The Merrow's Wrath

Rate this book
Cressida Elaine Fitzpatrick escaped the gilded cage of high society—and the abuse that came with it—by vanishing into the sea and becoming someone new. Captain Sid: pirate, survivor, and master of her own chaos. But when that chaos arrives in the form of her long‑lost first love, she’s forced to face the past she swore she buried beneath the waves.

When Tristan Gallagher, heir to a powerful barony, is abducted by pirates on his voyage home, he expects torture or ransom—certainly not the woman he’s mourned for fifteen years. Cressida was supposed to be dead, taken by a sudden illness. Instead, she’s standing before him alive, furious, and more breathtaking than ever.

Sid isn’t ready to reopen old wounds. Tristan isn’t willing to lose her again.

The sea is far more dangerous when love—and a second chance—are on the line.

This is an adult romantasy. It contains scenes of violence, mentions of past physical abuse by a family member, as well as past sexual abuse, loss of a loved one, and parental neglect and abandonment. It is also an open-door romance between very eager, consenting adults.

"The Merrow's Wrath" is a second-chance pirate romantasy, that is perfect for readers still chasing the high of "Pirates of the Caribbean". The book follows Cressida, a former socialite who chose to escape her abusive past and live a life of adventure on the high seas instead. Things get tense, however, when her crew ends up taking hostages after a recent battle, and one of the hostages is Cressida's former fiancee, Tristan.

This book was so good! I thought this book had a lot of good elements to the story that made it succeed. The romance between Cressida and Tristan was really sweet, and I was glad to see that they ended up together again after Cressida's escape from society. Their romantic tension aboard the ship was also really good, and they had a bunch of cute moments (loved the moment when Tristan starts snooping around Cressida's room and found her romance novels!). Also, the spice was *chefs kiss*.

I also loved the found family aspect of this story, which I think added a lot to the plot. The crew of the Merrow worked well together, and I thought that having a crew built on friendship and mutual trust was a great element to the story.

Overall, a really fun romance!

Thank you to the author for a review copy in exchange for a voluntary review. I am loving pirate books right now. This is a romance driven fantasy with a female pirate captain! She is a survivor from childhood abuse. She leaves and creates her own destiny. The MMC is a former childhood love who is trying to prove himself to his family. He ends up instead getting captured by pirates with his former as the captain! The book is about second chances and found family. The character development though is fantastic including the side characters. This is the beginning of a new series and I look forward to reading more from Mallory. I recommend if you love well-developed character driven fantasy with pirates and yearning with some open door spice, then this is surely one you have to read.

3.75/5 and 2/5 spice rating. This book was so refreshing, you're telling me our FMC is a bad ass pirate captain and our MMC is akin to Flynn Rider? Yes, that about sums it up. No really, this one was a lot of fun, I loved the pirate world, the FMC was tough but also really soft and I loved those two sides of her in this story. Captain Sid ran away at 17 years old, fleeing from an abusive family life but also in the process losing the love of her life, Tristan. Tristan, and everyone else in her town was told that Sid died, a fact Tristan never was able to move on from.

After a chance encounter a decade later, when Sid takes Tristan in as a prisoner. Okay so it's a book where it's captor/captive but she's the Captor - yes please! I really enjoyed the love story between Sid and Tristan it was soft and fragile because of all the years they had taken from them because of Sid's faked death and subsequent disappearance. I will say that this was much more romance heavy than I thought it was going to be and I would have enjoyed maybe seeing a bit more pirate scenes where they were doing more than just kind of the basic sea faring things. I would liked seeing more pirate adventures, fighting, pillaging, you know all those things that make pirate stories fun! There is a bit of a hidden magic in this story that was fun but I would have liked to see more information about that part like why was it part of her story, I wanted a bit more. Maybe we will get more of that and the adventure in book two. This was also very much insta love because it was a second change romance where they never really stopped loving each other so as soon as they were back together that was it. Not a lot of heavy yearning and tension. Still I had a lot of fun and will absolutely read book two.

Favorite Quotes:
"He beamed down at her. "Good Girl.""
"oh, eye. I could never. In fact, if he were her enow, I'd happily kill him again." She said the words flippantly, but Sid almost hoped zombies were real so she could chop that MF'ers head off."

