It all begins with a kiss…

After tragedy brings her home to Louisiana, all Shayla Kirkland wants is to reconnect with her family. The sleepy town is the perfect transition place for Xavier to heal others while trying to mend his own heart. Falling for the owner of Gauthier's hottest new hangout isn't part of his short-term goals—even if the passion Shayla's arousing in him is impossible to resist. Oh my gawd, My shaylaaaa😭😭😂

So we have Shayla, who comes back home carrying grief, responsibility, and that very specific kind of exhaustion that comes from trying to be “the strong one” when life clearly did not consult you first. And then there’s Xavier… a man who said “healing journey” but chose relocation instead 😭

Their first interaction? Jail. Immediate jail.
This man really looked at a stressed woman bringing in a sick child and thought, yes, manipulation. Sir, be serious??? The audacity was loud, but I’ll give him this—he didn’t double down. He came back, apologized properly, and actually meant it. Growth. We love to see it.

What I appreciated most was how their relationship didn’t feel rushed or forced. It was very much “let’s hang out, let’s talk, let’s slowly unpack our trauma like it’s a group project we didn’t sign up for.” And surprisingly… it worked. Xavier wasn’t doing the most, but he was consistent, and honestly? That’s hotter than half the things fictional men usually do.

But let’s talk about the real emotional damage: the family dynamics.

Because Lesley??? Oh, she came in swinging.
That confrontation scene had me sitting there like… okay we’re not playing anymore. Grief was in the room, anger was in the room, and suddenly Shayla is catching strays for things that were never hers to carry. Bringing up Braylon’s death like that?? Yeah no, that crossed a line for me.

But also… I got it. I didn’t like it, but I understood it. That’s what made it hit harder. It felt real in that uncomfortable, “nobody is fully right here” kind of way. And I appreciated that it didn’t drag on for unnecessary drama. Apologies were made, accountability happened (on BOTH sides!), and we moved forward like emotionally mature adults… which is rare in romance, let’s be honest.

Shayla stepping into that aunt role, trying to balance love, boundaries, and not overstepping, it was messy, but in a very human way. You could tell she cared, even when she got it wrong.

Xavier, though? Lowkey became her emotional support human. Not in a saviour way, but in a “I see you, I hear you, I’m here” way. And that made their relationship feel grounded instead of just… vibes and attraction.

Now… my issue.

The narration.
I wanted to feel more. Some of those heavy scenes deserved goosebumps, tears, something. Instead I was like… oh. okay. we’re sad, I guess. The emotional moments didn’t always land the way they should have, and the male voice?? Yeah… we needed more range. Xavier deserved better.

Also, some of the small-town behaviour? A bit too comfortable for me. Adjusting people’s food orders without asking?? That’s not community, that’s control 😭

Overall though? This was soft, emotional, slightly messy in a realistic way, and actually grounded in something deeper than just romance. It wasn’t perfect, but it felt honest and that carried it.

Would I recommend? Yes.
Would I trust Xavier in an ER after that first impression? …we’re still discussing it.

Heroine changes her customer's orders to "healthier" options if she knows they have medical conditions like high blood pressure, without their consent. This is not the foodie romance for me. Disabled people's autonomy is important.

First, thank you to NetGalley, Dreamscape Media, and Farrah Rochon for the ALC of Forever’s Promise, narrated by Marissa Hampton.
Set in the small town of Gauthier, this story shows that love isn’t just found, it’s forever. Shayla returns home to Louisiana to raise her nieces and rebuild her life, never expecting to clash with Xavier Wright, a traveling ER doctor with a rough first impression and a past he’s trying to outrun.
I really enjoyed Shayla and Xavier’s dynamic. The banter was good, the chemistry was there, and I liked seeing Xavier actually have to work to earn her trust. The small-town setting added that cozy but slightly messy feel where everyone is in your business.
What stood out most was the emotional depth. The story touches on grief, healing, and starting over in a way that felt real and grounded, not just surface-level romance.
The narration, though, didn’t always hit for me. Some of the heavier moments needed more emotion, and the male voice lacked a bit of range, which took away from Xavier’s character.
Overall, this was a soft, emotional read that felt honest, even if it wasn’t perfect.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Would I recommend it? Yes… and Xavier still has a little side-eye from me after that first impression.

