Rate this book
Jude Smith has been a coward his whole life until he meets Jonnie Robbins and their friendship transforms him into a hero.
Twelve-year-old Jude lives in Smallington under constant fear of Harold Saglierdi, the school bully, but all of this is about to change when Jonnie moves to town. Harold threatens to beat up anyone caught hanging out with Jonnie. The threat works, but not for long. As Harold's father attempts to renew his third and last term as mayor, Fatty Hutchinson's father runs against him. When poll results favor Fatty’s father for the win, Harold’s popularity at school diminishes. As a result, Jude and a few other boys, including Fatty, befriend Jonnie, causing Harold’s gang to declare war against them. When Fatty’s father catches Mayor Saglierdi stuffing the ballot box, the tension between the boys ruptures into a series of violent episodes that quickly escalate, eventually leading Jude to face the greatest dilemma of his life – either let Jonnie take the fall for something Harold did, or defend Jonnie and face a false arrest arranged for by the mayor.