Thank you so much to Mallory Wanless and the NerdFam for the early access ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

A huge thank you to Nerd Farm for the opportunity to read this arc and what can I say? I believe it’s a pirates life for me!

Mallory has become an auto buy and read author for me on this alone.

The characters in this book take you out to sea with them, allow you to see emotions that grip you in its tentacles, twists that will make you feel like your in the middle of the storm and honestly the damned tree! Captain Sid is so strong, resilient and relatable. Tristan is the golden retriever we all want the second chance with and the devotion to captain Sid is heartwarming. The side characters are unforgettable and I love the humour throughout this book to lighten the darker times. The spice was so well written and didn’t over take the plot.

I loved every page of this book and the back story, the reconnection of the characters and the journey this book takes you on!

Give me book 2 immediately as I need to know what happens next!

I received this as an ARC from the Nerd Fam

This is my first pirate romance and I really enjoyed this, the writing style took me a second to get into, it’s in third person with dual pov but it switches pov throughout the chapters but once I got use to it I thoroughly enjoyed this.

This is a second chance romance where you can feel the connection immediately, I love Sid and Tristan’s love story, I have to say this book wouldn’t have been what it was without the amazing crew of side characters I absolutely adored all of them and omg Lady Matilda being the flower girl just sent me 😂😂😂😂 I think she’s my favorite character I freaking love her.

I decided to settle with 4.25 stars, I will 100% be picking up the next book in this series!

I would like to say a massive thank you to Mallory Wanless for the ARC of The Merrow's Wrath! This is the first book that I've had the privilege of reading from this author and I was hooked from the start.

Cressida Elaine Fitzpatrick is the FMC, who after suffering years of abuse at the hands of a family member, has escaped into the sea to become someone new. Captain Sid arises from the waves and is now living life as a pirate and the captain of her own ship. Her and her crew spends their time pillaging the Duke's ships and they have no problem with it.

Until their most recent foray ends up having the man she was in love with on board. Instead of letting him go free- she can't help but take him prisoner. Tristan on the other hand cannot forget his love who's passed and has carried a symbol of that love with him all these years.

Are they able to have a second chance at a happy life? Or have the years that passed caused them to be too vastly different?

I absolutely could not get enough of this story and absolutely devoured it. It's full of twists and turns, adventures and surprises you didn't see coming. I'm absolutely stoked to see what comes next!

An epic fantasy adventure with pirates, found family, a second chance romance and even a bit of magic and a merrow!

You follow the FMC, who after years of abuse in her life growing up under her grandfather the duke, runs away and ends up becoming a pirate and 15 years later has her own ship she’s captain of her and her and her crew spend a lot of their time pillaging the Dukes ships. When one ship they capture ends up having the boy she loved before she left that life behind on it, she ends up taking him in rather than letting him go free. He hasn’t stopped loving her since he was told she died 15 years ago and has carried with him something for her on his person all this time. Can they have a second chance to be together, or are their lives to different now and too much in the way between them.

I really enjoyed the second chance the pair had to be together and even through miscommunication and their own stubbornness got in the way sometimes, thanks to a few meddling friends, they are pushed back together and forced to communicate. I enjoyed the dual POV and seeing both of them longing for each other and how they truly feel and also how they reacted when they first saw each other again. I also love a found family so Sid’s crew were some of my favorite characters with all their quirks. It will be exciting to see where this story takes itself next and what conflict will be to come! My rating 4.2/5!

Thanks to the author for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!

3.5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

This was an enjoyable fantasy romance with a unique maritime setting and some fascinating world-building.

What stood out most to me was the inclusion of water-based fae creatures and mythology. The ocean feels like more than just a backdrop in this story, it becomes part of the world itself, and those elements were easily my favourite aspect of the book. I found myself wanting to learn more about the creatures, lore, and magic woven throughout the story.

The second-chance romance between Sid and Tristan also provided plenty of emotional tension. Fifteen years of separation is a long time, and there were some touching moments as they navigated the complicated history between them.

