And somehow, impossibly, she has bonded to the Vestra—five lethal guardians sworn to protect their realm… and bound by prophecy to remain unbroken by a mate’s allure.

Three of them feel it—and treat her like a threat that must be contained.

This book had the potential to be so good; instead, we're left with a FMC who drinks tea, soaks and allows everyone around her to control her, take advantage of her and decide every thing about her.
She is weak, passive and unable to stand up for herself.

I have no idea why authors choose to write a story that contains a character that has been abused, tortured and defiled, yet the character suffers zero ill effects from that abuse. FMC allows everyone to touch her all the time, but says at the start that she hates being touched.

I wish this book had more action or hell, even more scenes that didn't involve food, tea, or soaking.

In my opinion, this shouldn't even be called a fantasy book: the world that the characters live in is too much like Earth.

And I can predict that the FMC will forgive Lochlan without any apology or grovel on his behalf. He is an asshole and so mean to her and SHE DOESN'T CARE. She is like a wounded puppy, constantly going to find him and talk to him even though she knows he will be cruel to him.

The timeline/pacing was way off as well. A lot of things didn't make sense in terms of the story.

Maybe one day we'll get an FMC who is strong, means what she says and chooses to fight against controlling and abusive mates. But alas, this isn't that story.

Dumbass nicknames:
Bri, Witchling, spitfire, little jailbird, my girl, bondmate, my dear, dear, little red, red, defunt, trouble, baby.

9% in
And of course, the FMC meets three of her mates and gets assigned a nickname. I mean, why help her reclaim her identity after a year of torture?
I'm so sick and tired of authors that write abused people and don't think about how they would react to the world around them. And that extends to the love interests to the abused. FMC was HEAVILY abused for a long time and yet EVERYONE touches her, puts their lips on her ears, grabs her and she only flinches ONCE.
The way she is acting and talking it's almost like none of that abuse happened.
At this point, some of the plot isn't making sense. People mentioned that her magic set off an alarm only a couple days ago, yet her first display of power was over a year ago. Why did no one come then? Will we get an answer to that question?

20% in -
Everyone keeps touching her. She's acquired more nicknames which she doesn't push back against.
One of her mates is a straight up asshole, and she's too weak to go against him.
In fact, that is her whole personality: weak, meek and defeated.
Her mates are hiding things from her, keeping literal chains on her but keep telling her that she can ask anything and she is free to go.
The FMC is written in such a way that she is just existing, no actual presence in this new life or willing to make herself known. She is allowing everyone to dictate everything about her to her.

76% in -
This entire book has been one large lore dump. Nothing in the plot has been advancing. All we read about is shielding and bonds.
FMC complains all the time about having lack of control as the MMC's control every ounce of her being and she NEVER EVER fights back.
Three of the MMC's hate her and everything that she stands for, yet she still talks to them, is nice to them and makes herself vulnerable to them. They are always around other women and she gets hurt all the time and they don't care.
At this point, I've started to skim the book because I just can't handle any more lore.

My honest opinion of Veil of Ash…is that I’m dying for the next book…I know I just finished but I need more!! Absolutely loved this storyline, great world building, great character arcs, there’s so many tropes in this one!! The slow burn that absolutely burns!! I can’t wait to see what happens next for Bri, I don’t want to spoil anything but I will say that the ending had my jaw drop to the floor and had me screaming!!

I hope Fallon sees my review and makes me an ARC reader for the second book of this series. Because I think I'm going to sleep until February 2027 and wake up to get it.

In this book we follow Brielle who is rescued from prison by a group of Elementals. She is to live with them to acclimate to the new world because apparently she is an Elemental too. The guys don't trust her not only because she seems to not be able to access her powers but also because she is their mate. But that's impossible because there is a prophecy that says that they will never get a mate.

So... this is the best reverse harem/why choose book I've read in MONTHS. If you follow me here or on tiktok you know I read tons of why choose books because it's my favorite genre. And that is the reason that I feel like there aren't any good ones left for me to read!

But, oh boy, this book....

Plot: Excellent balance between romance and action. Amazing pacing. I was watching the pages turning, getting me closer to the end and I DIDN'T WANT IT TO END.

Worldbuilding: Great! Extremely thought out and I instantly love an author that has created something structured and has spent time thinking details and stitching everything together.

FMC: YES! I LOVED HER!

MMCs: AMAZING. NEED MORE.

