Continue Alexis and Keane's story in Woodlands, The Kingdom of Disce: Book II
A COURT THAT HOLDS SECRETS
Everything Alexis thought she knew of Disce's Woodlands Court is now being put to the test. Rumors of mistreatment and disparity against the humans living there can no longer be ignored. After learning that her parents led a rebellion against the Discerni in her home village of Etter, Alexis is determined to confront those rumors and see the truth for herself.
Navigating the politics of Woodlands should be easy, especially when the man she loves, the future King of Disce, is an avid supporter of humankind. But their travel across borders only leads to new secrets and plots, conspiracies that not only involve the future of Disce but the whole of the Old World.
AN OLD WORLD ON THE BRINK OF CHANGE
The Ancients are awakening. Hirovale is plotting. And Alexis is still the Human Reborn...
The first of her kind to wield magic since the Great Rift, Alexis finds herself battling with what it means to be both human and mystical. Her desire to protect humanity remains her biggest priority, but as Hirovale's prophecy spreads throughout the Four Kingdoms, she soon learns that not everyone shares that same belief. Fate is weaving a path that aims for the restoration of magic to all, and the people of the Old World now have to choose which side of destiny they want to be on.
Woodlands contains mature themes and is intended for adult readers.
Aryn Eleven Shaw is an American writer with a genuine passion for storytelling. She loves creating heartfelt characters and writing of deeper themes that are meant to spark thought and conversations.
She wrote her first full book, Human Reborn, in 2022, purely for herself. She let it collect dust in her laptop for three years before deciding to (timidly) step into the indie author realm and share it with the world.
ARC! This epic tale picks up exactly where the first book left off, and I was keen to return to this world.
Alexis is as determined as ever to protect humankind while coming to terms with being Human Reborn and learning to master her incredible new magical abilities.
The world-building continues to be absolutely breathtaking. Aryn has a real talent for transporting readers into the beautiful, magical kingdom of Disce, making every page feel vivid and immersive.
The relationship between Alexis and Keane continues to deepen, and if you enjoy a slow-burn romance with plenty of spice, this one definitely delivers.
As we journey across Disce, there are twists, surprises, and unexpected moments that kept me turning the pages. I won’t say too much because I don’t want to spoil the experience for anyone else!
An excellent sequel to Human ReBorn—an immersive, emotional rollercoaster packed with magic, romance, and adventure that completely swept me away.
And can we talk about that ending?! 🤯 Aryn where on earth are you taking us next? 🫣
I was given this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Woodlands, and the entire Kingdom of Disce universe has seriously been so amazing to get to know!
Alexis is one of my new favorite FMC’s. I love how smart, resourceful, loyal, and strong she is. I find myself resonating with her a lot. She is a total baddie, and I can’t wait to read more about her.
If you love high level romantasy like I do (think The Lady of Darkness Series) this series is a MUST read! Human Reborn and the Woodlands are two of my top books of 2026, for sure.
Obviously, everyone should go check this book out today! Woodlands is now available on Kindle Unlimited, ebook, and paperback!
I am deeply saddened to give Woodlands a 1 star review. I read Human Reborn and adored it and had been looking forward to Book 2... my excitement faded by the time I got to chapter three.
I mean this in the most polite way possible, but Woodlands is one of the most poorly written books I've read. I wondered, countless times, if it had ever actually been edited; to my dismay I found that it had been, but I'm questioning the background of the editor who provided Shaw with their services.
SOME SPOILERS AHEAD! The same phrase was repeated several times, not just within chapters but within paragraphs and pages. "The full of..." was used so many times it became a huge annoyance for me as I trudged through this book. Example: "...The moment we opened the door at the top, the full of the staircase...steps. The full of the twisting stairs..." And the paragraph right after this one: "The full of the tower remained..."
Additional to the overuse of the phrase, "the full of," there were a few instances Shaw used a phrase or word without looking up whether it was being used in the correct context. Example: "...in a design that reminds me of the waves of the River Poise." "The hill does pull from the River Poise along..." What is the River Poise? I'm unsure if this is a geographical feature (a river) or if it's being used metaphorically to describe something. But if it's in metaphorical, it isn't being used accurately. "The" is unnecessary and "River Poise" wouldn't be capitalized if that's the case. If it's a geographical feature, it's not mentioned outside of being used as a descriptor for something else entirely, and without context it doesn't really make sense. Example: "Plains of the Afterlife" This is a place where a being who has passed is greeted by an Ancient to be escorted to their next exploration of life. I.e. a different realm, dimension, or level of existence. Planes of the Afterlife would be accurate in this context, not Plains of the Afterlife. More context: "...something he constructed... act as different steppes in which a soul is confined to." From my understanding, there would be three planes of the afterlife. "...sharp plains of his face..." and "...angular plains of his Discerni features." When describing someone's facial features, planes would also be the correct word to use here, not plains.
There are a few other cases of this, however I waited too long to gather my thoughts to write a review that I cannot recall them off the top of my head. The overuse of "the full of" and the misuse of "plains" versus "planes" were what stood out to me most. When I search for the phrase, "the full of" within this book, 136 results show up. And many of these instances were used within the same page. That is jarring. If I was an author and was rereading my manuscript and caught the phrase "the full of" three times within two paragraphs, I'd be rewording two of those instances, if not all three depending on when the last time the phrase was used.