That said, there were a few things that kept me from fully connecting with the story. Some descriptions felt repetitive, and occasionally the oddly placed swear words pulled me out of the setting. I also struggled with Cressida/Sid’s characterisation at times. One moment she felt like the fierce pirate captain the blurb promised, and the next she seemed overly concerned with whether Tristan liked her, which felt at odds with the confidence and independence she otherwise displayed.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with this story and thought the world-building was its strongest feature. Readers looking for a fantasy romance with pirates, second chances, and unique sea-inspired fae lore may find a lot to enjoy here.

The Merrow’s Wrath is a spicy pirate romantasy that balances high-seas adventure with a second chance romance at its core. The story blends swashbuckling action, found family, past trauma, and plenty of tension.

The FMC is a fierce pirate captain who captures the MMC and holds him hostage aboard her ship… but he’s the one who captures her heart. Their shared history adds depth to every interaction, and watching them navigate old wounds while facing new dangers made the romance especially compelling. The dual POV is handled really well, making the transitions between characters feel seamless.

The found family dynamic was one of my favorite parts of the book. I loved watching the crew grow together, and their sometimes ridiculous interactions brought plenty of humor to balance the heavier moments. My biggest hope going forward is that the series dives deeper into the worldbuilding, because there’s clearly so much more to explore. I’m also looking forward to seeing the characters finally get more of the revenge they’ve been working toward.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Merrow’s Wrath. It delivers an entertaining pirate fantasy with memorable characters, a steamy romance, dual POV, and enough unanswered questions to leave me excited for the next book!

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Tropes to excpect: Found Family, Second Chance Romance, Who Did this to you? and Mer Magic.

The Merrow's Wrath completely surprised me. I went in expecting a dark, action packed pirate fantasy with a little romance, but it's actually the opposite, a romance driven fantasy with pirates, found family and second chances. Sid is a pirate captain who escaped an abusive childhood and built a life for herself at sea. During a raid, she captures a prisoner who turns out to be Tristan, the childhood love she left behind. He believed she had died 15 years ago, even attending her funeral, so seeing her alive is a huge shock.

The chemistry between Sid and Tristan is so sweet. Tristan is basically a golden retriever MMC who has been pining for Sid all these years, and their banter had me smiling the whole way through. It's definitely more yearning than slow burn, with plenty of forced proximity, "who did this to you" vibes, adventure and a touch of mermaid inspired magic.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Mallory Wanless for the ARC of The Merrow's Wrath!

If you're after a character driven romantasy with pirates, second chance romance, humour, yearning and unforgettable side characters, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a go.

Thank you to The Nerd Fam and Mallory Wanless for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. And, honestly this book was such a fun read. There was action, adventure, spice and some fantastic banter. The vibes were perfect and would be want I want in a cosy fantasy adventure along the lines of The Princess Bride.

After running away from a life as an old nobleman's future wife, Cressida had been making a new name for herself and one of notoriety: Captain Sid, the (dread) pirate caption of The Merrow. Attacking the Duke's ships and robbing them of supplies and treasures, Captain Sid is shocked to find something else on board.

Tristan, eldest son of a noble family, thought his teen sweetheart had died of an illness 15 years ago... that is until she swings onto the boat he is on with a cutlass in hand. He could never forget Cressida and soon becomes a (kind of) willing captive.

A pirate adventure becomes a second chance romance as we take a deep dive into Sid and Tristan's pasts, while Sid tries to balance her new life and found family with having to deal with memories and feelings she'd long since buried.

The Merrow's Wrath draws up a world of swash-buckling pirates, mystical items and magical sea creatures, with betrayal and vengeance, with some added spice.

The Merrow's Wrath was definitely a 5-star read for me. It starts off strong with a pirate ship battle, introduces the main characters early, and keeps the momentum going throughout the entire book. I would say it is definitely on the romance side of fantasy as a book.

🏴‍☠️ Pirates
🏴‍☠️ Men who yearn
🏴‍☠️ Second chance romance
🏴‍☠️ Found family

Sid and Tristan are both compelling characters, written in a way that made it impossible not to like them. The supporting characters also stand out, with each having their own distinct personality and motivations.

