Christmas on the Range: Winter Roses\Cattleman's Choice

Rate this book
It's the most wonderful time of the year…for rugged ranchers to fall in love! Diana Palmer spins two fan-favorite tales of love, joy and happily-ever-after under the mistletoe.

Winter Roses
—Handsome rancher Stuart York was never one to mince words. Ivy Conley, his younger sister's best friend, found that out the hard way. During a night's stay at his Jacobsville ranch, Ivy wound up in Stuart's arms. Knowing she was too young for him, Stuart closed his heart to her. Now, years later, Ivy is determined to be treated like a grown woman. But can she tame the one man determined to avoid her embrace?

Cattleman's Choice —Carson Wayne has come to Mandelyn Bush with the ultimate request: he needs her to teach him how to treat a lady. There's no doubt he asked the right person. Beautiful Mandelyn is as polished and feminine as Carson is rough and reclusive.

It's too intriguing a challenge for Mandelyn to turn down. She's always been curious about what lies beneath the outlaw's hard shell. But what she didn't count on were her own feelings for the irresistible rebel.

In 1995, she graduated summa cum laude from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA, with a major in history and a double minor in archaeology and Spanish. She was named to two honor societies (the Torch Club and Alpha Chi), and was named to the National Dean's List. In addition to her writing projects, she is currently working on her master's degree in history at California State University. She hopes to specialize in Native American studies. She is a member of the Native American Rights Fund, the American Museum of Natural History, the National Cattlemen's Association, the Archaeological Institute of Amenca, the Planetary Society, The Georgia Conservancy, the Georgia Sheriff's Association, and numerous conservation and charitable organizations. This book was terrible. It only got the second star because I managed to finish it. Literally the opposite of Woman’s Lib. Maybe it’s because it was written in a past era but jeepers. In the second story, the woman literally trapped the man at the end. Seduced him when he was wasted and said she would have his baby and then he’d be hers forever 😳. He was literally a Neanderthal among city folk, and she winds up apologizing and blaming herself every time it happens. Uhhh? I get you shouldn’t want to change your partner and take them as they are... but honestly. Being a decent human being in public isn’t asking too much and sure as heck doesn’t deserve an apology.

Unrealistic, over-complicated, shallow characters. This one wasn't for me. And as much as I like Will Damron, I don't think this was a good book for him to narrate. His talents seemed wasted.

But that's just me. Your mileage may vary.

First book Winter Roses was real good. Cattlemen Choice was good, but needed more content. Still a good read.

Christmas On The Range consist of two Diana Palmer stories. Winter Roses which is part of her Long, Tall Texans series and Cattleman's Choice. While Winter Roses is number 32 in the series I was able to follow the story quite well and didn't feel like I was confused about characters or what was going on. I'm hoping that what other books I end up reading in this series are the same way. I'm not wanting to read the whole thing just ones that sound good to me.

Winter Roses was very good and had me drawn in from the beginning. Some of the characters were enjoyable while others such as Rachel and the father weren't. I found Stuart domineering which is pointed out in this story. This was my first story I've read by Diana Palmer. As mentioned above I will be checking out others in this series.

Cattleman's Ranch is a stand alone story. I've actually had this on my to reads shelf for a little while now. Whit this story I noticed and was pointed out that Carson is domineering just like Stuart. This makes me wonder if she writes most if not all of her main male characters that way. I enjoyed Madelyn and Carson's story more because it was entertaining reading about the lessons.

Both stories were good and if you are looking for some good western romance i recommend them.

I'm sure I have read both stories contained in this collection at some point, as I was able to predict what was coming next a couple of times. I read a lot of Diana Palmer when I was younger and maybe that's why I didn't notice as much the age discrepancy between the characters. I would love to see older women as possible partners in the stories and not just 21 year olds. And not all virgins either. Aside from that, the lead characters were interesting and I enjoyed the drug trade story that involved various characters in the "Winter Roses" story. I think I recognized many of the character names from previous stories. The one technique that Diana Palmer excels at is keeping her readers up to date on past characters, which often times you end up wondering about once a book ends.

I don’t really know what I just read! The first half, first book - loved it! Entertaining characters and great story line. The second book/half it was like being on a rollercoaster and it felt awfully rushed! I didn’t really like the two main characters and the story line was everywhere! I feel unmotivated to read my next book because of the second book but hopefully it’ll put me back in the small town stories I know and love! ❤️

Maybe it’s written a long time ago and it didn’t age well but the women in this book at the other are pathetic and useless but pure souls that just kind of let everyone beat up on them. Tippy and Grier are mentioned in this one, I can’t stand tippy, bully mean girl, gross. Cash is way too good for her. But she’s also useless.

Audio Book: I think I would’ve liked this better had I read a physical copy of the book as opposed to the audio book. The narrator was a bit cringey...

Not the best writing, but understand from reading other reviews that these were early works, and every writer has a learning curve. They weren't bad, just not great either. I dropped from 3 stars to 2 because I was looking for some light Christmas time stories with a happy ending, and despite the title, there's no Christmas anything in either of these stories.

Christmas on the Range: An Anthology (Long Tall Texans). By Diana Palmer, Narrator: Will Damron. 2015. Harlequin Audio. ISBN: 1504652053 (Unabridged audiobook, 9 hours, 42 mins).

“Winter Roses”

Rancher Stuart York’s aversion and sharp tongue has cut Ivy Conley down numerous times in the past. The way he figured, it was for the best; she was just a teenager with a silly crush on him. But now she is 21, finished with school and set up with her business and Stuart finds he no longer wants to push his feelings for his younger sister’s best friend away.

Ivy’s a tough cookie. She’s had to soldier through a lot of turmoil in her home life, but has never let that alter her caring and selfless nature. Stuart takes his sweet time coming around, but once he steps in to be there for Ivy when she is once again confronted with family tragedy, the caring, protective man behind the tough veneer is revealed.

“Cattleman’s Choice”

Rough and reclusive rancher, Carson Wayne, has asked Mandelyn Bush to help him refine his coarse ways. He wants to settle down and be able to court a woman properly; and Mandelyn, he believes, is the right woman for the job. Mandelyn has always been intrigued by prickly Carson and dives right into the assignment. Little does she know that Carson already has his sights set on a classy lady.

Palmer delivers two entertaining stories while Will Damron proves a deft hand at surly Texan cowboys.

I love Diana Palmer books!!! I knew that they were reissued books, but these are two that I had not read before. I found it interesting to read back to books that were published years ago, and compare the writing of today. For me, there is no time frame on these wonderfully rich stories of western romance. They might be a bit tamer, but they give you a warm feeling of romance, cowboys, and the women who tame them. A winner at 4.5 stars!!!

I've read several of Ms Palmer's books and they are good... in many cases.
They are easy, simple, and many times too fluffy for words.
This one, a two story in one, has little to recommend it.
The first story was not too bad, but the second was a bit much to swallow and believe.
