This was actually an interesting shifter book. I won’t say it wasn’t predictable, but it was good enough I didn’t skim or DNF.
(Possible spoilers ahead)

h is returning to her pack after being off at college for 6 years. Her mom is married to the stepdad Alpha and h has a stepbrother (H)
H also has a half brother, Zion. We don’t see him much. He’s the black sheep of the family.

h’s mom treats her awful. Her stepdad and stepbrother have been nice to her throughout the years. She’s been summoned back because she has her MBA and her stepdad wants her to work in the company. H is not happy about it, and h overhears him say some terrible things about her to the stepdad.

*backstory* We know from H’s POV, he’s always been kind to the awkward h, but on her 18th birthday, the 💥fated mate💥 bond hit him HARD. Since she doesn’t get her wolf, she didn’t feel it, but he did. He took off that night. The next day, he found out h’s mom shipped her off to the UK for college. He’s thinking “thank gawd! Crisis adverted…..because how embarrassing it is being fated mates with your stepsister.”

————
Now that she’s back, the bond has him going crazy. It’s like whiplash. His emotions are all over the place. We also know he hasn’t been intimate with anybody since the bond hit. He has “tried” but his wolf always rejects it.

h has been taking these pills for a long time. Her mom is always on her about taking them. 🚩🚩 who even knows why this h takes them without question???

We know she used to have a dad and a brother, but they were killed. Not long after that, her mom married the Alpha. That was when h was forced to start taking the pills.

Okay, now back to the present timeline.
The MCs will go back and forth with the smexual tension. H will spend about 80% of this book scared of his dad and pack finding out h is his mate. 😩 He literally is so worried about losing his position. He’s pathetic

There are a few minor plots intertwined throughout the main plot. There is a little work drama, investigation of hybrids being killed, h taking those suss pills, half brother Zion, another Alpha for a bit of OM drama, and H/h having smex and H wanting to keep h his dirty little secret…..and h FINALLY waking up and realizing she doesn’t want to be anybody’s secret. 😒

I did like the fact that as h started to spend more time with H, she saw a different side to him- AND it wasn’t so nice. She realized he was very prejudiced against hybrid wolves. His dad raised him that way.

It was so clear that mom was giving those pills to h to keep her wolf suppressed. Remove the pills, then h feels the fated mate bond. It would definitely make anybody feel betrayed especially since H has KNOWN for 6 years and never once thought to tell her.

Then we started to get the main plotline- the unnecessary ☠️ of all hybrids. Alpha dad was the main alpha who wanted them all wiped from the earth. As more is slowly revealed we learn that one night, Zion came upon a hybrid pack and SA a young girl. Then he brutally ☠️ her. Alpha dad helped him cover it up by going back and wiping out the whole pack. h’s dad and brother were killed. Mom was able to escape with h. Yes, mom and h are hybrids. Later, mom married the Alpha dad. She only did this to protect herself and h. I guess she figured what better way to hide from people wanting to kill hybrids than shacking up with the leader of the hybrid murdering crew. 🤷‍♀️ I don’t get why she was so mean to h throughout the years, tho. Anyway, she saw H’s eyes light up with his wolf the night of h’s 18th birthday, so mom knew they were fated mates. She wanted to get h away from him.

Mom and h are discovered and they are taken prisoner by alpha dad and Zion. Ryder (he’s a good Alpha that h became friends with) can only get one out in time, so h makes him take her mom. Alpha dad comes and beats the tar out of h. She is barely hanging on to life when H shows up yelling “SHE IS MY MATE” and alpha dad is like huh? H ☠️☠️☠️☠️ alpha dad. Zion shoots H, but it hits h. Zion disappears. h is in bad shape for a few days, but recovers. h’s mom leaves the pack and h makes the decision to stand by her man. He’s now alpha and is working to undo all his dad/brother’s bad deeds.

They have smex and H finally marks her. HEA, maybe. Zion is still around somewhere.

Angst, angst and more angst y’all. Spoilers below but if you like forbidden fated mates full of angst, this one is for you.

