Despite the Duke: Regency Historical Romance

Rate this book
London’s most notorious libertine meets his match in an opinionated young lady, despite his best intentions.

Lady Sophia doesn’t suffer fools. Her blunt manner of speaking hasn’t earned her many suitors, unlike her stunning older sister. Long regarded as the less attractive, troublesome daughter of Lord Canterbell, Sophia is more surprised than anyone when the Duke of Roxboro approaches her at a ball. Several glasses of champagne later and Sophia finds herself alone in the gardens with the most notorious duke in London, breathless with anticipation when he steals a kiss and claims to want to court her.

Sophia is thrilled…until Roxboro abandons her to the gossips.

Alexander, the Duke of Roxboro is a libertine. He enjoys women, spirits, gambling and the occasional opium den, though not necessarily in that order. Rarely out in polite society given his proclivities, he’s surprised when Lord Canterbell accuses him of compromising his daughter, Lady Sophia. Canterbell demands Alexander do the honorable thing and wed her.

Alexander insists has never seen Lady Sophia in his life. She’s lying. He didn’t attend the Perswick ball, nor did he compromise the girl.

Or did he?

Kathleen Ayers has been a hopeful romantic since the tender age of fourteen when she first purchased a copy of Sweet Savage Love at a garage sale while her mother was looking at antique animal planters. Since then she’s read hundreds of historical romances and fallen in love dozens of times. In particular she adores handsome, slightly damaged men with a wicked sense of humor. On paper, of course.

Kathleen lives in Houston and is married with one college aged son and two very spoiled dogs.

This was probably more of a 3.5 for me based on plot and development, but rounding it up as it is Kathleen Ayers and her writing with subtle humor is always great.

Not sure what didn’t quite work for me in this book. The MCs are the slightly-always-drunk, libertine Alexander and outspoken Sophia. She is a wonderful independent FMC, but Alexander was hard to get to like. Their interaction was more enemies than lovers, banter at times even hostile and when they finally got to lovers part, it felt a bit sudden. The interaction from there improved significantly. They made a great and loyal couple and Alexander was mending the error of his ways. Still, I felt the opportunity was missed for his character development over time and on page with the reader.

There is a mystery weaved through the story and very surprisingly this ends on a cliffhanger, so we’ll get to wait until the next book to get to the evil masterminds behind the nefarious events. Supporting characters were great and I am looking forward to reading some of their stories.

Despite the Duke was funny and fast paced. I’ve read recent series by this author and love the gritty HR tone. This one sets the stage for more and much of the plot is still a mystery at the end. Lady Sophia had so many great one liners and Duke Alexander is not half bad once he sobers up a bit. I was annoyed with lack of full out hookups till the end. Especially if I have to hear about character cock twitching and nipple puckers throughout. But that is the usual from this author and I still enjoy the story.

Compromised by a notorious duke in a garden at a ball, Lady Sophia has no desire to marry him even with her father's insisting. Alexander, the Duke of Roxboro, doesn't't remember attending the ball or kissing her. Sophia is the youngest Canterbell daughter, not as beautiful and vivacious as her older sister. She doesn't tolerate Alexander's behavior as a rake and isn't afraid to tell him. Instead of putting him off, he is attracted to her wit and honesty. Secrets and lies surround them. Very funny and romantic. Descriptive sex.

The H was hard to like at first, but there are reasons for his odd behaviour. The h had been innocently caught up in something beyond their imagination. It was a bit messy and not my favourite by one of my favourite authors.

This book was fun and funny!

A case of mistaken identity which leads to a hastily arranged marriage between a drunken sot of a Duke and lady who everyone deems a shrew.

The banter and pettiness are absolutely hilarious. And I just simply adore anything that makes me laugh out loud.

Both Sophia and Alexander end up being really endearing to me and he does the thing where he pretends he doesn't know her name so he gets more and more ridiculous throughout the book

I think they both fall for each other sooner than either of them realise it, there's some interference from external sources that just annoyed me and that I wanted explored more in depth - like some of the motivations of some of the other characters are interesting.