OBVIOUS SPOILERS AHEAD Moving on... There were a few scenes that felt as if they cut off abruptly, making their importance of the scene dissipate nearly immediately. Example: In Chapter 6, Alexis and Queen Renate are speaking privately about the situation and the Queen's hesitancy towards Alexis and, furthermore, Alexis being with her son, Keane. It was made obvious that the Queen wasn't particularly... fond of them or the situation. Keane and Hirovale step in to further explain things to the Queen, and then the chapter ends and we move onto the next scene. We have no indication on how the conversation altered the Queen's feelings towards Alexis, Alexis and Keane, and the situation... if it did at all. If we didn't see the Queen's feelings after this, what was the point of the scene? Example: The final scene of Book 2... It missed the mark completely to be a true cliffhanger. Instead, it cut off with an antagonist throwing slurs at Alexis and announcing his intentions, vaguely, and then it ends. There is no impactful paragraph to follow about Alexis's emotions, thoughts, or anything. And why didn't Alexis just use her summoning to call for Keane like she usually does? No idea... I'd also like to add the choice of slurs used by this antagonist towards Alexis don't feel like anything but baseless insults.
The Woodlands Court also missed the mark for me to be honest, a lot of the scenes involving the Woodlands Discerni felt rushed and repetitive. And even more so the conflict with Desmond's and Keane's brother, Troy. Is Troy an antagonist or not? One moment he is and the next moment he's not, and then sort of is but also sort of not. And no, this was not done in a way to build any sort of distrust with his character, it's just confusing.
Alexis killing a Discerni in a public execution using a blade of green agate was a poor decision, and Keane revoking the law of humans wielding green agate felt like an afterthought to fix the situation. But Keane, being a King, should have known to revoke the law first then allow Alexis the privilege of participating in a public execution.
The world-building felt lackluster to me, a lot of the conflicts and descriptions were things we'd already read about through Book 1 and all of Book 2. I also still have no idea what a Human Reborn actually is, or why there are different Courts within the kingdom with different names that are irrelevant to the courts' residents. Keane's powers still don't have explanation (why he can wield different elements, what makes him more powerful than anyone else). Relationships felt surface level attempting to be deeper, especially between Alexis and Clair. No resolution came from Alanna's situation (or at least, none that I can recall). The tower scene didn't serve a purpose other than to continue the alcoholic themes of the book, where people just drown themselves with whiskey, ale, and toddies...
SPOILERS ENDED
There are a plethora of reasons why this book is a 1 Star for me, but it really just comes down to poor writing and editing.
I am hesitant about whether I wish to continue the series or not. I apologize, sincerely, for being harsh. I see a lot of potential with Human Reborn, and the potential could be there with Woodlands. Book 3 will need to ensure it is edited properly before being released. I will more than likely give Book 3 a chance, but if it's the same quality as Woodlands, I will probably not continue the series after Book 3 (if Book 3 isn't the end).
I remember being blown away by Aryn Eleven Shaw's writing when I first read Human Reborn (Book 1) a few months back. The epic fantasy was so well-written for a debut author that one couldn't help but wonder if her follow-up would be able to land the same nearly perfect score. My expectations were high, and I was eager (yet nervous) to see if Book 2 would hold up.
After finishing my beta work on Woodlands, I can confidently say, it was not a fluke!
Woodlands begins as a seamless transition from Human Reborn, throwing you back into the world that Aryn meticulously built. I say "meticulous" because no little detail is ever spared in her books. You can easily imagine everything you read without needing to hear or see it. As this book introduces darker themes found in the Woodlands, you'll find that some of these details are even symbolic.
Our main girl, Alexis, goes through a lot in the first book, and continues to be put through the emotional ringer in the second. Sure, she now has an established (albeit still newish) relationship with royal Discerni (fae) Keane, but now she gets to listen to outside opposing voices pointing out the obvious discrepancy--he's magical while she's Human af. Couple that with being the chosen Human Reborn to the most powerful Ancient, Hirovale, on a quest she didn't even sign herself up for, AND taking a journey to the metaphorical past to learn more of her origins, this girl is BUSY.
We still get our original cast of characters, but with the addition of newly awakened Ancients that will pique your interest. Aryn makes it hard to choose a favorite character, especially as more and more are introduced, but all are so likable that you never feel overwhelmed. I kid, though. I have a clear favorite. His name is Desmond... who is yet to have his own book, but I digress.
This book will take you through all the emotions. It will make you smile, blush, cry, laugh, scream and even face-palm yourself. You'll be invested--your time and your heart. But that's the beauty and thrill of being lost in a fantastical world. Aryn has truly cemented herself as an "all-rounder" in my eyes. As a writer, she can deliver on everything--imagery, world-building, lore, conflict, cinematic-on-paper action scenes, spice and even humor. It's been fun to see this story play out, and I can't wait for the next books to discover the new courts and conflicts that ensue.
THEMES: - Discerni vs. Humans - Oppression & Segregation - Accepting one's fate vs. fighting for one's autonomy
WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO: - Possessive and protective characters (both male and female) - Relationship goals - Is this a why choose or not?! - Plot twists - Paranoia... you best believe you will question everything you read. - Justice (maybe) - A dabble in fantastical sexting - The third book after finishing this one... iykyk
REVIEW BREAKDOWN: Pacing - 5 out of 5 Characters - 5 out of 5 Lore/Imagery - 5 out of 5 Engagement - 4 out of 5 Monologue/Dialogue - 5 out of 5 Average - 5 out of 5 Hook - pg. 114 (13% through)
Woodlands is a fantasy-romance that expands the world of The Kingdom of Disce with magic, political intrigue, hidden conspiracies, prophecy, and plenty of questions about where Alexis truly belongs.
