I'll admit that this is not where I thought that this manga would come.
Overall, this feels like a very JJK story, and the deeper messaging of the story is perfectly in line with everything else that has gone on in the story so far.
Do I like the Simurians? Yes, I do, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I don't think they are sort of in the wrong here. And yet, the issue is more complicated than a simple answer.
One thing is for sure, the solution is going to be intense and explosive.
I didn't think I would truly get into Modulo, but this story managed to take me into its claws almost as fast as JJK did. Gege being limited by the length of the manga actually does wonders: he shines the most when he takes the time to analyze in depth his characters and their motives, and it makes a “simple” storyline a wonderful piece of storytelling. The themes of immigration are not hidden whatsoever, and are even more impactful in the context of our current society.
It helps that the characters are all very well built. We get to know more of the aliens backstory in this one, and it only allowed me to feel even more for Cross and Maru (especially Cross. I would go to war for Cross). Yuka and Tsurugi are also very interesting characters, and it’s obvious just how much of Yuta and Maki they have in themselves—that panel of Yuka at the end speaks for itself in the parallels between her and her grandfather.
I can't wait for the fight to begin, because this manga can only shine brighter with the classic JJK action.
Series: Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Ch. 8-16 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
This volume picks right up where the previous one ended. Cross, Maru’s twin brother, tells Yuka what happened to him and his people that lead them to seek a new home. It was a pretty sad story (of course) and it really explains why the idea of finding a welcoming home is so important to Maru, and the rest of his people.
Unfortunately, we see that negotiations in this volume have stalled and a misunderstanding with cursed spirits is now leading to a potential war between these two. The whole idea that the Simurian’s view cursed spirits as sacred was fascinating but as you can imagine causes a lot of problems because they need to be extinguished. This leads to the Simurians calling for a duel with the Jujutsu Sorcerers against their leader, an undefeated warrior, Dabura.
This volume ends with Yuka Okkotsu dueling with Dabura because she has been given permission to summon the forbidden Mahoraga. I will be honest, I was so excited to see more of Mahoraga because they are such a cool creature with a terrifying and deadly ability. At the same time we see Tsurugi confronting and fighting Maru. Basically this was an action packed volume filled with a lot of tension. I can’t wait to see how this battle and series ends.
TW: death of a friend/mentor; violence; character with malignant brain tumor;
it's been a while since I've read it, and I've been feeling very strongly about this series so my emotions might be clouding my judgement and memory, but I feel like the quality started going downhill from here. Modulo is still a great story, but I think it could've benefitted from extra chapters. Part of the reason why I believe that is because the lead up to the conflict between the aliens and Earth felt a bit rushed, and the fights were hype but I think it took away from learning more about Yuka and Tsurugi as well since Rika and Mahoraga took over. I did still enjoy this part of the story so I'm rating it four stars.
7/10 Despite some really cool aura moments, Modulo sadly gets bogged down by Gege’s exposition, even more so than JJK. This whole story depends on that exposition and your understanding of the power system which I don’t have the firmest grasp on. I’ll say the art is beautiful, Yuji is super cool, the lore expansion works and Dabura vs Maho is entertaining, but you don’t ever get to a point of loving the new characters, and the story is hard to follow.
DURA 3 everything with the simurian's makes my heart UGH like little cross and maru and how much they care for each other and how much they wanted to make things right but... HUMANS HAD TO GET IN THE WAY. everything with the kalyans and cursed spirits... and then we got my girl yuka with CANCER fighting DABURA??? poor cross. maru and tsurugi and then yuka's and tsurugi's relationship??? gege is so good at writing fuck yall for hating him
Though Maru has high hopes for making a home on Earth for the Simurians, his people are divided on how to handle curses - and despite the best efforts of both sides to keep peace, when blood is shed, it falls to Dabura and Yuka to defend their societies...in a battle where neither may survive. Akutami and Iwasaki raise tensions in this foreboding entry, slick action balancing out an uneven pace.
i just made some BULLLLLLSHITTTTT!!!!!! gege stop writing try and make a female character that doesnt die or get depressed- cant even say this is misogyny cus ALL his characters are dead/depressed wtf 🥀
Whoa, this manga got crazy fast! That being said, I am seriously enjoying it. I love the science-fiction twist on the JJK world, a little out with the old and a little in with the new. The characters are dynamic and realistically flawed, Gege Akutami did an excellent job passing on distinct personality and fighting styles to descendants of former characters. The fights are out of this world (heh.)
