I am a longtime romance lover, and sports romances, especially hockey ones, continue to be one of my favorite comfort reads. After reading “The Sunshine Offensive,” I was really excited to get Ty’s story. He was one of those characters who stood out to me immediately, so I could not wait to get to know him better. Add in forced proximity and a slow burn romance, and this book was basically calling my name.
I absolutely loved that this story is told in first person with alternating perspectives. It really helped me understand both Ty and Vivian on a deeper level. Ty especially was such a compelling character to read about. Watching him navigate relationships, routines, and the realization that he is on the autism spectrum added so much depth to the story. I appreciated how thoughtfully that aspect of his character was handled. There were moments where my heart absolutely hurt for him, especially when he became overwhelmed and pulled away because he felt like he had let people down. At the same time, seeing the people around him step up and support him made those moments even more meaningful.
I also really enjoyed Vivian. She and Ty balanced each other so well, and I liked how naturally their relationship developed over time. Their quieter moments together honestly ended up being some of my favorite parts of the book. Even though this is a closed-door romance, the chemistry and emotional connection between them still came through very strongly.
All in all, I really loved this book. It had emotional depth, strong character growth, and a romance that felt genuine and earned. I am already looking forward to whatever comes next in this series.

He’s making friends, and his sister, Anna, is coaching a teenage girls hockey team that Ty is helping her with. He also is working on himself, recently being diagnosed with autism. He is seeing a therapist who is helping him deal with the diagnosis and navigating through change.
Vivian Sullivan is happy running her family’s jewelry store, living with her grandmother and designing jewelry, taking over control from her grandmother, who is determined to travel and have adventures with her boyfriend in this stage of her life.
Everything seems fine, but Vivian hasn’t found that special someone to share her life with – if she ever will. She was simply reading, minding her own business at the local coffee shop, when she’s joined by a man she dated once who sees her and decides to join her at her table. Vivian is desperate to leave, so she does, only to be followed by – she can’t even remember his name! As she’s trying to escape, she sees two guys, one of them a hockey player she met – they know mutual friends. So Vivian does what anyone would do in this situation, she walks up to him, saying she’s glad he waited for her, and proceeds to kiss him!! Amazing! I am so happy that I spent the day reading this beautiful love story. It was the sweetest! It’s a closed door romance so it keeps it more about the chemistry and attraction with some low heat, but does not include spicy scenes.
Ty and Vivian’s interaction on the street at the beginning is so much fun!
Ty plays hockey for the Dominion and Vivian runs a jewelry store. Things don’t automatically evolve but once they start to it is so easy to see that they are perfect together! I adore them and I loved watching them fall for each other while spending time together and being there for each other. They had to navigate the challenges that Ty faces daily being on the lower level of the spectrum. He sees and feels things differently but that made him so honest and genuine. He was so easy to fall for. Vivian is a genuine person herself and that makes for the best foundation for them to build on besides their physical attraction.
I just can’t say enough about how loving, and entertaining their story is! Anne does a beautiful job staying true to how life is for a neurodivergent person and I love that we got his point of view so we could understand how he was feeling. It was so important to the story. Vivian is so perfect for him because she does not treat him differently and instead allows herself to understand what certain situations are like for him and how they make him feel. I think I have a girl crush on her. I also loved how music played a part in their story. Actually, I
loved every moment of their story including the bonus epilogue where we get a look into the not too distant future.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC copy of this cozy, sweet hockey romance. Thank you to Anne Kemp and team for allowing me a sneak peek at this delightful novel.
I knew from the very first sentence that I was going to enjoy this book:
“There are few choices in life that I regret more than making eye contact with a man holding an oat milk latte.”
Honestly? Relatable.
I think most women have experienced those awkward social encounters where we’re conditioned to spare a man’s feelings instead of just being direct. Unfortunately, none of my own awkward encounters have ever resulted in me having the confidence to walk up to an NHL acquaintance and plant a kiss on him to avoid rejecting someone else. To be fair, I don’t live in a city with an NHL team, so professional hockey players are not exactly abundant — but I digress.
This chaotic little moment launches Vivian and Ty into the sweetest, coziest romance, and I absolutely adored it.
I loved that the characters are a little older, more mature, and established in their lives. Vivian has a career, a failed engagement, and complicated family dynamics. Ty is a defenseman for an NHL team who has recently been diagnosed with autism and is learning more about himself, his mental health, and how to navigate life with that new understanding.
Not only is he a sexy hockey player who is genuinely kind, but he also takes accountability for his mental health. And did I mention he willingly goes to therapy? Swoon.
This book is sweet, cozy, relatable, and heartfelt. I really appreciated the way Anne Kemp handled mental health with care and compassion, while still keeping the story light, warm, and romantic.
This is basically the Hallmark Channel of hockey romance, and I’m so thankful I got the chance to read an ARC copy.

