Rate this book
A masterwork destroyed. A conspiracy implanted. A continent at risk.

When a revered art expert suffers a catastrophic and very public breakdown during a prestigious authentication, Doctor Genevieve Lenard sees what no one else can — that what happened to this man was not a breakdown at all.

Drawn into the glittering and secretive world of European cultural heritage, Genevieve and her team uncover a web of deception that reaches into the highest levels of EU institutions. Someone has been quietly, methodically, building toward an endgame years in the making and the celebrated international exhibition currently drawing the art world's attention is only the surface of it.

With lives hanging in the balance and the clock running out, Genevieve must confront a threat unlike anything the team has faced before. One where the weapon is invisible, the victims don't know they are victims, and the person at the centre has convinced himself he is the hero.

Curiouser and Curiouser

"This was a most intriguing case. We had a dead art restorer with a possible brain- computer interface implanted in his brain tissue. We had a psychological breakdown that did not follow any recognisable escalation pattern. And we had a meditation retreat that might never have been a meditation retreat at all."

And that is not a spoiler - it is a Dr. Lenard review of this case.

In this, the 30th book in the series, Genevieve and her team are dealing with a completely different and up to date situation that reads more like a B level sci-fi movie. Slightly centered around Vernet's art but more around science the team is in Brussels investigating an art restorer's death and it's ultimate hazards.

As usual, give me an Estelle Ryan book and leave me alone because I get lost in her writing. Again, if you have never read the series I suggest you find the first book to lay the foundation for the other fascinating mysteries that will draw you in the way they do me. Highly Recommended 5/5

story heft lacking

I love this series and anxiously awaiting each new book. This one was a bit disappointing. Too much time was spent on intricate details of interior places where they stayed and on how much the Belgian people loved the team. It was fluff. It was if the story line didn't have enough depth. I still love the series but this one was disappointing.

More hi-tech than art, but I still enjoyed it.

This is a series I always pre-order. They are short (this one was 208 pages) but I enjoy the characters, and the various European settings. This one was exciting with a new way to create chaos emerging. I'm hoping it's not a reality yet!

Another Great Adventure

Genevieve and the team are investigating the role of brain computer interface when some art experts destroy art before suddenly dying. Once again, I learn while I read. Very enjoyable series.

Characters and story line flow

I read this book in one night. Estelle Ryan always has a surprise antagonist. Her research is well done introducing, in this case, a new medical device. As usual characters flow together well.

Disappointing

These are becoming more formula writing book after book. Where is the magic? Will be looking for new authors as I proceed to summer reading.

Exciting, vivid, hopeful. I love how the team works so well together and with others. The story includes AI which is scary all by itself. The characters are so amazing. Love the whole series.

A solid 4.5-star continuation of a great series that still delivers on character and stakes, even if I missed some of the earlier books’ deep-dive investigative texture (or as Francine would say… deep-deep dive).

I really enjoyed being back in Genevieve’s world with Francine and the rest of the team, and this book kept me turning pages. The emotional beats and team dynamics are still strong, and I loved seeing how their relationships and shared history continue to evolve.

That said, I did miss the kind of granular, step-by-step investigative detail we got in roughly the first fifteen books. I’ve always loved watching Genevieve, Francine, and the others work through the puzzle piece by piece, and here some of that process is summarized instead of fully shown. It’s still an engaging read, but I would have liked just a bit more time in their heads as they connect the dots.
Overall, this is an easy 4.5 stars from me and a definite recommend.

If you’ve been with Genevieve and her team from the beginning, you’ll enjoy where they are now, even if you might also wish for a touch more of that earlier, ultra-detailed investigative feel.