Side characters: Nothing crazy but still supportive and well written.

Villains: Need some more. I feel like this book is like a prologue to a great universe and a beautiful story, so we don't get to see a villain here and hope to meet them in the next book.

Overall: Yes! Please read ASAP! Fallon if you see this review please marry me and make me your ARC reader!

Holy fuck I really enjoyed this book. I need the next one right now. I loved all of the MMCs and the FMC. Honestly I liked how so many things were repeated, it made the book feel so real like it was actually happening. The ending has me shocked. Wdym that’s is Loch’s mom. Why choose and there wasn’t even any fucking. Honestly. Genius because when it happens it will be so good. But the spice that we did get was sooo good. I need the next book fr omg. Also I read this book so fast I could not put it downnnn.

I guess I was expecting more than just drinking tea, soaking, and learning mental shielding in 579 pages. This book draagggeedddd, and some moments were just very confusing due to dialogue feeling clunky and stilted.

"Lief, too," I add.
She nods her agreement. "Did you see Everett's message?"
"Don't worry about me. Focus on your game." I feel surprisingly nostalgic being on this side of a sporting event.

We are definitely missing something here cause, what about Everett's message? Are we ever going to find out what it is?

And it's very annoying when an MC that has a traumatic background suddenly gets over their trauma very quickly. I'm so tired of reading books like this when, in reality, people don't get over their past within a couple of chapters and only use the verbal defensiveness to avoid said trauma. Having verbal sparring matches is a defensive strategy, but I feel people just claim their character to have trauma just for them to have an attitude and talk back. And for Brielle, she is so insistent on having her own autonomy after being abused while in prison for nearly a year, but lets these guys dictate her life. I get it, she's been through a lot, but come. On! I do not care who you are, fated mates or not. If you do not feel comfortable with people touching you, you stop it and set boundaries.

Do something other than soak and drink tea all day!

Ten weeks of the same routine.

I was lucky enough to be an e-arc reader, but these are my own unhinged thoughts and feelings.

This was so freaking GOOD!! The entire time I was reading it, I was dreading it ending, I just wanted to stay inside the story, so bad. This was the perfect mix of The Bonds That Tie and Shatter Me. I seriously would put it up there with Bonds as my new favorite why-choose, that’s how freaking good it is. The magic, the powers, the bonds, were just so intense and so cool, I really loved learning about their world and how their magic/power systems work. I loved Brielle, I loved her so much. She was such a relatable, strong FMC who has been through so much. She’s so strong, but also you get to see her emotions and vulnerability at play, and I truly enjoyed the balance.

Now let’s they to the guys because oh my gosh, they were so great. With more than one mate, sometimes a few fall short, but every single one of these guys are perfection. My favorite is Lochlan, hands freaking down.

I can’t believe this is the authors debut book! Her writing was so dang good, I was so engrossed in the characters and the world building! The descriptions were done amazingly.

Scarlet is the best BFF in the whole world and I was so glad Brielle had her by her side through all of the craziness of finding out she’s not human.

I thought that this was the absolute perfect why choose, dark fantasy book. I could not have asked for more nor would I want a thing to change. I’m already missing being inside this book and want to re-read so bad because I miss the story and characters so much. I can’t wait for book 2 because that freaking ending has the theories in my head going absolutely bananas!

If you loved The Bonds That Tie series, you’re going to absolutely love this, it’s seriously so freaking good.

Thank you to the author for the gifted e-copy.

“Bonding will increase your power. Some believe that’s why soul mates are so rare, a balance from the universe.”

I burned through this book so quickly. It has everything I like in a romantasy including where her mates have that enemies to lovers vibe. In this case, a good half of the mates are skeptical and the relationship building is a central element and really well developed, which I love!

Vibes: fated mates mixed with enemies to lovers

if you like bonds that tie series, then this series is for you. It’s why choose with bonds that are being denied for various reason and secrets. It was a fun time - you really get to know the characters. The ending was a pretty mild cliffhanger, but I’m curious to see where it goes from here and what else is revealed.

Overall 5/5
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up loving this book—especially the slow-burn elements and the way the plot builds over time. It’s definitely more of a “grower” than a “show-er” 😅… although, the men in this story might actually be both, if you know what I mean.

I really enjoyed how Brielle’s story unfolds—or rather, the mystery surrounding the lack of her story and how that develops throughout the book. And that cliffhanger?? I’m OBSESSED!! I can't believe I have to wait until September for book 2!