This is a good start to a series and there's definitely more to come considering how it ends. I wish there was a bit more fleshing out but I can only imagine that will happen in future books.

I love Kathleen Ayers' writing. This is my 34th book by her. I read one of her books in 2016 but didn't picked her up again faithfully in 2019 and now she is one of my top favorite authors. For my birthday a few years back, my DIL bought some of my favorite Kathleen Ayers books and met with her to personally sign them for me. What a fantastic gift and I'll always treasure them. She has such hot and yummy sex in her books. Always a sign of a good book. 😊

I loved this book. I loved the story. I loved the characters, Sophia and Alex. It was so different than anything I've read in a awhile. I'm sorry I don't say much in my reviews because anytime you really want to right about the "good" stuff, to me it gives away too many spoilers so I don't say anything. Just know, it was damn good. 😊 It wasn't really a cliffhanger per se but definitely will be reading the rest in this series to find out what happens because it really was damn good. Adding it to my favorite book read for March, 2026.

I liked the setup of a scandalous duke forced into a marriage of convenience, it’s a trope I usually eat up, and there were definitely some entertaining moments and banter along the way. However, the pacing felt really inconsistent. Some parts dragged while major plot points were rushed, so the emotional payoff never quite landed for me.

My biggest issue was the central mystery: who was pretending to be the duke? It felt like the entire premise the story was built on, but it mostly disappeared for long stretches and then was suddenly resolved right at the end. Because of that, the stakes never fully developed and the resolution felt a bit abrupt.

Overall, it was an okay regency romance and an easy read, but it didn’t end up being as memorable as I hoped. That said, I'll be watching for the next in the series because I'm definitely a fan of Ayers stories.

Thank you for the early copy for review

Lady Sophia Canterbell's blunt manner hasn’t earned her many suitors. Long regarded as the less attractive, troublesome daughter of a politically powerful lord, Sophia is more surprised than anyone when handsome but rakish Alexander, Duke of Roxboro, approaches her at a ball and claims to want to court her. Sophia is thrilled…until she is compromised and Alexander insists has never seen Lady Sophia in his life. He claims she's lying, he didn’t attend the ball, nor did he kiss her. They can't both be right, or can they?

This is the first book in the London Vices series. I liked a lot of things about this story but, although the main couple received a happy ending, there are a lot of loose threads left dangling for the next book. As one can guess, there are secret sibling shenanigans a foot and I loved the set up to Alexander's and Sophia's adversarial relationship. I might feel a little differently as the series progresses, but my only complaint is that it took too far into the book for things to come to a head and the ending felt a bit rushed and unresolved. On the flip side, I'm anxious to see what happens in the next story! I'd recommend this book to anyone who has patience for cliffhangers and interconnected tales.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The prologue of this story was really interesting. It definitely caught my attention, and I knew that this story would have some different tropes than what I am used to reading. However, after the prologue I struggled because I think Sophia and Alexander were really nasty to each other. They weren't just trading barbs, but the insults really cut deep. They came off super immature. I will say around the 50 percent mark, there were moments of hope that kept me reading as I was frustrated with both of them. Kathleen Ayers does have a way of winning me over when I'm not loving the book, and I think she did that here. If you asked me what I would have rated this book after the first half, it would have been much lower. But things take a turn for the better after Alexander is attacked and almost killed. Sophie nurses him back to health, and they create a deep and caring bond for each other. Alexander really matured once Sophie got him to stop drinking. He stopped relying on his weird uncle (who I think is the one orchestrating the attacks on his brother and nephew), and really came into his own as the duke.

I read and read all day to get to the end because I wanted to know who the villain was, but alas a cliffhanger. There's just no way in my opinion that Oakhurst was the villain. It just seems way to easy for it to end that way.

I will be curious to see how that all plays out in book 2!

We have Alexander, the Duke of Roxboro, a renown sot and Lady Sophia, known as the sister to the pretty one, combative and far too intelligent to attract suitors. A fateful party brings them into the same orbit in a scandalous compromising position and unfortunately for both them, a wedding must happen or she’ll be ruined.