What I enjoyed most was seeing Alexis step further into her identity as the Human Reborn. Being the first human to wield magic since the Great Rift gives her character an interesting internal conflict, especially as she tries to balance her desire to protect humanity with the mystical side of herself that she is still learning to understand. She’s determined, courageous, and willing to question the people and systems around her rather than simply accepting what she’s told.
Her relationship with Keane also adds a strong emotional element to the story. Their connection is tested by the politics and secrets surrounding them, but their feelings for each other remain an important part of the story. I especially liked that their romance exists alongside the larger fantasy plot rather than completely overshadowing it.
The worldbuilding is another highlight. The Four Kingdoms, the Woodlands Court, the Discerni, the Ancients, and the history surrounding the Great Rift all create the feeling that there is a much larger story unfolding beyond Alexis and Keane. The political tensions and rumors surrounding the treatment of humans add another layer to the conflict, while Hirovale’s prophecy raises the stakes considerably.
There are quite a few moving pieces—court politics, rebellion, ancient magic, prophecy, conspiracies, human and mystical tensions, and the fate of the Old World—which kept me curious about where the story was heading.
I also appreciated the themes surrounding fate versus choice. Alexis is constantly faced with the question of what her destiny means and whether she has to follow the path that has been laid out for her. That gave the story more depth than simply being a fantasy romance.
Overall, Woodlands is a good choice for readers who enjoy romantasy with strong heroines, magical abilities, royal romance, political intrigue, prophecies, and a world on the brink of change. It feels like a story that is setting up something much bigger, and I’m definitely curious to see where Alexis’s journey—and the fate of the Old World—goes next.
Recommended for: fantasy romance readers who enjoy magic, court politics, prophecy, hidden secrets, and high-stakes worldbuilding.
✨️ Fae x Human ✨️ Ancient Prophecies & Gods ✨️ Possessive MMC ✨️ Strong FMC ✨️ Secrets & Deception ✨️ Found Family Spice: 🌶🌶🌶 Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book 2 in the Disce series
This book feels like coming home. The southern staircase, the Palisades, mornings in Sera's cafe, laughing with Clair. If I ever fall into a fae realm, I'd love it to be this one, I could definitely get lost in this world forever.
This book is made up of so many small but hugely significant moments that capture your imagination and have you feeling all of the emotions. Keane and the gold leaves on his coronation, Alexis getting excited with Cal about a smoke shop, the marbles, Cal taking Keane for "the chat" it goes on and on. The scenes are incredibly descriptive throughout and it makes for really immersive and addictive reading.
I'm so heavily invested in these characters they are like real people and I am loving their journey. The interaction between Alexis and Heysan is brilliant, how she calls him out playfully and encourages his nature. Then there's Desmond, I think I just melted!! We need Desmond to find his match as soon as possible please, that man deserves his own story...(must include a Daddy kink for our Master Informer... suggesting for a friend 😅 thanks very much.) I feel so protective over Golem, it really speaks to how well this series is written to create such a connection with a non-verbal side character.
I'm really enjoying how Alexis' character is developing and how she is still struggling with inner conflicts from book one while growing into who she's meant to be. Her and Keane are still one of the hottest couples around, that smirk of his is deliciously dangerous.
Beggers and Bells might be my favourite chapter ever. If one chapter could bottle the feelings this series inspires so far it's this one, I absolutely loved everything about it. Alexis and Cal's friendship is just awesome to read while Keane enjoys every moment of his woman's successes. Then the roses in the next chapter too, oh my gosh as if we weren't falling all over ourselves for Keane as it was (can a book cause real life swooning?)
I'm sorry, what?! That ending will haunt me until I can get my hands of book 3, the wait is going to be touture. Miss Aryn, you are playing with people's lives here, we need to know what happens!! 😂😂
Woodlands is Book 2 in The Kingdom of Disce series. You will need to reread book 1 or have it fresh in your mind before starting this.
Woodlands picks up from where Human Reborn left off and you are thrown right back into Keane and Alexis' world as they prepare for their journey to the Woodlands. Their goal there is to try and bring some monumental change to the treatment of the human citizens (amongst other things that I will not spoil, but everybody has a purpose for this trip).
The book allowed us to learn more about the characters we fell in love with in book 2 and we also get to watch the romance between Keane and Alexis develop.
I'm not going to put any spoilers in this, but there were a few twists that caught me off guard and I hope they get you too 😅.
Cal, Heysan and Holis stole the side character awards for me in this book. I loved every interaction with them and I'm glad that we got so many this time.
I wanted to see more of Hiro, I get why we didn't with where and how the storyline was going but he's got my heart and I also secretly want him to end up with Alexis but that's probably just a Canon event in my mind from having read too many romantasies over the last 18 months.
That ending 🫠 as much as it's a cliffhanger, it's also great as it opens the story to go in a number of ways and I'm intrigued to see if any of my thoughts and theories play out.