Plot 4/5
It took a little time to get going, in my opinion, but it was engaging enough to keep my attention—and I'm glad I stuck with it! There were a few high-intensity (non-sexual) moments that felt a bit abrupt and left me slightly confused, but they didn’t take away from the overall story, especially since there weren’t many of them.

The mystery behind Brielle's background and the political aspects have me super interested to see where book 2 takes us, especially after that fricking cliffhanger!

Characters 5/5
I love the men in this book. Daire, Griffin, Lochlan, Kai, and Holden... delicious. yum. yes. Daire and Griffin are the golden retrievers, and the other three are giving us the slow burn, yearning, tension that we crave.

I also love Scarlet as the female bff.

We could go deeper on the relationships, and I'm hopeful we will in the coming books!

World 3/5
Bryxton is interesting, but I don't feel like I've got any deep ties to the world yet.

This unfortunately fell very flat for me, which sucks because I was super excited to read this.

This felt very long and at the same time nothing really happened. It was the same things every chapter and it felt like a massive lore dump that just never got developed. It was the fmc drinking tea, soaking in a hot spring, “practicing” her powers, and getting walked on by the men in her life.

I also got really tired of the fmc just being the biggest doormat to ever doormat. I needed her to get a grip and grow a backbone.

I really enjoyed the world-building in this one and how much groundwork was laid for what’s to come. The why choose dynamic? Absolutely delectable.

Griffin and Daire had me hooked right away. Lochan is definitely the most closed off, but I have a feeling he’s going to end up being a favorite. Holden’s academic side was such a fun touch, and Kai gives off big kid energy in the best way.

Brielle is still coming into herself, trying to understand everything around her, but you can already tell she’s going to be powerful and not someone to mess with. There’s a lot of anger tied to her past, and I’m excited to see how that shapes her.

There’s also a lot of magic still to uncover, along with a mystery element that really pulls you in and keeps you wanting more.

Scarlet was such a breath of fresh air as her best friend, and Gwen added such a fun, grounding presence to the house. The found family that’s building here is strong, and I can’t wait to continue this series.

OMG. This book had me in an absolute chokehold.

Veil of Ash is easily one of my favorite reads of the year, and honestly, I knew it was headed in that direction pretty early on. Fallon Hendrix delivered everything I love in a romantasy: fascinating world-building, compelling characters, high stakes, political intrigue, fated mates, and a slow-burn romance that had me completely obsessed.

The story follows Brielle, who has spent her entire life believing she's human. Then everything changes when she is taken from Prison (which is a whole fascinating story in itself that gets explored throughout the book) and brought to the realm of Bryxton. There she discovers that she is a rare Soul Elemental and somehow connected to a Vestra of five powerful guardians who were never supposed to have mates.

The catch? She has imprinted on them as their mate.

Which would be great... except these five men are part of a prophecy that says their hearts will beat but never feel. A mate was never supposed to be part of their future.

And yet, here comes Bri.

To make matters even more complicated, the vestra is completely divided when it comes to Bri. Two of the guardians are immediately protective and ready to burn the world down for her. The other three? Not so much. They want nothing to do with the bond, Bri, or the complications she brings into their lives. The push and pull between them was absolutely delicious, and I was completely invested in every single interaction.

What I loved most was how attached I became to all of the characters. Bri is incredibly easy to root for. She is thrown into a world she doesn't understand, surrounded by people who don't know whether to protect her or fear her, and I was cheering for her every step of the way.
And the bondmates? I ate it up.

Every time Bri was paired with a different guardian, I was locked in. I wanted all the conversations, all the tension, all the reluctant moments, all the soft moments, and all the arguments. Fallon did such a great job making each of the five guardians feel distinct that I found myself looking forward to every new interaction.

This book somehow gave me everything I wanted: fated mates, forced proximity, political intrigue, magical training, high stakes, emotional tension, and a slow-burn romance that actually felt earned. The world felt rich and layered without becoming overwhelming, and there were so many mysteries unfolding that I never wanted to stop reading.

Honestly, this book was just so deliciously addictive. The kind of book where you tell yourself you'll read one more chapter and suddenly it's two hours later.

If you love why choose romantasy, fated mates, protective heroes, complicated prophecies, and tension-filled relationships, I cannot recommend this one enough.

Now please excuse me while I impatiently wait for book two because I need it immediately.