After the sudden loss of her brother, Shayla moves back home to support her sister-in-law and nieces. She leaves behind her corporate career and decides to open a coffee shop, giving her the chance to be present for her family in a way she wishes she had been before.

Xavier is the town’s new (and very attractive) doctor. He’s only there temporarily while working toward his long-term dream of eventually taking over his grandfather’s clinic. But his presence quickly causes a stir in town, so much so that women are practically inventing illnesses just to see him.

This is a simple, sweet romance where Shayla and Xavier initially agree to keep things casual, but their connection gradually grows into something deeper. I especially appreciated the family dynamics and the way the story touches on grief, regret, and Shayla’s feelings about not being around for her brother and nieces as much as she wished she had been.

It’s a quick and easy read with minimal conflict. I enjoyed it overall, but I do feel like it was missing a little something.

I cannot believe there was a Bayou Dreams book I’d never read!!! What a much-needed surprise.

As per usual with Farrah's work, this book is fun, romantic, and funny, especially the doctor assuming a patient was just trying to get close to him. LOLLLL. And of course, New Orleans as the backdrop is perfection.

Rochon always delivers characters I enjoy spending time with, and this one fits right in with the rest of the series. The chemistry works, the humor lands, and it’s just an easy, entertaining read that I ate whole... in one sitting.

I do want to note that the narrator seems monotone for the level of steam in the novel. I don’t get passion or heat, I get a plain, unemotional read. It’s fine. I’m just spoiled, I suppose.

Still, this was a great find, and now I need to make sure I don't miss anything else in this series.

Forever’s Promise was a sweet and heartfelt read. I enjoyed the audiobook because it was really well done and easy to follow. The Louisiana small town setting added charm, and I appreciated how the story explored themes of grief and personal growth. It was a straightforward read that was easy to sink into, though I found myself wishing for a bit more slow burn tension to really deepen the emotional payoff.

3.5⭐️

This was a quick one to listen to with great narration. A romcom with heart - I couldn't help but smile as Shayla bonded with her nieces while also getting close to the new doctor in town, Xavier. The story was simple with not a lot of drama and was an easy one to listen to.

My rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟⚜️☕️🍗🪻👨🏾‍⚕️

My thoughts: 📱9% 27:33 Chapter 2 - I knew I shouldn't have started this book. I just needed an audiobook for a quick errand in the car. Now I don't want to put this book down, but I have three books that have deadlines that I really should be reading instead, one that is due tomorrow. I knew this was going to be too good to dabble with.
📱47% 2:26:20 Chapter 5 - I had to remind myself I read Book 5 before Book 4 so that's why Leslie was still single in this book. Shayla is probably my favorite FMC in this series, but she needs to mind her business when it comes to other people's tummies.

I totally adore these characters and this is probably the best book of the series and I've already read book 5. I think these characters had a great combination of awesome attributes and realistic imperfections. I'm looking forward to Book 6, the only decision is whether or not I'm just going to read the ebook soon or wait for the audiobook to be published.

Recommend to others: Yes. This series is phenomenal. It doesn't have the authenticity and idyllic atmosphere that Catalina Cove has but it is just as good and offers something even better: comedy.

Books and Authors mentioned: Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine, The Bobbsey Twins series by Laura Lee Hope,

Memorable Quotes: “Do you feel any tenderness or pain when I press here?” Xavier Wright asked the twenty-something who’d walked into the ER with complaints of stomach pains. “Not really,” she said. “Maybe a little higher.” He gently pressed along her rib cage. “Here?” “Just a little higher,” she said, adding a seductive purr to her voice. Xavier bit back a curse, gritting his teeth as he backed away from the exam table. He didn’t have time to perform a breast exam, even though he knew that was exactly what his latest “patient” had in mind. “I don’t think this is appendicitis,” he said. “You may want to try a laxative.” Her forehead scrunched as she frowned. Yeah, mentioning laxatives was always a good way to zap the sexy out of any conversation.

