This fascinating, non-sectarian treatment of the unknown life of Jesus is based on records preserved in the archives of ancient monasteries of the Essenes and the Rosicrucian Order. It is a full account of the birth, youth, early manhood, and later periods of Jesus' life, containing the story of his activities in the times not mentioned in the Gospel accounts. The facts relating to the immaculate conception, the birth, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension will astound and inspire you. The book contains many mystical symbols, fully explained, original photographs, and an unusual portrait of Jesus.
Growing up as a christian, i was taught never to question the bible, never question it's authenticity, accept it and the accounts written therin as the undaunted truth of the origins of faith and the life of Jesus! As i grew older i couldn't help but question not only religion and the church, but all authority as it applied to political leaders and the policies "they" demand, and also the views of history that are fed to us through the history books we recieved in institutional schooling!
As a student of the bible, I could never understand why important accounts of J only applied to his birth, ministry, and crucifiction/resurection. What about his education, what about the "middle years" of his life, surely someone had to account for the Son of God throughout his life and not in sections! What of his family, backgrounds of the diciples, what of the many other aspects and questions that are truly unaccounted for?
As a student of mysticism i have greatfully learned much more of the life of J, and the origins of faith through the AMORC than i ever have as a christian in my past life so it seems! This book is one of many that give a more accurate account of what truly took place 2,000+ years ago and beyond leading up to the era of J.
History has always been recorded by the "Victors",if you will. That is why there have always been the silent ones, the secret ones who have worked in the shadows under the Cosmic grace to give the true accounts of history unadulterated from political tyrants and the religious elites hierarchy!
In this book you will discover who the G.W.B were/are, the Rosicrucians and there role as "secret recorders of history",you will learn of the origins of monotheism and the great Zoroaster and how the Hebrew religion sprung from this by Moses out of Egypt. You will learn that there have been many "virgin births" from a female named Mary (through translation) before Jesus, ie. Buddha & Krishna, and that a virgin birth is not a "christian doctrine. You will learn of human incarnations as a spiritual path as lessons from J to his diciples in the secret or private ministry he gave only to the select few, not to the masses!
You will learn also that Jesus was a gentile, an Essene, and that he traveled afar to study the great Avatars of the world's religions with stops in India(Hindu/Krishna), the Orient(buddhism), as well as Egypt and Tibet to the great mystery schools and of course the Hebrew religion at Mount Carmel and Jerusalem. All accounts documented and recorded in all of these lands!
You will also have an intimate knowledge of the background of the 12 diciples, 9 of which were members of the secret organization known as the Essenes, FACT! Jesus was in fact an Essene! You will also understand the political and religous climate of that current era, and will find out how the New testament was compiled and compilated almost 350 years after J transitioned, and by what councils and religious sects made those decisions and why! You will also learn the truth about the mass "book burnings", by "The Church", and what occured, why, and what was burned!
The most amazing thing about this particular book on a more accurate account of the life of J, by H. Spencer Lewis is that it was written in 1929! The Dead Sea Scrolls were found in 1935 in Egypt, Lewis gives many accounts of the true Gospels written by the Diciples years before anyone in the "mainstream" could give an account! Simply amazing! Obviously the religious tyrants didn't burn everything thanks to the Cosmic and Divine truth that simply is!
In closing, no matter what faith you are or what you believe in this is simply an astonishing read from a more accurate historical persective! If you are like me and always thought "the mainstream churches", or whatever were holding out on you, and you just could'nt buy the script, and just could not accept the fact that if you didn't succum to the christian theology(whether orthodox of fundamentalist), you would burn in hell forever, this is a book for you. Let not your heart be troubled! there is only one God, but there have been many great masters, and Jesus was one of them perhaps the greatest of all! We are all one, and we are all chosen, but many of us may be earthbound until we all learn our spiritual lessons! Just Ask yourself one thing, on what premise do I base all of my truth on, and do I really have the whole truth of the global history of mankind, from its religions, it's wars, it's history of diverse culture, and how it all intertwinds together? have you really knocked, seeken and found all that you can muster in your lifetime to base your current premise of truth on? If you say yes but have no idea to some of the things i have spoken about in this review, RETHINK yourself and your premise and revisit the great mysteries of this universe! You may find that there is more for you to know and more for you to grow, however unsettling it may be at first, in the end its all good! Peace Profound to you all!!