This is a relatively high fantasy book, so do be prepared for the in-depth world building and layers to the storyline. There will be a lot to get your head around when it comes to all the Ancients, their lore and also the politics of multiple regions.
Some things that personally took away from this being a 5 star read. (And I will stress that this is just my views and that this series is one I will continue to recommend as it deserves more recognition).
- the book is over 800 pages and although a lot of this is needed to develop the world and meet the new characters, I found that some sections and stories didn't add much value to the plot and could have been taken out during edits. - the author is very transparent that this is a 🌶️🌶️🌶️ book and it's normal for new couples to go through this particular phase. Unfortunately, I found that there were too many of these scenes and I think having less of them but keeping the emotional element tied in would have been enough. The plot is incredible and the 🌶️ scenes took away from the storyline at times. - I wanted Alexis' character to face a bit more resistance and challenges. Things seem to come a little too easily for her and everyone (apart from the villains) all love her pretty instantly or forgive her as soon as she messes up. She is a young human and it would be nice to see people around her challenging her more so that she enters this next stage with real life experience, there's only so much that she can learn through books. - This is more of a formatting thing and definitely just my preference, but if you're anything like me then you might appreciate the heads up. The chapters in this book are very long with some being over 50 pages. I had to get myself into a really clear mindset before picking this book up as I'm one of those people who really can't put a book down half way through a chapter.
I was so excited to pick up this book, especially after reading book 1, Human Reborn, and loving it so much! This book definitely didn’t disappoint. The world building is outstanding, and the pacing felt purposefully restless, reflecting Alexis’ internal state perfectly. We also continue to discover more about her transition into the Human Reborn. Despite not being eager to develop her abilities, they’re clearly there, growing stronger, and she’s still refusing to fully embrace them.
Woodlands takes us into one of the most unsettling parts of the Old World, where the Discerni are in control and humans are heavily oppressed. It’s made very clear that humans aren’t welcome, and there’s this constant tension throughout the book that I really enjoyed.
I really liked the contrast between Alexis and Keane when it comes to changing things. Alexis genuinely believes that humans and Discerni can coexist, especially after seeing the integration in the Court of Warrior. Keane wants the same thing, but he’s much more measured and strategic about how he approaches it. He doesn’t have quite the same emotional connection to the issue that Alexis does.
Alexis and Keane’s relationship continues to develop beautifully too. Keane is still completely devoted to her and makes it very clear that he has claimed Alexis, and she obviously adores him just as much! Their relationship feels built on so much trust, respect and genuine affection, and of course, there are some very steamy moments between them too. 😂
I’m also really excited about the introduction of more Accents awakening. It feels like we’re constantly discovering more about this world, and there’s still so much we don’t know. We also get to learn more about McQuoid and Clair, and I’ve really enjoyed watching Alexis and Clair’s friendship develop throughout the book.
Overall, I absolutely loved Woodlands! It builds so beautifully on everything from the first book, and I loved getting to see more of the world and these characters. Alexis continues to grow, her relationship with Keane just gets better, and there are so many things happening now that I’m desperate to see where the story goes next! I honestly cannot wait for the next book! ❤️
After loving Human Reborn, I was so excited to return to The Kingdom of Disce series, and Woodlands absolutely delivered.
Aryn Eleven Shaw has such a beautiful way of writing characters and environments that every scene feels easy to picture. The world-building continues to be one of the strongest parts of this series. It feels rich, immersive and fantastical, but never forced. Instead, the world expands naturally as the story progresses, making book two feel even deeper and more compelling.
Alexis and Keane’s relationship continues to be a true highlight. Their chemistry, emotional connection and the choices Alexis faces all kept me completely invested. I especially loved Alexis’s continued conflict around being the human reborn. She is proud to be human and determined that there is nothing wrong with that, but the possibility of magic and a longer life brings such an emotional weight when it could mean more time with Keane, and what it could mean for other humans if she goes ahead with the Ancient’s plans.
I also really appreciated how events from book one are carried through into this story. Woodlands doesn’t just move on and forget what came before. The past matters, and even moments that once felt small are brought back in meaningful ways.
The found family element remains one of my favourite parts of this series. Cal and Alexis’s side quest was such a fun and entertaining part of the book, while also giving us a lovely opportunity to see the strength of their friendship. The side characters are also incredibly well written, each feeling distinct and memorable. Even the characters you are meant to dislike have layers to them, rather than feeling like flat villains.
Woodlands is an immersive, character-driven epic fantasy with vivid world-building, emotional stakes, strong relationships and a cast I’m becoming more and more attached to. I loved being back in this world and I already can’t wait to see where the series goes next. Highly recommend for fantasy readers who love rich worlds, strong female leads, found family and slow-burn emotional depth.
An Epic Second Book .The Magic Is Magical and the Action Never Stops!
The second book picks up right where we left off on Alexis' journey, and what a continuation it is! I loved the first book, but this one surpasses it in every way. While the first book focused on setting the scene and building the world, the second is packed with action, adventure, and spice.
The battle scenes are brilliantly described, and I loved seeing the magic evolve and become even more exciting. We venture into the woodlands in this book, and it truly is an epic adventure. Along the way, secrets are revealed, true loyalties are tested, and we meet plenty of intriguing new characters.