They set up was great and their antagonistic relationship was hilarious. They thrived on insults and snarky digs, even as they slowly fell for the each other. I really liked the heart of the story and how Sofia made Alexander want to be a better man just by being who she is, much to his uncles chagrin since he has plans and designs of his own. Alexander finds himself inexplicable drawn to Sofia, not despite of but because of her sharp wit and refusal to bow down to his duchal position. And in turn, Sofia is finally seen for who she is, not only accepted but appreciated after a lifetime of being told ‘why can’t you be more like your sister’. It was an excellent match even if it took them a while to realise it! The relationship developed naturally when things take a turn and I loved that once Alexander was in, he was all in. Their back and forth was great and a lot of fun to read.

Alongside the romance we have a plot set up in the tense and thrilling prologue, someone who’s fault the whole marriage is. I really wanted to uncover more of this (I could see many secrets and threads to explore) but the ending has set us up for more details in the next book so I’m very intrigued to see what this person has been up/ who raised them/ how they lived etc and what, if any, a reconciliation would look like.

Overall a quick fun read with an intriguing background plot I can’t wait to learn more about. The relationship dynamic was entertaining and It ended wonderfully.

I was able to get an advanced copy and as usual Kathleen does not disappoint. We meet Lady Sophia, not shy about expressing an opinion. Her entire family pretty much ignore her and one night at a ball as she is enjoying her champagne, the Duke of Roxboro approaches her for a little stroll in the garden. Sometimes champagne will affect a girls inhibition until she is caught and he runs. The only thing is- he wasn't the real Duke. But details. She is embarrassed and ruined in the eyes of society, so she and her father confront the Duke to force him to make things right. He doesn't think he was the one, but he doesn't quite remember. So was it him or someone else? Either way, he has no choice but to make things right, and he does. But his uncle tells him that if he doesn't consummate the marriage, he can annul it in 6 months, how hard can that be?. You know what they say about good intentions, right? Enjoy!!! And there is a reason why there will be 3 books.

I was so excited to receive this ARC from Dragonblade and NetGalley. Thank you for this chance to give an honest review. I think this is my favorite book of Kathleen Ayers to date. I loved the characters and the story drew me in from the first sentences of the prologue. A duke's carriage is attacked by thugs. The duke is killed, the duchess escapes, and survives long enough to give birth to triplets before dying following their birth. One will be the future Duke, the fate of the other two is uncertain at the end of the prologue. Lady Sophia Simmons is a blue-stocking and has no interest in society. She is the overlooked, outspoken, second daughter. Her sister Mara is the beautiful perfect sister.
While at the Perswick ball, Sophia notices the Duke of Roxboro, a libertine who never attends balls. They make eye contact and “ruins” her in the garden. Or did he? When confronted with his indiscretion, he denies it vehemently, but is forced to marry her to save her reputation.

This is an enemies-to-lovers story. I loved getting to know all of the MCs. Alexander and Sophia have much more depth than one would think at first. There is plenty of plot twists and uncertainty, as well as scenes where I laughed out loud.
Great start to this new series and I look forward to the future books in the London Vices series.

I eagerly await each of Kathleen Ayers new novels as she is one of my favourite authors.
The Prologue is intense and full of angst and trauma that I found acceptable as it set the background for the remainder of the novel.
The writing is of Kathleen Ayers usual outstanding quality and the storyline I found unique.
I continued to feel a level of angst throughout the read as I felt the prologue events remained unresolved and as I felt strongly in regards to who was behind the events of the prologue and why, I am now eagerly anticipating the remainder of the novels in the series. My feelings are that there will be mystery threads running through the following books in the series that will eventually uncover a culprit and shine light on the mystery.
For me personally there are a few unanswered questions that I have regarding this story that I hope will unfold in the following novels.
I must say though that the extent of Alexander’s rakish ways had me concerned more so than other similar characters I have read.
Overall an extremely well written novel at a length I prefer to read and well worth the time I took to read it.
I was given the privilege of reading this novel as an ARC from Dragonblade and NetGalley, the opinions I have expressed are mine alone and are freely given.