Veil of Ash absolutely consumed me.
If you love why choose romantasy with academy settings, fated mates, morally grey MMCs, insane tension, and emotional relationship development that actually feels believable, this book is a MUST read.

What completely sold this story for me was the character dynamics. With a larger cast, it’s so easy for relationships to feel rushed or underdeveloped, but every single connection in this book felt intentional. The chemistry between the characters is incredible, and watching the relationships slowly evolve was honestly one of the best parts of the story.

Some of the MMCs fall first, hard, while others start out suspicious, guarded, and very enemies-to-lovers coded — which creates SUCH good tension throughout the book. The emotional progression feels natural the entire way through, from reluctant alliances and curiosity to trust, obsession, friendship, and eventually love.
And the fated mates trope? SO well done. Normally insta-love/fated mates can feel repetitive or overly cliché, but this book balances it perfectly with emotional depth, tension, skepticism, and character growth. The bonds feel powerful without replacing the actual relationship development.

The premise was also so addictive. Our FMC starts in the human world where she’s imprisoned and experimented on after accidentally revealing her powers. Meanwhile, in another dimension, her mates can actually feel her existence through their magic — despite believing for years they would never have a mate. So when they finally find and rescue her, there’s immediately this mix of protectiveness, distrust, fascination, and tension that keeps the entire story insanely engaging.
The writing was really fantastic, especially when it came to emotions, dialogue, and the evolving relationships between the characters. Every interaction felt charged with meaning, and the tension had me completely hooked from start to finish.

If you loved Her Vicious Beasts, Bonds That Tie or darker academy romantasy with emotionally intense relationships, you need to add Veil of Ash to your TBR immediately.

Dark academia
Elemental magic
Found family

Slow burn
Monsters & magic
Fated mates

Thank you to the author for sending me a free ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is the first book in the series, so there’s definitely a lot of worldbuilding and information to take in. It starts a little slower because of that, but honestly I didn’t mind because I found the world fascinating.

Brielle was such a lovable FMC. Imagine finding out you’re not actually human and getting dragged into a completely different realm full of monsters, magic, and five mates you never asked for. Her reactions were honestly so relatable and sometimes hilarious.

What I loved most was that all five relationships felt different. None of the MMCs blended together, which can sometimes happen in why choose romances. The tension, especially with the more skeptical and broody men, kept me hooked.

The world itself was my favorite part. The elemental magic, academy setting, political drama, monsters beyond the wards, shapeshifters, and found family vibes all came together so well. It felt immersive without being overwhelming.

I genuinely can’t believe this is a debut novel. The writing was engaging, the characters were memorable, and that ending has me already wanting book two.

If you enjoyed the Demonica series by Larissa Ione, I think you’ll have a great time with this one.

This definitely didn’t have to be almost 600 (!) pages considering that nothing major actually happened. Throughout basically the entire book, Bri is preparing to be interrogated by the Council and it’s made out to be extremely high stakes but then the actual interrogation was kind of underwhelming? Why then was this made out to be such a big deal?

Still, I enjoyed this book! The slow-burn was actually taking its time and the story, despite it really being rather mundane, kept me engaged.

I’ll give this a solid 3.5 stars. I’m not sure if I will be reading the second book coming out next year though, especially if it’s another 600ish pages.

What an amazing debut novel. I'm blown away!

It's now going to be a tough wait for book 2, but I suspect the wait is going to be well worth it because I'm sure it's going to be amazing too. And until that time, this book is going to stick in my thoughts and I'm certain I will be doing some re-reads.

Thanks to the author for bringing me on this magical journey. Looking forward to more!

I enjoyed this story and it’s an entertaining read for you to lose yourself in. One of my biggest pet peeves is a fmc who doesn’t ask questions and this girl delivers and more.

It does get a little repetitive with the training, then the soaking exploits but it was nice that they didn’t rush the whole mate bond being formed storyline.

Will definitely be picking up book 2

THIS BOOOOOOOOKKKKK!!!! the ending (no spoilers) has me on the edge of my SEAT for book 2 in the best and worst way possible (worst because why is it not already in my hands?!)!!!! I am so thankful to have found this story and had the opportunity to read the ARC and fall into what very well might be one of my new favorite fantasy worlds.

Bryxton is so BEAUTIFUL in every meaning of the word. From the beautiful scenery to people (sorry, Elementals) - I wish I could find three hot men to whisk me away from my life and take me there myself!

