The last two years had been savage for Katie Tremain, but with both of her twin daughters in tow, she moves to the idyllic Cornish country village of Helland. The sometimes brutal Cornish weather is in full swing as they arrive, but not after a disturbing incident along the way. As they settle in for their first night of their new lives Katie is awoken during the early hours. With nothing to defend herself with she is rendered unconscious by an invisible stranger. After coming back around she discovers one of her daughters is missing. Just as daylight arrives, a stranger arrives on her doorstep. He claims he wants to help, but Katie doesn't understand his motives, and the stranger is not forthcoming with his reasons. Against her better judgement she accepts his help. The only catch, no police! Why? Together they look for the missing child, and soon encounter something so prolifically evil, that even the Devil himself couldn't keep him within the gates of Hell.
History, ancient history catches up with Kate and her two daughters Sarah and Tegan as she heads off to start a new life after her divorce. A haunted house, filled with old memories and evil spirits, the bond between twins, a mysterious stranger, Adrian Martin has written a gripping tale that will keep you riveted. I was hooked within the first few pages. I have a weakness for ghost stories but this turned to be much more than a ghost story.
For a long time into Buried Secrets, I thought I knew where it was going. But the author throws in some intriguing twists that make you want to race through to find out more. Kate’s character and her love for her kids as well as the link between her children have been written very well. I had various theories on how the mysterious stranger was linked to Kate, but I was entirely wrong and the final revelation blew my mind.
Read the book in the evening, and I guarantee that you will be sleeping with the lights on! An imaginative and exciting story, Adrian!
I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Crooked Cat Publishing! The book I read is named "The Helland Reckoning," but it seems to be the same one listed on Goodreads as "Buried Secrets." Whatever the name, it is an extremely creepy story where the stakes are as high as possible. Katie Tremain is trying to rebuild her life after a bitter divorce. When one of her twin daughters goes missing, she accepts the help of a stranger. And it is this chase to try to save her child that kept me turning the pages. Somehow, the chapters devoted to the police investigation seemed a little out of place, but the main plot more than made up for it. I don't want to give too much away but some parts gave me gooseflesh, despite being a somewhat traditional horror story. If you like to be scared, you must add this to your TBR list now. If you're afraid of the dark... maybe not.
I adored this book by Adrian Martin and so did my husband! I found the book hard to put down, I was hooked from the first page! I felt frightened at times, I was so involved in the story! Well done Adrian Martin, I'm eagerly awaiting your next masterpiece!