——-

———

So about halfway through I’m thinking this a solid 3⭐️ read. It started out pretty good. Violet was an extremely sympathetic character, you feel so incredibly bad for her situation. She can’t shift or feel her wolf. She’s an outcast because of it, her mother treats her like crap, her stepfather the alpha is sort of indifferent but not cruel, and her stepbrother Darius is the only person who ever treated her with care. But when he sees her for the first time once she’s back, he turns and leaves. Turns out they’re fated mates, he’s known since she was 18, he thinks it can’t work because their stepsiblings (and her wolf is weak and he’s the future alpha so his dad won’t allow the match). Violet overhears Darius saying some cruel things about her to his dad and she feels betrayed. Cue the next 45% of the book.

Violet has to work under Darius. They skirt each other every day. There’s tension. Darius blows so hot and cold you can’t keep up. Violet is pissed because of the sh*t talking. I’ll admit, the tension here was great and I was dying to see them get together. But it went on way too long. Darius started to annoy me, he was too back and forth, too tortured in his inner monologue, too repetitive. I started feeling like if she’s your fated mate then step up! That’s what makes fated mates great!! But he couldn’t commit or stay away. Violet started to annoy me with her pettiness and indifference to Darius. Yes her feelings are hurt but also, what he said wasn’t *that* bad and I think he’s tried to apologize by this point. So I was annoyed with them both. So much angst between these too. And so much “omg it’s my step sibling this is wrong! But also why does it feel right?” It got old.

The second half bumped this up to 4⭐️. The tension was good. The angst was still there. It climbed to a 10 with the third act “break up”, which I usually loathe but in this case made sense. I was right there with Violet in her anger at Darius. I was glad the author made her hold him accountable and say all the things the reader was thinking. It was heartbreaking but necessary.

The drama around the hybrids was interesting but honestly came out of nowhere. We don’t even see the word until more than halfway, and then all of sudden it’s the whole plot. I would have liked more integration of that throughout. But the whole last third was so fast paced I couldn’t put it down, so well done there.

What could have made it 5⭐️? Trimming the first half by about 70 pages of angst and emotional back and forth would help. Or replace those passages with things about hybrids, but more action from the characters and less stewing. Both MCs were likable but not lovable. Violet was too stubborn, with everything. Darius was too hot and cold, and too noble when it came to the pack. More time for Violet’s imprisonment. Let us be in it with her, let it settle how dire her situation is, how painful. For a book that drug out the thoughts and feelings in the first half, we sure rushed through all the action and drama in the last third.

Still, we get our HEA, and it was *hard earned*. I couldn’t put the book down after the 50% mark, and I was invested. So 4⭐️. Just know you’re getting ALL. THE. ANGST. When you open this one, so be prepared.

this was really good.

Hooked from beginning to end. I could even overlook some questions that I don’t recall being answered, like how did violet’s mom meet and get into a relationship with Darius’s dad? What happened during Violet’s time in Europe? Aren’t there packs who supported Darius’s dad and were anti hybrids too? WTH happened to Zion??? That man needs to be stopped in the most brutal way possible.

Anyway i could overlook those questions never being answered because of the satisfying way the story unraveled. The climax was chef’s kiss and people may not be a fan of it but I freaking loved how dramatically self sacrificing Violet was. She’s the perfect balance of strong and sweet. She didnt let herself get bulldozed (except maybe by her mom) and most importantly SHE REJECTED DARIUS and there was NO accidental pregnancy. Just absolutely amazing. This story ticked every box and scratched every itch character-wise that so many other stories of this genre failed to achieve.

I could have read two hundred more pages of this just to get some of my questions answered too. Just my luck to finally come across a shifter story that I liked and yet it’s shorter in length than the average subpar shifter stories out there. Definitely was left wanting more.

Great Forbidden Romance

I have really enjoyed this and couldn't put it down, a good start to a new series. Well-written story full of action, with fated mates, chemistry, love, romance, rejection, secrets, twists and great character development.