The duke of Roxboro has been living most of his adult life in a perpetual state of intoxication but as foxed as he might be most of the time, he never completely loses his whereabouts… so when he doesn’t remember attending a ball and compromising a girl he immediately suspects deception.
Sophia has lived her life shadowed by her sister’s beauty, invisibile or an afterthought most times, so when the duke of Roxboro singles her out and kisses her with promises of courtship she’s over the moon… but the very next day he denies even attending the ball and accuses her of deception.
Intriguing, engaging, gripping, sometimes funny and with a constant undercurrent of sexual tension. Sophia’s insecurities are heartbreaking but her investment in the marriage is commendable and Alex’s outspoken and disrespectful behavior is an armor only she will be able to break.
The epilogue suggests there might be more books in this series and that Alex and Sophia will make an appearance.

I always get excited when Kathleen starts a new series and this one has great potential. I very much appreciated the opportunity to do an ARC review of this book.

The prologue pulls you in right from the beginning as the Duke and Duchess of Roxboro are tragically attacked in their carriage resulting in the fast passing of the Duke and the setting in of preterm labor for the duchess. With triplets no less! Despite being so early in the book this actually came as a shock for me and I think adds a very interesting layer to the series - the triplets are separated at birth.

Flash forward and we get my favorite kind of love story, an enemies to lovers arc between the new Duke of Roxboro, Alexander, and blue stocking, Lady Sophia. You won’t be able to put this one down! Looking forward to the rest of the books in this series!

Oh I definitely need to read the next book in this series. It is a historical romance with a touch mystery. Our hero has been in danger most of his life. It looks as if the villain was found , but I don't believe it. He has been much too easily led.
Our heroine has been overlooked by everyone just because she is not as beautiful as her sister.
We obviously know who the mysterious "double" is , but not our hero. That doesn't necessarily mean the "double" is a villain. Hopefully this gives us a three part series. I'm looking forward to reading the rest. I love the characters and the storyline.
Great fun.

This steamy historical romance is the first in a series, ending on a cliffhanger. This is also why I deducted a star. The prologue and epilogue promise political and criminal intrigue surrounding the Dukedom of Roxboro, with a duke being murdered and the current duke having identical twin brother(s?) without his knowledge. However, the novel focuses mostly on Lady Sophia and Alexander Roxboro's enemies to lovers romance. It left many questions regarding the intrigue unanswered, even though the author alludes to the intrigue throughout the novel.

Nevertheless, I thought the enemies to lovers trope was well executed, with plenty of banter. Side characters are introduced, which makes me wonder who will be the next main character. I guess I'll have to read the next novel in the series once it comes out as I'm very curious how the story and intrigue will be further developed. All in all a very enjoyable read!

Many thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

This first book in the London Vices series was a delightful and refreshing mistaken identity, forced marriage historical romance. The drama, intrigue, murder, and other interesting twists were very engaging. The characters' angst, witty banter, and humorous issues were very entertaining. I enjoyed the shocking turn of events, which changed everything and left me wanting more. I highly recommend reading!

I fell in love with Ayers characters when I met the Beautiful Barringtons. The Deadly Sins cemented her as one of my must read authors. This fresh new series introduces us to Lady Sophia and Alexander. An opinionated heroine and a Unapologetic Rakish Duke? What is not to love. The story will hook you from the start starting with the heroes tragic backstory. It does end with a cliffhanger of sorts so be prepared to be screaming-what happens next?

I received an advance review copy of this book, and I absolutely devoured it. I read it in two days and genuinely had a hard time putting it down! Alexander and Sophie’s dynamic kept me hooked from the start.

I love a strong female main character, especially when a brooding duke or rake meets his match, and this book delivered exactly that. The FMC’s intelligence and wit pulled me in immediately. There’s something so satisfying about watching a brooding, emotionally guarded hero confront feelings he never expected. This enemies-to-lovers, forced marriage story hit so many of my favorite tropes.

From the very beginning, I felt connected to the characters. Even the side characters were well done, some you love instantly, some you don’t, but all felt intentional and layered.