He straightened back to his full height and addressed the mother. “Mom, can I speak to you out in the hallway?” A moment’s confusion flashed across her face before she shook her head and said, “I’m Kristi’s aunt, not her mom.” Even worse. Using her niece. “The hallway?” Xavier repeated, motioning to the door. “Wait here one minute,” he said once they’d exited the room. He went over to the nurses’ station and relayed orders to Patricia, then gestured for the aunt to follow him to the small alcove that housed the vending machines and a water fountain. As soon as they were out of earshot of the rest of the ER’s occupants, he turned and said, “The only reason I’m not calling child protective services is because your niece will be fine once the ipecac makes her throw up the rest of the dye she ingested, but pull something like this again and I’ll have CPS out here before you can blink.” The woman’s head reared back. “Excuse me?” “Feeding a three-year-old dye?” Her eyes grew wide. “You think I gave her the dye?” “Don’t even try it.” Xavier crossed his arms over his chest, a disdainful sneer on his lips. “The women in this town have done some outrageous things to get into my ER, but you came very close to crossing a line.” Her expression morphed from shock to rage. “Are you serious? You think I tried to poison my own niece just to meet you?” She waved her hands down the front of her body. “Do I look like I’m on the prowl for a damn man?” Xavier took a moment to study her appearance, from her hair, that looked as if she had just gotten out of bed, to the vomit-covered T-shirt and Minnie Mouse house slippers on her feet. She hadn’t bothered with fancy clothes and the full makeup routine as the other women who’d come here trying to hit on him. She looked like someone who’d grabbed a sick child and hauled ass to the ER. Her beautiful dark brown eyes became murderous as she stepped up to him. “Look, you egotistical asshole. I can’t speak for the other women in this town, but let me make one thing clear. Meeting you was the last thing on my mind when I stepped into this ER. I didn’t even know you would be in this ER. Do you really think I would endanger my own niece on the off chance that you might be working today?” Her chest rose and fell with the sharp breaths she sucked in following her fiery tirade. Rage had her nostrils flaring, those brown eyes intense and full of fury. It was a magnificent sight to behold. “I don’t know who you think you are,” she said, “but you are not all that, Dr. Wright. Not even close.” She looked him up and down, as if he were a nasty wad of gum she’d found stuck to the bottom of her shoe. “I’m sorry,” Xavier started. “I—” She put her hand up. “Save it. And do not follow me back to that exam room. I don’t want you anywhere near my niece.” Xavier tried to speak, but found himself at a loss for words as he watched her stomp back to the exam room. He also found himself slightly aroused. The realization came as such a shock that, for a moment, it left him paralyzed, unable to do anything but stare at the faux-wood exam room door that had just shut behind her. He should be appalled by his body’s reaction. Instead, Xavier briefly closed his eyes and soaked in the feeling.

I won Forever's Promise in a giveaway. I have not read the first books but would like to. This book has a very good story line. Shayla Kirkland moves back home because of guilt. She never visited when her brother was alive and asked her to visit. She was too busy. He ends up shooting himself. Shayla moves back home to help her sister-in-law raise her two girls. Shayla has a hard time working her way into their family. Shayla opens a coffee shop. Shayla meets Xavier Wright in the E.R. room when she takes her niece there, when the mom was out of town. The women in the town fake sickness to be able to go to this doctor, since he is single and handsome. He is in town for three months working at the hospital. They don't hit it off right away. Xavier likes Shayla and he's determined to go on a date with Shayla. A lot goes on before the romance blossoms. I would recommend this book.