This story is full of betrayal, intrigue, and suspense. I loved Alexis' growth as a character, and I think I've developed an obsession with Holis and Desmond! Keane and Alexis' relationship continues to play a significant role, but I appreciate that the author doesn't let the romance overshadow the bigger story. Instead, we're drawn into the kingdom's corruption, oppression, betrayal, and the flaws of its ruler. At its heart, this is a story of redemption and making amends for past mistakes.
The pacing is fantastic, with something exciting happening in every chapter. Not only do we encounter magical beings, but we're also introduced to magical creatures and the Ancients, while exploring the limitless potential of the Discernes' summoning abilities. The spice level is definitely turned up several notches compared to the first book, adding another layer to the story without taking away from the fantasy.
The ending leaves us with an incredible cliffhanger, and I absolutely loved it. The author teases so many possibilities for what's to come, especially now that certain truths have been revealed. The potential for the next book feels endless.
Captivating from beginning to end, this sequel delivers fantasy, war, magic, horror, and plenty of twists. A brilliantly executed second installment that raises the stakes in every possible way. This is fantasy at its finest.
I can't get enough of the incredible world Aryn Eleven Shaw has created. I devoured The Woodlands in record time and loved every second of it. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read and review ahead of the August 8th 26 release.
Returning to the Kingdom of Disce felt like coming home, but this time the journey takes us deep into the Woodlands, a place far darker and more complex than I expected. Here, humans are treated as slaves, forced to live in terrible conditions while the Discerni hold power. The stark contrast between the courts we've seen before and the harsh reality of life in the Woodlands adds so much depth to the story and highlights just how badly change is needed.
At the heart of it all is Keane and Alexis's mission to ensure the Woodland Court becomes a place where both Humans and Discerni can live together as equals. Their determination to challenge generations of injustice and fight for a better future made me even more invested in their journey.
This series has completely stolen my heart. It's the little details, the vivid descriptions, and the raw emotions that bring this world to life. Aryn has created a setting that feels real, with complex political tensions, prejudice, and characters who are willing to risk everything to make things better.
Alexis really comes even more into her own in this book. She's embracing who she is, speaking her mind, standing her ground, and refusing to back down no matter the cost. Watching her growth has been one of my favourite parts of the series.
And then there's Keane, Cal, Alanna, Golem, Desmond, Holis, and Mana. These characters have become my book family. They feel like home, and I love how each of them has their own story, struggles, and personality that make them unforgettable.
I am so deeply invested in this world and these characters. Human Reborn and Woodlands has easily earned a place on my list of best reads of the year. The Ancients are awakening, the Kingdom is changing, and I cannot wait to see what happens next. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Opening the pages to Woodlands felt like coming home. This epic fantasy brings the reader into the Kingdom of Disce with precise details, characters that feel like your best friends, and a plot that keeps you guessing. The cozy vibes come out in the scenes that the characters spend enjoying moments of peace, celebrating successes of each other, and always having each others’ backs. This high stakes fantasy keeps you on the edge of your seat while perfectly balancing intimate moments that make my heart swell. In other words, I enjoy every moment that I am lost in this world created by Shaw.
The world that Shaw develops blows me away every time I think about it. The atmospheric locations feel like they have become part of my very essence. Between the various kingdoms, courts, and cities we visit throughout this novel, each one is so unique and offers its own challenges. The world grows naturally as the plot unfolds, ensuring that this second book feels even more profound and captivating than the first. It is rare to find a fantasy world that feels this alive without ever feeling forced.
At the heart of the story are Alexis and Keane, whose chemistry and deep emotional bond remain a series high point. Watching Alexis navigate her identity, specifically struggling with the internal conflict of being Human Reborn versus the allure of magic and extra time with Keane, is gripping. But it is the found family dynamic that really shines. From the hilarious bond between Alexis and Cal to the unforgettable side characters like Heysan and the fiercely protective Golem, every figure feels distinct, complex, and essential.
Ultimately, Woodlands is a must read if you are interested in high stakes fantasy that offers an immersive world, emotionally resonant relationships, and the kind of tension that leaves you desperate for the next chapter.
Thank you to the author for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
The Woodlands completely pulled me back into this world, and somehow I found myself even more invested than I was in the first book. There’s something about this series that makes it incredibly easy to disappear into the story and forget everything around you.
Alexis’ growth throughout this book was one of my favorite things to experience. She’s becoming more confident in who she is while still dealing with everything that comes with discovering exactly where she belongs. I loved watching her find her strength and stand her ground.
The world-building is phenomenal. The different courts, the magic, the politics, the tension between humans and Discerni, and everything happening beneath the surface made this world feel so much bigger. I loved getting to explore more of it and seeing the consequences of the conflicts that have been building.
But honestly, the characters are what make this series for me. I’ve become so attached them, and there were so many moments where I found myself laughing, swooning, stressing, and occasionally just sitting there like… WHAT?! 😂
There are twists, emotional moments, romance, magic, danger, and plenty of surprises that kept me turning the pages. And that ENDING?! 😳 I have questions. I have theories. I have absolutely no idea how I’m supposed to patiently wait for what comes next!
Aryn has created a world that feels alive, and The Woodlands left me completely immersed in it. This was such a fun, emotional, addictive continuation, and I’m already missing these characters. I need the next book immediately.
💜 Thank you to Aryn for providing me with this ARC in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Huge thank you to Aryn Eleven Shaw and Whimsy Words PR for allowing me to be an ARC reader for Woodlands!!