The level of ignorance and made up facts this book has is nothing less than stunning. It lists Jesus' parents as Arians who were forced to accept the Jewish faith in order to fit in as an example The author had to have been high on hashish to be able to conjure the stuff up. WOW.
PREFACE: Please note – I’ve attempted to report on the highlights found in the various books in this series regarding Jesus and the Rosicrucian Order/AMORC, as well as added my own opinion. As I discovered after I posted my last review on THE ROSICRUCIAN MANUAL, some of my suppositions were accurate, others weren’t and still others have yet to be validated.
Additionally, what I also found in going back and forth between THE MYSTICAL LIFE OF JESUS and another book by H. Spencer Lewis in this series which was written about 10 years later (+/- 1939), THE SACRED DOCTRINES OF JESUS, the information included in the latter book seems to be diametrically opposed to what Spencer stated about Jesus being an Essene. And then, later on ... it seems to agree. Lots of seeming flip-flopping?
Not only that, but the writing style is different. It’s possible that Lewis might have been ill or suffering from some other issue that caused what seemed to be an almost vitriolic anger in this later book. Regardless, much of what he stated in the THE MYSTICAL LIFE OF JESUS he no longer seems to support in SACRED DOCTRINES. Then again, later in the latter book, he seems to return to his previous stance (in his former work on Jesus) on Jesus’ legitimate historicity. Confused yet? Me too.
To say that this book – THE MYSTICAL LIFE OF JESUS – is explosive and extremely controversial, is a huge understatement. This was especially the case when it was first published in 1929, as attested to by a 2nd printing and an addendum in the form of an Appendix addressing many who had written Lewis to criticize the work, and it would no doubt be true today, as well...if more people were aware of its existence.
In my opinion, it’s about time (even if I AM almost 100 years late to the party!) someone had the guts to face the so-called ‘apologists’ who continue to defend the lies, misconceptions, anachronisms and other lame minutia which even this small portion of the book known as The Bible is riddled. But especially in regard to the life of the individual after whom they are allegedly named – Christ.
Even taking into consideration my previous comments – or in spite of them – from what I’ve determined so far, it still seems that the most valid information regarding Yehoshua/Yeshua/Jesus comes from the Rosicrucian Order or the Ancient Mystical Order of the Rosae Crucis. SEEMS. I’m still not 100% sure of the veracity of AMORCs statements in regard to Jesus.
More specifically, however, H. Spencer Lewis, the author of THE MYSTICAL LIFE OF CHRIST, connects Jesus with the Essenes (to whom I don’t doubt that he WAS connected) in various ways, in spite of the fact that at least one of the Biblical Archaeologists (who happens to be Jewish) whose work I’ve followed for many years, does not believe that Jesus was an Essene, though many others do. Yours truly, as well.
A question Lewis raises is quite apt: “Why has the history or story of the Essenes been withheld from general knowledge?” Indeed, why?
One reason could be just as Lewis states that “...those who knew the story desired to keep the Essenian Community shrouded in mystery to protect its work and teachings….” Therefore, if the Essenes were a legitimate religious community in addition to the Jewish community extant in the years before Jesus was believed to have been born, then this would certainly make sense. And the fact that both Philo and Josephus (“...in writing about the Essenes of 146 B.C.”) as well as other, disparate sources, seem to validate the Essenes’ historical existence as well, is telling.
However, another reason might be because the Romans – and thus the Roman Catholic Church – felt threatened by what it would mean if even the possibility that Jesus had studied with the Essenes made its way into the laity, and from there, the general population. Especially since it is believed by many that the Essenes were actually originally from Egypt and practiced many disciplines such as alchemy and astrology, as well as taught about such disciplines as reincarnation, which the Roman Catholic Church later banned.
Additionally, according to Lewis, the Essenes were “...a branch of the Great White Lodge … “ (also known as the Great White Brotherhood) which originated in Egypt during the reign of the Egyptian Pharaoh, Akhenaten, the “...founder of the first monotheistic religion…” and who is also believed by several other sources to have been Moses.