Forever’s Promise is a beautifully written novella that delivers an emotional punch while still leaving you with a sense of hope and warmth. It strikes a delicate balance between grief and healing, exploring life after loss in a way that feels both authentic and deeply moving. The story doesn’t shy away from the heavy weight of guilt—the kind we often carry for things that were never truly within our control—but instead gently guides both the heroine and the reader toward forgiveness and self-compassion.
What makes this story shine is its heartfelt portrayal of remembering those we’ve lost while still allowing ourselves to move forward. It captures the bittersweet reality of holding onto love and memories without letting them keep us stuck. The emotional depth is paired with an uplifting message that healing doesn’t mean forgetting—it means learning how to live again.
The romance is equally compelling. The FMC’s reluctance feels real and understandable as she searches for reasons to guard her heart, but the MMC is impossible not to fall for. His quiet persistence, unwavering support, and ability to show up exactly when she needs him—often without being asked—make him incredibly endearing. He doesn’t push; he proves, over time, that he can be a steady, loving presence in her life. His devotion adds a layer of tenderness that makes the romance feel earned and deeply satisfying.
One of the most impressive aspects of Forever’s Promise is how well it avoids the common pitfalls of novellas. Where shorter stories can sometimes feel rushed or underdeveloped, this one is rich with emotion, character growth, and meaningful connection. The pacing is just right, allowing the story to breathe while still delivering a complete and fulfilling experience.
Emotional, heartfelt, and undeniably romantic, Forever’s Promise is perfect for when you’re short on time but craving a story that will truly resonate. It’s a reminder that even after loss, love can find its way back to us—and sometimes, it’s even more beautiful the second time around.

Quick Summary: A finding home romance

My Review: Forever 's Promise by Farrah Rochon is book #4 in the Bayou Dreams series. It is categorized as "Multicultural Interest | Romance." The audiobook is scheduled for release on 3/10/26.

About the Book: "After tragedy brings her home to Louisiana, all Shayla Kirkland wants is to reconnect with her family.

Until the workaholic entrepreneur meets Xavier Wright, the hunky E.R. doctor who has the local females waiting in line.

Falling for the owner of Gauthier's hottest new hangout isn't part of his short-term goals..."

In My Own Words: A traveling physician with a broken heart is assigned a job in the same small town as a prodigal daughter who is trying to make amends with the family she left behind.

My Final Say: I really liked the details that were a part of this story. There were definitely some very evident issues related to family, finding home, and personal growth. The real treasure, however, came in what was hidden from plain sight. The emotional piece was giving in a huge and meaningful way. It was not just one thing either; it was several things. The loss of a loved one in such a tragic way, the emotions and feelings of anger, guilt, and bereavement felt by those who were left behind, and the whole matter of unforgiveness - that is what gut-punched my heart. It was exactly the type of emo-richness I love to get into...and I totally did.

Other: Readers who enjoy books with a small town feel, stories that make you shed a tear, and romances that happen when you are not looking will love this novel.

I absolutely love Farrah Rochon and that explains why I a) didn’t know what this was about b) didn’t know this was part of a series or c) didn’t know this was originally published previously…..which could explain some things.

Shayla Kirkland traded her perfectly planned West Coast life for late-night homework sessions, carpools, and a coffeehouse on Main Street in her Louisiana hometown. Raising her two young nieces wasn't part of the plan, and neither was butting heads with Xavier Wright, the cocky new ER doctor who accused her of faking her niece's illness just to meet him. The man is infuriating, presumptuous, and way too attractive for her peace of mind.
Xavier took a traveling physician contract to escape memories he'd rather forget, not to become the object of small-town fascination. But when the beautiful, fierce woman who thoroughly put him in his place storms back into his life asking for help with a community wellness program, he sees his chance to make amends and maybe discover what it feels like to want something again.

At first I liked this, a lot. I loved the small town, the relationship between aunt and nieces and of course the banter/chemistry between our MC’s. But as it progressed a lot of things irked me. Our main MC was a little too controlling when it came to make her town eat healthy, and suggesting her young niece get medical treatments to remove her birthmark just felt icky too me.

Now I obviously don’t have any visible skin marks so who am I to judge or try to understand how the character was feeling but in a day of projecting positive body image this just felt wrong…..

A little less drastic, my other complaint is how fast our two MCs went from hating each other to jumping their bones. I wanted a little more push and pull from them.

Overall, it was fine. Glad I read it but wouldn’t rush to read the rest of the series

This was my first time reading Farrah Rochon and I’ll definitely be back.