I don't want to give too much away, but I can definitely say I'd be happy to have a man like Tristan. 😍

This book contains open-door spice and includes several trigger warnings, including SA, child abuse, and death. Please check the content warnings before reading.

The Merrow's Wrath is book 1 of a set, so do be warned that this is currently an incomplete series. However, the conclusion to the book is satisfying and does not leave us on an unfullfilling cliffhanger.

Thank you to the author and TheNerdFam for the chance to read this book early, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a romantic fantasy that includes pirates, sea creatures, and an intriguing magical twist. Cressida is fleeing from nobility after being abused by her grandfather. She ends up becoming captain Sid of the Merrow where she ends up running into someone from her past when taking down a rival ship. This man thought she was dead for 15 years and once he sets his sights on her he realizes how wrong that conclusion was. Sid and Tristan end up back on the pirates private island while a storm rage’s on. Tristan must get back to his family to ensure them he is safe and ok but he desperately wants to stay with Sid. Tristan ends up finding himself in a situation that is dangerous for him which Sid must save him from. Little does Tristan know Sid is hiding a secret. She is the merrow from which her ship was named after. What does he do when he finds out? Pick up this book to find out! I rated this book 4 stars I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the characters. There were moments I felt like tearing up and moments I burst out laughing from the banter. It was a fun ride and I would recommend everyone reading this!

✨Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me✨

I'm a big fan of Pirates of the Caribbean and Elizabeth's journey and strength. And Will's devotion, undying love and courage. And this book gives all of that at a nice, steady pace.

Mallory expertly makes sure to never have me doubt the history between Sid and Tristan. To feel all their emotions, turmoil, doubts, dreams and hopes. Their love. It is a beautiful journey filled with dark themes, found family, underlying threats and the life of a pirate 🦜 *f-caw-f* 🤩 iykyk 😏

The pacing is slower than I expected but it didn't take away from the story. Getting to know the crew/family, getting to experience life at sea and in sea, really was an amazing time!

I look forward to the next book and what comes next for Sid, Tristan and the Merrow's crew – and urge you to take a deep dive into the the world of Faodail with creatures, treasures, pirates and love in abundance.

Thank you so much to Mallory Wanless and the Nerdfam for this arc! My review is my own honest opinion.

Captain Sid runs a tight but fair crew aboard her ship, The Merrow. With her crew, she travels the seas, putting the fear of The Merrow into unsuspecting ships.
Tristan looks to the seas to escape his past and the love he lost. When their lives cross, what comes next is an adventure for both of them…

Where do I begin? Seriously. Between the story and the writing style, I found myself having a difficult time putting this book down. By chapter 2, I was bringing it everywhere, sneaking in pages where I could.
This is my first experience where the main story revolved around pirates. Captain Sid, our FMC, is relatable in a way that made me nod my head in agreement more times than I thought I would with a pirate Captain. Tristan, our MMC, is the sweetest, unintentionally prisoner of our dear pirates. And while I normally go the villains, you cannot help but root for him to get his happily ever after.
If you haven’t read a pirate novel before, what are you waiting for?! This is the perfect book to start with!

Who doesn’t  love a good second chance romance? When it is well deserved, of course!
The Merrow’s Wrath follows the FMC Captain Sid, formerly known as Cressida in her past life. Sid is now a badass pirate captain of the Merrow waiting for the right moment to seek her revenge on her grandfather.

Tristan, the MMC, ship is attacked by the Merrow, comes face-to-face with his lover Cressida, whom he believed to be dead. Having never expected to see her again, he knows that this time he will do whatever it takes to keep from losing her.

I could not put this book down and found myself wanting more of Cressida and Tristan’s story at the end. I love a good second chance romantasy! Cressida was such a relatable character. After years of abuse and horrific past, she escaped and did her best to build a new life for herself. One where she made the rules. I also really enjoyed the banter and family-oriented side characters.