What does this have to do with the Mystical Jesus and how is it significant in other ways? Because it may not only explain who Jesus truly was, but it may well shed light on the motivations behind both the Romans and the later Roman Catholic Church as to why they concocted such a fantastic story about this man who WAS exceptional in many ways, but who was not God, nor did he, based on my research as well as that of others, do much of what the so-called Christian Bible (New Testament) claimed he had done, at least no more than so many other avatars such as Krishna and Buddha did.
In fact, it would be evident that Jesus’s reasons for teaching as and what he did were far from what the Church later taught.
Members of the original group later known as the Essenes (again, with whom Jesus allegedly studied for many years) began going by this name in Alexandria, Egypt. The name, Essene, itself, is supposed to mean, among several things, “secret.” Further, this organization was a “secret organization of physicians and healers” and others. Later, in other lands they also went by the name of THERAPEUTAE. And while research indicates that the Essenes and the Therapeutae were two different organizations, still other, more recent research claims that they were the same group.
Also, based on much of the research that has been done on the Essenes, many of their beliefs diverged significantly from what was known to have been taught by the Jewish Torah, not to mention being significantly divergent from anything the Romans/Roman Catholic Church taught or that appeared in their ‘canonized’ books of the New Testament Bible.
And finally, one of the many things I found quite interesting is that – according to Lewis and the Rosicrucian Order records on Yehoshua – he was not only NOT Hebrew (though he seems to have been Jewish), but he was from Galilee (he was not born in Nazareth, which didn’t exist at the time of his birth), which means that he was a Gentile, since according to Lewis and his sources, only Gentiles lived in the Galilee region at that time. For those of you who doubt this, think about all the paintings – especially commissioned during the Renaissance, approximately 1450 through the 1500s or so – where Jesus was portrayed with blue eyes and light and almost pale white skin. If this doesn’t click, you’ll need to do the research to understand why that is significant.
Excellent book! Highly recommended if you want to learn what seems to be the truth about who Jesus was.
While a huge fan of Rosicrucian thought, beliefs and history I have to say this book is terrible. Of course, one should expect the historicity of such a book to be dubious at best. This book makes leaps and bounds that only mindless fools would believe. Spencer delivers dubious claim after dubious claim with no way to verify any of his claims. It's an abuse of the imagination and not fit for spiritual instruction in any shape or form whatsoever. It's pure fantasy.
Although that is to say the ideas presented within aren't interesting or helpful (or even true). The problem with this book lies in how badly Spencer wants his ideas to be taken seriously and how poorly his ideas mesh with reality. It ends up not being an interesting unique or even occult look into the life of a great spiritual Master - but barely more than a conspiracy theory. And not even a good one at that.
I respect Mr. Spencer and his influence on mysticism and the occult but this book is terrible drivel. It's flat out misleading.
It was entertaining. Not enlightening. It claims to be history but is nothing more than bad fiction.
This was an interesting read but some of the criticisms this book has received are I believe justified. The author refers to supporting documents that one can only assume no longer exist because to this day I do not believe they have been made public.
A pretty wild read, chock full of incredibly diverse comparative knowledge from historical minutia and diverse faiths western and eastern.
If you ever found yourself curious about separation the obvious fictions from plausible facts relating to the myths and chronicles surrounding this familiar character, this slim volume presents many fascinating assertions, revelations, and reasonable conjectures and suppositions.
More importantly, if you enjoy the ethos and teachings, stories and missions of this eponymous mystic, but also retain questions regarding the possibilities of reincarnation and past lives (or are intrigued by this personage while personally subscribing to a religion such as Buddhism or Hinduism) this presents a wonderfully compatible, holistic framing of Judeo-Christian gospels and scriptures as being entirely aligned and in agreement with, indeed supportive of and in many ways integrally linked with ideas of being born again, avatars, divinity made flesh.
One of the more interesting spiritual things I've ever encountered, had long been hoping to locate something of this sort which provided a complete and consistent view which could bridge gaps between many lands and ways of approaching the universe, cool to see that in rational, coherent, pragmatic language and no nonsense articulating. Rosicrucianism is far out, looking forward to delving deeper into ideas...