Shayla and Xavier are both carrying a lot when this story starts—her returning home after her brother’s death to help raise her nieces, and him running from town to town after a failed engagement. And honestly… their first meeting?? Xavier deserved that chew out 😭

What I really loved about this story wasn’t just the romance, it was the family dynamics. The tension between Shayla and Lesley felt so real, especially that argument where everything came to the surface. It was messy, emotional, and honestly one of the strongest parts of the book for me. I understood the grief, but the blame? yeah… that hurt to read.

I also appreciated that both of them came back and took accountability. Shayla recognizing she overstepped as an aunt, and Lesley admitting she was projecting her pain—it added so much depth.

Xavier really grew on me. He went from being a little too used to attention to someone who actually shows up and supports Shayla when she’s questioning everything. That emotional support mattered more to me than anything else.

I loved how everything came together in the end, with Shayla choosing to stay and Xavier finding something stable for himself too.

My only downside was the narration—it felt a bit flat at times, and I found myself wanting more emotion in certain scenes.

Also… the café staff switching people’s orders to “healthier” options?? 😭 I get small town vibes, but let people choose their food!!

Overall, this was a really emotional, character-driven romance about grief, healing, and finding your way back to yourself and the people who matter.

Forever’s Promise is book 4 in the Bayou Dreams series by Farrah Rochon. I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. Shayla moved back to her hometown of Gauthier, Louisiana after spending years in Seattle in the corporate world. She returned to be closer to family, and opened the town’s lively cafe and coffeehouse. Xavier is an ER doctor working at a local hospital on a short-term assignment. From the moment they meet, sparks fly and Xavier is instantly smitten.

I loved all of the characters in this story. Shayla and her family are healing from the traumatic loss of her brother, and I admired her dedication to her nieces and sister-in-law. Xavier is serious and dedicated to his patients and his work. Neither are looking for love, but after they met, Xavier pursues Shayla tirelessly, showing his interest by helping her in many ways. The chemistry and the emotional connection is powerful between these two.

I love Gauthier, its people, and the peace that characters find there. This book is about love for family, giving new love a chance, and working hard while also making space for relationships. The audiobook version was excellent, and narrator Marissa Hampton did a fantastic job with all of the characters.

Thank you to Farrah Rochon, Dreamscape Media, and NetGalley for an advance listener’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The first book I read in February was book three in this series, and it was purely a coincidence that book four ended up being my first read of March. This was also a Libro.fm ALC, so I knew I wanted to experience it on audio.

At this point, Farrah Rochon is firmly on my auto-read list. I’ve been slowly working through her backlist, and every book has been a 4 or 5 star read. This one is no exception.

This story follows Shayla, who’s balancing an unexpected life raising her nieces, and Xavier, a traveling ER doctor carrying his own past. Their first interaction? Not great. But watching them move from tension to understanding to something deeper is what makes this story work so well.

What I love most about this series is the small-town feel. Gauthier isn’t just a setting, it’s a community. The kind where everyone knows your business, but also shows up when it matters.

This series gives me the same nostalgic feeling I had reading Brenda Jackson’s Catalina Cove books. If you’re a fan of her work and looking for a place to start with Farrah Rochon, I highly recommend beginning with the Bayou Dreams series.

Another book off the shelf. We keep reading with intention. 📚

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

I absolutely loved Shay and Xavier’s story. From the beginning, there’s this tension between them that feels both emotional and grounded in real life—grief, responsibility, and starting over in a place you never expected.

Xavier was hands down my favorite part of this book. I loved how steady and persistent he was with Shay, especially knowing he’d been hurt in the past. He never felt pushy—just consistent in a way that made you really believe in his feelings and his growth. That kind of quiet, dependable energy is everything.

The dual POV in the audiobook was such a standout for me—it added so much depth to both Shay and Xavier and made their emotional journeys feel more complete. I always appreciate when you can fully understand both sides of the relationship, and this delivered.

The romance itself had a really nice level of spice—present and satisfying, but not overwhelming the story. That said, I did find myself wishing for a bit more depth in their connection. There was a lot of physical attraction and mutual respect, but I wanted more of that deeper, intellectual/emotional bond between them.

One thing I really appreciated though—no third act breakup! That alone made the ending feel so much more satisfying and true to the characters.