The ending sets up the next book in the series very well. I would have liked a few more answers in this installment, but I suspect those will unfold as the series continues. If anything, it left me curious and eager for what’s next.

I received an advance review copy of this book for through Net Galley. Thank you to the author and Dragonblade Publishing for the opportunity. This review reflects my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed this book, especially the mystery woven throughout the story. The plot kept me engaged and curious about what would happen next, and I appreciated how the tension unfolded little by little rather than relying on obvious twists.

One of the strongest parts of the book was the character development. The characters felt real and layered, and it was satisfying to watch them grow and change as the story progressed. Their motivations and struggles added depth to the story and made it easy to stay invested in what was happening.

The only downside for me was that some of the romantic scenes were a bit steamier than I personally prefer. That said, if readers enjoy more passionate romance, they may not mind this at all. Overall, though, the story was well written, engaging, and memorable, and I’m glad I picked it up.

3.5 I am a little torn on this story, I enjoyed the second half more than the first half. The first half of the book, they were both very cruel to each other. It didn't feel like banter , It felt like they were both being demeaning to the other. Sophia, I did understand why she acted this way as her sister and her mom were both cruel to her. But there wasn't really anything to make her likeable which made her switch to devoted really confusing. I think a friend would have made her a little more human. Alexander was an slimeball but not with the charm the author typically gives her jerk heros. I also felt like a lot of things I want to know more about or a satisfying ending with (particularly her family). I did like once they started to get along, the banter felt more fun. Oh and I loved her wedding night talk with her maid, that was really hilarious. Even Alexander felt less cruel in the second half of the book. And his butler at his estate was a nice character as well. I think that a lot of the plot in the second half felt rushed and it could have been fleshed out a little bit more in the first part.

I do need to know what happens with the gentleman with the freckle.

2.5 star. ARC reader so no spoilers.

I have read most of Ayers work and enjoy her as an author. Although this one feels like it misses the mark. The first 2/3 of the book I enjoyed. I love enemies to lovers trope and the banter between them was good. However it just feels unfinished. Yes there was a cliff hanger at the end. But there seemed to be so many points which either seemed rushed or unresolved. If you have a hero who starts off awful he needs to have a redemption arc. He just seems to have woken up one day and decided that he's not a drunken reprobate. I feel very disappointed by it.

I'm not sure why authors don't tell you a book ends in a cliffhanger.

I didn't like the first half of the book. The fmc was very unlikeable, she looked down on everyone including her family. Why? I have no idea. She was very "I'm not like the other girls" and rude on top of that. There's not much to say about the mmc except he was an alcoholic and a whore. Thats pretty much his whole personality. We know more about what he's done with everyone else except we got a couple of scenes with the fmc. They spent most of the book arguing and being hostile towards one another.

The last third of the book, he gets injured and the fmc nurses him back to health. In his delirium, he keeps thinking that shes a trollop and she gets to hear about his debauchery. I'd be surprised if didn't have a number of stds. But their relationship changed after that, very suddenly. At least that part was somewhat enjoyable, they weren't fighting anymore. There wasn't a conclusion to who's trying to kill him, even though it seems pretty obvious.

**there is no cheating after they're engaged, but on more than one occasion he thinks about and tries to but nothing happened.

Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is a new series by an author whose previous books I have enjoyed very much.

This starts out with a prologue with an origin story of the MMC, who was birthed in the midst of murder and mayhem. Alexander Viceroy, Duke of Roxboro, was born the night his father was murdered by brigands with his heavily pregnant mother in their coach, witnessing the death of her spouse, and after escaping, found herself seeking mercy at a stranger's doorstep. There, she died after birthing Alexander, but managing to send a message for her child, the heir, to be secured by his remaining family, her husband's younger brother, Damon.

Alexander was raised by his uncle as one of his own, but his uncle has a strong sense of control and duty to the dukedom, and allowed Alexander to become a notoriously indulged libertine, while he controlled the management of the dukedom. Alexander, wealthy, handsome, and free, was happy to allow this to continue; freely seeking his pleasures at will, with no limits, other than the one caveat of no debauching of innocents. His uncle has convinced him over the years that his duplicitous and scheming mother had trapped his father in marriage for the title and wealth, and he died because of her lover, and Damon was determined to save Alexander from the same fate.