I read book one, Human Reborn, as a part of an online book club, The Bound Society, and immediately fell in love with the characters (especially Golem). The only thing stopping me from making Human Reborn 5 stars was that it didn't make me cry... well Woodlands did! I was crying within the first two chapters... I was laughing out loud... I was angry... I felt all the feels.
The growth in not only the main characters, but even some of the side ones was beautiful - it was amazing to see how a random group of people that King Zander placed together for his own purposes have become a chosen family for one another. I appreciate how every character plays an important role, even if they don't get many "scenes." Everything and everyone is written with a purpose, even if you don't see it right away.
The love story between Keane and Alexis continues to deepen even further throughout this book as they tackle major issues such as segregation, racism, and bigotry together. They are working to change hundreds (if not thousands) of years of tradition that causes harm to many in the Kingdom of Disce. There were times when I thought "that seemed way too easy to accomplish," only for a major twist to happen. I was worried things would be too easy for them, but Aryn definitely made sure to throw in plot twists when they were needed the most.
I give this book 4.5/5 - I loved how it handled real world issues (injustice, racism, classism) in a fantastical setting. The plot twists and character development was on point. My only critique this time? Still some gratuitous spice. Don't get me wrong, Ms. Shaw KNOWS how to write a spicy scene (the table and mirror scenes will forever be 2 of my favorites), but there were times when I was thinking, "NOT NOW, YOU GUYS!! HOOKING UP RIGHT AFTER YOU TAKE A PRISONER IS NOT THE MOVE!" Thankfully, Des was always there to be the voice of reason...
Book 2 does end on way too steep of a cliffhanger... I'll be having stress dreams until book 3 comes out.
Human reborn and now Woodlands are the definition of epic fantasy! Aryn Shaw has one of the most eliquent styles of writing that I've ever come across. Incredible worldbuilding, character evolution and the evoking of so many emotions! I am feral for more of Alexis and Keane and their travels through Disce!
Woodlands continues Alexis' journey across the kingdom of Disce and into the Court of Woodlands, where rumours are rife of a discord between humans and Discerni. Can Alexis stay true to herself and her beliefs whilst standing by King Keanes side?
I absolutely love the way the author puts different emphasis on the use of King or Keane depending on the emotions and feelings they want reader to have in the paragraph/ story point👌 If you want a bad ass ruler who takes no shit from anyone, has his controlling possessive moments, but is also an absolute golden retriever, cinnamon guy. Then Keane is the king for you. (Well not fully as he is mine...all mine 😅) Alexis is such a strong, loyal and wonderful fmc who is learning to open up to those around her. Woodlands makes up for all that slow burn tension between Alexis and Keane from book 1 Human Reborn, the spice is spicing!
Chapter XI - Holy Moses! Ms Shaw you know what you did!! 🥵🥵 Ikea will be getting an influx of people buying mirrors 🪞 🤭
Woodlands is full of non-stop plot, action, magic secrets and spice. I would like to note- the spice although it is 🥵 it is an all consuming loving relationship spice, that can bring tears to the eyes with how beautiful it is.
Book two of The Kingdom of Disce series, WOODLANDS is finally here! 🙌🏻
We pick up exactly where we left off in book one (HUMAN REBORN) and follow along with all our favourite characters - Keane, Alexis and all of their companions.
Book two begins with Keane and Alexis preparing the coronation and settling back into court, trying to spend some time just living before their upcoming travels through the Woodlands court where they know trials and tribulations will face them...
I read this whole book on edge. From the very beginning, knowing what we know from book one, I knew that big change was coming but that change would not come easily.
I really enjoyed the fact that we finally got the see the Woodlands court and understand more about their way of life. The struggles, the mistreatment and the separation between human and discerni.
Keane and Alexis, alongside their companions and the ancients set out to make change and bring the Old World together as one, no matter the cost.
As always, I was obsessed. Aryns writing is just incredible. The world building is beautiful, the characters are described in such a way that it's easy to imagine them all and you really feel like you're INSIDE the story.
But Aryn, WHY with that ending!? Already patiently waiting for more 😫😭😂
The sequel to human reborn starts where book on finishes and like book one it’s THICK. The world building continues to be captivating and the description is still so immersive. I loved seeing another aspect of this world in woodland and how vastly different it is to the parts we’ve already seen. The plot continues on in a natural pace and doesn’t hurry through the quieter parts to get to action scenes which keeps you engrossed.
The magic system is still so unique and I enjoyed seeing more of it in this book and seeing Alexis finally accept her part in this story. Alexis has overcome so much and I love that her stubbornness still remains but it doesn’t make her unreasonable. She’s slowly beginning to accept what being the champion means for her and also how it alters others in her group. Keane shows more of his possessive side and the spice has fairly ramped up in this book which I was there for!! The found family vibes still heavily remain and the relationship development between all the characters is highly entertaining. The tower scene had me cackling.
There’s so many moving parts to this story I can’t wait to see how it continues in future books! Still not convinced about a certain woodland male, verdict is still out, and that ending has me stunned.