Now I need to go read the previous books in this series.

I enjoyed this book but it was definitely a heavier read. After Shayla’s brother unexpectedly passes away, she moves from the big city to her small home town to help raise her nieces. But years away from small town living leaves her feeling like a fish out of water.

Xavier on the other hand is used to small towns as a traveling emergency room doctor. But what surprises him is his desire to stay put in this small town when running has been his pattern. When the two meet under less than pleasant circumstances, he makes it his goal to win Shayla over.

The story that follows is one of mutual longing, pining, and chemistry. Shayla not only finds love with Xavier but also while becoming a daily part of her nieces’ lives. The two also fulfill their dreams of making the town they love healthier along the way.

There are a few things that made this a three star read for me: frequent use of a racist term about indigenous culture, removing choice from people with their food, and a lack of action from the responsible adults in childhood bullying circumstances. I wish these had been handled more intentionally in this story.

Forever's Promise was a wholesome love story. If you enjoy small town, romances, second chances, happy ever afters, with perfectly placed spice .. . then this story is for you. This was my first read from Farrah Rochon and I really enjoyed her style of writing. While this is the 4th installment of the Bayou Dreams series, I didn't feel like I was missing anything. I would definitely go back and read the first 3 books.

What I liked most about this book was the character development, especially with Xavier aka Dr. Dreamy lol he went from a guarded Dr who let the local women's infatuation with him cloud his judgement to a loving family man! The way Shayla humbled that man was everything!

I also loved how both main characters learned how to manage grief. Different pasts but they both didn't give up! This story also sheds light on some heavy topics including ptsd, so take care of yourself while reading.

The narration was done beautifully as well. Each character had a different voice including the children and it made it easy for me to follow.

*I received an ALC for my honest review of this book.

Forever’s Promise was a heartfelt and emotional read that really leans into themes of grief, healing, and the quiet ways love can find you when you least expect it.

One of the standout elements for me was the family dynamics. They felt authentic and layered, showing both the comfort and complexity that comes with navigating loss together. The story does a beautiful job exploring life after grief—not just the sadness, but the small steps forward, the messy in-between moments, and the hope that slowly begins to take shape again.

The romance was another highlight. It wasn’t rushed or overly dramatic, but instead soft, sweet, and naturally developed. It added a sense of warmth to the story without taking away from the heavier emotional themes, which I really appreciated.

That said, while I did enjoy the read, there were moments where the pacing felt a bit slow for me, and I found myself wanting a little more depth or emotional intensity in certain scenes. Even so, the overall message and character relationships made it a worthwhile read.

If you enjoy stories that focus on healing, family bonds, and tender romance, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Thank you libro.fm for the gifted audiobook!

Picture this, you’re in the mood for a romance, but you don’t know what to listen to next. I found myself scrolling my libro and found Forever’s Promise on there and immediately clicked download. I love Farrah’s contemporary romances, and while I’ve seen the Bayou Dreams series floating around, I hadn’t read one of them yet. This book was original published in 2014, and STILL holds up to this day.

Also, I know this is book four in the series, and my first one, but I thought it was perfectly fine to read as a standalone :)

I loved Shayla and Xavier’s meet cute. Although if I had met Xavier and he made the assumptions about me that he made about Shayla, we would NEVER be friends lol. My favorite thing about Shayla was how unbothered ans sassy she was right back to him. I love how he quickly turned himself around and then basically drooled over her for the rest of the book (in a respectful way lol). I loved Shayla’s nieces in this story, and how it all came together in the end.

I can’t wait to read the other books in this series!

Forever's Promise is a 3.5 star read for me!

I loved the premise of this book. Shayla moving home to care for her brother's family after his sudden death. She is a workaholic, but her nieces have her opening herself up to new adventures and finding a good balance between the coffee shop and connection with family and friends. Xavier is a traveling physician after his broken engagement and never wants to get attached. I really didn't like Xavier's reaction to their meet cute. Even though it is understandable, it didn't hit well for me, However, he did redeem himself throughout this short story. Xavier and Shayla start to open up to each other, even though it takes Xavier much longer to reveal his past. They both have reasons to be cautious, but the community and family connections were very sweet.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review. This short story is full of emotions, connections, and trauma to round out a great read.