Except Alexander becomes embroiled in a scandal when just such a situation happens, when Lady Sophia, the younger daughter of Lord Canterbell, the Speaker of the House, is seen in a compromising situation by a notorious gossip with Alexander at a ball. When confronted by the infuiated father, Alexander vigorously denies being the man in the scenario, knowing his own habits and not remembering either the lady or the ball at all. But the problem is, Alexander regularly drinks to excess and his memory is patchy and unreliable at best. Because of Damon's political aspirations, he takes control of the situation with a plan that will placate the influential Canterbell, by wedding his daughter to the Duke, but with a plan to have the marriage dissolved in the future.

Lady Sophia, a woman who does not fit into the typical mold of Society women, being a woman of strong opinions, and lacking regard for the usual graces and accomplishments expected of young ladies of her ilk. She despises the situation she finds herself in, but is pressured by her family to fall in line.

She and Alexander appear to be opposites, starting off their relationship at loggerheads with general disrespect and striking off sparks, but there is an underlying attraction that becomes undeniable.

This is a story with some striking characters full of flaws such as pride, drunken licentiousness, and bullheaded stubborness, and fulminating dislike of the situation and each other. But ultimately, as Sophia and Alexander are forced to live together and overcome unexpected challenges they learn to see each other beyond the surface and start to care for each other, with a desire to make their marriage work and overcome their pasts, especially Alexander who takes control of his life and future from his uncle.

Despite how unlikeable some of the characters are at times, namely Sophia and Alexander, I grew to appreciate and like them because they showed that there was more than their surface pride and prickliness. There are a lot of questions that developed over the course of the story, that I am hoping will be answered in the course of the series. Such is the uncle working against Alexander? At times, I could not tell because of his enabling and control of Alexander's life. What is the truth of his parent's relationship - Damon's account and belief is contrary to the prologue. There is more, but I also do not want to spoil some elements of the story as well, but I am curious and intrigued as to where the ultimate arc of the story will go...

I loved this book! 😁😁
Kathleen Ayers is one of my favourite authors. She writes with great depth and detail and her stories are always so interesting and fun. I have not been disappointed with any of her books. This book was devoured in a short time because I didn’t want to put it down.

There is a prologue describing the events of Alexander’s birth and the tragic loss of his parents.

Twenty nine years later…..

Lady Sophia Simmons has never felt seen in society. Her twin sister Mara seems to have inherited all the looks, demure qualities and personality that attracts boring and self absorbed gentlemen of the ton. Her mother despairs of Sophia as she has a caustic tongue when needed, which was fairly frequently and she hadn’t found a gentleman who appreciated her tart tongue. She also feels plain and has few friends because she enjoys activities that are educational and interesting. She also enjoys reading romantic novels more than anything. She finds that she has nothing in common with other young ladies and their hobbies of needlepoint or gossip.
She dislikes going to social gatherings and watching Mara get all the attention and her relishing the compliments that she gets from the gentleman. Until at one ball, the most handsome man pays Sophia some attention, flirting with her and taking her into the garden where they are seen by many guests. Sophia feels like it must be a dream, until he kisses her and she is disappointed in the lack of passion she thought she should have felt. She is ruined by the interaction and her father will ensure that the man responsible will marry her.

Alexander Viceroy, the Duke of Roxboro lives a life of overindulgence and luxury. His sense of entitlement and self importance has meant he indulges in whatever he wants and has never faced any consequences. He often doesn’t remember everything he does on his nights out through drinking too much. His uncle Damon and his wife raised Alexander and Damon wanted Alexander to enjoy his youth without the responsibility of his duties as a duke. Damon took on the responsibilities of Alexander’s dukedom as well as his own political career. Both were shocked to find Lady Sophia and her very politically influential father Lord Canterbell at Alexander’s door demanding he marry Sophia after ruining her at the ball.
Alexander absolutely insists point blank that he was never there and Sophia would never be a young lady he would consider to ruin but there were many witnesses, including Lord Canterbell who saw them together. Sophia is appalled at Alexander’s reaction as he promised her last night that he was going to speak to her father about courting her. The couple hurl insults at each other, neither wanting to be near the other but marry each other they must. They have a month before the wedding to become civil with each other or at least find common ground to be a foundation of their marriage.