ARC Review! Book 2, you need to read book 1 to understand, there is another big cliffhanger. Boy does Alex have alot going on in this book. I bet the first 20-25% is all good things happening for our FMC. Then as she embarks on her journey where things start to take an expected dark turn but what happens and how things go is quite a shock! Alex and Keane really seem to solidify their bond. Hiro is not as present as I had expected. We meet some of his siblings. We have alot of side characters that we love and several that I think we hate? Whats with Troy???? Definitely a great second book with tons more to happen if we are going to resolve the outstanding issues from the previous two books. OMG what choices will they all make and she has such a close friends-family that I can't help but be super anxious something will happen to one of them!!! Really appreciate the chance to read and review this second fabulous book!
Ratings: 4⭐️ 3🌶️ Tropes: yearning, mates, found family, grey MMC, hidden identity revealed, cliffhanger Trigger warnings: very mild description SA, abusive past, torture, murdered friend Good for fans of: ACOTAR, TOG, Lady of Darkness Series Length: not sure probably 600+ pages
One of my favourite things about this series is Alexis and Keane’s relationship. It’s built on so many little moments that make them feel real. My favourite has to be Keane throwing his mug at Alexis because he “just wanted to cheers.” It made me laugh out loud and perfectly captured how easy they are together, even with the weight of the world on their shoulders.
Alexis continues to be the kind of heroine I love reading about. As she uncovers more about the treatment of humans and the truth surrounding her past, she never loses sight of her compassion. I loved that her strength comes as much from her kindness and determination to do what’s right as it does from any magic she possesses.
This book expands everything I loved about Human Reborn. The world feels bigger, the political intrigue deepens, the mysteries become even more compelling, and I was completely invested in discovering what was really going on.
If you enjoy character-driven fantasy with immersive world-building, political intrigue, ancient magic, and a romance full of genuine, heartfelt moments, I’d definitely recommend this series. I already can’t wait to see where Alexis and Keane’s journey takes them next.
Woodlands has everything you need. Adventure, steaming hot chemistry, danger, steaming hot chemistry, immersive world building, steaming hot chemistry, wonderful moments of camaraderie, steaming hot chemistry, intrigue... and did I mention steaming hot chemistry. I love the relationship between Alexis and Keane. They are one of my favorite romantasy couples. They challenge each other. They love each other. They make each other better. And they enjoy each other. Man do they enjoy each other.
Aryn Eleven Shaw does such a wonderful job of mixing the overall storyline of how Alexis is the champion needed by both gods and people with all of the small moments that make Alexis feel real... not just like a character in a book. I literally want to step into her world and watch from the corner of the room as she goes about her days. She is pure, likeable, and ferocious in her own way. And she is surrounded by men I wouldn't mind watching too.
I recommend this book to anyone who loved ACOTR or Shield of Sparrows. It is a wonderful mix of a great world, great characters, and a great story.
You have no idea how much love I have for this series! I want to shout from the roof tops how amazing these books are!
I was lucky to be chosen to read an ARC copy of both Human Reborn and now Woodlands!
Aryn has an amazing writing style that just draws you in from the first word. Her ability for world building and story telling is top notch. Her descriptions make this amazing world come to life. I want to live in the Kingdom of Disce! Preferably right next to the King 😉🥵 🪞 The way the characters are written you just feel like you’re old friends and you’ve known them forever. I love each and every one of them . They all have their own parts to play and stories to tell and Aryn does a fantastic job weaving those into the overall story!
I will say that I think I went through every emotion under the sun with this one. One moment I’m smiling then I’m cackling and the next thing I know I’m screaming NOOO at my kindle and about to cry! And now the ending ARYN WTF!!! This cliffhanger is going to hurt my brain until the 3rd book comes out!
Thank you Aryn for inviting me into your little book world I am here to stay and tilt 🍻
So the first book in this series was very much a slow burn and building the world up and the relationships, whereas this book you are thrown right back into the story and seeing the journey that they go on.
In this book the relationship has developed and you get to see how the rest of the kingdom deal with the revelation along with so much more.
The journey to Alexis’ home and the discoveries made there along with the aftermath, plus the continued journey and problems they come across along the way. There is so much happening within the story but it flows well. Overall, I enjoyed the story and looking forward to see how things move along in the next book, especially after that ending.
The only issue I had was that for such a long book there weren’t that many chapters and I did find that they were too long for me at times. There were points during each chapter where I felt it could have been broken down into shorter chapters quite easily, but this is only my personal view though as I know others prefer longer chapters so you will never please everyone with this.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review so here goes: Immersive World Building ✔️ Healthy, Supportive Relationships between MCs ✔️ Magical Companions ✔️ The BEST Found Family ✔️ Discerni (Fae) x Humans ✔️ Ancients (God like) ✔️
Following the events of Human Reborn, Alexis and the Kingdom of Disce are preparing to crown their new king, Keane, before continuing their travels throughout the kingdom. Determined to right past wrongs and finally see the Woodlands for herself, Alexis is as determined as ever.
Alexis continues to be an absolute powerhouse. She’s fiercely loyal to the Kingdom of Disce and Keane, but she’s never afraid to stand her ground and fight for those who cannot fight for themselves (I’m looking at you, Humans of Woodlands). I’ve loved watching her relationship with Keane continue to grow & mature as they navigate all this new responsibility & find their feet. She’s constantly battling with what it means to be human & whether she even wants the ability to summon.
Keane, Keane, Keane. What a man 💕! He makes for such a strong and powerful leader of Disce, and I love that he still listens to the opinions of others. His relationships with the rest of the group continue to develop, and I really enjoyed the inclusion of Canon in this book. Keane and Alexis’ relationship continues to be one of my absolute favourites. It’s built on mutual respect and understanding — something that can sometimes be lacking in fantasy. Their dynamic is so healthy and supportive & I love watching it develop.