This was a cute romance.

Shayla returns back to her hometown after the unexpected death of her brother. She is now tasked to learn and help with her neices and sister in law, the drama. There is also the new travel ER doctor Xavier, possibly the one but also he's running from an old relationship himself.

Shayla is trying to embrace reconnecting with her family and then also a possible love interest. She goes through motions of gaining trust amongst her neices and sister in law, while also questioning can she have romance with Xavier at the same time.

Xavier becomes a travel ER nurse while waiting on his grandfather to retire and also due to a failed relationship. His latest assignement finds him in Gaither and an unexpected romance with Shayla. His delimma is staying put and also letting go his past relationship to find new love.

Overall, the story is nice, clean and a bit of spice. The story itself was easy to follow.

Since I had the copy of the ALC, the narrator was not bad but the lack of emotion on some parts and her male voice was montone and dull.

My Rating: ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Narration: ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thoughts: I have read and enjoyed many of Farrah's books. I can tell she wrote this earlier in her career than a lot of the ones I've read recently. It's always fun to see how writers progress and change with time. This one felt very different tonally than her most recent ones, but I can definitely see the commonalities. It felt a bit more like a novella to me. A bit off in pacing at times and a bit too quick in others. I would have liked more time on the romance building, but I like Farrah and her books celebrating Black love and lives.

I received a review listening copy and review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thanks to the author and LibroFm for the opportunity to read this.

This was my first Farrah Rochon book and I loved it.
I loved the setting - a Black small southern town, with all the things you expect from a small town. Community & lots of gossip!

The main characters - our FMC, Shayla and our MMC, Xavier are both strong, successful people searching for roots after a period of just existing.

Shayla has just moved back home from Seattle after 15 years away and Xavier is a travelling Dr on the run after having his heart broken by his fiancé.

They didn’t have a great meet cute and Xavier is determined to have a do over.

I loved their journey towards being emotionally vulnerable to each other and them realising their future dreams may not be as out of reach as they might have thought.

Overall Rating: 4 ⭐️
Narration : 4 - it was a bit quick for my taste and the NetGalley app didn’t have a 0.9x option for me to slow it down just a bit.
Spice 🌶️ : Open door

Tropes:

This was a cute romance! I really liked how dedicated the FMC was to her neices and how being in a short term relationship would affect them. For me I couldn't have gotten over the ick I would have gotten at their meet cute, it would be hard to come back from that; but I believed the character did and could root for them. There were some heavy handed things the FMC did in the cafe as well that hit me a bit wrong (changing their orders to something "healthier" if she knows they have a medical condition, but it made me side eye how she knows, and if she also goes by looks), but if you unplug your brain you can have a good time. You don't have to read the other books in the series to understand this one.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for a copy to form opinions from.

Forever's Promise was endlessly sweet and heartwarming. Following the death of her brother, Shayla moves back home to be closer to her nieces and sister-in-law. She has a rough first encounter with the attractive new E.R. doctor, Xavier, and he has to grovel his way back into her good graces. I loved the characters in this. Shayla and Xavier both made me fall in love with each of them - they're smart and cute and I'd love to do Zumba with them at the Jazzy Bean! While there are heavier topics woven into the storyline, I think they're handled with empathy and grace. This is a beautiful story of finding your true priorities, falling in love with your family, your life, and with a very special someone. I LOVED the narration - Marrissa Hampton did an incredible job with the characters and story narration.

I basically listened to this audiobook in one sitting! It was a touching and emotional read. The grief that brought a family back together and the love that allowed them to set down roots.

I enjoyed the sub plot of helping the small town get healthy and how community really heals all.

The male persistence trope always feels a bit icky for me, even though we could see that the FMC liked it and it all worked out for them, but I don’t love the message that if a man is relentless in asking you out that that’s a cute personality quirk. Men need to know that no is a complete sentence.

The narrator (Marissa Hampton) did a great job and it was easy to listen to her voice.

TW: Suicide (happens off page but dealing with the complex grief)