I loved the interactions between Lady Sophia Simmons and Alexander Viceroy, the Duke of Roxboro. They have a very heated relationship where neither can stand each other and can only insult each other when they have anything to say to each other. I loved the imaginative names Alexander found to call Sophia by. She is such a spitfire that isn’t afraid to speak her mind and then some. She doesn’t stand on ceremony and refuses kowtow to him, which is something Alexander has never experienced before. They both find each other extremely annoying and neither want to be tied to the other for life.

At their wedding Sophia shockingly realises that she may have been wrong about Alexander after all and could have potentially stopped the wedding but she stayed silent.

A life changing turn of events days later finds them both slowly realising that you don’t always get what you want, but you get what you need. As they are made to spend time together they realise that they are more compatible than they ever imagined. But there is a mystery that needs to be addressed that wasn’t solved in this book, leaving a cliffhanger after the epilogue which I love to read. It usually finishes the story but not in this case. I am so looking forward to the next book to hopefully discover more about the mysterious man that caused so much chaos in this book.

This was such a great read. The characters were well written and the plot was paced perfectly. The storyline kept me interested and engaged throughout. I found the exchanges between Sophia and Alexander very amusing.
I hope the next book in this series is not too far away, I will definitely reread this one before the next one comes along.

I really enjoyed this start to the new series. It is a very well-written "enemies to lovers" and "marriage by scandal" romance, full of humor, heart, a touch of intrigue, mystery, danger, drama, and spice. The protagonists are both flawed and complex in their own ways. Sophie lives in her sister's shadow and behaves badly in order to be noticed, and Alexander is truly a reckless libertine of the worst kind, without any sense of responsibility. At first, I didn't find either of them particularly likable or mature. Sophia was too rude and opinionated for my taste, and Alexander's vices were almost too much for me, but as the story progressed, I grew fond of both of them. The hostile tension and sizzling chemistry between them were palpable, and I found their verbal sparring, their arguments, and the way they teased and insulted each other amusing. I also liked how they softened over the course of the story and increasingly viewed their biting barbs as foreplay and affectionate teasing.
However, I am a little disappointed that some questions and mysteries in the story remained unanswered (especially Alexander's brothers and Damon, whom I didn't trust throughout the book), but I assume that more will come to light in the next book.

Lady Sophia Simmons, the younger, unassuming daughter of Lord Canterbell, detests fools and is considered a shrew with a tart tongue and blunt opinions. At a ball, she is lured into the garden by a man she believes to be the notorious Duke of Roxboro and caught in a compromising situation by the biggest gossipmonger in town.
Alexander Viceroy, Duke of Roxboro, enjoys his dissolute lifestyle and is known as the "Walking Vice." However, after a night of debauchery with his friend, Alexander learns from his uncle Damon, who raised him after his parents were murdered and has encouraged his rakish way of life to this day, that he is alleged to have compromised the daughter of the influential Lord Canterbell, Lord Speaker and one of the Queen's most trusted confidants. Alexander is almost certain that he was never at the ball, doesn’t know the quarrelsome lady, and definitely did not seduce her. However, Alexander has no choice but to marry Lady Sophia as not to jeopardize his uncle's political ambitions.
Sophia is also unhappy that she has to marry this despicable sot and libertine who does not even remember her. But gradually she begins to doubt whether Alexander was really the man in the garden. Alexander, on the other hand, plans to go through with the wedding but have the marriage annulled as soon as possible. However, the more time they spend together, the more they discover other endearing and vulnerable sides of each other..

If you love historical romance novels with flawed characters, lots of hate-to love dynamics, banter and bickering, mystery and steam, then this book is just right for you.

I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.