Brielle is such a beautifully complex character, with completely valid trust issues and such a beautiful heart with so much eagerness for trust and closeness, despite the cruelty of the world. I am so thankful to have been able to get to know her in these pages, and her relationships with each of the guys is so special and unique.

This book had so many moments where I felt like I had no idea where we were going next, but everything always melded together so perfectly. From romantic tension, beautiful friendships, and Brielle finding a spark of confidence in herself, the progression of this story is so wonderful. I am so so so excited for book 2!

3.5 ⭐️ GOOD IDEAS BUT I WAS LOST IN THE WORLD BUILDING FOG 🖤🔥

This had SO many things I normally eat up:
✨ fated mates
⚔️ five guardians
🖤 split harem drama
🔮 prophecy chaos
🔥 elemental magic

On paper?? This should’ve been a five star banger for me.

But… I just didn’t fully gel with it 😬

The world building is HEAVY. Like… we’re being handed lore, politics, magic systems, prophecy rules, council drama and I was just sat there blinking like “wait… who… what… where am I??” 🤦‍♀️

It felt like the story took quite a while to actually get going, and by the time it did, I was still trying to keep up with everything being introduced.

The split guardian dynamic is SUCH a good idea though.
Two ready to burn the world for her 🔥
Three treating her like a walking red flag 🚩

Elite concept. Loved that.

But I wanted more character development to really sell it. I never fully connected with Brielle or the guardians, which made it harder to invest in the relationships.

And with a why choose, you NEED me emotionally attached or I’m just like… okay which one is which again?? 😂

That said, I can see this working really well for readers who love:

✨ slower burn romantasy
🖤 heavy lore and politics
🔥 multiple love interests
⚔️ training + prophecy vibes

Loads of potential and cool ideas, but the heavy world building and slower pacing meant it didn’t fully click for me… though I can definitely see others loving it.

Well this was entertaining! I like that we can separate one character from the other specially in a why-choose. I think people should read it and then make up their own opinion about it. I for one enjoyed it and definetily wish I hadn't read it at the same time because now I have to wait a whole year for the next one. Now here are my thoughts about it (may contain a spoiler):

I think it was a good first book in a why choose series. It was nice to see how the author made sure we could identify each of the MMC's given the number for this group is not small. Now in terms of plot... there wasn't much of it other than getting to know the characters a little and setting the tone for the series but I didn't dislike it, in any case, I appreciated that they got to know eachother individually. I do disagree with some reactions from both the FMC and the MMC's in terms of their situation... there was just not enough information nor reason for them to have any real conflict between them. If it had been me being worried my family might be in danger I would have dug into her brain and dissected it immediately but that didn't happen so the urgency and reluctance toward her fell apart for me on their first week together. She even gave them permission to go into her brain at one point so wtf was their problem? FMC was very OBVIOUSLY traumatized but somehow I feel like it was a bit overlooked -by the FMC just being on the verge of a breakdown but composed and accepting of her circumstance the next- and the MMC's were also not the brightest because how come they read that prophecy and immediatly thought the only possible interpretation was that it was impossible for them to have a mate? Anyway... we also had many scenes where we took a look at the FMC's past and trauma... there were barely any scenes where us as readers could see and understand the depth of her trauma, I'm so sorry but it was mostly poking and prodding a mind that was supposed to be on the verge of collapse and her memories were... -mostly- mild. There were maybe 3 memories that I could actually sympathize with as a reader because they were indeed F* up but the rest? they weren't good but from what we got to see it was mostly mild in comparison to her reactions and depressive thoughts and I just kept waiting to see how she had ended up in such a mental state but the most traumatic events barely made an apperance and I think I like The bonds that tie series better when it comes to handling this topic (this book kept reminding me of that series constantly). Almost the entire book is basically spent inside their house and that was boring to me. Also the MMC's did NOT grovel enough in my opinion she moved on from their screw ups far to easily. That being said, I think all of this can easily be overlooked when you read the book. The book kept me entertained and I was pleasantly surprised that It managed to keep my attention until the very end of the book. I recommend reading it and not being too nit-picky when reading it.

Did you pick up Veil of Ash expecting lethal warriors and non-stop action? Put those expectations away right now. Grab a blanket, a mug of tea, and a moonberry tart, because you just stepped into a cozy romantasy.

If you love low-spice slow burns, and a narrative that feels like a warm hug rather than a battlefield, this is highly recommended. Just don't go in expecting a war.