(Also reminded of how completely deceitfully and dishonesty that insufferable prat Bill Maher twisted a lot of the facts elaborated upon rivetingly within in his despicable and misleading Religulous. Guess what can you expect from the vile monster making dead baby jokes in regards to ongoing deaths of babies being live streamed in real time. The face of one side I hope everyone of conscience strives daily to get on as opposite an end from as is humanly possible. <_<)
A taste:
"It is interesting to note, also, that among the ancient Germans centuries before the birth of Christ, these people celebrated annually, at the time of the winter solstice, a sacred period which they called their Yule-feast. On this occasion all agreements were renewed, the gods were consulted as to the future, sacrifices were made to the various gods, and the people indulged in jovial hospitality. Of this ancient ceremony the word Yule still survives as the old name for Christmas, and the ancient custom of burning the Yule log on Christmas Eve is still the usual practice. It is interesting to note also that the word Yule in French is calledNoel, which is the equivalent of the Hebrew or Chaldee word Nule. Among the ancient Scandinavians there was a yearly celebration at the winter solstice that was observed as the mother-night, and the feast was called Jul. It was in honor of Freyr, the Holy Son of the supreme god and goddess. The celebration included all sorts of demonstrations of joy and happiness, and the bestowing of gifts. In Great Britain and Ireland the Druids celebrated December 25 as a holy day and burned great fires and lights on the tops of hills. Even in ancient Mexico, the last week of December was celebrated as a sacred feast, in honor of the birth of a god. The use of evergreens and mistletoe at Christmas time is derived from ancient practices. Tertullian, the early church leader to whom I referred previously, writing from a distant land to his colleagues at home, described this custom of December 25 and the use of evergreens and mistletoe. Saying that it was “rank idolatry,” he described how the natives of this region decked their doors “with garlands of flowers and evergreens.”
A ROSICRUCIAN INTERPRETATION OF JESUS AND THE ‘MILITANT’ CHURCH
Harvey Spencer Lewis (1883-1939) was a noted Rosicrucian author, as well as founder in the U.S. of the AMORC order. He wrote in the Introduction of this 1929 book, “In my contact with seekers for spiritual truths… I have found that inevitably the student of mysticism, metaphysics, psychology and occultism is drawn to a more minute and advanced study of the life and teachings of the Christ, Jesus… Why there are any mysteries in the life of Jesus is revealed in chapters in this book. After many years of careful study and research… I am still unprepared to say whether the Holy Fathers who authorized the incomplete, partly erroneous, and greatly veiled life of Jesus as it appears in the Christian Bible, were justified in their actions or not. Certain it is, not all are prepared even today to comprehend … the mystical significance of most of the mysteries associated with pristine Christianity… To those who in orthodox sincerity will reject much that is presented in this book, I can say only: … If your faith … serves you well, and there is no inner urge to look beyond the veil, then do not do so… To those who believe that a more intimate knowledge of Jesus… the Master, the Avatar, and the Mystic… and to those who feel that the inner self needs MORE LIGHT on the mysteries of His mission, I present [this book] as a comprehensive survey of things long held in seclusion by a few…” (Pg. 17-19)
He continues, “The facts contained in this book are not drawn from any newly discovered manuscripts, writings, or records. In fact, it cannot be said that the facts contained herein are new to either the Holy Fathers of the early Christian church, to the most profound and analytical writers of spiritual subjects, or to the most advanced of mystics in many lands.” (Pg. 20)
He outlines, “It is possible to set forth here their definite articles of faith as recorded in ancient, secret manuscripts… Number One: God is principle. His attributes manifest only through matter to the outer man. God is not a person… Number Two: The power and glory of God’s dominion neither increases nor diminishes by man’s belief or disbelief… Number Three: The ego in man is of God, and … is consequently immortal and everlasting. Number Four: The forms of man and woman are manifestations of the truth of God, but God is not manifest in the form of man or woman as a being. Number Five: Man’s body is the temple in which the soul resides, and from the windows of which we view God’s creations and evolutions. Number Six: At the transition or separation of the soul and body, the soul enters that secret state where… [the] great power of the Holy Ghost brings comfort and solace… Those who fail, however, to exercise the blessings and gifts of God, and who the dictates of the tempter … remain in the bosom of the earth until they are freed from the binding power of materialism… Number Seven: To keep holy the one sacred day of the week… Number Eight: To keep silent in disputes, to close the eyes before evil… Number Nine: To preserve the sacred doctrines from the profane, never to speak of them to those who are not ready … to understand… Number Ten: To remain steadfast in all friendships… to be kind and forgiving, even to the enemies of the faith.” (Pg. 30-32)