Violet feels unwanted by her mother, unacknowledged by the pack and doesn't feel at home with the pack. Her mother had remarried and her stepfather is the alpha who has called her back to the pack to work for him with his son Darius. But she suffers from an illness and has to take medication regularly, as well as not being able to shift, so is viewed as low in the pack.

Darius can feel the mate pull and knows she's his fated, but he also realises as step-siblings they can't do anything and tries to put a block between them, emotionally, though he's still kind to her when he can. He wars with himself over duty to the pack and his growing bond with Violet.

Violet has felt unloved, unwanted and unseen by her pack as she is too weak to even feel her wolf. Her stepfather is the alpha who has recalled her back to the pack after six years away at school. He insists that she works for him with her stepbrother Darius. Her mother shows her hatred of her daughter with violence and indifference.
Darius knows she is his fated mate, but as his sibling, she is taboo. He is vicious in his condemnation of her being worthy of working for him and she overhears him. She instantly shuts her feelings off and treats him with indifference.
I was drawn into this book as the story unfolded: the drama drew me in and kept me engrossed from start to finish. As secrets are uncovered and people you thought you knew everything about proved wrong, the book comes to an unexpected turn of events. A wonderful read.

Darius, the Alpha heir, and Violet, are fated mates; however, she is unaware of this. Darius is trying to balance his feelings for her because it can perceived as inappropriate as they are stepsiblings by marriage; he has to keep his pack obligations and responsibilities in mind as well as political alliances with other packs and cannot come across as weak. Unfortunately, for both of them, the dangerous situation escalates before he can come to a planned solution and both Violet and her mother suffer for the procrastination. In the end, Darius fights for her and Violet fights for him.

This story is for you if you like the following:
🗡️Family betrayal
🤫Secret identity
😈Perceived enemies that are really alliances 🙂
💕Proclaimed love.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The characters were pretty well written and developed, although a few of the side characters were little more than cliches. To an extent, so were the FMC and MMC, but they at least got enough page time to develop personalities

As with a lot of books in this genre, most of the conflict could have been resolved (or avoided completely) if any of the characters would have just sat down and had a conversation like adults. Except Ethan. Ethan was great, and more people should have listened to him

I hope there end up being more books in this series because I felt like there were a lot of unresolved/hinted at storylines that definitely need following up on.

The title basically tells the main plot points. Violet returns from University in Europe as ordered by her emotionally abusive mother. Violet's wolf has been repressed since her father, brother and entire pack were massacred eleven years before. Her mother married the alpha of another pack and Violet was belittled by the members. She adored her handsome new step brother and now they are reunited. He is in love with her, fated mate, but won't act due their "sibling" status. There's lots of politics, confusion and a mystery. Hybrids become an issue, but it's never clear what the hybrids are? They seem to be wolf shifters and something else, but what?

Violet is special and even she doesn't know how very special she is. Darius is her stepbrother and her fated mate, even though she doesn't know this at first. Darius knows and does all he can to fight it at first. There is danger in the pack against her and it comes to a head soon after she leaves Darius. She feels that no one will ever choose her because they never did. She is in for a big surprise. I highly recommend this book to all paranormal romance readers.

unique

I liked that this story did not have inconsistencies that is common in other shifter romance stories. It is well-balanced and well-written. No sub plots to distract us from the live story. No inflated villainous acts that are ridiculous. Just undiluted love story with a side of family dynamics.
The hero truly loved the heroine but his weakness was lack of decisiveness. The heroine is strong and innocent and loving. It was her who rejected the hero because she had to stand up for herself. But the hero in the end redeemed himself.

Trigger Warning *** Violence and Abuse***
I enjoyed reading "The Alpha's Forbidden Hybrid Mate", by Jaymin Snow. This paranormal story was full of intrigue, family drama, deception, treachery and of course romance. Darius and Violet did not have an easy courtship, but they have a happily ever after, (for now). I can't wait to read book two.

More Than Stepsiblings

Darius and his stepsister Violet are fated mates but their relationship as stepsiblings, her mom’s treatment of her and some mysterious medication are an obstacle to their future together. It was an interesting story with an emotionally charged plot. I could not get enough of this book.