Ty & Vivian's story is full of surprises... in the best way.
I really loved the characters - in addition to Vivian & Ty, Liam gets Ty & is patient & a great friend... his sister Lucy is Vivian's best friend, and Vivian's Grandma is amazing... I love their relationship & also how she pushes Vivian to move outside her comfort zone.
Ty is complicated... he plays for the NHL & just recently learned he is on the Autism spectrum, likely Aspergers... I like how we get to see him learning about this & that it's a good thing to have that knowledge, so he can learn how to adapt better & thrive (instead of seeing a diagnosis like that as something negative)... I like how patient Liam is with him, how he sees what others don't. I like how Vivian also gets him & they work together well, complementing each other's weaknesses & strengths.
Vivian kissing Ty at their first meeting - hilarious... they knew who each other were, but hadn't officially met... but then they keep getting put together... they have some immediate chemistry/attraction, but I really love their witty banter.
Overall, a very well written book with fun, engaging characters & a story that will make you smile the whole way through.

This story officially gets the award for the most incredible kissing. Vivian's friends live through it vicariously in the story and so do we. The lift? Oh my gracious. Someone give me CPR, stat. The chemistry sizzles without the need for spice and I am so here for it.
But beyond that, there is a really beautiful story that is told here. Teamwork is a top theme as we see Ty rely on his teammates and friends, Vivian turn to others for help, or the sweet girls' hockey team learn to learn to play to their strengths on and off the ice. Anne also represents Ty well as a neurodivergent adult with a fresh diagnosis and how to navigate it. It is clear that it was thoughtfully considered and well-researched. I appreciate that it also normalizes finding resources for health and trauma. If you are looking for a hard-core hockey romance, hockey takes a backseat in this off-season story and allows the relationships to really shine.
I'm in love with this series and can't wait until the next one!

Vivian is miss sunshine and wants to be a fixer for all her friends. She finds herself in a situation where a coffee guy wont leave her alone. So she walks away and finds a single man to kiss. She lives with her Grandmother who keeps her on her toes. Vivian runs their jewelry shop. A customer comes into pick up a wedding ring and Vivian meets her kiss stranger, Ty. Who then proceeds to put on the ring and has to have it cut off. Emma, Ty's sister, talks to Vivian and they team up to do a project for young skate girls at the local rink. Vivian finds out that Ty is a hockey player.
Ty is shy (he has ASD), somewhat intentional in his interactions with Vivian. Emma has to leave town and leaves Ty in charge of the girls skate group and Vivian's art project. Vivian has an emergency and has to leave, leaving Ty to be in charge. Ty is unsure how to handle preteen age girls. The noise generated by the girls throws Ty and he has a meltdown and walks out. He disappears for a few days. It is then that Vivian learns he is ASD.
Ty slowly gets back to his hockey life. And he and Vivian slowly start to connect to where she really sees Ty for who he is. Vivian has her own relationship scars to deal with. But they spend time together and begin a relationship that is good for both them them. A HEA is always great and this story delivers!

As a longtime fan of Anne Kemp, I always look forward to her releases, and Midnight Defensive absolutely did not disappoint! It is just as fantastic, heartwarming, and beautifully written as her previous books, delivering everything I love about her storytelling while bringing fresh, meaningful elements to the ice.
Being the second book in the Alexandria Dominion Hockey series, it was fun to revisit returning characters. Kemp does a wonderful job of maintaining a rich, interconnected world, and the strong friendships and underlying sense of "found family" among the characters truly shine here.
What sets this book apart is how incredibly refreshing the character dynamics are. The main characters, Ty and Vivian, are emotionally intelligent, which makes their connection feel mature, earned, and deeply resonant. The story features excellent ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) representation through the hero, Ty, which was handled with immense care, respect, and authenticity. Watching him navigate his world and seeing the way he and Vivian connect on a genuine level was easily one of the best parts of the book.
Thanks to the dual POV, we get a front-row seat to both characters' inner thoughts. This perspective adds so much emotional depth to the slow-burn romance and allows you to really root for them as they navigate their vulnerabilities and forced-proximity tension.
True to Anne Kemp’s signature style, this is a top-tier closed door romance. The chemistry between Ty and Vivian is undeniable and filled with sizzling tension, proving once again that a romance can be incredibly swoon-worthy and high-emotion without needing explicit content.