He asserts, “Jesus was born of GENTILE parents through whose veins flowed Aryan blood, and in whose hearts and minds had been implanted the teachings of the Essene Brotherhood, as well as the more secret teachings of the Great White Brotherhood.” (Pg. 53) He continues, “I have been just recently in Nazareth and made exhaustive inquiries… and probably most of my readers will be surprised to learn that at the time Jesus was born, there was no city or town in the whole of Galilee known as Nazareth, and that the city in Galilee which now bears that name … came into existence because of the demand … of investigators that would answer to the name of Nazareth in Galilee… the title ‘Nazarene’ did not imply that the person … was of a city called Nazareth. The title ‘Nazarene’ was given by the Jews to … people outside of their own religion… Whenever the Jews came in contact with one in their country who had a different religion… he was called a ‘Nazarene’ for want of a better name.” (Pg. 61)
He states, “I think I have shown… that among the Orientals, and especially among those … whose religions had a well-developed mystical basis, the idea of Immaculate Conception or Divine Birth was … a well-accepted possibility.” (Pg. 87)
He contends, “According to the Rosicrucian records, we find that in the sixth year of His life, the youthful Jesus was placed in the school at Carmel and began his preparation and training as a Son of God and an Avatar… He was given every special advantage that … not only in Palestine, but in Egypt as well, could give to one that was known to be … the greatest among them.” (Pg. 153-154)
He says of John the Baptist, “Messengers were sent … to proclaim the coming of the Savior and the announcement of His mission of redemption. Among these was one John from the Essene Brotherhood in Palestine, who had been a student at the schools in Egypt… He was known to be the reincarnation of Elijah, and he was sent to Palestine, the land in which, as Elijah, he had once served as Avatar and had attended the monastery at Carmel. It was his mission … to proclaim the coming of the Christ.” (Pg. 211)
He asserts, “For many centuries after the life of Jesus the early Christian church was more of a secret mystery school than a … system of general religious worship. It was not until the conclaves of the Holy Fathers in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventy centuries, that the present/day system of churchianity, separate from mystical Christianity, was adopted.” (Pg. 224-225)
He insists, “the complete story and the real facts of the crucifixion were accessible to and known by the Holy Fathers who established the early Christian church in the fourth to seventh centuries A.D…. had easier access to these records and to many others now LOST or HIDDEN, than we of the present time, despite any connections we may have with the greatest and most complete existing library of secret manuscripts… certain portions of manuscripts and official records dealing with the crucifixion and other incidents of the life of Jesus… are not CONCEALED or DESTROYED…” (Pg. 246-247)
He suggests, “The early drafts of the Apostles’ Creed clearly show that the idea meant to be conveyed was that after the crucifixion, Jesus was temporarily placed in a tomb AMONG THE DEAD, and that He quickly rose from that place and out of that environment, and returned again to His place among the living. There is absolutely no intimation in the early drafts of that creed… that Jesus was believed to have died on the cross, or in the tomb immediately after the crucifixion.” (Pg. 273)
He states, “At a time between the adoption of the cross as a symbol of man’s physical body and the formation of the Christine Church, a rose was added to the cross as a second element in the mystical symbol… By adding the rose to the cross, the esoteric meaning was that the soul-personality evolves and becomes rich in experience… through the sufferings, trials… and incidents of the physical body and physical existence… Later in the history of Christianity, Jesus Himself was called … ‘the Rose of Sharon’… and ‘The Holy Rose’… It was not until many centuries later that the Holy Fathers of the church… established the cross with the crucified body upon it as an emblem of the Christine movement.” (Pg. 293-295)
He continues, “The INNER CIRCLE of the Christine Church also formed itself into a militant organization for the preservation of its sacred symbol, the CROSS… This militant organization … was to protect its sacred emblem from being adopted by other unauthorized organizations, and especially to protect it from being MISUSED and MISREPRESENTED in matters that were not truly according to the Christ principles… For many centuries the organization remained a VERY SECRET and little-known body of several hundred men, controlling and directing the activities of a number of other allied organizations… through a convention called … in Hanover, on July 27, 1586… the ancient records of the organization were revealed, and the doctrines of the organization and of the Essene Brotherhood and the Great White Brotherhood were… adopted as the rules and regulations… The Militia became an important organization in the prevention of further wars and forms of persecution in the name of religion.” (Pg. 295-297)
He concludes, “History distinctly tells us that many books of sacred writings were rejected when the present Christian Bible was compiled. Many of these rejected books have been brought to light, and are found to be of immense interest. More are being found and translated and there is no reason to suppose that all of the facts relating to the life of Jesus have been uncovered by orthodox investigators or by others.” (Pg. 308)
This book may appeal to those seeking such ‘esoteric’ interpretations of Jesus.