3.75 stars for a fun easy to digest binge able fantasy. This pulled me in instantly it was captivating and fun and the best banter. The found family vibes were so great and I loved the maritime vibes perfect for summer.
Also a hateable villian.
🧜‍♀️ who did this to you
💙 “good girl”
🧜‍♀️ it was always you
💙 2nd chance
🧜‍♀️ femine rage

Female pirate, he changes his life for her not the other way around

Feedback - I wanted more on her merrow background like cool she turns into a mermaid but we don’t get much back story or anything on that
Maybe in the next book? Also seeing if the other character had her baby - loved all the side characters

Would recommend this to someone who’s new to fantasy or just wants to have a good light possibly beach read if you have read a ton of fantasy this one doesn’t have a ton of world building

Thank you nerdfamily for the arc 💙

ARC Read
Sid is a badass pirate captain, on a mission to destroy her grandfather’s fleet, after fleeing her old high society life. Tristan is the son of nobility travelling on the Nautilus for trade. Their worlds collide when the Merrow attacks and Tristan is face to face with his supposed dead love from his past.
This is a second chance romantasy with pirates, found family, mythical creatures, delicious spice and witty banter. I loved all the side characters but especially Nerina and Tatiana. I’m not usually a fan of the miscommunication trope but this made so much sense!
Sid was an incredibly relatable character for me, battling her traumatic past to build a new life for herself. It’s predictable but so satisfying with some gobsmacking twists thrown in. It’s a slower paced read but so enjoyable, it had me kicking my feet giggling several times.

A story at sea where the FMC is a badass captain of an infamous pirate ship? Say less. The blurb sounded so good and just look at this cover... stunning!

But sadly, this book wasn't for me. It's just like something was missing and I just thought the pacing was too slow for most of the part of this story. I mean, the story and pacing at the beginning of the book was so intriguing. Like there was a lot of action, suspense. I had high hopes for the rest of the story.

I really liked the found family trope in this story. It was so heartwarming to see this crew being great friends and supporting each other.

Overall, it was a nice pirate book. It was so refreshing to see a FMC being the leader, the captain and a total badass.

Be aware that there is explicit sexual content and dark themes.

Thank you to the author and to TheNerdFam for an early ARC of this book. I really enjoyed this book! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect regarding pirates but this was an interesting story. It wasn’t a traditional pirate story, or what I would consider traditional, which didn’t detract from the story in the slightest. Cressida, or Captain Sid as she is known in pirate circles, has a harrowing backstory, which shaped her actions in the present day. I’m invested in her story now, and her romance with former boyfriend Tristan, and I’ll be waiting eagerly for the sequel!

I would recommend this story to those who like string female characters, male characters who are the sunshine in Grumpy/Sunshine, and pirate stories that aren’t always set on the ship.

A huge thank you to The Nerd Fam and Mallory Wanless for the opportunity to read an ARC of The Merrow’s Wrath.

Featuring beloved tropes like second chances and found family, this was my very first pirate romance—and it did not disappoint. Salty seas, high-stakes adventure, and plenty of heart made this an unforgettable read.

The story follows Captain Sid as she navigates a journey of self-discovery, learning to trust herself while finding a family in the most unexpected places. Watching her grow into her confidence and embrace who she is was one of my favorite parts of the book.

If you’re looking for a pirate-filled adventure with found family, emotional growth, and a captivating FMC, The Merrow’s Wrath is one to add to your TBR.

This was a fun read.  I enjoyed the pirate dynamics and lore.  I also enjoyed the switch up from "traditional" roles.  The FMC, Sid, is the Pirate captian of The Merrow.  15 years after she escapes her noble but stifling and abusive background she encounters her first love, the MMC, Tristen aboard another ship.  Instead of letting him go with the other crew she abducts him and brings him back aboard her ship.  He has never forgotten her and immediately wants to rekindle their relationship.  This is a heartwarming second-chance romance with swash-buckling pirates, mystical sea creatures, betrayal and some really great subtle Princess Bride references.  Thank you to the author and The Nerd Fam for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Please tell me it's not a standalone! It cannot be one!! There's still a few questions unanswered that will make my life a living hell if it's a forever standalone! At least I hope for a novella, if not a book 2! Pretty please!

It was my first time reading from this author, and it was such a fantastic read!
I jumped straight into its ocean waving at me and it was such a pleasant trip! (wink wink, dad's joke eheh) Absolutely No Regrets!

