After a victorious return from Seattle, Nora Wexler discovers that she's caught up in a catastrophic data breach at the FBI, leaving her without a job or a way to clear her name. While her new flame Travis Greer takes up the cause to set things right, Nora seizes the opportunity to visit some old college friends at Berkeley, CA.
A bitter memory from college quickly comes to the surface, the unsolved murder of their friend Maria after a night out on the town. No witnesses, no motive, just a faint memory of a handsome young man she left the bar with. Nora decides to use her free time to try to solve her lost friend's case, but free time becomes scarce when Nora's friend's sister Lauren, a freshmen at Berkeley, experiences a terrible tragedy at a fraternity house.
Deadly Pasts is the second of Nora Wexler's mysteries and contains 75,000 words.
Sometimes I think writing makes me crazy, but then again I'd probably be even more crazy without it. There are a lot of things I do to balance out though: traveling, distance running, hiking, reading, orange juice, tennis, food fights, walking out of movie theaters telling the people in line that Harry Potter dies, cooking ethnic food, and competitive napping.
Three mysteries need to be solved. *The main mystery that is a cold case I didn’t care about. (The bad guys were clowns) *The rape case conclusion was sooooo unsatisfying. (The survivor was wonderfully strong) *- I’m kind of done with the series. I honestly don’t know if I will continue reading because it really pissed me off. I was just annoyed with this entire book.
The writing for this book was an improvement from book one. The storyline had a few big jumps and three of the villains were predictable, but it was still entertaining and I enjoyed the character development of Nora.
Some of the character introductions were weird, hello ex girlfriend, but others were quite helpful to the storyline and world development ...hello Chip and Caroline!
The play on technology is a good connecting piece for the series and interesting as it shows the multiple ways technology impacts society. The betrayal and corruption part was intriguing and different from book one. This is book two and in this series I would recommend reading the booms in order to fully appreciate the characters and their dynamics.