The world-building continues to astound me. Aryn, you have the BEST imagination! I feel completely immersed in the Kingdom. We get to explore more of Disce, especially the Woodlands, which sound absolutely beautiful.
The side characters continue to be some of my favourites, too. I love Cal and how he embraces Alexis and all the changes she’s navigating, while never failing to be there to support her. I also really enjoyed learning more about Alanna and her past & I hope we get to see more of her in the next book. Golem and Stormfall continue to be such strong and endearing sidekicks. I especially love their relationships with Alexis and the quiet, silent comfort that Golem brings her. Overall, Woodlands was another fantastic addition to the series. I’m completely invested in Alexis, Keane, and this ever-expanding world & I cannot wait to see what comes next!
What… and I mean this in the most sincere way possible… THE ACTUAL F**K!!!!!!
The WORST cliffhanger ending!! I’m seriously sick to my stomach, but also thoroughly enjoying myself?????? 😅 👉🏻👈🏻
Woodlands picks right up where Human Reborn leaves off and the entire journey was a roller coaster ride of laughter, tears (real ones), injustice, and cruelty, but also humanity and hope…
I can’t even begin to describe this book without telling you every single detail. I am seriously blown away by every single page. Every chapter. Every character, and every bit of world building!
If you do nothing else for yourself this year, PICK UP THE KINGDOM OF DISCE SERIES!!! I was lucky (cursed??? Now that I have to WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE) enough to be an ARC reader of Woodlands and I’m floored and obsessed in all of the best ways.
Human Reborn (book 1) is available on KU. What are you still doing here? Go on, git. Grab it now and start your journey in the Kingdom of Disce!
Woodlands is book 2 in The Kingdom of Disce series…We pick up where we left off in book 1 and I just love how Alexis and Keane’s relationship is developing! And the spice is just yummy!
The way Aryn is able to world build is just spectacular! I felt like I was in the book and could clearly imagine all aspects she described, this is such a great read!
If you enjoy books full of suspense, emotional damage, prophecies, Gods, found family and all things magical this book is for you.
Chapters are quite lengthy so get those snacks ready!
I cannot wait for book 3! A huge thanks to Aryn and WhimsyWordsPR for providing an eARC for me to review ☺️

‘Woodlands’ is the second book in ‘The Kingdom of Disce’ series and I’m just as obsessed with it as I am with book one! The world building is really captivating and it captures my imagination. It’s beautifully written and I love that it’s a chunky book but is still incredibly engaging! This is also such an emotional rollercoaster which is my favourite thing because I love to feel emotion when I’m reading.
I love that we learn so much more about their world and we see the growth in the characters! I’m still absolutely obsessed with Alexis and Keane as a couple, their bond is gorgeous! Friendships are strengthened too and Alexis has become more of a badass if that's even possible in the first place!
The cliffhanger actually blew my mind, ending a book like that is mind blowing! I can’t wait for more!!!
If you’re looking for your next Romantasy series obsession, start this one!
Loving the world-building, adventures on horseback and the summoning system. Love our couple Prince Mcquoid and his wife and how sweet they are together, having adventures together. Also love how our main couple King Keane and Lady Alexis are adventuring together and changing the lands bit by bit.
Love how Alexis began to show more of her warrior side in this book as compared to Book 1 and it was so exciting to see how far she has come and got stronger. Love the sisterhood that she had with Alanna and Princess Claire.
Didn't see the ending coming, had my jaw open for a good minute before my mind started connecting the dots and I'm mind blown, can't wait for book 3 to be out because what's with the ending? Like I need answers!
Thank you to the author for the advance readers copy
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Wow!!! The plot is plotting!!! The love and romance between Alexis and Keane is definitely tested, but it also grows. As Alexis and Keane travel to Woodland they discover not everything is as it seems. Truths are revealed and betrayals are discovered. Who can be trusted and who must they watch their backs from? There’s sooo much spice in this book. It’s well written and blends within the story at appropriate times. I also enjoyed the character growth shown by the characters. Even the side characters have main character energy and have important Critical roles. The ending will leave you with your jaw open.
This book was absolutely amazing! The first book took me a week or so to get through, but book two? I flew through that in 2 days! Author, Aryn Eleven Shaw, doesn’t write the short, plot hole filled books that others do. Her books are about 700 pages of excellence.
This story has the perfect amount of spice mixed with plot and I am loving it! I also really appreciate the plot here. It’s not just fantasy, smut, or magical storylines here. This story has so many connections to the real world and I’ve loved watching Alexis unveil the atrocities that have occurred because things truly aren’t as they seem.
I am very *patiently* waiting for book 3 because that ending was something else.
This book was an ARC I am grateful to have read after Human Reborn! The world this author has built is marvelous, and catastrophically flawed. I don't know how many books remain in this series but I am vibrating in anticipation, because dang it, that cliffhanger got me good! This is a greatly engaging story from just the one perspective and it is great to watch as each character grows and evolves across the short period of time they share with Alexis. Someday she will stop denying herself and her true power.. I hope.. lol. Stormfall, get on top of it!
I need more of the Pyre kingdom desperately, especially Claire and Alba 🥹