If you're interested in researching more into the life of Jesus I'd say this is a good read. One thing I always keep note if and share with others is the fact that you can read something and not take everything thing as fact or truth. Take the time to investigate and search things out, meditate on and ask questions, this is the fun part of the work. So if your ready for the deep dive and exploration into the mind and studies of Jesus given by H. SPENCER LEWIS I say jump in and explore. Peace and love to all
This book reinforces what conclusions I've come to with my personal research. I'm not a scholar but I don't believe you have to be to know the truth. I can see why people who believe in the traditional faith would be upset. We've all been lied to. We're told to look outside of ourselves and not within. We can be like Jesus. God is within all of us. We don't need an intermediary to tell us this. This is probably why the church leaders are most upset. The truth is we don't need them. Thank you for the truth. It's refreshing.
A beautiful and interesting account of the full life of Jesus.
A beautiful and alternative account of the life and mystery of Jesus Christ. For a modern reader it helps us understand much of the superficial/allegorical description that is thought us in the western world about Christian philosophy. It makes the drama of Jesus and his life become more comprehensible and at the same time adds important information about the life of Christ between the age of 12 and 30.
This is a good book on the missing years of Jesus Christ and his mystical teachings. Anyone hoping to learn of those missing years will find this book worth reading.
Prior to reading this book, it will be helpful to do away with any preconceived notion of Jesus Christ. I will also recommend reading The Aquarian gospel of Jesus Christ by Levi Dowling and compare or analyze the information derived from reading.
The fact that anyone would criticize this book, shows where in that person‘s evolution he or she is. It is a book to be analyzed and read, to ponder, because it provides a glimpse, not the entire picture but a glimpse, of the life of Jesus. It helps to put some things in perspective. If you are open minded, you will read it with that in mind, without prejudice. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This work ventures into esoteric interpretations of Jesus’ life, moving beyond traditional doctrine. I read it less as history and more as a symbolic lens—how myth, mystery, and spiritual aspiration shape human consciousness. Whether or not one accepts the claims, the book reminds us that narratives themselves act as vehicles for meaning.
I much prefer William Walker Atkinson's version of the same title. Most of these Rosicrucian stuff is but a small amount is too magical. I am appreciative however as the epistles are at no cost.
Some previous reviewers have been skeptical about the lack of citations in this book. The author claims to have examined ancient records and documents of the Essenes and Rosicrucians. In _The Lost Language of God_, Gregg Braden also mentions going to monastery libraries in Tibet and finding very similar-sound "Christian" documents. The Tibetan monks seem to corroborate the story that Essenes sent their documents to them for safekeeping millenia ago. So I am less bothered by lack of a traditional bibliography. Interesting book fills in details of Jesus' life and crucifixion that have been left out of the bible (where you hear about birth, bar mitzvah, then age 30-33...).
Fills in the missing years without rebuking any of the Christian History of Jesus. It is also another in the large number if books of God and Spirituality I have read in my search for answers. Nope, haven't found any yet.
This book has given me a different perspective on the life and times of Jesus. I appreciate the fact that it answers questions that the Bible could not. Thank you!