Lots of romance, a fistful of water action, a pinch of mythical (Irish) fantasy, and some extremely hot sexual tension between very consenting, enthusiastic adults! Equals a fantastically sexy, cool, piratey book! Definitely a must-read!

Trigger warning : mention of past Rape (not done by ML), of past repeated sexual asault and abuse.
Of past physical child abuse as well as parental neglect and loss of a loved one.
Contains a few scenes of Violence (it's a pirate book).

Thank you to The Nerd Fam and to the author for the review copy.

This book was a lot of fun. Sid is a remarkable woman and her journey is a hell of a ride. I’m always excited to see dominant woman In heterosexual romances, the back and forth with her and Tristan’s dynamic is super fun.

I’m not the biggest fantasy person but, my god, do I love pirates. I enjoyed that the pirates were morally pretty mixed and that, even though we are reading the story from the pirates’ perspective and mostly empathizing with said pirates, they were not washed of their rough edges and their dark side. They’re dangerous and tough and a mixed bag of people just like anywhere else.

I wish I’d been reading this in the middle of a gloomy rainy day instead of heatwave, would’ve totally set the vibes.

Huge thank you to the author for sharing an ARC with me.

Received early earc from the author. I think that this book was good. I liked Tristan and Cressida. I also liked the romance. I did find the writing okay. The pacing felt a little off, but over all, it did not affect the way the plot and storyline moved. I did loved the pirates. I also enjoyed the quest/journey. I liked the romance between Cressida and Tristan. I loved the ending. This is my first book by the author, and I will definitely be reading more. I think that readers will loved this book if they like books by RM Gray or Victoria Aveyard’s Blade Breaker series. Overall, a great book. Readers will also loved this book if they love to read about pirates, magic, and love stories.

As a fan of LJ Andrews, I love a good pirate book and a pirate love story even more.

This story is about a long-ago love found again, revenge, swashbuckling fun, betrayals, truth, and more with a bit of Pirates of the Caribbean. The writing will pull you in immediately and you'll be like me, and not be able to put it down.

Unlike other books, the FMC is the one who is angsty and the MMC is the enamored one. A fun switch up from a lot of other romance books. If you love pirate stories, then this one is definitely for you!

The Merrow’s Wrath was a refreshing take on a pirate romance. I was already into a FMC captain and loved that the beginning scene we get is her standing in the blood of her enemies 👀

This is a second chance romance so I do feel like the love storyline was super quick. I also felt like Tristan was a little too “golden retriever” at times 🤷🏼‍♀️ maybe I’ve just read too many dark fantasy’s.

What I really loved was the sea mythology in this book. A unique twist on sirens/mermaids. I really want to see where that goes in book two and to see Captain Sid get her revenge.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

Sid is quite the strong captain who suffered the BS of men. She stayed strong and demanded the future she deserved. After finding her first love, that's when she had to face the past and learned some harsh truths. Tristan is a green flag sweetie who very rudely kept deadnaming Sid, that was infuriating.

Overall, this was an okay book. An easy read that eventually had some spice. Nothing life changing and had some fantasy elements that interlaced with the pirate theme.

What a sweet romantic fantasy!
I would say it’s 99% romance and 1% fantasy; and wrapped in a sea-faring good time!
Sid is the captain of her own ship and crew - very loved & respected - but happy to leave her past in the past.
That becomes a challenge when she’s forced to take on a prisoner, Tristan, a land lover who is certain she’s his long lost Cressida.
What follows is a story of love lost and found family.
Tristan is the most sweet of cinnamon rolls but is it enough to warm Sid?
I read this cover to cover on a rainy day. I really appreciate the opportunity to discover new authors and I can see why this is Mallory Wanless’ 8th book! She tells a very romantic story.

When former-lady-now-pirate-captain Sid "accidentally" kidnaps her first love who believes her dead, suddenly all the emotions of her rough upbringing are coming to the forefront again. She has to explore her feelings for Tristan and how to combine them with her role as a feared pirate.

I was surprised by how happy this book made me. The love story is incredibly cute. I liked the writing as well, it was easy to follow. The best part in my opinion is Sid's life story and how it impacts her everyday struggles. I felt seen. :)