Despite the Duke is the first book in a new series, London Vices.

Alexander, the Duke of Roxboro never knew his parents His father, Charles died the night he was born and his mother died while giving birth to triplets. Each were born with a different birthmark but are identical. They are separated at birth because Alexander was the largest and healthiest of the three. The woman who helps deliver them decides the other two will likely die and does not turn them over to Alexander's uncle. Because Alexander is raised as the Duke, he is given free rein to be a rake and a drunk. His reputation couldn't be worse. He has been told all his life, that his mother trapped his father and he should take care to avoid the young ladies of the ton for this reason by his uncle.

Sophia Canterbell is not the perfect debutante of the ton. She is blunt, honest, less desirable than her beautiful perfect sister. But one night at a ball, she lets her guard down and has one to many glasses of champagne. "The Duke of Roxboro" sees Sophia, takes her outside and sweet talks her into an embrace with promises of marriage. As is usual they are discovered and "the Duke" slips away but was seen by the gossips.
Sophia is thrilled…until Roxboro abandons her to the gossips.

The next day the Duke is recovering from a massive hangover from his night of debauchery, when his uncle informs of his escapades the night before. Alexander denies everything, but can't say for certain he didn't ruin Sophia, but he feels he wouldn't have done so. Sophia insists it was him, but there is something wrong that she can't put her finger on. She knows what she saw and experienced, but something is niggling at her.

The two marry but the arrangement is volatile with each calling the other derogatory names. But Alexander is determined to call her anything or name that begins with the letter 's' which infuriates Sophia all the more.

Alexander's uncle tells Sophia to go to the country to wait for her husband who will arrive separately. But he is delayed and once he arrives, is it clear someone tried to murder Alexander. This is the beginning of Sophia and Alexander appreciating the other. But they learn that someone is masquerading as the Duke. Who could it be?

Well, this is an awesome beginning to what looks like an interesting and fun series. I love the antagonistic relationship of Sophia and Alexander. It is powerful in its delivery, entertaining in its creativity, and a perfect launch for their love story. I love the twists and turns this story took. I never guessed what coming next. Speaking of which, I can't wait for the next book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Setting: Prologue 1811; main story Early Victorian (c. 1840), London
Tropes: Forced Marriage • Enemies-to-Lovers • Mistaken Identity • Long-Lost Brothers • Bluestocking / “Plain” Heroine • Reformed Rake
Steam: Open door (2–3 scenes). First full intimacy ~80%.

Kathleen Ayers is one of my comfort authors: sharp pacing, delicious angst, and villains you love to hate. Despite the Duke is her at full strength. It opens with a genuinely dark, high-stakes prologue (Devil’s Acre, danger, and a thread clearly meant to reverberate across the whole series), then pivots into a romance that balances tenderness with urgency.

THE GOOD
Sophia
Overlooked, blunt, and long treated as the lesser daughter, she wants one thing: to be chosen intentionally. She’s principled, forthright, and easy to root for.

Alexander
The notorious libertine persona hides a lonely, manipulated man. His growth is active. He doesn’t simply soften; he takes control of himself. Their sniping is laugh-out-loud delightful.

The antagonistic pressure
The villain is not cartoonish. The schemes are layered and personal. The external conflict directly drives the protagonists’ internal growth.

THE ONLY COMPLAINT (AND IT’S A COMPLIMENT)
My main gripe is that I wanted more. I could read about these characters all day, and the ending absolutely does its job as series setup. The villain is finally on the back foot. New puzzle pieces begin sliding into place, including sightings that raise big questions. I’m already reaching for Book 2.

EXECUTION NOTES
• Dialogue: Sharp, with excellent banter between the mains
• Pacing: Tight
• Steam: Explicit but not kink-heavy; intimacy advances the plot
• Tone: Tender, urgent, angsty without tipping into melodrama

Be warned: the ending is a bit cliffy.

FINAL VERDICT
Dark beginning. Tender center. Dangerous undertone.

If you like reformed rakes who actually confront themselves and heroines who demand to be seen, this delivers.

A strong series opener. I am fully committed to continuing.
